I really thought this place was going to be a lot better. It let me down. The service was subpar, the pour over was just okay, the place was packed with not much seating, and the overall experience was just a let down. Looking at it from the outside and hearing and reading great things about this place- I expected greatness. All I got was disappointment. The customers seemed really down to earth though- I would've loved to have gotten into conversation with a few of them- wish I could say the same regarding the staff. I'll give Cafe Ipe 3 stars and after I go back a second time, I'll review again. I give it 3 stars because I like the vibe, the idea, and the food was great, but the coffee was so-so. The main reason I give it a 3 was because of the customer service. The guy who made my coffee and rang me up at the cashier was not friendly and seemed like he was annoyed to be helping us. Then he asked a question in a smart ass way, asking if I wanted a "real" macchiato or just a starbucks macchiato. I felt sorta weird when he said that, like he thought I was an idiot and didn't know what I was ordering. Anyways, I'm forgiving so I'll let it slide haha and I'll try it again because like I said, I like the vibe and the thought of it being a cool place to enjoy my time. read more

I'm torn. I had one 5-star experience, and one 2-star experience. Why this place deserves 5 stars (from my first visit): - Another single origin joint, with pour over method. I want more of these in San Diego, I'm tired of having to drive to LA or the Bay Area to get it. - They do also do great espresso drinks (i think they major in it) - Their food is GREAT- had a great panini there, with great fresh ingredients. - The place screams hipster. In a good way. - It's so much more open than Lofty Bean (the other nearby coffee snob of a place to be), with more places to sit and a nice outdoor area. - The bar seats surrounding the giant roaster... I like it a lot. - Speaking of the roaster, the place shares space with its roasting company, Revolution Roasters. I like the names of their beans ("the dancing goat" is the name of their ethiopian ha.) Why this place deserves 2 stars (from my second visit): - They hired a new guy to run the cashier. He is REALLY slow... which I have some patience for... but it was the type of slow that he was haha. He just seemed really spaced out in a different world. He seemed disheveled and unprofessional in his demeanor, much different from the baristas. - This spaciness was the foundation for my next 2-star reason... they had run out of filters for pour over, so I had to get french press. No problem. But I waited and waited... and this french press never came. I went to check once, and I saw it sitting there 15 minutes later. Didn't say anything... then heard him trying to whisper quietly to the more experienced barista... and the barista annoyingly telling him he had to pour it back in and let it settle. I gather that he had poured out the french press without pushing down the plunger! So I went up to inquire, and he guiltily just said "a few more minutes". Finally, around 10:30am (I had gotten there at 10), the more professional barista personally delivered the cup to me apologetically. eeks. 30 minutes to get a cup of coffee? this is troublesome. what if it was later in the day and I was having the shakes (yeah, i'm that addicted) and I had to wait a HALF HOUR for my cup of calm???? For now, I'm giving the place a 3-star review... but I plan on revisiting. I hope my next visit will be back to my first 5-star experience! I want this place to succeed! read more

I stumbled upon this place driving by one day. There is no place to park, we had to park on the street far away. Not easy when you have kids and a handicap mother. It has a laid back vibe and the coffee was great. Only thing is maybe too laid back. We were waiting in line and a guy walked right in front of us and ordered. So rude. And the girl taking his order didn't even say a thing, while witnessing him cutting in front. I will definitely give them another try because I did enjoy the latte. The coffee is perfect! My husband grabbed me some magical breakfast sandwich with massive amounts of egg, cheese, tomato, and avocado stuffed into a croissant the size of a salad plate. So ridiculously good. I'm really glad I don't live in San Diego. I would be so poor from eating out every single meal. read more

Tried after reading some good review, disappointed after visit. Agree with everyone else, good decor/spacious but lack on coffee skills. If you roast your own beans, at least you got to know how to make it extracted right. Got my cap with barely any taste, foams are weak and over heated. Maybe will give it another try later but I really think they need proper trained barista. 2 and a half star for this experience. read more

The good: Dan from revolution roasters coffee beans. The BAD: Horrible customer service, employees that acted as if they are doing you a favor, the owner keeping people from their duties, and letting them run out of basic necessities. You'd think that with a guy roasting amazing coffee on premises it would be the best place to grab a cup and a bite. Dan the coffee roaster has an amazing knowledge of the art of roasting, and I will continue to go out of my way to buy beans and make it at home. The cafe Ipa side though is a train wreck. Its great when a store can combine employees that move like molasses with an equal dose of horrific customer service, and the added benefit of taking amazing beans and making them truly average tasting coffee. Both times I tried to get a cup I had a hard time just telling who was actually working. Then I realized that the "manager" was lost in conversation with what I assumed was his girlfriend. Turns out that it was the owner named Karen. What business owner keeps the guy who supposed to make things flow away from that duty during a busy time of the day? It was a moot point though, they had run out of milk and were running to the local grocery store to get some. Really? You're a coffee shop...how do you run out of milk? Not once, but on two different occasions while I visited there. I won't call the people behind the counter Barista's, as that would be an insult to people who take pride in their ability to craft you the coffee that you want. Buy your beans from Dan or go some where else. I've given this place three chances, and they failed impressively on each try. There are many good coffee shops in the area I'd suggest you start with those. read more

OK I was already excited to be moving to Leucadia, but after discovering the coffee here (walking distance from our new place!!) I am even more excited. This is the best coffee I have ever tasted. I can imagine we'll be down each Sunday to get our cuppa and a week's supply of roast for at home grinding and pressing. Giving up caffeine is definitely OFF of the NY resolutions list. read more

Coffee coffee is an awesome place on 101! They roast coffee in shop (revolution roasters) so you know it's good coffee- not the best tasting in Encinitas(ironsmith is down the roast) but still in the top three. The place really shines when you talk the store itself! It's outdoor patio under a large (oak?) tree is an ideal place to read, study or just relax. Somehow the tree and next door building block out the fact that its along a major road! I'll definitely be returning. read more

Coffe is good, but I have the same feelings as many others who've reviewed. Customer service is where it's lacking. Location is great; right on the 101 on Leucadia- you couldn't ask for a better spot. Almond milk latte is what I usually get anywhere I go, and it was very good. The cashier who rang us up, a young man with reddish hair was friendly. It was the woman (long brown hair) who made our coffee who was curt and grumpy. Lattes were messy and spilled over (didn't affect the taste) and when my boyfriend came up to the counter to pick them up he said excuse me and asked if they were ours just in case and the woman basically eye rolled and said yeah very rudely. Maybe she was having a really bad day, but hey everyone does and there's no need for your shitty attitude. It's just coffee lady. Good coffee, but with other shops so close by, no need to go here if someone's going to be grumpy like that. read more

Coming from the Seattle area, i have very high expectations of coffee shops. I've been to cafe Ipe several times, each time i was not disappointed. The staff is very friendly, but not annoyingly cheerful. I got an iced coffee (actually, iced cafe ole which the barista totally knew what it was) and it was perfect. Refreshing and delish. Prices are reasonable, has a great outdoor space to sit and relax. They have rotating local artists' work on the walls inside the cafe, which I really appreciate. read more

This coffee shop changed my world. Cafe Ipe sets the bar for me and is the coffee shop I compare others to when I have to (*cringe*...just kidding) go elsewhere for my caffeine fix. Try their Americano--just do it. Revolution Roasters guys are the best, and the service is always friendly there too. I always try a place twice before I review... I enjoyed Coffee Coffee the first time in regard to food and beverage, service was not exactly friendly but decent. Unfortunately, my second attempt at this joint there was no improvement... I had ordered several food items for myself an my son, as well as an almond milk latte. The food was good, the latte was decent. About halfway through the meal my son needed to use the restroom so I informed one of the baristas that I would be right back, but within the few minutes we were in the bathroom all out food an drinks were cleaned up an thrown out. Being part of the industry myself I understand the desire to keep the place clean and inviting, but as a paying guest I was disappointed in having half my meal and latte being bussed. Especially, since I made it a point to tell someone that we were still eating and would be right back as well as leaving personal items on the table. We got a blueberry bagel, seasonal fruit, oatmeal, and a latte. All of which I was so bummed not to finish. After asking about where our food went, all we received in response was "sorry, didn't know you were still working on that". No gift card, no offer of another drink or food. Poor customer service. Needless to a say we were disappointed and will not be returning. read more

Everyone is super friendly. Sometimes too friendly since they'll end up chatting with the customer in front of you in line for ahile. But. That's a neighborhood coffee shop for you. And not just any neighborhood, Leucadia! Just part of the packaged deal y'all. So don't be in a rush. Slow down. Take it all in. Take advantage of the courtyard area out front and soak up the morning sun. They have live music on the weekends too. Anyone can play. Seriously. The signup sheet lives on the barista counter.
