My husband and I visited this store earlier today. We ended up finding everything we needed AND experienced excellent customer service. We needed a part for our toilet assembly. An employee came to assist us, asked what problem we were experiencing, and suggested the part to replace. (When we got home and replaced it, it worked great!). Then we found a small bookcase we weren't looking for but loved. An employee (might have been a manager as she wasn't wearing a uniform, just a name tag) came and assisted us by getting a cart, escorting is to the check out, and then assisting the cashier with the ring up (from the little yellow item info card). The store was clean and well stocked, all the employees pleasant and knowledgeable, and the experience was calm and enjoyable. I would recommend this store for anyone who needs home goods; also it is a local Hawaii business so you are supporting local. Thank you, City Mill! read more

Warning to all ... Outdoor patio heavy duty Metal Folding chair almost cut my husbands finger tip off ! It collapsed and crushed bones in his finger ER and 9 stitches later if it were a child it would have been worse ! My husband is only 130lbs and chair was only 4 1/2 yrs old . Sold at City Mill but now I do not see those chairs so just a WARNING TO ALL PARENTS read more

Service so far has always been good at this location and everyone we've encountered were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I like that you can find things you need to replace for older houses. We needed to replace jalousies and at first went to Home Depot and showed them the measurements we needed. They looked at what was written down and chuckled; saying it's for an old house and "go City Mill" Mind you we were looking through the jalousies for a good 10 minutes and those 2 guys never asked if we needed help but were busy talking story but that's a whole new review for that store lol Anyway back to what I was saying...We went to City Mill and were greeted by a very pleasant man. He asked if we needed help finding anything. He directed us to the jalousies and said he would also call for someone to meet us. As soon as we got there someone was peeking out of the aisle. We handed him the written notes of what we needed and he said no problem and that he could cut it to the specific sizes. Cool! He didn't it so fast to and had them bundled nicely. We need a few more things and he asked another worker to take us to what we needed since he had others waiting for him. The worker that walked us to the next aisle smiled the entire time (even though he was already off the clock). We apologized and thanked him for going out of his way. He was very humble and gave us excellent service also. Now on the flip side: We were talking among ourselves and a female worker chimed in out of nowhere; it kind of felt like she was scolding us for using a certain product to unclog a drain. Don't get me wrong, we're all for suggestions but there could've been a better approach lol read more

I have so many mixed feelings about City Mill that I need to express it in plus and minus form: PLUS (+): On one hand, I've experienced the most AMAZING SERVICE that's 5-stars across the board. I once had a big guy help me find a fire extinguisher and when he continually kept checking on me during my shopping trip. The nicest man I've had the pleasure of meeting in a retail store and you could feel that helping the customer was his main purpose for the day. MINUS (-): And on the flip side I've gotten the very worst service experience where I just wanted to return that same fire extinguisher (which was less than $25) and I argued with the cashier about giving me store credit. The debit card which I had originally used to purchase the item had just expired and she wasn't allowed to give me cash. I told her bluntly: "I just want my money back. I don't know the next time I'll come back here and I know that store credit will just go to waste." She had to get the approval of two different employees and I finally got my money back. PLUS (+): You can get your propane filled easily here. There's a small office on the outside and they do it in 5-10 minutes. MINUS (-): There is a much smaller selection of products when compared to the big box competitors down the street. PLUS (+): As Angela R has mentioned, their "ORGANIZATION SECTION ROCKS!" If you are like me and love to compartmentalize and organize everything in your life, you will LOVE the front of the store! PLUS (+): Sometimes less is more in that it doesn't take you three thousand years to find a part for something. PLUS (+): It's never too busy here so it's pretty easy to park and get in and out. PLUS (+): You're shopping local. PLUS (+): You're shopping local and that's worth mentioning twice. read more

Oh City Mill! I remember going to City Mill with my dad as a little girl. I remember my dad buying wood, nails, tools and even Christmas trees from City Mill. It was where he would go to buy what he needed to build things, fix our home or get materials for my projects. It was here before Home Depot or Lowe's showed up on the island. Nowadays, I go here with my husband when he has to buy bits or other tools for work. City Mill has the best customer service. The parking is a breeze and the workers are always friendly. When my husband has a question or needs help finding things there's always a worker that is ready to help. The store isn't as big as their big wig competitors but if they don't have something in store they try to order it for you. Also the store is well kept and clean. read more

With so many national retailers entering our local retail scene, it becomes harder and harder to shop local. After all, it's hard to beat their low prices and the bright lights which illuminate the bathroom you really want and dream of having. At the end of the day though, we're still stuck with the vinyl flooring and the dirty tub. So when the need for that toilet flush valve kit or a new light fixture arises, City Mill is there with all of the staples you need and then some. The selection might not be the greatest, and the prices a tad higher, but they will have the things you need to keep your home running because they are a local business and know what the locals need. Is its Nimitz store as shiny as the newer Home Depot and Lowes stores nearby? No...the lights are a tad dimmer and the ceilings a little lower. However their service is quite good and the crowds much more manageable so you don't look too embarrassed when you ask where to find the drill bit set you need to finish installing the shelves you've been meaning to put up. So even though it isn't as shiny as the other stores nearby and the prices are a bit higher, it's dependable and it work's. Just like that bathroom you've been wanting to convert into a hotel style spa experience. read more

What better way to support your local hardware store? Everything that I "seem to need" tends to be here for such a decent price. Lol I say it like that because I feel like I need everything here even though I only really need one thing..lol I came here about a week ago to scope out fans because my number one fan broke on me after being on my wall for 6+ years. My faddah told me that they purchased my fan at city mill years ago which is why I ventured out here..with a new review. Anyways, they didn't have the fan that I wanted but I over heard an employee and a fan customer talk about different options.. i stood there on the side pretending to call my mom about how much mine used to cost but in reality I didnt want to bother another employee and I just wanted to eavesdrop since i was probably gonna get the same help anyway. From what I heard, the employee told the other fan customer that they were better off buying a 30 dollar fan thats strong enough to circulate the room. In my head i was sold because it really was a good deal and the employee actually gave a demo..props to that employee btw. I didn't buy the fan yet because I wanted to check out the other hardware stores. Instead of buying the fan at City Mill I ended up buying gardening stuff cause I "felt like it". I now have bok choy, chinese parsley , and annuals sprouting in my mini garden. I visited Lowes, which also had good fans but they were too big for my room and we're a bit pricy..soo I'm going back to City Mill to get my new #1 fan! Parking: Ample. One way in, one way out. Customer service: Very Helpful. So nice, especially the gardening section! Pro-tip: they duplicate keys here read more

I VERY RARELY review non-food related stuff, but I was really pleased with my last few trips to City Mill. I never really priced checked between Home Depot, Lowe's & City Mill for the things I want. So I couldn't tell you if they were more expensive or not. I have read (here) they cost a bit more, but I would spend the extra bucks for the ease and great customer service they provide! Parking is never a problem for me. I can always find staff available, and I don't have to chase after them down the aisle before they pull some David Blaine shit and then vanish. I have always received wonder customer service. (see stories below if need be) I can shop without large crowds (that is a big plus for me) I have never waited in some crazy line. I have returned items with ease (granted I follow their directions of course) I know my skills, and finding manly-man stuff is not one of them, so I go straight for help. Sometimes helps comes straight to me. I think it's the I'm-a-skinny-twig-armed-girl look that gets me help. I have the same look as a guy in a porn shop trying to find a toy for his girlfriend. Confusion. Uneasiness, and asking himself, "What exactly does this do?" Visit 1 = I was greeted upon entrance, and when I asked for "The Key Guy" the man knew what that meant, and actually walked me over to the area (which is near the exit doors) The area that makes duplicate keys. Visit 2= Went to get a curtain rod, hooks and a deadbolt. Charlie (I think his name was) help me with all my questions. It was like I had my own personally Mr. Fix It. He took me to every location and gave me his thoughts and reasons behinds what to look for, so when I returned (when I really needed to get it) I would know what to get. Visit 3= I was looking for a "handle thing" and asked the register lady...who didn't seem to know the answer (as if "some sort of handle thing" was a sufficient discription for my item...sorry) She did however ask a man in regular wear; button down shirt & slackes, who was on his way out with drumstick (the dessert not the instument stick). Turns out he work there; he ask the cashier to hold his bag & drumstick and took me to what he thought I was talking about. A DOOR HANDLE! (yes, a door handle....*sigh*) Thank you sir, for putting your ice cream second to my lack of knowledge in a world so unfamilar to me. read more

4 stars cuz the customer service we got today was like no other city mill. Less 1 star cuz the products we were looking at were too pricey. We went to City Mill Nimitz after our shocking LAME event at Crazy Mike's (see other review) in hopes to find a dining set. We didn't find exactly what we wanted but we had GREAT customer service by Caleb the Assistant Manager. This is the first time I've ever had a City Mill employee come up to me and ask me if I needed help. The usual scenerio is that when I actually do need help, there's no red shirted City Mill employee to be found. If and when I do find one, they usually point me in the direction of another City Mill employee. This was not what happened today. There's a reason why Caleb is the Assistant Manager. He was very helpful and knowledgable about the City Mill furniture. Anyway, I just thought y'all should know. *cheers* read more

Last week I gave one star to City Mill. It was well deserved. I directly asked a sales associate for help and he said, "da plants are ova dea!" Well I certainly know where they are but I specifically asked him for help finding a certain plant and he walked away. WALKED AWAY!!! Well this week I fared better. Swearing I'd not go back again and having bought $45.00 worth of plants at Lowes I did head back to City Mill for citronella mosquito punks that Lowes was out of. While looking in the garden section for it a very nice, soft spoken young man named Courtney came beside me and said, "May I help you with what you're looking for?" When I asked him about the citronella punks, this polite young man said softly, "I know right where they are and follow me, I'll take you right to them ." We both searched thoroughly and could not find the Citronella punks, the only ones which smell that I can tolerate. Courtney excused himself and after less than a minute came back and said there were about 20 boxes on order. He also offered to call the nearest City Mill to see if they had inventory. I told him no because I wasn't willing to drive out that far out of my way. Courtney showed me a couple of products similar to what I wanted and I bought a few of them. He was patient and informative. It hit me then that this was the same good man who cut some screen for me about a year ago. I was impressed then with his impeccable manners and accuracy and thought I should have written about him then. Why hadn't I? Because I'm an insensitive pig. Why am I writing about him now? Because I'm trying not to be an insensitive pig and because quality customer care matters. You hear that, City Mill? I matter. This young man represented you twice in the finest most courteous manner possible. He wasn't pushy. He was diligent and soft spoken. He HELPED ME! Yes , with Lowes and Home Depot breathing down your necks, this young store associate made me want to return to you. And ONLY him. Because both you and Lowes didn't have the same product. But because of Courtney I will be back to City Mill first to search for this product next week. I'll call first but ask me if I'd like to be helped by Courtney again, why the answer is a simple, yes. Good manners and willingness to help seems to be a lost art as evidenced by your lazy sales associate last week. But if it were in my power to grant this man a raise or even suggest a promotion or even just to publically thank him, it was worth this text. Now my thumbs are sore but it's ok. I do apologize if I missed seeing his name tag because I don't know if I spelled his name correctly. But if you ever need help at City Mill people, ask for Courtney by name. You can't miss him. He's the tallest and most upstanding employee City Mill Nimitz employs! Mahalo Courtney ! read more

Located right off of Nimitz Highway, this is one of the busier and seemingly larger City Mills. We have never had a problem finding someone here to help us. Never. That's saying something big, especially about a hardware store. There is always someone around to help you find something or answer questions. As far as that goes, this is one of the best hardware stores around as far as helping the customer to find what you need. I find that navigating these smaller stores is better than the "big box" hardware retailers because it's just easier to find what I am looking for, sans help, than wandering the massive aisles of a warehouse. The parking lot over here can get sometimes a bit congested. This is mostly due to the fact that everyone wants to park right in front where the parking area consists of an odd quasi-oval which makes it difficult to navigate. To avoid this just park to the left in the open lot area. read more

31 Yelps Review Challenge: 3/31 Shopping local is awesome! However, sometimes it is apparent why the national chains beat out the local ones. City Mill is a good case and point. As much as I wanted to like this place, I couldn't get over how (1) sloooooooow (2) dusty (3) expensive it was. My boss and I came here to pick-up some tables and plastic chairs for a work retreat. Since when do plastic lawn chairs cost $20/chair?!?! There was no one around to help us and we had to ask them to call someone to pull the table for us. However, they did not even offer to help us load the heavy purchase into our car (despite the fact that the place was nearly devoid of patrons). Aye yai yai-I will stick to Lowe's/Home Depot from here on out. read more

I try to shop here first if I need any home improvement stuff. If no moa then I head to da other big store around the corner. Gotta try and keep the local business's alive. GF's lamp broke. Found a new one. Took it home and realized the lamp shade wasn't in the box. We had a good laugh. How could it fit in the box? I so lolo sometimes. But how come the cashier never tell me. It said 1 of 2 on the box. Oh well. Called them up and they found my 2 of 2 box and held it for me. Ass alright. I still go to your store first. read more

The key chronicles continue. I went to Home Depot, and Lowes, both of which I wasted 10 or more minutes finding someone to help me, both of which were out of my particular type of popular key, and ended up coming to City Mill on my last thread of sanity. There was someone in line for keys already, but it didn't take long. The man put my key in a machine and it made a copy, pretty cheap, under $3 But of course after my almost 6 hours of trying to get one lousy key made, the key didn't work... I brought it back and different man helped me, I explained and he took my key right away saying "I'm sorry, I'll make a perfect copy for you." He didn't use the big computer looking machine, he did it "the old fashioned way". He said I didn't need to go to the cashier for an exchange or anything. I tried again... still didn't work. I wasn't sure why, to my eye it looked pretty exact. I went back for the 3rd time, and got the same man, I explained and he said again, "I'll make a perfect copy for you." This time he made two, one on the digital machine that makes an exact computer scanned copy, and one the "old fashioned way". Again, no charge. The keys didn't work. Why the 4 stars? Because City Mill did everything they could to resolve my problem, and even made TWO keys so that maybe I wouldn't have to come back a 4th time. The key was less than $3 and I could let it slide, I now have, 3 keys that don't work, and I completely trust the man that they were the best copies that could be done, and my original was perhaps a copy of a copy and can't be duplicated right, not their fault. read more

They have everything a household would need here from basic maintanence supplies to s slew of dressers, drawers, bathroom hanger appliances and more. I definitely recommend this place if you just so happened to be looking for a book shelf to place odd items on such as a printer, a microwave and a bag of onions. (gfs idea) we then opted to get an outdoor fruit and vegetable hanger, much like the ones they carry at bed bath and beyond. but SERIOUSLY! You should definitely come here if your looking for storage boxes, bathroom appliances, safety supplies etc., We came to this place because home depot didnt have what we were looking for. Its great because its not as crowded. They also have an outdoors section for gardening and plants. There is more than ample parking, and im pretty sure they have a lumber yard. read more

I should have came here instead of Lowes!! Awesome customer service, especially greeted us when we entered. Easy to find things because it is a small store compare to Lowes or Home Depot. Never going back to Lowes. No customer service and no employees near by. Citymill can be pricey, but some stuffs are affordable. Though id rather shop here than Lowes. read more

Don't you remember as a young kid, you're being dragged by your parents or grandparents to this store because they absolutely can't live without City Mill. But, as I got older I started coming here more often on my own. This is probably the most friendliest hardware store on the island. All their staff is very helpful, and they knew what they're doing! I come here often for home and business stuff, such as making key duplicates, cement, pipes, propane gas refills and many other stuff. Everything here is affordable and they usually have everything in stock! City Mill is located on Nimitz Highway, right before Hilo Hattie on the right side. Lots of parking too! read more

So we had bought a fan here about few months or so ago. Then one day it stop working. So with the weather being so hot we needed a new fan. So my husband calls and explains the situation and we obviously do not have the receipt. My husband said he spoke to DONNA and said she was very pleasant on the phone and stated we could just come in and do an exchange. So a few hours later he went thinking donna wouldn't be there but she was. Donna was pleasant and gave a no hassle exchange from beginning to end. I must admit we was hesitant to even ask cause the hassle of not having our receipt and more of old timer workers made us Leary. I'm glad my husband just decided to just call and ask. City mill you are great with your customer service, return and exchange policy. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! read more

I like City Mill! It is a good size so I don't get intimidated like the other big box stores. I came here because i needed a washer for a screw I bought from a big box store BUT I didn't want to have to hunt a washer down in a huge store. The ORGANIZATION SECTION ROCKS! The section where you can find cute Simply Human trash bins, small containers for your drawers, cute dish racks etc.... I once bought a dresser here and one of the drawers were warped. They gladly switched it out and even gave me a 25% off for the inconvenience! read more

Apparently Home Depot does not have it all. City Mill was the it go to place for any tools or home fixer-upper type of stuff. BUT when the big boys came in to town (Home Depot, Lowes)....City Mill had competition. I came here the other day with my Grandpa looking for a certain thing for the toilet. (yea the toilet broke...not my fault). Well we went to Home Depot first because we thought Home Depot had everything...We were wrong. We decided to go to our locally own business City Mill to see if they might have it. BOOM! They had it. The sales people helped us immediately because I sure know I don't know what I'm talking about and who knows if Grandpa did too... I guess to summarize this event is that don't always rely on big name store because your local small store may have that one thing that no one else has. SUPPORT LOCAL! read more

I shop at City Mill often since it is a lot easier to find items because of all the helpful sales associates. I will only go to the big box stores for items that City Mill doesn't carry. The service at City Mill is incomparable to the oftentimes "non-service" I receive at Home Depot. Granted, Home Depot's and Lowes' inventories are huge compared to City Mills', but I've found myself wandering the aisles at Home Depot looking for items and no sales associates around to help me. I'm also quite short and cannot reach the items on the upper shelves, and again, no one around to assist me. More often than not when I shop at Home Depot, I just leave the store empty-handed because of this. Anyway, I felt that I absolutely had to write a review of City Mill because of the stellar service I received yesterday and today. (In fact, I had visited the store (in Waimalu) numerous times in the past couple of weeks and I have always received good service. The person in the lumber department who helped me choose wood for shelving was very helpful and I wish I had caught his name. Kevin in the paint department was also very helpful. And the female associate in the hardware section who, bless her soul, found the exact screws for my cabinet knobs and I didn't even have to waste my time looking for them.) But this is a special thank you to Aly, the cashier for always being so pleasant and helpful, and to Beau (Bo?) and Desmond for their patience and attentive service when I needed assistance in putting together a deck box. Their professionalism and desire to make sure that I got what I needed was nothing short of outstanding. I am a very satisfied customer and I will always do my shopping at City Mill. read more

I'm probably biased. No, I am biased. When I was young, I worked city mill in market city..Yep. That long ago. I still love the place. Man I had the worst experience here.. not once but twice. Hence it was post worthy. I had heard Citi mill does screen repair and I had one in need of repair. I went down to this location and the gentleman that had helped me sold me a replacement screen and because my dogs had damaged it I got the pet proof screen along with an additional metal guard. He said they were backed up on orders and it might be a few weeks. No problem I wasn't in a rush. After confirming that the screen would be repaired and the guard attached I paid and left. I received a call a couple weeks later notifying me my screen was ready. So I cleaned out my car as I had to load the screen into it to get it home. Upon my arrival the employee took a long time to find my screen and when she did the guard wasn't attached.. I was on a tight schedule that day so I told them the guy who sold it to me said it would be completed and it wasn't. I left thinking they would fix it but only to find out they don't even provide that service!! So I had to make another trip back to pick it up and that was another whole ordeal... definitely not pleased with their service and lack thereof also Amazon was $20 cheaper and minus the headache... I should have just returned the guard... read more

It's not HD or L. It's a quaint mom & pop place. The staff try their best to help out when they are not restocking or running around helping clients. So lately I've been practicing my carpentry and I've been buying lots of stuff from City Mill. I like to support the locally owned businesses rather then the big corporate stores, and if you shop smart, you can find stuff that is cheaper then those big box stores. When Purchasing wood, they will only give you 1 free cut, while Home Depot will do 2 for free but they do carry more local kind stuff like swap meet tents, cheapo bargain basement gewgaws, and furniture. read more

That's when Charlie stepped in and assisted me with finding what I needed. Yah - I've asked for advice from those guys - my bad, but they gave half-decent comments! Anyway... Its soooo comfortable there. I think it's a comfort thing that reminds me of my father. He was a true blue fan of the Waipahu City Mill. I needed a clevis pin with a ring....ok, head to the orange store...nope...ok, try the other big one, nada. Then as my last stop...City Mill...voila! There it is! Customer service is top notch, like we were used to back when customer service was because you were valued. At City Mill, YOU STILL ARE! When you are in need of items for jalousie repair, screen fixings, paint, cleaning the stovetops, storage and more...remember that you can visit one of the many locations on O'ahu and get out with just that one stop shopping.
