Unbelievably perfect. Seriously. And not pretentious at all - just perfect drinks, perfect food, perfect service. I'd heard great things about Cobble Hill but we don't get out real often thanks to our two munchkins so we just hadn't made the rounds yet. Now I'm not sure we'll ever go anywhere else whenever we find ourselves an elusive date night.
Pre-Dinner Drinks: I had a Rhu-Barbie World (El Mayor blanco tequila, rhubarb syrup, vanilla bean, cardamom bitters) - I expected a bite from the tequila but I was shocked to find how SMOOTH this drink was - no harsh tequila flavor whatsoever! The rhubarb and vanilla bean garnish were so beautiful and tasty. Husband had a French Oak Old Fashioned (Old Forester bourbon, demerara syrup, orange blossom water, bitters) and we loved the presentation of this drink.
Amuse bouche was a smoky hummus with green strawberry, (something else?), and micro greens - it was the perfect little bite, a burst of interesting flavors to start our fantastic meal!
Appetizer: Chinese Five Spice Pork Belly - so perfectly well cooked and tender, not to mention flavorful and complex. Delicious! It has totally inspired my husband to try more Asian food (finally!).
Entrees: Husband had the Grilled Niman Ranch Flat Iron with red and white quinoa and asparagus. This could not have been better prepared. He ordered his steak medium-rare (much to the delight of our fantastic, knowledgable server) and it was cooked to perfection. This steak just melted in our mouths! The quinoa was great too and I was told I need to figure out to prepare that at home - ha! He ordered a glass of wine to pair with his dinner, but the name escapes me - all I know is it was recommended by our server to pair with his entree and he commented several times how perfect everything was together.
I had the Chorizo Stuffed Amish Chicken with masa dumplings, black bean purée, lime pickled radish, roasted spring onions, and cilantro. Sweet Jesus, those blue corn masa dumplings. And that chorizo stuffed chicken. I tried to get every component on my fork for each bite because it was just so perfect together. It was like an adventure in my mouth. Rick Bayless would love this dish, I have no doubt.
Dessert: We had the Strawberry and Rhubarb dessert with ricotta, rhubarb compote, Thai basil, and rhubarb gelato. Oh and these amazing little heavenly crouton-like cake pieces that soaked up the rhubarb compote. It was like the most amazing strawberry-rhubarb shortcake-ish dessert ever. SO GOOD! And so light too - it was perfect for us to split and we didn't feel like we over-indulged. We also had a Riondo split bottle of prosecco with dessert, which complemented the strawberry and rhubarb flavors so well.
When we received our check, we were given a sun-ripened strawberry fruit chew - it was like a grown up fruit snack that you'd never, ever want to share with your children. It was a perfect little bite to top off such a wonderful, special meal!
Before we left, I was already texting friends about how amazing everything was and that they need to come try this Spring menu ASAP. I highly, highly recommend Cobble Hill and I cannot wait to return! Next time, we plan to sit at the chef's table or out front in the beautiful, quaint patio you pass as you walk in.
Edit: Nina was our server. She was awesome!!! So attentive but definitely not annoying or overbearing. She was knowledgable about the menu, both for food and drinks, and was so helpful when we had trouble making decisions. In addition to being an all-around phenomenal waitress, Nina asked me right off the bat if we were on our way to a show after dinner, which we were. She expedited the ordering process and our food and drinks were promptly brought out to us. We enjoyed a slow enough pace, yet we got out of there with plenty of time to spare. I couldn't have asked for a better server! We will be requesting her again and again if she's available. read more
