Staff was nice. That's pretty much the 3 stars. Roll, dry. Collards, lacking in flavor & strangely sweet. Mac & chz also sweet & a gloopy mess. Sweet potato fries had a weird flavor & were over done. Having grown in in Memphis, TN, my BBQ experiences are pretty deep. CJ's is pretty bad. First, the pork ribs - dry dry dry - so they cover ion BBQ sauce. The Tri-tip, like shoe leather - covered in BBQ sauce. The beef ribs were pretty good I have to admit. The chicken was done on the outside but sort of raw in the middle. They cook theoi food too fast at too high heat. The beans were great and the slow was also really good. Price was good - lots of food for a reasonable price. This place would be good for take out if you were drinking a lot or for a pot luck where you did not know people very well. Buyer Beware! read more

Tried this place today based on fellow Yelper's reviews - thanks for that! EAT HERE, PEOPLE!!! I bought a full tri-tip sandwich and a side of sweet potato fries to share with the hubs. The tri-tip sandwich had tri-tip and BBQ sauce and NOTHING else, cause NOTHING else belongs on a bbq tri-tip sandwich. The beef was cube-cut, pink and tender; in other words, it was delicious. The order of cross-cut fries was large, crispy and tasty. No dipping sauce to mess with the flavor of the seasoning - we ate the sweet tater fries right out of the bag. They have a large menu, so I'm afraid I'll have to come back (several times) to check out some of the other offerings. Fast take-away service - a wee bit hard to find (they are on the northeast corner) at Victoria and Fifth, in the Storage company complex. We ordered the family takeout $45 deal. Got ribs, chicken and tri tip. All the meats had the same sauce, would have been nice if they switched it up a bit. But the they were well cooked and tasted good. I wish this meal came with 2 side dishes so I could have tried 2 things but it came with one so we got the cole slaw, that was average and the rolls were average. Overall it was good as bbq goes. There was enough meat left over for a light lunch the next day so the portions on the meat were good! read more

I'm from Tennessee and if there's one thing I love, it's BBQ. I've been living in California for three years and it wasn't until this past weekend I finally found a good BBQ joint. When you pull up, it may appear as just some hole in the wall, but then you get out of your car and smell the smoker in the parking lot. When I walked inside I felt like I stepped through a portal to Memphis. Great Blues music fills that atmosphere, as does the aroma of great BBQ. While it may seem silly, the fact that they have hush puppies and sweet tea really sets this place apart from most places that call themselves real BBQ restaurants out here. I live two hours away, up in Pismo Beach, and I will now be making the drive down to CJ's BBQ at least once a month. CJ's is BBQ heaven. From the sweet smokey ribs to the hot link sandwich ~ delicious sides including greens and mac & cheese. I also love their sweet potato pie for dessert. The atmosphere is casual and the prices reasonable. This is the real thing. read more

Wow!!! My brother and I ordered mozzerella sticks, sweet potato fries, tri-tip, CJ's Super Special Burger, and The Shrimp Po Boy with the Peach Cobbler. Everything was amazing! The Tri-Tip is so tender with just the right amount of smoke. The burger is HUGE!!! So delicious! The peach cobbler was so cinnamony and I could not stop eating it. We also ordered a New Castle, served on tap in a huge glass. The prices are perfect! The beers on tap are only $5.50! I will be back! The service and food is AMAZING! read more

Disappointing is best word to describe this place. The bbq chicken was super dry. The dark meat was ok. The tri-tip was underwhelming. And they use canned corn. I hoped for a better effort on the side dishes. My daughter liked her homemade chips but then wondered why they are serving canned corn. read more

It's sooo hard to find a place in this area that uses 'real' Southern-style BBQ sauce. It's usually a vinegar-based, watery chili powder misery, but not at CJ's. The tri tip is always tender and flavorful and the spare ribs are almost always perfect. Once in a while, they're not as 'fall off the bone' as I'd like them to be but the flavor makes up for it. The Mac & Cheese is good, but I like mine with a cheese 'sauce' rather than just lumps of gooey cheese, but I'll still gobble it up. Their peach cobbler is excellent, too! read more

Love this place! The staff is friendly. I always order the Philly cheese steak with BBQ beans. So yummy! I also had a lunch meeting and made a list of what everyone wanted and dropping it off the night before the meeting. They had everything ready by the time I can in. I usually get their tri tip sandwhich with sweet potato fries. One word : Amazeeeballls. One day, my coworker mentioned that he tried CJ's BBQ for the first time and "ohh my gah" he loved it. So, he asked if I wanted to get lunch to go, since I'm stuck in an office all day, I said, "sure, why not". I thought I'd be a little daring and order something different. I got the sourdough melt. The only way I can describe it - if you've had the sourdough jack from jack in the box, it's exactly like that with bacon. Eh, I wasn't too impressed, since it tasted like oil or whatever they used to make it. It made me full the whole day. I was so uncomfortable, but it's not CJ's fault that my digestive system sucks. Anyways, I thought I'd try another different sandwich this time, and I got the chicken sourdough melt with avocado, no mushrooms. Again, I wasn't a big fan. So, lesson learned - if you eat at a BBQ spot, eat their BBQ - since they are known for that. They employees were more interested in counting their tips than helping their customers. 3 of them were just standing by the counter discussing the distribution of their tips. The service was fine, but the food was just not very good. The cole slaw lacked anything that resembled flavor. The tri-tip sandwich was small for the price and the BBQ sauce tasted like every other BBQ sauce that you can buy at Vons. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything special. Honestly, I wanted to like this place, but I just didn't. It was just OK. I did like that they had fish on the menu for people that want to eat healthy (I didn't so I went for the tri-tip sandwich).
