I have visited The Clock in a long time because the quality was non existent. Today I walked in, was greeted promptly by a nice couple and was able to get my order in quickly. The food quality and volume increased tremendously. The serve staff is still a little all over the place but you get taken care of. The place has really been cleaned up lately and they have a lot of homemade things now but it still has lots of local yokels and great people watching. I really want to like The Clock - it's such a homey, old time diner type of place. My biggest issue with it is that the service is often slow and inattentive, and the prices are just too high for what it is. I ordered a patty melt and a side salad with a drink, it was nearly$20 when you include a 15% tip. They wouldn't let me substitute a side salad for the cole slaw, and a very small, simple side salad cost over $4! I will say that the patty melt was perfectly cooked and delicious. But I could have got just as good at Steak n Shake for less than $10. read more

This was my first time trying this restaurant and happy I finally stopped in. I was looking for that American diner/ Coney Island Midwest feeling and I'm so happy I found it. I tried the Cobb salad it was good my only wish is that it looked better then it tasted. The salad was great just think they need to work on plating. Rock solid breakfast. One of the better entire plates of breakfast I've had in Gainesville. Many places here either have rock star omelets but not good sides or amazing side and ok eggs. This place nails it with tasty food all the way across the board. The serving sizes are massive. They have your classic local service with lot of care and attention. This place seems to have some iffy reviews I usually don't write reviews but the two times I've come here (a month apart) the service has been great, they are super nice and polite. (I have not come during rush hours) The food is honestly really good, like I've been to this brand new, all modern looking restaurant in the keys and their food sucked! If you're going early in the morning, wait for the shift change at 6 a.m. It makes a world of difference. The overnight staff is just kinda there killing time -- they know there's really nowhere else you can go and it shows in the indifferent, almost non-existent service and disgusting greasy food. But it's like a completely different restaurant after 6 a.m. The staff is extremely friendly, happy and helpful and they bring in a cook who gives half a damn. Walked in, got greeted and seated pretty quickly. Sat down and immediately ordered. Took about 25-30 minutes for food to come out - ouch. Ordered the Paul Bunyan. Eggs and sausages were OK. Hashbrowns looked like they were scrapped off another customer's plate. Top that off they were cold and limp. Biscuits and gravy came with the meal. Burnt on the bottom, gravy cold and salty. Didn't touch those two. As for service, they had about five waitress and about the same number of tables. Never once did she come to check on us. The Clock was at one time a great family place to gather for great food but counting the last 3 visits, the meal food has been cold i.e. veggies, mashed potato's etc. The waitress' are rowdy and unprofessional. We were seated and asked what our drink was going to be. Then the same waitress came back later with the wrong drinks and was confused as to whether we had ordered or not.(about 10 min wait) I asked if instead of all the lettuce tomato etc. dressings for my burger could I just have a spoonful of coleslaw and they seemed to think that, that was crazy. Had to go ask someone else. The water taste terrible and then I paid cash with a $50.00 bill and 2 different folks had to look at it before they cashed it. Having eaten at the Clock 3-4 times now (usually late at night when nothing else except Perkins is open), I've discovered that the night cooks don't cook breakfast very well, but if you go during normal breakfast hours the food is pretty good. They stick to the basics (eggs, bacon/sausage, pancakes) and don't even pretend to offer anything healthy. Service is generally warm and friendly, but can be slow. I've never ordered anything but breakfast here and probably never will. It's just that kind of place. read more

My last visit 9/19/18 was not nearly so good. It was the lunch rush when you're supposed to have enough servers to cover, but it seemed like the 3-4 on duty were constantly behind. They pass on the stress level to the customers. My meal w/soup was served hot and tasty, so I don't think the cooks were the problem. My ticket was dropped off too early as I wanted to add a chocolate milkshake to go. I told her about how thin my last one was, and I wanted this one on the thick side. Extremely slow service. They failed to mention we would be sitting for over 45mins after ordering and still had 2 tickets ahead of us. When we asked how much longer it might be and said how nice it would have to be told of the insane wait, the hostess or manager was extremely rude. We asked how much we owed for our tea and to cancel our order,then she would not move out of my way so we could leave. It was like she was trying to force us to stay. 1:30 AM on new years eve and hungry, not drunk in the slightest so completely bright eyed and sequined tailed. there were only 3 of us in total. I expected the place to be completely packed with a huge wait. It was busy, but not anything like I thought. there were 2 groups in front of us, one with 2 people the other with 4. No one greeted us, there is no system of waiting, its show up and hope that everyone waiting is honest and doesnt jump in line. We waited about 20 minutes and then was seated. A waitress, not ours, took our drink orders and promised us our waitress would be dropping by soon. I was in the mood for breakfast, and then changed my mind. We deliberately ordered simple so maybe our food would come out quicker. I ordered the "big grilled cheese on thick cut bread with onion rings" $5.39 and my boyfriend got just a basket of onion rings $3.69. My friend wanted the chicken tenders appetizer but they were out of them (also out of steaks, and baked potatoes) so she got the chicken philly instead $7.59. this was at 2 am. it took one hour for our food to come out. My "grilled cheese" was on thick cut bread and the cheese wasnt melted at all, as if they toasted the bread and slapped the cheese on it, i dont believe it ever touched a "grill". The onion rings were dark and a little over fried, The chicken philly with fries looked okay, the cheese wasnt as melted as it should have been. My food was seriously lacking , even for a grilled cheese. A friend did join us at around 2:30 and ordered a Bacon cheeseburger with onion rings $7.59. Our food came at 3. His came at 3:30...without the bacon on it, but we were too scared to say anything for fear of being stuck there again till the next year. I understand it being late,and the place being somewhat busy, but most people were ordering pancakes, and eggs, and our orders were super simple and straightforward. The prices are outrageous for what they give you, especially when they make you wait a crazy amount of time, and then its not even cooked! This was our third attempt at receiving food in exchange for money in a five block radius/half hour, and I don't think I would have considered it long after walking in if I weren't starving. Tiny, shitty, fast food level burgers and sandwiches, freezer section fries, watery coleslaw, and most plates were $8.50-$11.50, which really is not cheap for the combined quality & quantity. Gross out factor: We all got waters. They all had ice. None of them had lemon or tasted like lemon, but mine had a lemon seed in the bottom. Ew. Waited 10 minutes before the waitress took our order - she said she was stuck on the register. At 1:45 I asked how much longer, she said it was coming up. Blamed the delay only having one cook. Advised we needed the order and a cup of water to go. Waitress said no charge but to wait a minute the manager wanted to talk to me. Manager took $7 off....make up your mind already! My wife of 49 years were here in Gainesville as students from 1968-72. We were on a very tight budget as students, especially with two children. When we splurged we went to the Clock. It wasn't often, but it was good. We have been back in Gainesville 15 years and we still go to the Clock. It can be considered like a diner was in New York City when I was a kid. You wouldn't have your wedding reception there, but a quick meal with good friends it is still a great place to go. The food is good. The atmosphere is plain, the waitresses are young and the service is good too. Open 7 days nothing fancy, just good food and good friends. read more

Went for breakfast and it was ok. Horrible service, slow, slow , slow. There was only 3 people in there and it still took 20 minutes to get eggs, home fries, and toast.
