Of course this was done way before the world was turned upside down! Anyway, we honored our reservation, and checked in for a 3 night stay. IGH is located in Manteo on the main drag adjacent to the public library. We were promptly checked in and given a brief tour by the innkeeper. Our expectations: 1) Small but cozy room-check. (2 double beds, small BR, microwave, small closet, tv, mini fridge. 2) Clean room- Mostly a check. (We did spy an unsightly bug 2x but other than that hiccup the cleanliness was adequate) 3) Cool room-Check. (We brought a fan to assist the window unit and our room was comfortable) We mainly used the IGH as a homebase to rest our heads at night and decompress. It is perfect for relaxing. It has an understated charm with its beachy colors and outdoor tiki bar/smoking area. We learned the owners are brand new, Clint and Christy, and they are committed to their new beach B&B or C&C. We met Christy and she was beyond friendly and very welcoming. She insisted we walk to Manteo's waterfront (6 blocks). We were glad we took her advice, cool shops and restaurant options. Only real drawback is parking is really tight. Oh yeah and 2 interesting tidbits-1) Andy Griffith was rumored to routinely stay here. 2) Keep an eye out for Vinnie the 21 yr old property feline and mascot. Enjoyed our stay, and we will probably return when the world calms down.

The original owner was very kind to people who needed a place to stay, so he would sometimes give tenants work. A way of singing for your supper. The art in the lobby was done by one of the tenants in lue of paying for his rent. When the business was sold, the new owners thought it to be a good idea to hold onto it for its historical value of this awesome hotel.

We took their suggestion to have dinner at Salt and Cyprus with waterfront views and great cocktails. In the morning, the inn's breakfast was perfect. Fresh fruit, homemade muffin, coffee, juice, biscuits and gravy, and scrambled eggs. With our short stay, we ran out of time to try out their fire pits and take a bike ride through town. Next time we'll have to stay at least two nights!

The house boasted a pool, hot tub, roof top patio and various other outdoor seating areas. It was located on the second row of houses from the beach with about a 3 minute walk to the beach and 5 minutes to the pier. Every morning at 9am hot coffee was available and our hosts served us breakfast that included omelets and a breakfast casserole with veggies from the Margie's own garden. There are only 3 rooms at this B&B so only 6 people maximum can stay at one time. Fortunately, we were the only ones there during this weekend so we had the whole place pretty much to ourselves! If you are looking to get away and have a quite time with a hot breakfast served daily, you should check out this place!

Once we checked-in, Saturday, June 29 we were informed by the Waves Office of Resort Realty that…read morethe Vacation Home (Dolphin Watch - #7534 - Avon, NC) was unlocked due to the cleaning staff being unable to lock the front door. When we arrived at the house, no one in our party could figure out how to lock the front door; the deadbolt simply would not engage. We promptly called the office on Monday, July 1 and spoke with Jeanine to have maintenance come and check the door. That was not the only issue, as the Pool Lights (the underwater light as well as deck lights) were not working at this time. Jeanine advised that she would put a ticket in for maintenance to look at the front door and the pool company to check the pool lights. Tuesday, July 2 no one had come to address either issue. I called back again, and referenced the time, date, and who I spoke with, however NEITHER ticket was placed. I spoke with Angel and she put the ticket in ... again. Luckily, maintenance did show up later that day as I told Angel it was 3 days now that the house could not be locked. When the maintenance man showed up, he was very helpful and demonstrated how to use the door lock, where you have to lift up the handle to engage the 1st part, then turn the deadbolt. Who would know that? That should that be in the instructions for the house. Obviously, if the cleaning staff cannot lock the door, how would a family from out-of-town know? The pool maintenance showed up at some point on Wednesday, July 3 (4 days into our trip). He was also very friendly. The underwater light in the pool was out, so it needed replaced because it shorted the circuit (there was a taped switch by the pool lights, apparently so not to short the circuit). Basically, the underwater light was not replaced and that switch was taped as a quick-fix. Everything to this point should have been addressed prior to checking in for our week at this $5,600.00 rental home. A list of other smaller issues including, but not limited to: - The main sink faucet in the Kitchen was leaking (maintenance completely replaced the faucet, Friday July 5) - The small island sink in the Kitchen drained slowly (maintenance did not fix) - Filter in the hot tub was changed (maintenance completed with us, Wednesday July 3) - A credit card fee to place the reservation online ($45.00 I believe) - Other realty companies do not charge this. The house needed a more deep-cleaning. From the A/C filters being filthy, to black mold in the shower in the Master Bedroom on the 3rd floor (my partner and I scrubbed out with some leftover bleach; we didn't bother to ask maintenance do deal with it). The last issue arose when the A/C stopped working on the 2nd floor (all family bedrooms) on Thursday, July 4. We only noticed it after maintenance had come on Wednesday and changed our filters (they were dark grey with dust). We called maintenance, left a message on July 4 evening, then again on Friday, July 5 as an after-hours maintenance request. We still did not have A/C on the 2nd floor when we locked the house and left on Saturday Morning. This is a great shame; we have rented through several realty companies through our lives and Sun Realty may be the best, Resort Realty has been the worst. Maybe someone should do an undercover rental through Sun and see all that they are doing right. People come to OBX, oftentimes (such as our situation) splitting the cost of a beachfront home so that everyone can enjoy something special, luxurious, and relaxing. This trip was a constant battle of issues with the home and maintenance that should have be completed prior to a guest's check-in. There are too many realty companies to choose from in OBX and I would highly suggest reconsidering the rental if it happens to be through Resort Realty.

First, the online payment system for Resort Realty just sucks. I have friends from all over flying in and we all pay our portion separately. Most companies now have a robust system that can handle this including a visual report of the name of the person, the date they paid, and how much. All I could see as the organizer was the balance due; even when i asked them for a report, they couldn't match a name to a payment. Additionally, any guest logging in to make a payment had a drop down list of everyone else's payment method, so we had one person pay for their room using someone else's checking account! On top of that, it charged a $49 service fee to use a credit card as a payment method. It was a brand new property, we were only the 3rd or 4th group to rent it. This was a brand new house, so we understood there would be some issues. There was still a rough-in for the master bath tub, some wires hadn't been connected; we took that in stride. However, we paid for pool heat as part of our contract. It rained Sunday and Monday and the water was cold; we chalked that up to the rain because we didn't know any better. One of the two gas grills' propane tanks was empty. Tuesday morning, however, the pool heat system read "72 degrees" and we called to have it turned on. A tech came and the water started getting warmer. After our stay, we asked for a prorated refund for the days the pool heat was off. It should be the responsibility of the rental company to make sure that the pool heat is on and that propane tanks have fuel at turnover, not the responsibility of the guest to call. In an email response, they maintained that the pool heat was on. they made no mention of the propane or their lack of turnover procedures. You may laugh, but we had AI do an analysis of the pool heat, factoring in the heat-pump style heater, the weather, and the time frame, and it stated emphatically that the pool heat could not have been on prior to Tuesday morning. AI also suggested that we ask for the work order from the tech showing their finding and actions taken. It has now been 17 days since we wrote and have gotten no reply or explanation or work order. This is terrible customer service. Even if you're 100% wrong, if you communicate with them and they just don't respond - reprehensible. Here is the AI's analysis: No, it is highly unlikely for a standard, properly functioning heated pool to drop all the way down to 72 °F under those specific weather conditions. If the pool was actively being heated, hitting 72 °F indicates either a system failure, a completely overwhelmed heat source, or that the heater had been turned off days prior. Here is why a functional heater should have kept the temperature much higher: Heaters Fight Evaporation: While the 59 °F night air and cold rain accelerate evaporation and thermal loss, a pool heater is designed to replace those lost BTUs. A typical heat pump or gas heater is set to maintain a baseline (usually between 78 °F and 82 °F) and will kick on automatically as the water temperature begins to dip. The Weather Wasn't Extreme Enough: A drop to 59 °F is a standard cool autumn night, not a freezing winter blizzard. While rain does introduce a cooling effect, it rarely possesses enough thermal mass to overpower a working heater to that degree unless thousands of gallons of freezing water flooded the pool instantly. The "Heat Pump" Exception: If the pool uses an electric air-source heat pump, these systems lose efficiency when the air drops below 50-55 °F. However, Monday night's low stayed around 59 °F, meaning even a heat pump should have remained operational enough to prevent a plummet to 72 °F. The Bottom Line: If the pool was at 72 °F on Tuesday morning, it was almost certainly operating as an unheated pool at that time.

I love the building with its weathered shaker shingles, bright green door, and welcoming walkway lined with flowerpots. It looked like something out of a movie, beautiful! Inside, the lobby was dim, full of antiques, dark wood, vintage Tiffany lamps, Oriental rugs, faded chintz, a cuckoo clock and abundant in English charm. The owner of the inn was "off duty" but she left our keys and towels on the huge heirloom desk in the parlor. Talk about trusting your visitors... this was a sweet surprise. Our room was just as charming as the lobby, appointed with aged floral wallpaper, red and white checkered calico quilts on the beds, vintage furnishings and pictures of a bygone era. It was certainly cozy and warm. What could've improved was the twin bed I slept in... it wasn't very comfortable as it was saggy... new mattress please, smiley face! My friend's queen bed was comfy though, she said. Another thing I would have appreciated is a set of soft, matching towels. Although the bathroom was clean, the towels were rough, mix matched, and worn. This is an easy fix to take this inn up a notch! We only stayed one night, and when we checked out, again the phantom innkeeper was nowhere to be seen. While I appreciate the trustworthiness of the owner allowing its guests to check themselves in and out, we did encounter a couple of issues that would have warranted face-to-face contact. Next door lives a relative of the owner, I believe, and they have the yappiest little dog I've ever heard. No need for a wake up call here, lol! With a couple of improvements and a bit of sprucing, I think this idyllic country inn could easily be 5 stars! Maybe upon my next visit, I can meet the owner and they can earn that elusive 5th star *!!

I expressed my appreciation and quickly looked up the number to see if I could book my reservations.(it was Wednesday and we were leaving the next day) I was so elated that the lady on the phone was happy to accommodate us for just one night . I've been here with a party of 12 before, and we definitely waited a while, but I was impressed that they were able to accommodate a group that size. This time, I was with a party of two and we were seated pretty quickly. My one complaint about the wait system is that they announce when your table is ready, but if you're out of earshot, you'll miss it. It would be nice if they used a text, call, or buzzer system so you could walk down to the beach while you wait. Part of the pier seating is covered, but the farther you go out, the more exposed you are. We were seated near the end, so it was hot in the direct sun and very windy. But that comes with the territory, and the views make it worth it. There are also plenty of birds hoping you'll share your fries with them, which is both expected and pretty funny. We each ordered a Pain Killer. It was good at first, but it quickly became watered down, and I didn't think it was worth $10. We also got the nachos, but the price adds up quickly once you start adding toppings. Most of the menu is very à la carte. The prices seem reasonable at first, but sides and toppings can add up fast. The burgers don't come with fries, for example. We both got the West Coast Burger. It was good, but nothing particularly memorable. Service was attentive and generally friendly. Overall, Fish Heads is one of the better dining options in the area. The pier setting and views really make the experience unique. I enjoy coming here and will likely be back.
