As a vegetarian, being able to order tofu in my food was amazing but even more amazing than that the portions of the tofu in the burrito were stellar. The food is great, the atmosphere is cozy and funky, and the service is top-notch. A couple of favorites are the dirty hippie burrito, which is tofu with bacon, the rockfish burrito and the chipotle carnitas burrito. They'll make it as a bowl too if you're watching your carbs. New to the area and looking for a decent breakfast burrito. Chose Hey Juan since they offer Teff flour tortillas-something you won't find at any of the roach coaches. Ordered online and walked over 10min later. The order was ready upon arrival and I was met with the two smiling and courteous faces of the counter workers. I was looking for a specific beverage which they did not carry and kindly referred to the business next door. The food was warm & perfectly wrapped. It was not overladen with creamy sauces so the individual flavors were discernible and quite tasty. I ordered the addition of cilantro & crushed nachos which further enhanced the flavor. The original burrito place. This is a very decent burrito. Nothing fancy, fresh relatively clean kitchen. Their carne asada was fresh and well seasoned. Compared to the dozens of middling Mexican restaurants around every corner parking lot. Go here and support a local business. As a side, how do all of the dozens of Mexican restaurants stay in business. I'm no expert but seems really odd, cheap rent or something. Been to this place many times over the years because it was great. Unfortunately have noticed a serious decline in quality past few visits. Last time I asked them what was their leanest and most tender meat to add to my burrito they suggested the grilled chicken. The chicken was slightly undercooked/pink and there was pretty much a small bone fragment or gristle in every bite. I went today (for the last time) and mentioned to the manager about the chicken, she was adamant that there could not have been bones cuz they use "skinless boneless chicken". (I've cut up boneless chicken at home and yeah there are parts of that meat you have to cut out before cooking. And hey whatever happened to the customer is always right?) Besides if the chicken was so great why do you think I wasn't about to order it again? Today I thought I'd try the carnitas, again, (last time I ordered it, it was overcooked almost to point of being jerky like). Fortunately they were out of it so I asked about the only other meat option Carne asada. I asked if it was lean and tender, she assured me they cut ALL the fat off and it was VERY tender. Uhm, no it was the exact opposite. It was very fatty and like shoe leather. Had a good smoky BBQ flavor though if only it had been palatable. THE RICE. How was the rice you may ask? Well let's just say if they had cooked it for the usual 18 minutes instead of 9 minutes it might have been good. Basically almost raw rice. HYGIENE: One last thing and this is the main reason I will never eat there again. While i was waiting for my burrito to be made, I watched a prep chef walk from the back food prep area look around for a clean knife. When it wasn't in the spot he was looking at he pick up a dirty knife, dipped it for half a second into a basin filled with soapy water, then into another basin filled with what looked like more soapy water. Then he walked back to where he had been working and proceeded to take that knife and start chopping onions... did not wipe off that knife. :( Also witnessed the manager/order taker take big pots out of the sink area and drop them loudly and vigorously onto the FLOOR at her feet, supposedly to make room for other things she was trying to wash. (I guess she was gonna pick them up off the floor and wash them later? Off of the floor....) I watched her scrub two big pots, dip them into the soapy water basin, then into the other soapy water basin, and then put them on the rack to drain. Good to go and ready to use again i guess? Looking at that dingy grey bubbly water in the 2nd basin I just had to ask what that was. She said it was her chlorine rinse water. Oh ok nice to know. (In my house I rinse my dishes with clean water.) At this point i really should've asked for my money back and left but sadly I didnt. The burrito was just awful and my stomach is still churning from what little I ate of it. The rest of that poor burrito is now safely stowed away in a trash bin. Will never eat there again. read more

I'm a former Humboltd State student from the early '90's. I was introduced to this place in the Fall of '92. It was hyped as one of the best burrito places in Arcata at the time. My experience was very much the opposite. I litterally spit out my first bite with disgust. It was one of the worst burritos I ever had. The taste was somewhere between dog food, hippie sweat, mixed with patchouli oil. I never understood how they stayed in business serving the hippie inspired crap they churned out. I'm giving 5 stars for the change in ownwership that appears to have rectified the insult to taste buds and mexican food that was Hey Juan's. Thankful for the recent 5 star reviews that spoke of new management, which led us to give this spot a chance. I was particularly pleased by the uniqueness of their menu items like their multitude of burritos that have bacon in them (yes please). Their fish and bacon burrito sounded bomb, but sadly they informed me they ran out of fish so I settled for their Dirty Hippie burrito which has tofu and bacon (such a great combination). It was great! Loved the crunch that the bacon added. I love that they offer different sizes (small, medium, and large), which is perfect because normal sized burritos are usually overkill for me. And it allows me to save a few dollars as well. I ALSO love that they offer dairy-free sauce/cream in their burritos. We ordered at the door and our order was ready in 15 minutes. My husband got the In the Sauce burrito, which was basically like a super wet burrito in a cream sauce. The only downside to the experience was that they forgot to give us a fork and knife, which was pretty crucial for the wet burrito. read more

I've been eating there since the early 80s, and the founder, past owners, and employees have always cared about what they produced. But that no longer seems to be the case. The last two times we went there, we ordered two Super Deluxe veggie burritos. Tonight they were mostly rice. No sour cream. Very little, if any, cheese--we couldn't taste any. The guac was a little spoonful, way down at the bottom. My tofu was lumped on one side. To top it off, our final bill was a wopping $30 (plus a little-deserved tip) for marginally made burritos. After our first poor experience awhile back, we wanted to give them another chance because of how much we've enjoyed HJ in the past. But the second experience was the same as the first. read more
