Generally not my first choice when I think of construction stuff, but when I need specific small things, they have a good selection. Batteries for you key fobs or any remotes, they have some of the best options. They also have a few aisles with all types of special screws or smart parts for furniture, appliances or caps etc. The parking lot is big, I've never seen it full. Check the hours before stopping by, they have less hours than the big box stores. Overall, I'd recommend them for hard to find house or construction related items. read more

Very Poor quality Products. Purchased a 30 Gallon Water Heater New on 12/10/25. Unit was installed out of the box on March 13th 2026 and did not work. Called store to get a replacement unit after sending them pictures showing the Water Heater had rust inside the unit despite being New. Management refused to replace it Also did a very large purchase order for bathroom vanity units which were damaged and in very bad condition due to broken sinc and misaligned particle board cabinets. Hi Carol Ai, I see that you have responded to some posts and hoping you will consider my experience and make some changes. As I type this I am on hold, 23 minutes and counting it is 1:11pm on 10/24/25. I know that the return policy has been changed to require a receipt, no matter how long ago the purchase was, even same day... I wish that you would reconsider this policy as it unnecessarily punishes the good faith customers due some activity of bad actor customers. I know the big box guys will ban some customers for excessive returns, or perhaps you can set a maximum value limit for a return without a receipt. I checked on line and the return policy specifically states "OUR RETURN POLICY (ONLINE & IN STORE) We will cheerfully exchange or refund your purchase (product and a photo ID needed) within 90 days of purchase." As of today I have a can of bondo and a plumbing valve purchased in September 2025 that they will not let me return, even for store credit and even though they still have the city mill skews. I also have my credit card statement showing the purchase, I just want store credit as I know I will be back. Its now 1:17 pm, still nobody picking up. approaching 30 min. on hold. Also, as a bonus request, the parking lot at kaimuki really needs to be repaired and the cat doo doo in the dirt planters is really gross. You can usually find me at Ala Moana. That's more my speed. It was interesting to see what they sold. You can find whatever you need for your house at this place. They sell things for your house, yard and car. If you want to repaint your house they have that too. I was mostly standing by the fans and AC. It was so hot outside that it was cooling me down. They also sell snacks and drinks by the checkout. They actually sell soda and bottled water by the case. It struck me as kind of strange, but what do I know. Local kine Home Depot/Lowe's in Honolulu, Hawaii... My non-Yelp friend doesn't go to Kalihi often. I decided to give her a tour of the "Original" City Mill. She was immediately impressed by the free parking lot, which isn't busy-crazy-crowded like the Kaimuki location. I personally like the Kaneohe location, but that's another story... Note: There are also locations in Waianae, Hawaii Kai, and Ewa Beach! We walked through the power tools, paint, automotive, home organization, lighting, household cleaning aids, and furniture departments, then went outside to check out the gravel, fertilizer, lumber, and live plants. My friend ended up getting a paint brush (which she will use as a duster around edges in the house), and she got a tile with two compartments for her green onions (which need tall sides to block the wind). I went to city Mill to order some new screens. After a month I called back to check on the status of my screens and apparently it wasn't even started. I spoke to Julian, the manager for that day. Julian's customer service was excellent. He checked on my screen orders, realized that it wasn't even started. Julian did what all good leaders do. He LEAD! Julian provided me with great customer service that included an apology which is rare these days. I sincerely commend city mill for hiring such an individual thank you city mill. read more

I went to City Mill to get some screens remade, I even had the old ones to give to them to use as a pattern. That was July 19, and for 4 screens it cost me $215. I called them on August 9 since I had NOT heard anything from them. The screen guy told me he had the metal cut, but it wasn't put together or screened yet. I asked when he would be able to finish it as he had it for 3 weeks already and he said he would get to it tomorrow. I called about 1 PM the next day, and again the guy said he had NOT gotten to it yet. I called the supervisor to get him to get it done and SURPRISE I got a call at 5 PM with a message that the screens were done. I went in the next morning, 8/11, and picked them up and they looked real good, very nice. I took them home and installed the springs to hold them in and tried to install the screens. One fit VERY tightly and didn't need the spring clips to hold the screen in, and the other three were too tall and did NOT FIT. I call the Store Manager about how dissatisfied I was with the terrible service and the huge mess up on the fit. I asked what they were going to do, well she, Ms. Nelson the Store Manager, told me to bring them back in, and they would correct them but no idea when they would be fixed, and I would need to bring them in and I would get no consideration for the long length of time it took them to make them, then to make them wrong, then my time and effort to go down and get them ordered, pay in advance and all the aggravation. Ms Nelson said it is first come first served as to WHEN they get to the screens, and no discount or consideration for the aggravation and time their company caused me to waste using their services. If you have a option, it seems not even a great option to City Mill, THEN USE IT. City Mill is EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL and have a terrible customer service and don't make up for their mistakes, they expect the customer to go out of their way for them to correct their mistakes. The store does have delivery and one of their employees could have come down to pick up their mistakes and see the bad fit and figure out how much was needed to take off to fix, or do new measurements to make a correct set of screens. But no, Ms. Nelson expects me to bring the screens in and do all of the work and she expects to take NONE OF THE LIABILITY OF TERRIBLE SERVICE AND POOR AND UNPROFESSIONAL MANUFACTURING OF THEIR SCREENS. I WILL NEVER DO ANY BUSINESS WITH CITY MILL AGAIN DUE TO THIS UNPROFESSIONAL WAY THEY TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. YOU SHOULD NOT SHOP THERE EITHER. GO TO HOME DEPOT OR LOWE'S, BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PROFESSIONAL QUALITY SERVICES. Just added the photos to show how the terrible work they do at City Mill. While the screens look very nice, 3 out of the 4 that took 3 and 1/2 weeks to do are too long and don't fit. Ahhh the local place for just about everything is our City Mill! Hardware, furniture, storage, plants, paint, all things needed during the horrible pandemic and yes even snacks City Mill has been my savior in so many ways. This particular Iwilei location is the closest for me if I'm going after work which I needed to do after my work cart that I use for just about eeeeeverything wheel fell off "AHHHHHUG!!" Mind you I bought this cart here as well lol! Everything went everywhere and was in no mood to get on my hands and knees to recover washers and what not to put it all back together....sigh!! Everything here is labeled and so easy to find it was a matter or searching which was the closest one I needed...after two washers and a wrench I did a quick surgery in the parking lot to beside I got everything I needed it was just a matter of minutes and all is finally good...hoooray!!! I'm not shopping here anymore. Lowe's and Home Depot are right around the corner and they have enough staff walking around the store to prevent theft so they don't need to harass customers about their bags. Why the bag policy is stupid and terrible idea for business customer service: 1. If someone wants to steal, they can just put things in their pockets, or just simply walk out with stuff, you can't stop them. 2. It's discriminatory. If I was a woman carrying a purse you wouldn't make me leave my purse. But I'm a guy with a backpack and so you think you can just profile me as a potential thief? It's offensive to someone who consistently spends thousands of dollars in your store. 3. It's inconsistently enforced. More than half the time I walk in the staff at the registers don't even notice me walking in with my backpack, leading me to assume it's not enforced. And if I knew it was enforced, I'd have to wait for the staff to get their attention to give them my bag. Time is money and that's a waste of my time and therefore money. 4. I have important valuable stuff in my bag that I need in the store, like my cellphone and wallet, notes on a project and maybe a piece of gear that I need to measure against something I need to buy. I'm carrying a backpack because it won't all fit in my pockets, so this is seriously inconvenient. 5. If you don't trust me, why should I trust you? Shopping involves mutual trust. I have to trust that the stuff you're selling is worth my money and now you want me to leave my bag with you? Store staff steal things too! Or another customer can take it, does City Mill really want to assume that liability? I might have my expensive laptop in my backpack, if your staff drops it and it breaks, I'll definitely sue you if anything happens to my backpack. City Mill won't take responsibility for valuables left in a car in their parking lot so they're putting customers in this bad situation. The inconsistent enforcement and liability issue with leaving my bag at the register creates unnecessary and uncomfortable friction between customers and staff and just illustrates City Mill's ineffective customer service strategy and philosophy. To top it off, when they do happen to notice you walking in with your bag and decide they want to enforce the policy that day, the staff act like they think they're the police and treat you like a shoplifter already. I usually goto Lowe's but wanted to try out this place. Purchased multiple things over several trips to fix 2 toilets in house on January 2. Ended up returning 2 items. One for not being right size and the other for being defective and parts missing. Got 2 refund receipts for total of $27.20. Was told 3-5 business days to have it credited back to debit card. That was 12 days ago and at this time I have yet to see the credit. Called the store x1. Told me to call my bank who said they can't look up pending returns. Wrote the main office over 24 hours ago via email and no reply. Never had such an issue with a return done at register not posting to account. Not much support. read more

On-the-go place to grab things we need to improve the tiki nest. This might be an old store in the island but still I find it helpful and convenient. Not all the time though as they have smaller selection of products. Service is fair enough. We've crossed good employee and sometimes, not-in-the-mood ones. That makes life fair enough so as this store. Every time we returned our purchased in here so far we didn't encounter problems. They assisted us promptly. And if we raised questions by far they were helpful. Prices is I think fair enough. Depending on what you need. I think what other customers like in here is the ample parking space for them. I was on the way home from town and I needed some supplies to update up my kitchen and flooring. I wanted to shop local so I stopped by here. It was really disappointing to not find what I was looking for. I asked two associates for help but they just pointed to where to go instead of helping me find what I was looking for. After ten minutes of walking around I gave up and went home. When I got to Home Depot, the associates actually take you where you need to go. I was sad that a local company can't show the same aloha. I haven't been to City Mill for a while so I forgot how friendly they are here. I came in with my Dad looking for supplies to make a window frame and also to purchase a new window air conditioner. Upon entering the store I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed help. I told the employee what I was looking for and they directed me where to go. a minute after walking into city mill, lawrence, an employee asks mom & i if we needed any help. without his help, we would have never figured out which lamp to purchase. mom needs an extra bright lamp to read her morning newspaper. lawrence advised us to use a bigger brighter bulb instead of the normal sized bulb. he said a normal bulb will shine wider vs the bigger bulb shining directly where you're pointing the lamp. both bulbs were the same lumen & there was definitely a difference. prior to city mill, spent 1/2 an hr. at lowe's without anyone saying a word to me. 5 employees walked by me, nothing. i would have never received the service i received at city mill at lowe's. hope lawrence's manager sees this review because he went out of his way to help us & we are most appreciative. thanks again lawrence! read more

Great hardware store. Shopping at a local state business as opposed to the national chains. I think the customer service was great too. Not huge but they do pack a lot in here and they seem to have a good stock for people who have who live in Hawaii as the inventory tends to reflect different building components and Hawaii problems you might face. My condo was built in 1960 a little bit after the flagship City Mill store opened in 1950, I have a lot of original Japanese style woodwork and fixtures, obscure bulbs, etc. It feels like you're talking to a local contractor who been in the homes of Hawaii when I come here. I probably am. Makes me feel more secure in resolving my problems or making what ever improvement I need. A lot of these big chains they have retail people who know inventory, maybe had a crash course but not really working in the field and familiar with the area. Just more general. Went in to get a screw, first associate we asked passed to another associate who did not have any or very little knowledge of hardware section. He told us to look in the aisle . Second associate called for another associate who never showed up, when the second associate walk back by asked if anyone came, I said no, she just kept walking down another aisle and into admin office. Associate tells me he will look and puts me on hold. 9 minutes later someone else picks up phone and asks what I want. I tell them someone else is checking inventory for me but it has been 9 minutes. They put me back on hold. 11 minutes into the call, someone else picks up and asks if I've been helped yet. They tell me they're going to get a supervisor. 15 minutes into the call they get back on and ask me to remind them what I was looking for, and tell me a supervisor is going to help me. 21 minutes into call they get on the phone and ask me again what I want. 23 minutes into the call they finally tell me the prices. It's $259 for the weed wacker and $259 for the leaf blower. On Amazon they sell the 2 together for $299. Before the big box home stores (Home Depot, Lowes) we had City Mill as one of few home improvement stores we could shop at. The box stores came, they are still here and so is City Mill. Kudos to the owners and management for providing such a homegrown store. I see contractors lounging through the back shelves filled with lumber, nuts and bolts like I would be lounging through Macy's Dress Department for the newest items. My Christmas tree for the past 2 years were purchased at City Mill. My new LED light bulbs came from City Mill as it was their loss leader product on January 1, 2018. Bought a dozen! (I get this feeling the bulbs will outlive me LOL.) One thing never changed. While the owners and management kept up with progress and instituted change for the better, their staff never failed to deliver great customer service. Oh, did I mention the ample parking? My wife & I walked in knowing what we were going to purchase. We did walk around to grab a couple small items. When it was time to check out & pay, the older gentleman was not friendly. We purchased a small dining table & 4 chairs. We had to wait for them to have another associate to go to the back & get our items. We waited a long time. The associate who retrieved our items was not friendly either. It was very hard to tell if they had a smile during our interactions because everyone was wearing a mask. Finally, the store was really slow & did not have a lot of customers during our visit. Hopefully leadership will read this review & provide better training for their staff. It seems though things are not as they seem the building smells of mold and workers don't have the drive or compassion anymore. Texting and not paying any attention to what's going on. City Mill is a locally owned home improvement and building contractors' retail and wholesale store. They've been in business for over a century and prior to the Mainland Big Box home improvement centers (Home Depot, Lowe's and Eagle), most locals shopped here. In fact, we still do shop here. We remember the family-like charm of being greeted at the entrance by an elderly white-haired Chinese man, George, who always had a smile or something nice to say. He seemed to be a DIY'er himself as we often saw him making keys, helping out in the hardware and even plumbing sections. He was so helpful just as many of the other workers. Gosh, if we had a question about a product or how to fix or build something, we could just any one of the workers and the information would come spouting out with expertise. Great customer service was at the forefront of all of the employees although, prices were a bit higher than at the big box stores. But, hey, at least we'd never have to search for help as workers would voluntarily offer advice. Recently, we needed to purchase some wood (mahogany) planks to make shelves and wandered into the lumberyard. My husband had carefully measured the area that we wanted to make a shelving system for and brought his plans. We met with an employee, Rudin, who was friendly and efficient. He assisted us with cutting the planks into lengths my husband had planned for and even recommended a couple of products to finish and enhance the wood that we're using in our new home. We found out that he was an employee in training but you'd not guess it as he has a great command of the equipment and knowledge of materials. But, he's being transferred to the Mililani location to share his expertise. I gotta give props to this giant slayer of a hardware store! Gang, forget about Home Depot, or Lowes! Give this locally owned, family business the love & support that they deserve! I found myself at City Mill today, as I was looking for a replacement security mailbox, because my old security mailbox actually broke! I bought my security mailbox from Home Depot back in 2001, and I feel very fortunate that my security mailbox had lasted that long.........especially since it had to endure all the elements from the Hawaiian outdoor weather like the - sun, UV rays, heat, rain, & snow (Nah! I'm just kidding! I'm just checking to see if you reading this! Lol!) Well, it's now year 2016..........and off I went to Home Depot to look for the identical security mailbox that I had. Upon looking around, I find out that Home Depot no longer sells this particular mailbox in the store. They only sell this particular security mailbox "on-line" for $66.54. So from there, I went to Lowes Home Improvement to look & hunt for my mailbox.......no luck here either, and from there, I decided to go to City Mill............ My only regret was........"Why didn't I come here first?" I should have come here first because City Mill actually sold the security mailbox I was looking for.......I ended up paying ($86.90), a little more than if I had ordered it on-line from Home Depot, but the good thing about this was I really needed the mailbox right now! And City Mill sure came through! I was also really surprised to find another large security mailbox that City Mill sold, went for a very reasonable price of $49.99, and you know what? At Home Depot, & Lowes Home Improvement - they sold the identical mailbox - but their prices went for $86.22, & $72.67 dollars respectively. So City Mill was actually the place to go for a real good deal on a security mailbox! Dealages Yo!!! Last of all, I want to give props to a new trainee clerk named - Franciscos. He was very helpful in addressing my needs when I inquired about the security mailbox I was looking for. He checked to see the inventory within the store, and he even went beyond the boundaries by checking the Kaimuki store too, to see if they had the security mailbox in their inventory too. (Kaimuki did not have it) Upon looking at the inventory from this store, the mailbox indeed was there, and he took the time to help me find the mailbox which I was looking for on the rack. I just finished installing my new mailbox a few hours ago, and dumped my old one.........I am hoping this new mailbox will last just as long as the previous one! Yay! read more

Although they may not be as big as Home Depot and Lowes, and thus may not be able to offer rock bottom prices like those places, but their customer service sets themselves apart from the rest. I've always loved supporting local businesses and City Mill, after 100+ years in business, is a wonderful example of a successful local business! Big Box retailers have caused a lot of small local businesses to go under over the years, so I believe that it's important to support local. Of course big box retailers may have a much better selection, but it doesn't necessarily mean that their prices will be lower. I've found items that I needed at City Mill that I couldn't find at a big box store. You just have to look harder, but chances are they probably have the item available. There's times I've looked for something at City Mill and couldn't find it, but at least I always give them the first shot before I go elsewhere. One concern I've heard from several employees is that they are so short staffed. They are way below the levels they were before the pandemic started. So for those of you who may get irritated by slow service or maybe feel like you are being ignored, cut them some slack! There's always a reason for slow service so find out first before assuming things and writing a one star review. I believe that one star reviews are few to come by, so be sure you have a reason before you down a business. They have opened a dedicated paint store, only thing its at the Pearl City store. I happen to like Benjamin Moore paints and buy all my paint from City Mill. Their paint department employees are very courteous and knowledgable and I appreciate that. They are also pretty conscientious at making sure you don't have to wait too long for your paint to be mixed. You can also ask them any question that you may have about paint and the associated stuff that goes along with it. This location is probably my favorite one but don't get me wrong, all of the locations are pretty good! So remember to give this local company a chance to fulfill your home improvement needs before going to a big box retailer. LOCATION: on nimitz right across of zippys. CUSTOMER SERVICE: havent really spoke to the workers. just bought something and that was it lol the cashiers are pretty nice though! APPEARANCE: everything is in sections so im pretty sure you will find what you need quick! it's not that hard to find anything. super neat.
