Been coming here for decades. New menu missing all the best dishes. When the Vindaloo is back I'll be back... until then, nice knowing you Clay Pit! Thanks for all the great lunches! read more

When it comes to Indian food I'm a sucker for greatness and Clay Pit delivers every time with every dish. I normally don't rate till I have been to a place several times and had several dishes. Clay Pit still has me interest and I will keep coming back for more. read more

The Clay Pit restaurant looks beautiful and is a wonderful space - two-levels, with a modern contemporary style. When you enter, there is a bar area to the right, leather couch lounge waiting area in front of you, the host podium, and then to the left a larger dining area. I noticed stairs leading up to the second floor, too. My husband and I were caught off guard because it's advertised as casual dining, but it appeared in décor a little more than that. However, as soon as we spotted the number of families with young children, we saw it allowed for casual dining. There were a lot of kids there the night we went out to dinner; Clay Pit is super family friendly. Families, couples, and groups with children in tow were who we saw at Clay Pit. So, beautiful restaurant, yes. The food must be fantastic, right? My expectations were high, so it was disappointing that the food didn't live up to what I hoped. Perhaps it was because we didn't order a meat dish, but it's Indian so usually the vegetarian dishes meet (if not exceed) the taste and quality of meat dishes. The flavors were fine, but nothing stood out really except for the Madras Soup. The flavoring of the soup was something I never tasted before, so that held my attention. Also, the Onion & Cilantro Naan that I was looking forward to trying was just OK. I had wished I just ordered Garlic Naan, but didn't want to spend more money on another side of naan. Menu items are pricier than other places in the city; you're paying for the dining experience more than the food. Note: THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR DINNER. Sometimes lunch is a restaurant's strength, and apparently, they offer a lunch buffet, but I can't speak to this or factor this into my rating. Three Yelp Stars. read more

All I have to say it woah that was an AMAZING meal!!! They didn't have any Indian servers so I was a little reluctant as to how good the food would be but it was absolutely delicious. We had ordered a few things -mango lassi was yummy and super sweet -veggie samosas were so crispy and big -jalapeño and cream cheese naan was the best I've ever Had in my life -chicken tikka masala ordered hot and next time I'll get the spiciest because it wasn't that overbearing -the mixed grill was a MUST literally tHe most delicious meat ever on that hot plate -bachata was interesting it was like a seasoned potato? - the rice was yuuuuuummy I'll definitely be back this place was delicious. read more

Loveeee visiting this restaurant any time I'm in the area! The food is delicious and they have a great atmosphere and fantastic service. 10/10 recommend! read more

Great food. Service was excellent. A little bummer that they put Egg in or on their Naan. We took our son for his birthday and Indian food is his fave so we though this would be super fun. And typically Naan doesn't have egg. But apparently clay pits' does. That was a definite bummer. read more

The very best Indian food on the planet. They have Excellent service and very comfortable seating. They also have a bar that is excellent.

The service was great. The atmosphere was nice and the food was good and was flavorful. It is a nice place to go for Indian cuisine.

First time customer. Won't be back. I was in a party of eight. When we arrived, they claimed they didn't get our reservation. They said they were expecting another party of eight, and if they didn't show up, we could be seated. This was Sunday at 400 pm. There was no one in the place. Like it was impossible for them to push two tables together and seat us like any other restaurant would do. So we went to the bar area instead. My order consisted of the smallest Mexican Martini I have ever been served for any amount of money (this one was $12) and a small plate of calamari. The calamari was tiny and extremely greasy. Although it was a small plate, I couldn't finish it because it just wasn't any good. I came home and ate some bread, hoping to soak up some of the grease in my stomach. Nobody in my party even commented on their food, in an effort to be polite company. When we left a couple of hours later, there were still very few people in the place. Small wonder. read more

I was finally able to go here, being told that it's the best Indian in town. Not alot of my friends like Indian so I haven't been able to go. But finally here. Parking can be tough but it's free after 6PM, on a Saturday. I love the atmosphere, with the white brick walls and the entrance where you wait is spacious with luxurious sofas to sit and wait, or go to the bar tables in the bar area to sip on wine until they call you over. My only thing is that when i was in the bathroom, i thought it to be messy as trash was everywhere; i expected more from a restaurant like this. The food we tried was yummy. I always get naan and so to be different we tried onion naan, which was good and went well with the curried mussels. I wanted to drink the sauce! Instead, i dipped my naan generously into the sauce. My go to is lamb vindaloo and it was solid. I like it a little saucier but still quite flavorful. My dinner partner got curried shrimp in a coconut curry which had a sweeter finish. So we both got spicy hot and i thought it was mildly spicy. I also thought our server was a little curt and I hate it when servers approach your table and set another table's dirty dishes down on the table you're sitting at. Please put them away before coming over. I'd rather you do that and come over and say sorry for the wait. read more

What a gem of a restaurant! Food is delish! Very nice ambiance. Logan was my Server, attentive warm and so cute. Check out Clay Pit when in Austin! read more

Best Indian food I have found around the UT Austin area. A little pricey but you get a good amount! If you eat in person the ambiance is good for a date. I highly recommend their drink the Chakra. I love it's kick but sweetness at the same time. Their Nan's a little doughy than crispy, and they put cilantro on their Nan. Their mussels from their appetizer menu is also something I really recommend, and have some Nan ready to dip in the sauce. read more

Came here around 5:30 on a Wednesday night. There were a lot of people waiting but I assume it was because they were waiting for people in their party. We had a party of 2 and were seated immediately. The restaurant is quite large and has a decent amount of seating (which would be good for larger groups). I ordered the vegetable korma and we also got the garlic and rosemary naan to share. The food was pretty good. The curry was creamy and tasted slightly sweet (I got mild spicy). It paired well with the rice. My only complaint is I wish there were more vegetables. The naan was okay. I'm not a huge fan of garlic and it had some chunks if garlic on it. The service was good. The waiter was very good about coming around to check on us all the time to make sure everything tasted good. We got our food in a pretty timely manner. Overall I would definitely come back again, especially since it's probably the best Indian food within walking distance of campus. The staff are courteous and I enjoyed the food. read more

Honestly I didn't like the food. Service was good Dessert was horrible. I ordered kheer which was actually a chef's special but that was horrible. Very pricy-very small quantity read more

Clay Pit exceeded my expectations! Indian food is one of my favorite cuisines, and though I've heard this place is not very authentic, every dish was so tasty and well cooked. For appetizers, I tried the samosas which was fried perfectly and had just the right balance of flavors. The plating was beautiful and even the chickpeas were seasoned so well. We also tried the calamari which was a crowd pleaser and very crispy on the outside. For the main entree, I ordered the chicken Tikka Masala with garlic naan bread. The Tikka Masala is popular here, and you can select your desired spice level. I chose hot, but it really wasn't too spicy in my opinion. The naan bread was so warm and buttery, with fresh pieces of garlic on top - seriously one of the best naan breads I've had, and if I came here again, I would order extra servings of it. Lastly, I also had the mango lassi which was a bit more yogurty than mango tasting, but nonetheless amazing! I had such a fun time here! The inside of the building is so nicely decorated with stone walls and unique door designs, almost making you feel like you're in a fantasy-like place. It's definitely a great place to come with a large group or even for a more intimate dinner setting! read more

We have a monthly dinner with friends and wanted to try the Clay Pit. We were not disappointed, the Food was great, our server took good care of us. There were several of us who have never experienced Indian cuisine and the waiter assisted us making choices, along with some veteran "foodies" that were with us. Plus the infused vodka drinks were refreshing. We will be back. All 11 of us loved it read more

Claypit's a fun place to eat with friends and super close to campus. I came here with Jon and we ended up ordering quite a few dishes. I'd say their serving size is quite generous but reasonable for the price ($$). The restaurant is decorated very antique like, with the wooden and stone walls and floors and vintage decor. It was very busy at the time we came, and had almost the full floor decked out. I love the samosas, they were very crunchy on the outside but had delicate layers on the inside. The naan bread with the chicken was quite good as well. Jon got the curry and it was a bit too salty for me, but overall all the food was pretty good. The atmosphere is very bustling as well. If ever craving Indian food, I would come here again. read more

Clay Pit is my hero!!! They saved my brothers birthday dinner when a near by place messed up our reservation. The customer service here is OUTSTANDING!!! Miles and Ryan went above and beyond and I will be forever grateful! Those two young men have earned my life long loyalty to this wonderful establishment! Went to lunch with my daughter and and friends at this wonderful restaurant. There is a small pay lot for parking adjacent to it so no hunting for street parking downtown. The food was really tasty and the garlic naan was soo good. We all had different dishes that we loved and tried a mango yogurt drink that I can't remember the name of but i really liked it. We will definitely revisit this place. read more

We usually go to weekend buffet to this place, I usually avoid buffets as it causes bloated tummy for me, but very few restaurants are exceptional and this is one among them. Food is fresh, not too much heavy cream in Curry's, love the mango lassi, but they serve only North Indian food, so if you are looking both South Indian and North Indian, this is not the place, service is good too. read more

Service was slow and bad --- and the constant excuse was that a wedding in their banquet hall upstairs had overwhelmed them. They ran out of "chai"... which Indian restaurant runs out of chai? My companion asked for 'salt' three times and it never came. The cucumber salad was nothing interesting - also so sweet... :( The food was good enough to satisfy my Indian food craving, but nothing spectacular. Decor is nice! read more

The service was amazing. We ordered virgin drinks, but they just tasted like frooti. The jalapeño and cream cheese naan was really nice. The mirch masala with the veggies was ok they cut the veggies way too big, but the curry was really nice. I would recommend getting it with paneer. Overall it was a great dinner with the girls! read more

5/18/19 We stopped by after a little day drinking, to get some light bites and drinks. We sat at the bar area, the restaurant seemed crowded around 5 PM. Parking (2/5): Its in downtown and had limited parking, very close to UT campus, but we ubered there. Most likely you have to street parking. Seating (5/5): We walked in and all bar seating was open, and we just sat down. Wait Staff (2/5): They came for the original drink/food order, then no service after that. We didn't sit at the actual bar, they were tall tables next to the bar. Drinks (4/5): We ordered some IPA's, they have very limited beer selection, but the drinks were great. Food (4/5): We ordered all appetizers, all the food was really good. Group had ordered the Madras Soup, Bhel Puri, Chicken Tandoori Tukde, Chicken Samosas. I had the Bhel Puri, which I loved and was a perfect snack. I was told the soup and the samosas were really good. Our only complaint was the Tandoori Tukde, which was not moist and very dry. Check (2/5): Again, no one approached us, so we decided against the second round of drinks, we approached the bar and got our check. The service was horrendous. Group of 5 with a few drinks and apps with tip was about $50. Note: I changed the food, after my friends that came with me read the review and complained about the Tandoori Tukde. read more

A ok place to go for so called Indian food. Its close to my work, so sometimes when I have craving for Indian food I go to this place. The food is not authentic Indian food. Its Americanized, lacks the basic flavors of Indian cuisine and is bland. Sometimes I just wonder are these really Indian dishes!! 1) Buffet: their buffet is very small compared to the other Indian places. Talking about main dishes they just have 2 soups, 2 veggie options,rice,1non-veg curry,1 chicken tikka(usually) and naan served on table(which is usually cold)- at least for me and the condiments. 2) Service - I would give 4 starts to their service. The place is always neat and clean. Hostess is friendly and accommodating. But the waiters are not so attentive, always have to call someone, plates are not picked up frequently. I have always gone during lunch hours which is very busy and packed. You have to wait for at least 10-20 mins. I usually walk, but the designated parking spots are limited and parking on the roads around could be challenging. read more

Caught in the January 2023 ice storm, we walked from our hotel to the Clay Pit. BTW Austin, in general, reminds me of the gogo growth years of Atlanta 20 years ago, however, with much less diversity. Started with a cocktail and appetizers Crispy cauliflower with curried hummus and tandoor marinated grilled broccoli with tikka Marsala. All were very yummy. I had the Jerry Saag and hubby had the Biryani. Staff was gracious and we loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. This was really good Indian food and once again Yelp was a good guide. read more

I can't say enough good tho far about this place. Just moved to Austin, this place is a keeper. So far have had the garlic naan, spicy Mirchi naan, roti, samosas, cauliflower with humus, Brussels sprouts, butter chicken, the chicken naryal, portobello mattar paneer, trying to think what else. The flavors, OMG. Loved the naan with the cauliflower and humid. The portobello was really great, meaty with the sauce awesome. The Brussels sprouts, crispy, yummy. We love the naan, great with everything. Service always very friendly, and was helpful with a few of the newer dishes like the portobello. We love the place. read more

I'll start here, while wildly over priced, it's decent Indian food However, with that said, they are woefully ill equipped to be open during the pandemic. Diners are closely packed in and those of us choose not to contribute to the pandemic are subject to waiting long past our pick up times while the staff fumbles to get your order 20 minutes late. The place is basically a revolving super spreader event that happens to serve food. read more

I went there with the expectation of trying Indian fusion and they delivered. They curate your food based on your spice level, they have a rotating menu of "specials". We tried the mango bhel and dahi puri. Dahi puri hands down was the highlight of the entire night. We also tried the Achari paneer and asked for medium spice and they delivered! It was the right amount of tang and heat all coming together in that one unctuous bite. My friends ordered the chicken biryani which was also really really good. It was boneless chicken and they seemed to appreciate the ease of eating it. Mango lassi was alright ( it was more tart than I wanted it to be). Their cocktail menu is brought to life in the fun "peacock" glasses. read more

We were seated in the cellar which was pretty cool. The waiter recommended the mussels appetizer which was so hard to stop eating. We ordered the three cheese naan which was so soft and delicious and a great complement to the mussels sauce. The lamb joganosh was lacking a lot of flavor - maybe more salt? The paneer korma was very good and was on the sweeter side. We had this with the garlic naan which was good but not as good as the three cheese one. read more
