Don't rent Colonel Bob's cottage - too long a list of things that were wrong to list - don't let the price be the thing to pull you in.

They would not come take care of anything. This year I tried Rentals on the Ocean and couldn't believe how wonderful they were. They call it the surfers shack because of the decor which is adorable. It has easy access to the beach, a small fenced in yard for a small pet. We bought the starter amenity pack which we originally thought was pricey, but we're very grateful for when we got there. We arrived in the pouring rain very late at night, so the starter pack kept us from having to unload everything when we got there. The screened in porch is just right to just sit and gab during the evening. The outdoor shower helped keep the inside from becoming too sandy. If I ever go that way again, I would want to stay again. The only thing I would mention is that the address on the cottage will not show up on the GPS. It needs to read S. Old Oregon trail and it will lead you right to it. Close to shopping and activities.

We arrived in Manteo to…read morebeautiful weather and upon check- in we were asked to hold in the office while an inspector confirmed our unit was clean and ready. Once we got to our 3rd floor room we found the sand that we expected to find at the beach, all over the floor (keep in mind this is not an ocean front facility). Our crawling 15 month old was on the floor less than 5 minutes and his hands and knees were covered in sand and dirt. This prompted us to sweep, which made it apparent the floors had not been cleaned even on a low standard. There were various crumbs on the tables and counters, indicating that they had not been thoroughly cleaned. At this point we contacted the front office to request a vacuum and mop, and they got us in contact with Ken Herman the Rental Coordinator. He promptly delivered the requested items as well as a bag of cleaning products that we were grateful to have. We spent several hours on our first day of vacation cleaning to mitigate the problem. They did offer to send cleaning staff out, however we feel that they failed the first time even with an inspector's approval, and felt more comfortable cleaning the unit ourselves. Less important than the filthy floors, but worthy of noting- there were ants on the counter, dishes were dirty, the rooms would not cool, the ceiling fan in the master was unusable due to an awful squeak, and there were countless other cleanliness issues. This made for a very uncomfortable stay of which we decided to check out of 4 days early. My family and I do not expect the newest and nicest of things, however we do expect a clean and sanitary environment. Furthermore this building is one of the older buildings in the complex, which is not equipped with fire sprinklers. Typically this is not a bother, however it concerns me when you have a multi story residential building that allows vehicles to park under the rooms, and only has one means of egress. The unit is only equipped with one smoke/ carbon monoxide detector which is on the ceiling just inside the front door. (NFPA 72 for many years states detectors should be placed in every sleep room as well as outside each sleep room.) With fire places in the units, the need for adequate smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are paramount especially when combined with the single means of egress, parking under the building and lack of sprinkler system. With Carbon monoxide being heavier than air, the entire room would have to fill with carbon monoxide to properly activate the detector which could be fatal if occupants are sleeping. (That is if the alarm is even heard in the master when the door is closed with tv or the squeaky ceiling fan on). This is just a side note that should be addressed by the property management to ensure the safety of their guests in the event of an emergency during their stay. Overall it seems they were more concerned about the fishing tournament that was taking place over the satisfaction of their guests. We had hoped to make the OBX and Pirate's Cove an annual vacation spot, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

We normally stay in the Colington area, but decided to upgrade to the beach side. Obviously, this was a mistake. The house appears to be quite old and well used, but the owners certainly have not kept it up and in good shape. The cleanliness was "Eh" at best (but again, Seaside gave us a refund and apology that the house was not clean). The biggest issue we ran into was that on Thu (we rented Sat to Sat) was that the roof started to leak onto the 2nd floor. My grandson slipped on the water. Thank goodness, he was ok, otherwise the owners and I would be having a MUCH different conversation. On Friday, water was coming into the window frame in my stepson's room. We reported both instances immediately, but got no response from Seaside (I even called the after hours emergency number, and was promised 3 times that someone would call me back. Crickets). The kitchen was VERY outdated, they had an electric stove that is disparately in need of replacement. The pots and pans were all out of order and old. Obviously, the owners do not care one bit about this house and the people who stay there. There is a porch that overlooks Virginia Dare and you can see the ocean from there, but the traffic is so heavy, it's quite difficult to hold a decent conversation. In addition, the wood is old and we made the grandkids wear shoes, because we were afraid they would get splinters. All of these events did put a damper and reduced our enjoy ability of our vacation. I'm very shocked that the owners are so callus in the upkeep of the house, and we certainly will not stay there again.

Exceptional Hospitality & Beautiful Resort!…read more Shutters is a beautiful, clean property with everything you could want for an Outer Banks getaway! The oceanfront location and easy beach access are fantastic, and the outdoor pool area is amazing with plenty of comfortable seating. They also have an indoor pool, hot tub, and a great hot breakfast. But the true standout of our experience was Kira, one of the supervisors. Her kindness and hospitality were absolutely unmatched. She went above and beyond to make my son and me feel welcomed and cared for, and her genuine warmth made our experience so much more special. Kira is truly an asset to Shutters! Samantha at the front desk was also incredibly kind and helpful. We were so impressed by the beautiful property and, most of all, the people who made us feel so welcome. We will definitely be back and highly recommend Shutters to anyone visiting the Outer Banks!

We had a ground floor room with two queen beds. There was a "back" door leading to a small sitting area looking at the dunes. We could hear the water from there. We did go up the stairs to see the water view, but it was way too cold to sit outside. There is also an indoor pool and jacuzzi. We didn't use it but it was good to know it was there. My only complaint was the shower. It was very difficult to route the water from the faucet up to the showerhead and the water was only lukewarm. If we had stayed longer, we would have asked for a different room because of that. We could tell the hotel has been updated within the last few years. It wasn't faded decor, but had a clean, classy vibe. Not a high-end resort hotel, but certainly worth the price and it's conveniently located.

Filthy, Unsafe, and Insulting Response - Do NOT Stay Here!…read more I have stayed in many places over the years, and this was by far the most disgusting and poorly managed property I've ever experienced. This place should not be advertised at the rate I paid -- it felt like a $50-a-night roadside dump, not a $200+ vacation rental. Here's what I encountered: * Black mold in the bathroom and even on the doors, a clear health hazard. * Thick layers of dust coating the ceiling fans, window ledges, and even the walls -- clearly no one has cleaned this property in ages. * Lamps literally falling apart. * The entire room smelled musty and damp, making it feel unclean and unsafe. * Trash scattered throughout the backyard, including a dirty diaper just left behind. * To make matters worse, there was an animal scratching inside the walls at night, making it impossible to sleep. When I reported these issues to KEES Vacations management, they only offered a pathetic $30 "goodwill" refund, which is beyond insulting given the condition of this property and the amount I paid. It's clear they have zero concern for guest safety, cleanliness, or satisfaction. This property is completely unkempt and neglected. I will never stay at a KEES property again, and I strongly urge others to stay far away. There are plenty of clean, well-managed places to stay -- don't risk your vacation, your health, or your sanity here. Bottom line: * This place is a health hazard. * KEES management is dismissive. * Absolutely not worth the money. Do yourself a favor: DO NOT STAY HERE.

if I could give this place negative stars I would. It's self check in like an Airbnb, which I…read morethought was cool... until we needed literally anything at all... The room had a musty smell that *immediately* began to bother my allergies, its by the beach so I figured it was just hard to keep completely dry. You get limited resources, 3 small, sad pillows, no extra blankets, 1 towel per guest, and no place to get water (except the shower or bathroom sink and just... no.) or ice even in the entry area and hall. The bathroom door didn't latch, much less lock and even if you held it closed there was a 2in peep hole where the latch *used* to be and the wood is worn down. We're married, c'est la vie. The toilet did *not* want to flush but if you held it a while it finally would. There was no hook for the hand towel they provided so we draped it across the back of the sink- not ideal. Still, the room seemed nice enough at first.. until we tried to shower. It had a jacuzzi tub that we were excited to try and now will fuel my germaphobia and nightmares for years to come. The shower walls had someone else's hair on them, an indication that they had not been cleaned. We were sore from the drive and the tub looked clean enough, even though the walls were gross, we planned to shower after anyway. To start, it was broken, if you pressed the button the bubbles would start but as soon as you took your finger off the button, it stopped. We rigged it with our keys to get it going. When the vents started, the water began to make *actual* bubbles... we had not used soap yet. Then, to our everlasting horror, when the bubbles burst against the tub wall, a greenish brown scum spread across them. I about vomited so we quickly tried to drain the tub (we had to pry the plug out because it didn't have a handle or anything). The dispensers for both the soap and shampoo were empty. They didn't even spurt a tiny bit out so they have probably been empty for quite some time. We had checked this ahead of time, thankfully, and borrowed some from travel companions in another room (they, too, were almost out. So, we had a coffee cup with *maybe* two quarter sized squirts of soap- once I added hand soap to the mix?). We always bring soap but it was only one night and hotels always provide it, right? Once we had scrubbed the top layers of our skin off, we climbed into a creaky and *very* uncomfortable bed. The shade on the window beside the bed would not go down further than halfway and the curtains were this so they did not block the lights from the street. The AC is above the closet so there is no way to cover the light it produces which was an impressive amount (at this point, just about anything would have annoyed me, so...), this meant that there were bright lights on either side of us. The toilet periodically made loud running water noises even though no one was using it. This, too, made sleep difficult. Hands down, the *worst* hotel experience of my entire life. I created a yelp account for the sole purpose of warning all potential guests away. TLDR: Please, SPARE YOURSELF. Rent some place else.
