Cocina Mariposa is literally all the rage. I'd heard conversation within the last couple years of a booming Mexican restaurant at the golf course, and when I finally got around to trying it, I was imPRESSED. It's an odd location for some, but as a golfer, what is better than California burritos after 18 holes? Not a damn thing. I live in Santa Rosa, which is where you'd think you'd find the best Mexican cuisine, but Cocina Mariposa's carne asada was far superior than anything in my local area. I truly feel it's the unassuming spots, the ones you wouldn't consider, that are the dankest. I will come here literally any time when I visit, because I know it's gunna be bangin'. My fiancé and I stopped here on our way home from visiting my mom in Eureka. Such a gem! The restaurant is on the golf course and shares a space with the shop. There are picnic tables outside where you can eat and enjoy a beautiful day. We decided to share a super burrito since we were going to be eating in the car. It was SO good. Being a California native now living in Colorado, I'm pretty picky about my burritos and this one lived up to my expectations. It tasted fresh and homemade. Unfortunately this isn't a reliable source for a vegan meal. Tried this place when it first opened & found the jackfruit to be too saucy, the execution not quite pulled together, the place cluttered and dusty. I love the concept of burritos at the golf course, was down to be chill and give time for kinks to work out before yelping. Here's the thing. Today I tried- for the 3rd time in six months- to get some grub from this place. I have failed each time (for different reasons). The phone number posted for this business is disconnected. This has meant needing to go in person to ask questions; no biggie. Once, after arriving in person,I learned they were closed for an unclear reason (when their posted hours said open). Chalked it up to COVID & set mind to try again sometime. Second time they were closed with a sign explaining a week or two of vacay. Ok, cool. Bummer to have gotten in a car to go to a place twice to no avail... but, hey, we live in Humboldt. This is how businesses operate around here. If you want to spend money to receive a service, you get used to this and just say "thank you". Today I had extra time so I stopped at 10a to get burritos. I figured on taking them with me on my errands (planning ahead for lunch for the crew a bit later on). They were open when I arrived. Hooray!!!! Did I leave with food? Well. Nope. They said couldn't make a vegan breakfast item. They weren't taking lunch orders until 11a. Despite the fact that I was in a car, would be in a different town in a hour, cared very little about what I actually *got* to eat (so long as it was vegan), it was my actual third attempt to eat this food, and their website didn't specify no lunch orders before 11a (that I could see). Unreliable Humboldt business. Grrrrrr. Sorry vegans. If it works out for you, hallelujah! Also, if you're vegan, you know reliable access to a meal matters a ton. This place ain't that. Ooooooh I'm glad I found this place! Let me name all of the things I love about it. It's a multi- generation family owned and operated business. It's located within a golf course so you get to sit outside at a concrete picnic table, watching the golfers on the green as you eat. Mari makes many different flavors of Agua Fresca using fresh fruit. There are many delicious vegetarian options and she uses locally sourced veggies. I've been talking about this place for sometime, but never had the pleasure until very recently. The Chili Relleno plate is amazing! Delicious sauce on there. It's connected to the golf store. It has pretty good food. It took long for our food to be ready but it was worth it. The asada fries are delicious. Was very disappointed in the food. Dry with no sauce or salsa. Food was not presented as represented in menu. No salsa and chips with meal or even asked if we wanted any! The utensils were plastic!!! Sorry but when i go in a restaurant with fairly high prices i do expect regular plates and silverware. Will not be going back. Wow. I was so impressed by Cocina Mariposa especially because it's fairly new to the area. However, it exceeded my expectations and more. I ordered the chilaquiles, which I should've taken a picture of. I got it with the hot salsa which was definitely spicy, but for a Hispanic that loves the heat, it was the perfect combination of spice and flavor. 100% recommend to those that like spicy food. My favorite part about this place was that everything was made fresh daily and made to order. Of course that means that it takes a little bit longer to get the food but it's so worth it. Especially because mamá is in the kitchen doing what she knows best. Like seriously, I was born and raised in San Francisco so I've seen great Mexican food. Really excellent food! Definitely the best Mexican food I've had in Humboldt County. I had the Baja fish tacos and they were hot, fresh and had so much flavor. I ordered them with a really delicious green salsa and found out that they have been buying the tomatillos from local farmers which I think is awesome. The best thing I ate was the free chips/ bean dip before our meal which was so good- the house-made tortilla chips are really thin and crispy. The woman who served us (who I think is the owner) was really sweet and welcoming and took time to give us recommendations. I also feel like things are priced pretty reasonable/ generous for the quality. Added bonus was the nice view of the golf course.
