Good place good atmosphere met some business partners there last week the coffee was ok but the layout in the atmosphere or definitely very nice my only minor complaint was for all the staff that seem to be there no one really seemed to be doing much. I know its a cafe so they're not considered waiters but the only time we talked to any staff was when we walked up to ask for something. Just thought a little extra attention from any of the five or six bored guys behind the counter i would have given a perfect 5 stars. Good place for coffee and a Danish or croissant. Pretty quiet atmosphere for study and business meetings. And you can smell the ocean and watch the girls walking by with thier surfboards. read more

I've come to this coffee shop a few times and have had good experiences, however, on February 1st 2020, I had gone inside to order my latte while my wife waited outside at the outdoor seating area. After ordering I went back outside to sit with my wife. Then after a few minutes I went back in to grab my order. Wen I came back outside I found my wife standing there upset because one of the staff members began stacking all of the chairs and asked everyone outside to get up off of their chairs because they were about to close. I completely understand stacking the chairs that no one is using, but she asked a family, who had an elderly family member, to get off of the chairs because they were closing. I've worked at a restaurant before and we all knew that we should never ask people to leave just because it's closing time. And its not like it was 15 minutes after closing time... or even 5 minutes! It was literally 5pm and she was telling people to get off of there chairs! I hadn't even received my order and she was asking people to leave. This was completely unacceptable. My latte tasted very good by the way, but I still will not be coming back for another. read more

I love to come here for their super smooth espresso drinks. Hands-down the best so I latte I've ever had. No bitter taste. It's hard to go wrong with their breakfast items. I like the bacon scramble and the salsa they make in house and serve on the side. Their croissants are out of this world. Flaky and stretchy at the same Time. To start, I used to go to Miracles Cafe in Cardiff 2-3 times a month. When it closed, the main cook, Jose, told me he was going to open a restaurant in the next few years. So 1-2 years ago he opened Cafe Ipe. It's cool because some of the menu items are the same, but here's my beef... 1) They always run out of stuff. I mean, if you get there at 9:45AM there's a pretty good chance they won't have bagels, english muffins and/or croissants. All of these things go into menu items so it's a double drag. 2) They will not work with you on the menu for a single thing. First example: they have bacon on the menu but you can't sub it for anything that has ham or turkey. Or vice versa. Second example: my wife has allergies and she simply asked to have one of their scrambles with ham and eggs only (hold the sprouts, tomatoes, salsa, etc). They wouldn't even let her take off the other items on the plate to simply serve her ham and eggs, for the same price!!! Whaaaaat? 3) If you get there 10-minutes before they close they make sure they tell you that they are closing in 10-minutes. Kind of like they would really not like to have to make your order. Now it does get two stars because... 1) The coffee is amazing. Jose obviously brought over the Miracles' secrets to great coffee. Americano heaven. 2) The place is great to chill, inside or out. Good vibe. 3) Close enough to other places that if they run out of what you want, you can go eat somewhere close! Doh! read more

Cool, funky vibe. On a sunny Sat. AM, the patio was full but plenty of seating inside. As others have written, place is a bit pricey and my iced chai was quite bland. Pastries were fresh and v. good. The potential is palpable but... Roasting your own coffee, and in view of customers, is as close to an end to end experience as most of us will get. Fun to watch the process then enjoy the results. But Café Ipe is let down both by the customer service experience and the average coffee served. This is my 2nd visit, but my 1st review, both times I have felt unwelcome or perhaps an annoyance to the staff. They just don't seem to be happy at all, no smiles, no real interest. Some cafes get away with that as they produce exceptional coffees but I cant say that about the latte and macchiato I ordered on my two visits. One of the first things that is obvious is how quickly the water pours through the head when an espresso shot is pulled - the grind is wrong! It is a simple thing to learn and get right. Café Ipe could be great with a few tweaks, its a great location with plenty of seating (in & out) and have seen live music on the weekends, but pay some respect to the roast and take some care with the shots. read more

the good: the best coffee around and tasty little glazed donuts. the bad: not enough interior space to really hang out comfortably. There is an outside patio but they have taken to having live music there on the weekends. I went there hoping to have a coffee and read last Saturday and a group of Hansen-like boys playing earsplitting music out on the patio completely dominated the space, so much so that you couldn't really even have a conversation if you wanted to. If you don't want to be in the middle of a tween rock concert, go during the week, or get your coffee and donuts to go. read more

Love the coffee but a word of advice on customer service ... When a patron walks in the door and asks for a drink "for here", please don't tell them "we close in 15 mins so we'd like to make your drink to go!". That's just plain rude! On a separate occasion, I walked in some 20 mins before closing time and was told I couldn't get an espresso drink because it was closing time and they already cleaned the machine out. If you advertise that you stay open until 6pm and I make it a point to travel to your store specifically for coffee ... I don't want to hear that! read more

A roaster in Leucadia! And a trained experienced professional barista who really knows what she's doing! Ristretto cappuccino! If you love espresso, this is THE place in North County. Free WiFi. VG's doughnuts. Welcoming staff: they are very nice people. Excellent freshly roasted beans to take home. I go for coffee in the morning and I don't want to leave. Upping my rating to 5 stars. GO! Update. As with any espresso house, baristas are key and it's extremely difficult to make sure they are all trained. IPE's management does a much better job of training baristas than any other north county coffee shop. And, if you're lucky enough to have queen barista Tiffany serve you, you'll have the best espresso in the county. read more

I really thought this place was going to be a lot better. It let me down. The service was subpar, the pour over was just okay, the place was packed with not much seating, and the overall experience was just a let down. Looking at it from the outside and hearing and reading great things about this place- I expected greatness. All I got was disappointment. The customers seemed really down to earth though- I would've loved to have gotten into conversation with a few of them- wish I could say the same regarding the staff. I'll give Cafe Ipe 3 stars and after I go back a second time, I'll review again. I give it 3 stars because I like the vibe, the idea, and the food was great, but the coffee was so-so. The main reason I give it a 3 was because of the customer service. The guy who made my coffee and rang me up at the cashier was not friendly and seemed like he was annoyed to be helping us. Then he asked a question in a smart ass way, asking if I wanted a "real" macchiato or just a starbucks macchiato. I felt sorta weird when he said that, like he thought I was an idiot and didn't know what I was ordering. I'm torn. I had one 5-star experience, and one 2-star experience. Why this place deserves 5 stars (from my first visit): - Another single origin joint, with pour over method. I want more of these in San Diego, I'm tired of having to drive to LA or the Bay Area to get it. - They do also do great espresso drinks (i think they major in it) - Their food is GREAT- had a great panini there, with great fresh ingredients. - The place screams hipster. In a good way. - It's so much more open than Lofty Bean (the other nearby coffee snob of a place to be), with more places to sit and a nice outdoor area. - The bar seats surrounding the giant roaster... I like it a lot. - Speaking of the roaster, the place shares space with its roasting company, Revolution Roasters. I like the names of their beans ("the dancing goat" is the name of their ethiopian ha.) Why this place deserves 2 stars (from my second visit): - They hired a new guy to run the cashier. He is REALLY slow... which I have some patience for... but it was the type of slow that he was haha. He just seemed really spaced out in a different world. He seemed disheveled and unprofessional in his demeanor, much different from the baristas. - This spaciness was the foundation for my next 2-star reason... they had run out of filters for pour over, so I had to get french press. No problem. But I waited and waited... and this french press never came. I went to check once, and I saw it sitting there 15 minutes later. Didn't say anything... then heard him trying to whisper quietly to the more experienced barista... and the barista annoyingly telling him he had to pour it back in and let it settle. I gather that he had poured out the french press without pushing down the plunger! So I went up to inquire, and he guiltily just said "a few more minutes". Finally, around 10:30am (I had gotten there at 10), the more professional barista personally delivered the cup to me apologetically. eeks. 30 minutes to get a cup of coffee? this is troublesome. what if it was later in the day and I was having the shakes (yeah, i'm that addicted) and I had to wait a HALF HOUR for my cup of calm???? For now, I'm giving the place a 3-star review... but I plan on revisiting. I hope my next visit will be back to my first 5-star experience! I want this place to succeed! read more

I went today for the first time and my experience was awesome. I got the Nitro coffee and it was great...I highly recommend it! The outdoor seating is big and covered by trees. I stumbled upon this place driving by one day. There is no place to park, we had to park on the street far away. Not easy when you have kids and a handicap mother. It has a laid back vibe and the coffee was great. Only thing is maybe too laid back. We were waiting in line and a guy walked right in front of us and ordered. So rude. And the girl taking his order didn't even say a thing, while witnessing him cutting in front. I will definitely give them another try because I did enjoy the latte. The coffee is perfect! My husband grabbed me some magical breakfast sandwich with massive amounts of egg, cheese, tomato, and avocado stuffed into a croissant the size of a salad plate. If you roast your own beans, at least you got to know how to make it extracted right. Got my cap with barely any taste, foams are weak and over heated. The good: Dan from revolution roasters coffee beans. The BAD: Horrible customer service, employees that acted as if they are doing you a favor, the owner keeping people from their duties, and letting them run out of basic necessities. You'd think that with a guy roasting amazing coffee on premises it would be the best place to grab a cup and a bite. Dan the coffee roaster has an amazing knowledge of the art of roasting, and I will continue to go out of my way to buy beans and make it at home. The cafe Ipa side though is a train wreck. Its great when a store can combine employees that move like molasses with an equal dose of horrific customer service, and the added benefit of taking amazing beans and making them truly average tasting coffee. Both times I tried to get a cup I had a hard time just telling who was actually working. Then I realized that the "manager" was lost in conversation with what I assumed was his girlfriend. Turns out that it was the owner named Karen. What business owner keeps the guy who supposed to make things flow away from that duty during a busy time of the day? It was a moot point though, they had run out of milk and were running to the local grocery store to get some. Really? You're a coffee shop...how do you run out of milk? Not once, but on two different occasions while I visited there. I won't call the people behind the counter Barista's, as that would be an insult to people who take pride in their ability to craft you the coffee that you want. Buy your beans from Dan or go some where else. I've given this place three chances, and they failed impressively on each try. There are many good coffee shops in the area I'd suggest you start with those. read more

OK I was already excited to be moving to Leucadia, but after discovering the coffee here (walking distance from our new place!!) I am even more excited. This is the best coffee I have ever tasted. Coffee coffee is an awesome place on 101! They roast coffee in shop (revolution roasters) so you know it's good coffee- not the best tasting in Encinitas(ironsmith is down the roast) but still in the top three. The place really shines when you talk the store itself! It's outdoor patio under a large (oak?) tree is an ideal place to read, study or just relax. Somehow the tree and next door building block out the fact that its along a major road! I'll definitely be returning. read more

Coffe is good, but I have the same feelings as many others who've reviewed. Customer service is where it's lacking. Location is great; right on the 101 on Leucadia- you couldn't ask for a better spot. Almond milk latte is what I usually get anywhere I go, and it was very good. The cashier who rang us up, a young man with reddish hair was friendly. It was the woman (long brown hair) who made our coffee who was curt and grumpy. Lattes were messy and spilled over (didn't affect the taste) and when my boyfriend came up to the counter to pick them up he said excuse me and asked if they were ours just in case and the woman basically eye rolled and said yeah very rudely. Maybe she was having a really bad day, but hey everyone does and there's no need for your shitty attitude. It's just coffee lady. Good coffee, but with other shops so close by, no need to go here if someone's going to be grumpy like that. read more

Coming from the Seattle area, i have very high expectations of coffee shops. I've been to cafe Ipe several times, each time i was not disappointed. The staff is very friendly, but not annoyingly cheerful. I got an iced coffee (actually, iced cafe ole which the barista totally knew what it was) and it was perfect. Refreshing and delish. Prices are reasonable, has a great outdoor space to sit and relax. They have rotating local artists' work on the walls inside the cafe, which I really appreciate. read more
