This was such a great coffee stop! Their Chai was so yummy and creamy, it was sinful. I may have added some honey Jim Bean to mine after I left, and I'm just saying...it was an excellent addition to this drink. I'm a native Californian, so the charming walk from the metro through this picturesque Brownstone back drop made me fall in love with the cute neighborhood. I loved the smell of the place as soon as I walked in. There was an assortment of fresh beans and teas to buy. If I wasn't already lugging around an uneaten Unicorn Bagel, I might have tried to take some of this perfectly blended Chai home with me. It was neat to see a coffee store that encouraged setting up a tab. Like this is the EPITOME of a quaint neighborhood coffee shop. It almost reminded me of what a coffee store would feel like if it were opened by Trader Joe's. I'm a picky coffee connoisseur, but was pleasantly surprised to find such a tasty selection of espresso and drip blends at this place. I'm also happy when I can find milk alternatives besides soy when I'm traveling. I highly suggest checking this place out if you're in the neighborhood. I must have had the surly barista/sales person that other reviewers mentioned. A very unpleasant young man. After reading so many of the positive reviews I wanted to try out this place and get some of the Irish chocolate/candy they carry. (Take an emotional trip by home.) I was excited and took several trains from Harlem to get there -- it was a bit of a journey with track issues and changes. I had to take three trains and then even switch twice due to issues. I was hoping it was worth it...When I walked in I was amazed by the fabulous look and smell of the various sacks of coffee beans. Really impressive.. The young man ignored me and continued adding beans to various containers. I tried to make small talk and commented: "Oh, I thought this was a sit-down cafe." It's small and compact and I would have loved to sit down for a few minutes with a nice coffee. Instead of joining in on the small talk he just said: "Well, it's not." Yes, that was obvious as soon as I walked in the door.....It was a few minutes before the barista made eye contact or even asked if I needed anything. Not even a smile. (Quite unpleasant for such a nice place.) I didn't get a coffee but may go back to buy some beans (as long as he's not there.) I left with a small bar of Cadbury's and some pastilles and was happy enough. (4 stars for the cafe -- but minus one for the rude server.) read more

Friendly and great drinks! While in Park Slope neighborhood on an early Saturday morning, I decided that I needed coffee or a source of caffeine. I already passed by Blue Bottle, so I saw that this place was a few blocks away and decided to give it a try. I am a huge fan of small coffee shops, and after discovering Third Rail Coffee (my ultimate bias in West Village), I always love venturing out to see other shops, as well. As soon as you go in this corner shop, you are welcomed by huge burlap sacks of coffee beans, bags of tea leaves, and walls of coffee/tea decor. It had a cute "hipster" vibe, and the worker was very friendly! I loved looking at all the items while waiting for my drink, it was the perfect place to explore if you had a few minutes. I had a cappuccino, and even though I forgot to request a lower temperature, I was relieved that it was the perfect temperature (not too hot). The coffee taste itself was slightly strong for a cappuccino, I thought, but it was a great blend with the foam of the milk. I noticed they had a lot of different flavored drinks (honey latte, etc.) that I was curious to try another time. And, they even had some tea selections I never heard of before. I loved that the worker made conversation with me and was very friendly, despite the time being so early on a Saturday. This is a great go-to spot for coffee if you're visiting the hospital nearby but want something besides deli coffee or Starbucks. I've been here maybe four or five times, mainly for the tea although I did get a few cappuccinos as well. Let's start with the tea: The tea is stored in transparent jars which I can understand for display purposes but it's not good for the tea. DavidsTea's way of doing things is better in this regard. Their tea selection also skews towards western steeping. Many black and herbal teas as well as some Assmas and blends. There are some greens and whites as well but if you want some traditional gong fu teas this place doesn't have much of a selection. Autumnal Darjeeling: A very solid tea for the price. Nice muscatel notes and a clean mouth feel. Brewed western style with two grams of tea per cup with a four minute steep using 96C water makes a great cup of tea. Is it incredible? No, but it's also cheap at $2.50/ounce so I don't expect amazing. This is the tea that goes into my tumbler in the morning thanks to the taste and price. Ceylon: Malty with a heavier mouthfeel. Price is about the same as the Darjeeling. A pretty good tea and can replace the Darjeeling if you like the malty notes more than the muscatel notes of the Darjeeling. I prefer the lighter, cleaner Darjeeling but that's personal preference. All in all I'd also recommend this as an everyday tea but, as with the Darjeeling, not what you'd pull out to impress. Same brew parameters as the Darjeeling as well, though you can use a bit less tea if the flavor is too strong for you. Gunpowder Green: Very vegetal with a slightly thick mouthfeel. Not my thing but that's a preference, not a problem. The problem is that the tea over-brews extremely quickly and, when over-brewed, is quite bitter. I've tried a ton of combinations, mainly with my Yixing Gaiwan, and can't get around the over-brew problem. Not something I'd recommend. As for the cappuccinos, they're brewed very strong. Very, very strong. If you need a caffeine hit in a relatively good tasting cup then this is your place. If you want to savor the finer points of your drinks then there are better places to get your drink. This comes down to personal preference as well but I tend to go elsewhere for my coffee. I've not tried their beans at home so I can't comment on that. I'd give Java Joe 3.5 stars but the staff pushes it to 4 stars. They've always been incredibly friendly and welcoming which makes for a great atmosphere. The slightly cramped but very homely feeling store also helps convey that feeling. Some other thoughts: - The ultimate malt balls were a bit meh, definitely not ultimate. - Teas are only sold by the quarter pound which sucks. - You're sure to find a gift for a tea or coffee lover here. Tons of teapots and brewing hardware. - There are no seats. This is a to-go coffee place only. read more

Hey have a good selection of coffees in a variety of roasts, including two espressos. They also have lots of loose leaf tea, both pre-packaged and sold in bulk, both actual tea and lots of herbal options. They fit a lot of coffee and tea and equipment into a very small space. They make a good coffee to drink, too, and made me a flat white even though it's not on their menu. As you'd expect, the place smells amazing and it's worth stopping in just for that. The staff are friendly and helpful. The prices seem competitive for freshly roasted coffee, and it's a nice local business that's worth supporting. They also have a rack of U.K. sweets and snacks, like the U.K. line of Cadbury stuff. read more

Okay, I'm kind of weirded out by how they weigh out the coffee so you get EXACTLY a pound or half-pound or whatever, but I assume that attention to detail extends to every other part of this business. The minute I opened the door and the aroma washed over me, I knew this was a good shop. One wall is lined with different roasts, stacked several layers high and deep. Across the tiny store you can find a wonderful selection of teas, accessories, and tools. I decided to try the Dark Star first, after seeing it mentioned in reviews here and smelling it in the shop. Love everything about Joes. The coffee: Lots of different kinds of iced coffee daily- generally a dark blend, medium blend, and some sort of flavor. It is ALWAYS good and never stale. The service: can occasionally be slow but each person has their own style. One guy plays metal while another plays classic jazz. They all know my name and my drink because... The convenience: joes has a tab/upfront pay system that saves me a lot of time in the AM. Just pick up the coffee and run. They do not, however, have seating, so please don't be shocked by that. This review is strictly for the beans sold here; never had JJ's brewed coffee or tea. We have a coffee maker that requires extremely fresh beans. This has become my go to spot for beans. JJ's has a good but small selection which is fine for me - not too overwhelming and the prices are fair: most coffee is $8 per half pound. The guy behind the counter (I'll get his name one day) is very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend the DeadHead blend and the Costa Rican. read more

A friend and I just found this place today and I'm in love. Such a selection of coffees and loose teas! I bought some loose spice chai and irish breakfast -- haven't tried the Irish breakfast yet, but the chai is delicious. I didn't get a prepared drink, but my friend did and it was delicious. Normally I prefer just straight-up coffee, but I will definitely be trying more of their fancy drinks in the future. Have been coming here since 1999 and there's nothing quite like it. My morning coffee is perfect every day - it's always their Java Joe blend or pumpkin around the holidays. On a special "treat myself day" to a splurgie hot drink I ask for their recommendation and am often handed back 12 ounces of clever specialness whether it's a flavored latte, an unusual chai or a Jumpin' Joe to get me through the day. And that's just the coffee! They're one of the few places that have specialty candies, cookies, teas, kettles, cups, thermoses, infusers, and more. As for their level of customized customer service, I can attest to sitting in one of their chairs and pointing to things while they assembled all my holiday gifts for me one year. This is my favorite coffee place on earth. Why? When you walk in, you're overcome by the smell of the fresh beans. Not in a bad way, of course. On a nice day, when they keep the door open, you can smell it from the corner. Now, when YOU walk in, you'll be greeted by a very genuine hello. It's different with every person in the shop. One may be warm and cheerful, one might be a simple "hey," but none are a scripted line or forced auto-response. If you're nice, they're nice. If you're rude, they're rude. It took me a while to realize this, as I was quiet and they were quiet, and now, when I walk in, they know my name and my order and have a nice conversation if it isn't busy. The selection is out of this world. I don't really make coffee at home, but when I'm having people over I go buy a half pound of a seasonal blend, and everyone loves it! What I do buy a ton of is their bulk teas. They're amazing. And the selection of bagged teas is great, too. I'm also surprised that no one has really mentioned the imported candy and treats. I made a fabulous Easter basket centerpiece from their British chocolates this year, and my New Years guests enjoyed gourmet chocolate-filled candy canes at the fireworks! The espresso is my favorite. They use an Italian roast that is not too harsh. I've never added sugar to any of their drinks, because the flavor of the coffee/espresso is so good! I remember having to go to work early one morning, and they weren't open yet... I went to another shop nearby , got an espresso (French Roast), gagged, and tossed it. Like Veronica mentioned, they have a credit card minimum, but can charge you for 10 cups up front and keep tab for you. (And they also give you a free one!) I keep a running tab for espresso. It's super quick and easy, and saves me from having 50 charges a month for coffee. One recent addition is that they now have sidewalk seating! Bought a latte at Starbucks one morning and the next morning got one from Java Joe's. No comparison, the JJ coffee SO much better and nice service too.
