This is a great espresso shop. Friendly people, good treats, excellent coffee. They roast their own beans, which is not guaranteed to be a good thing (roasting = hard!) but the few times I've bought their whole beans and and geeked out over the brewing process, I've been impressed. Usually I buy Stumptown, and Coffee Mob's beans compare favorably. I've had a chance to talk briefly with the owner, who's built relationships with the farms and suppliers where he sources his beans. Which is great to hear. He's not running a commodity operation. I'd buy beans here more often, but am a bit allergic to paying over a dollar an ounce for coffee. Such brain-rattling prices aren't unusual these days, and are justified by what goes into making coffee this good. Nevertheless, I need to save a few dollars each month for the boring things, like a place to sleep. Anyway. The baristas know what they're doing. They make espresso from single-origin beans, which they change up from time to time. It's a good trick if you can pull it off, and helps keep things interesting. Edited to add: I've become more of a geek over the last year, and have been sampling shots every place I hear good things about, and sometimes also at my old haunts. Time after time, Coffee Mob has been blowing everyone else away. I haven't had a great espresso in all of Manhattan in 6 months--and it's not for lack of trying. I've been to Toby's, Culture, Madman, multiple times to Stumptown, and am always at least a little disappointed. I've done a bit better in Brooklyn at Madeline and Parkside. Less well at Hungry Ghost. Not sure what's up ... is everyone dialing it in for milk drinks?? Anyway. The Mob is kicking everyone's ass. It's worth a trip if you're a fanatic. Seating is limited, so at busy times you might have a hard time sitting. The outdoor bench is nice in summer, even if it's not facing Brooklyn's most lush and scenic corner. I like that the baristas double as dj's, spinning vintage vinyl on an old turntable plugged in next to the La Marzocco--even if this kind of thing means local rents are about to double. read more

Their name is all-telling!! I used to like this place as I've been coming here for about 4 months now. A week and a half ago I went in and got my usual oat milk 16 Oz latte, to be charged $8.90! I have definitely NEVER paid that before. It's usually about 6.50, which is still pricey to me. The entire time my mouth was on the floor, the guy took 10 minutes to make my drink because he was trying to explain to me how I was actually getting a discount as oat milk was the most sought-after milk. He still hadn't made my coffee so I asked for the not-so-sought-after soy and he said all their alt milks are in fact the same price. Soooo I'll never go here again! I've had the most delicious lattes across Europe and even Manhattan (looking at you Lazy Llama!) and none are this expensive! And at Newkirk Plaza, which is kind of out in the boonies in Brooklyn. This place deserved a one star but they atleast knew what a Cortado was so it gets a two star. The coffee was decent, milk wasn't burned. It was the pick me up needed. However, the service was horrible. I walked in and Max eye contact with the barista/cashier.. I might as well been invisible as he didn't acknowledge me. If you didn't know that the area was being gentrified all you have to do is walk by this place and it's crystal clear, it sticks out like a sore hipster thumb. Going in here I made sure to keep my obnoxious sunglasses on, I didn't want to show my face. The guy behind the counter is the exact carbon copy of the type of hipster that you'd expect to find in this place, but I digress, the coffee was exactly as I thought it would be, mediocre and bland, it's no different from what you'd get in the Dunkin Donuts around the corner. It is spring and the winds that carried the seeds of the hipsters into Williamsburg, Bed Stuy, Bushwick and Crown Heights have now reached East Flatbush because yesterday Coffee Mob, a quaint corner coffee cafe, opened for business. Although they have limited space, they have done a good job decorating and making use of the space they do have. The staff is friendly but are still adjusting and trying to develop their store identify. The prices are a little steep for the neighborhood but I said that about the OxCart Tavern and the former Whisk Cafe and one is still going strong and had the owner of the Whisk not been murdered, I surmise they too would still be around. I am starting by giving Coffee Mob 3 stars. I had a decaf coffee that did not blow me a way but was A-OK. I did not try the pastries or bagels and I was assured by Buck, the owner, who sincerely wants his place to succeed, that after they have been opened a while, they plan to expand their currently limited menu. Ditmas Park is starting to get some seriously strong options for coffee. If you're looking for an amazing kitchen, Coffee Mob is not what you're looking for, that's Cafe Madeline's job. If you're just looking for perfectly-made, lovingly-crafted, weapons-grade coffee prepared by people who are unhealthily obsessed with their craft, this is the place. Every single barista, including the owner, Buck, who's there most of the time, knows exactly how to make coffee. Perfectly. Every time. But the reason I like Coffee Mob above all the others in the area is not the espresso or the pour-over, even though those are great: perfect temperature, perfect balance of flavor. The reason I'll go out of my way for Coffee Mob is because I am thoroughly addicted to cold brew coffee, and Buck is even more obsessed with cold brew than I am. Seriously, he might have a problem. But it's a problem that benefits me, for the time being, so I'm cool with it. He's constantly experimenting with new blends, new methods, new concoctions, new ALL KINDS OF STUFF to make his cold brew better, and it constantly gets better. It started out as good, and now it's the best in New York City, in my experience. Living in Texas for over a decade led me to some of the best cold brew in the world, and Coffee Mob is up there with the best Austin has to offer, and cold brew is one of the only things Austin takes seriously. I say that with love. I do still love Austin dearly. Summer in New York is right around the corner, and our humidity and lack of modern air conditioning will make hot coffee a sweat-inducing inconvenience. This place is overly expensive and the owner is greedy. I understand it's coffee from Cuba or wherever, but they charge for the smallest things like ice --I kid you not I once ordered an iced latte and my total was about $10 and the owner said, "Oh wait, I forgot to charge you for the ice" and my total was now $12. Don't you just love being charged for solid water? ...another incident, I ordered a small coffee, and my total was $2.75, and later when I checked my bank account, I was charged $3.75. They took tip from me without my permission! And a whole $1 too! I don't go here often and the only rare time I will go here is when I'm running late and don't have time to stop anywhere else, because this place is very close to where I live. I have tried to like this place many times since they opened. It's a great location and they play decent music. Otherwise, the coffee is awful and the baked goods are pretty hit or miss. I bought a blueberry scone yesterday that was so bad I spit it out! The seating is also limited and uncomfortable. There are always people there and they clearly have their regulars but I just don't see what they're seeing. Walk a few more blocks to Milk and Honey for a much better experience. read more

This place has benefited from good location. The service was usually only alright and the pastries were often meh, but I had a coffee punch card and wanted my free cup! I went one day and the barista told me excitedly "now the time time you come your coffee will be free!" I went in on my birthday no less for my free cup only to be rudely rebuffed by another barista who told me that I still had to buy a cup, which was total crap, even after I told her what a fellow coworker told me and of course showed her my card. Thankfully another customer stepped up to kindly pay for my cup which she didn't have to do at all. Now a cup of coffee is only about $3 bucks so the price wasn't the issue. The issue was the rudeness from the barista. Again that's really unfortunate because this place could be great for the neighborhood but I won't be visiting again. read more

This morning I forgot my wallet and, IN ADDITION to giving me a coffee and croissant on credit, Buck the owner lent me his Metro card so that I wouldn't have to walk back home. I think they're focus is misaligned with their clientele's needs and wants. Sure the coffee is what's important but they seem to be missing some finer points on how to deal with customers. Dont get me wrong they are nice and careful and informative. I noticed however the outlets were plugged up. People like using their devices in a cafe. That is a big no no plugging up outlets. I know because of this alone they will not last long here. If they were more inclusive and accommodating of freelancers and the laptop, iPad, smart phone crowd, they'd kill it. I don't know how I survived without coffee mob for so long. Let me start by saying that if I were writing this review in April, it would be a different review. Back when it opened the prices were totally out of line for the neighborhood and the sizing, baristas seemed frazzled and...well...high, and the coffee, while good, was inconsistent. Summer has seen a big turn around for this place. The owner is around, keeps his ear to the neighborhood and has actively made adjustments. The baristas are on a regular schedule, and even though they can be super distracted (they constantly forget to either give me my change or my coffee), they're friendly and non-judgmental. And the coffee is now just consistently good and priced accordingly. It's a source of pride in a micro-neighborhood that hasn't seen much of Cortelyou's growth- just cell phone stores and 99 cent stores. Full disclosure, I don't drink coffee and I've never had the coffee here. I live nearby and come here for the chai, hot chocolate and occasionally tea. I appreciate that they have been open even during the worst snow. Service always seems friendly without being overly chatty. I'm really glad they updated so you can pay with a credit/debit card now. I hope that this is a sign they are doing well and here to stay. I like the turntable, though it is a bit of a hipster touch. I used to order the chai all the time because it was from a homemade concentrate and not too sweet. It had a depth of flavor and spice that made it stand apart from the cloyingly sweet chais at other coffee shops. I think they recently switched to using a supplier now, which makes me kind of sad. It's still better than other pre-made chais I've tried, but it tastes too strongly of cinnamon. It's nice that they don't run out anymore, but I really wish that the coffee shop owner would find a way to scale up the production of his own concoction because that's what had me coming back for more : (. I met uphere with my sister for brunch, but didn't realize it's a coffee place for the most part. It's a quickie grab and eat kinda food like bagels and pastries.
