I like this place. Its right in the middle of Gastown. I just took the bus cuz I didn't want to deal with the hassle of finding parking. The place is bright and plenty of seats. If ur reading or studying or working, theres plenty of more seats at the back where its quiet. I ordered an Iced Espresso and Apple fritter. There's plenty of options from pastries and wraps. It was good and relatively fresh. Staff are nice and place is clean. Ambient music is just about right and not blasting. Comfortable enough to have a conversation or if you needed to concentrate its not distracting. I like the location. I walked around the area afterwards. Plenty of shops to visit and other restaurants to match your appetite. I will definitely be back and hanging around this place! read more

Coffee shop in Gastown inside the Gaoler's Mews complex. Most unoriginal name for the place. Parking here is awful. Best of luck. For some reason the place feels more like a student lounge than a coffee shop. Must be the cafeteria style furniture and bare concrete, which gives it a dated feel. It almost felt that half the customers were actually working on group projects. Staff are friendly. Coffee here is decent but rather pricey. Approaching beer pricing. I went here with my friends as we thought it would be a nice place to escape from the rain and chat and it was alright. We got a cafe latte, cappuccino, and a matcha latte and sat at a small table in the cafe. The place was overall pretty quiet and there were a couple people doing work, so I would recommend this place more for doing work and studying rather than catching up with friends. The drinks were alright overall. The cafe latte and cappuccino were both okay and weren't great but definitely overpriced in my opinion. And, the matcha latte was just bad. It tasted as if they forgot to dissolve the matcha powder and just put it on top because once i drank the top layer, it was just straight milk. In the end, I couldn't even get through half way. Definitely would not be coming back again for the drinks, when I could go to a much better coffee shop for cheaper and better drinks. read more

I stopped by last week during a visit to Gastown with my family. They had a selection of pastries and sandwiches in a small glass case and a variety of coffee drinks to choose from. I selected a chocolate cheesecake and an iced Spanish latte. The cheesecake was okay, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about the latte. It was made with condensed milk, which I had never had in coffee before. It really knocked my socks off and I now am going to attempt to make it at home. My one complaint is the service. The girl who took our order wasn't friendly at all. I understand it is a busy location, but it doesn't hurt to at least fake a smile every once in a while. read more

I work nearby and it's actually the closest coffee shop to me, but I really try to avoid going here. The drinks are overpriced for the quality (and a lot of them aren't bad--just mediocre and expensive.) The worst thing though is the service and their total disregard for COVID safety precautions. I don't expect stellar service since honestly I work in retail myself and can understand that working in a coffee shop is way more stressful and fast-paced. But the baristas there seem to want you to know that they want you to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible. Probably the worst service I've ever gotten in a cafe before lol, and my standards for service are super low. About half of the baristas there also don't mask up. The ones that don't mask up just wear those ridiculous plastic face shields with nothing underneath. Not only does it do precisely jack but sometimes they talk to each other while making your drink and because the plastic shield only covers the space directly in front of their faces, anything that comes out of their mouths go down--into your drink. There's also a real lack of social distancing behind the counter and in the guest seating area, so I don't at all recommend studying or meeting here. It's the only place around here where yuppies can really sit for a while to study though so it's usually actually bustling in here. The bathrooms also consistently disgusting due to a lack of regular maintenance. There are literally so many other better coffee shops in the area. Go to Prado down the street or Birds and the Beets. Hell, go to Starbucks--there's like one in Waterfront and one in front of that damn steam clock. Just don't go here unless you want to pay too much for a mediocre drink, mediocre service, and probably COVID at some point. Their baked stuff is way overpriced and pretty gross, definitely taste like they all sit in the display fridge for a while. Also don't ever order their Chai, it's cheaper to wait until a rainy day and drink the milky gutter water outside the cafe instead. Maybe the baristas feel the same and that's why their turnover is also pretty high. I pass by here all the time and see different people every few weeks! read more

* Watery espresso and WAAAAY overpriced baked goods * I've never been in a cafe where the barista spent about 90 seconds grooming the coffee before tampering it. It was as if she was a frustrated artist putting the finishing touches on her masterpiece. It would have been even more impressive if it made a good shot of espresso. But the espresso was just a bit watery somehow. Not sure how that happened after her 90 seconds of massaging the beans. Perhaps it let the ground beans spend too much time in the air before making the damned coffee? Yeah, that must be it. Or perhaps it is that she took the excess ground coffee and put it back into the grinder, so that likely the grinder has lots of older ground coffee mixing with the newer and getting over worked? Yeah, that definitely is it. It is a shame because they are using 49th parallel beans, which normally are quite good. Too bad they aren't handling them well. After peeking through the white paper for a few months, they finally opened about a month ago. I can now hop down to get my fix almost without getting wet and wearing my smoking jacket (well maybe not). They are still getting the bugs ironed out and waiting for some new comfortable lounge furniture but overall great start! They have a Thomas Haas trained pastry chef that is doing a great job. New items keep popping up and without exception, all are very good. Rich but great quality. Test is doing a croissant that stands up to Thomas' own which is a tall order. The coffee beans are from 49th Parallel and they use the Mirage Espresso Machine with a classic lever system. Very cool and they are well trained getting good crema out of each shot. Overall great traditional capuccino very close to what 49th does in their West 4th location and I don't have to drive. Decor is evolving and still needs some finishing and warming up. Apparently there is a banquet that is coming that will help a lot. Food is also evolving and I am sure will continue to get better. Opening hours need to be consistent. 7am is what was posted and it needs to not change. We desperately needed a great coffee choice in the hood that was open by 7am. read more

I don't get this: Medium Americano is $2.65. Large Americano is $3.10 Both are two shots. The girl at the counter claimed that it was because of the extra-sized cup. Fair enough, but I had my OWN cup with me. I asked for an extra shot in my Large and the total came to $4.87! I had to cancel the order, and got a sour look. This is a fantastic place for coffee and snacks. Their baked good are amazing, and I love the fact they offer a lot of vegan and sugar free options. The hemp bars were so incredible that I bought three. The coffee is also excellent, as they serve 49th Parallel which is one of the best. The Armenian man who helped me, whose name I forget, was one of the nicest, most knowledgeable, friendly and helpful people I've ever met. You can't judge this book by the cover. Not that the cover is bad, but my first impression of Coffeebar was kind of cafeteria-like. It's really not though. Once you order and take a seat in the hallway-like room you get a better understanding of what they were going for. The signature chairs and interesting light fixtures kind of saved it for me. Of course the coffee is damn good and they also offer Eightfold Eats vegan and gf goods. I had a delicious cranberry walnut cookie that I found really satisfying, even though I had skipped lunch. This place really doesn't get the traffic it deserves. Everyone seems to flock to the other nearby coffee spots but in actuality this coffee is just as good as the other great places. Solid 49th Parallel beans and good preparation make for quality coffee beverages. As for food, the assortment is fresh and affordable. The breakfast wraps are maybe a little stodgy though, but when you're looking for something to address your morning hunger pangs, try the potato chorizo wrap. read more

Espresso macchiato. Fantastic. I like my coffee strong and with flavor; this was exactly it. They say they make it 1:1 ratio between espresso shots (2) and milk. I'm not a creamy or sugary type drinker, so this was good; strong taste, I might get them to lessen the milk a tad bit more tho just as personal preference. The shop is a glass box with a trendy vibe, quite a few groups just chatting/catching up. Pretty relaxing. Oh, people watching is great with those glass walls. I'm spoiled by my "but what do you mean not everyone understands my Starbucks-ized way of ordering" mentality. Most coffee shops I go to, I accidentally stutter out the words "1 pump vanilla, non-fat", and they look at me like i'm a bit nuts when asking for a latte. Or even worse, they tell me they *just don't do that* and make me feel awful for abusing their sensibilities - "how dare I want to drink their awesome coffee that way"! Well, thankfully, these guys let me abuse their awesome 49th Parallel Coffee - you know, basically the same roasters as Artigiano (owned by brothers, I think), but here they actually have non-fat milk. Came in on a day off to get some work done and enjoyed mellow music (light trance, then guitars, even a banjo!) and the great people-watching as they went past. The Wi-fi is reliable, and the latte was delicious. One complaint, again due to my Starbucks-ized habits? No menu posted on a wall or anywhere I could see it. I actually paused for a good 30 s as I was looking for something, somewhere, that would tell me what they made. The tea menu is nice and prominent, but coffee/other drinks? perhaps a small menu somewhere would be good - for those days where I feel like having something new. Till then, I'm just going to assume THEY CAN MAKE ANYTHING and test them on it :) You can bet I'm coming back. read more

CoffeeBar has a great location, and as other reviewers have noted, brings a well-needed presence to the Gastown coffee choices. I work across the street, and was excited to see a nice cafe in the works. The coffee is excellent, and I can see there are some growing pains getting started regarding the speed of service and a general sense of being settled. Not a lot of food was out when I got there first thing this morning, but my latté was excellent. I'm happy to go back. read more

My buddy, Danny V., and I were strolling the historical Gastown for some sightseeing, and photo taking. From a distance, we both noticed a Coffeebar sign, and the sleek interior design of this establishment. So we decided to have lunch here. The layout of Coffeebar was pretty cool. It seemed to have a peaceful and relaxing vibe. Coffeebar looked like a perfect hangout - nicely lit space, trendy furniture, and indie music in the background. A super-cool chill spot to bring a laptop and study, or work. There were plenty of tables and chairs available on this Saturday afternoon. Here's what I ordered: Cappuccino: ($3.10) Delicious! Strong with a lot of flavor. The boost of energy it provided me was awesome. I ended up walking 10 more blocks of exploring Vancouver. Breakfast Burrito: ($5.50) Scrambled eggs, potatoes, and cheese. Wrapped around a whole wheat tortilla. The staff even toasted the burrito and cut it in half for me, and Danny V. The burrito hit the spot, and was fantastic! read more

Coffeeshop is mostly made of glass and backs onto a quaint courtyard, across which is one of my favourite spots in Gastown, Boneta. I like it here. I don't enjoy my coffee houses empty, and Coffeebar is never that. I know people make jokes about the pretentiousness of others camping out in public with their Macbooks and working (or at least being seen to work) but in a way I find that comforting - it implies the vibe is as it should be. I see mixed reviews about the quality of the coffee here, but unless you're a connoisseur or a coffee snob that may not matter. In my inexpert opinion it's indiscernible to that of Milano, and it comes ten times faster and with a smile. Sometimes the baristas look like they just rolled out of bed, but that's no different to any JJ Bean. They make nice coffee, and all the pretty glowing Apple logos help me feel right at home. read more

I like this place - it's open till 11pm on Fri-Sun. as I got politely booted out 7pm at another coffee place. Their goodies look delectable - I chose almond croissant. At 7pm it's not at its crunchy-ist state but nonetheless very good. The seatings are spacious and you can either choose to sit facing the Water Street or the quaint back alley. I only had hot chocolate tonight - it's not overly sweet and I can taste the dark chocolate. I will have to come back another time to try their espresso drinks which they use 49th Parallel beans (did they change the packaging to the retro green and brownie brown?). They also sell mini bags of chips, salad, desserts, sandwiches, the whole lunch gang. Even their signature mug/saucer sets are for sale ($18.95?). It has nice ambiance music too. read more

DO NOT buy a GIFT CARD from these guys! Their policy is archaic, you must spend the entire value of the gift card upon use, no change is given and they keep the gift card upon redemption. I was charged $10 for a $3.50 coffee, the clerk told me "sorry, I CAN'T give you change." WTF?! They are the only coffee shop in all of Vancouver to do this. What an idiotic policy... Far better experience in terms of coffee and art draw today compared to the other place I went to earlier (see review on that). The staff here were awesome and warm. Plenty of room in the front and bag. They serve your drink in a double insulted cup instead of those annoying sleeves that fall off. Very good prices. Lots of assortment of gluten free, vegan and sugar free treats (made with dates). Functional tables to actually work. I spent 90 minutes working on my art piece here while people watching. My tea was extremely hot, therefore, it took around 90 minutes to get to drinkable temperature, therefore, it didn't matter that I was hogging space for 90 minutes. A great selection of pastries and snacks. They make a mean matcha latte, which is one of my favourite drinks. They serve exclusively 49th Parallel so if you are a fan this is a good place for you. If you are looking for a good people watching spot this is a great coffee shop. The back looking into Gaoler's Mews is very tranquil and good if you need a space for mental wandering, and also good for dog watching. I only got take out, and would like to have enjoyed a nice sit down in there, it seemed pretty different to the cafes I'm used to. Sadly the service from the cashier was not so great. Dear Coffeebar Management, I work across the street and come here regularly (I'm actually sitting here at one of your tables using your wifi to write this). Every time I come in, I'm reminded with how annoyed I am with you guys. Why in the world do you keep the Splenda and napkins behind the counter?! Because this one time you had someone come in and they took a lot of both and now you want to save sixty three cents? According to Yelp, there's 21 other coffee shops within four blocks of here -- all of which (based on extrapolation) keep handy, needed things (like Splenda and napkins) in a very accessible place. Do you know how annoying it is that every time I order a coffee (which, as you know, is delivered right at the cash register) I have to walk over the serving counter and try to get the attention of usually ultra-busy barista to ask for a measly pack of Splenda and a napkin. Next time I'm in, I hope to see the Splenda and napkins where they belong (next to all the other coffee necessities). read more
