I love those fantasy-based commercials for big-box home improvement stores. There are always tons of clerks around who spend hours helping customers. In reality, every time I go into one, I hear coqui frogs chirping. (That's what you hear in Hawaii instead of crickets.) If you are actually able to find someone who works there, there's a good chance it's not their section. Go into City Mill, and there are plenty of people to help you. You will no longer need to load up on food and water to sustain you as you roam the aisles looking for signs of life. Some people even ask if you need help! Crazy. The stores aren't as cavernous as the big-boxes, but they still carry a ton of stuff. I've always found everything I needed. That includes cool organizational stuff. The houseplants I've gotten there have all been healthy and non-buggy. One time I got a shelving unit that was impossible to assemble. Took it back to the store and the guy was going to put it together for me for free. Unfortunately, he was also unsuccessful, so I got a refund. I was there recently on a blazing hot afternoon. I was melting. The cashier was very kind; she turned on her clip-on fan and handed it to me. She also got me some towels and they welcomed me to sit inside in the a/c while I waited for my ride. She was really awesome and I wish I'd gotten her name to give her proper credit. This location has mucho parking. The 19 and 20 buses stop very close by. I knocked off one star for the occasionally clueless store staffer. On this last trip one fellow was blocking the right side of the aisle with a cart. Two feet away, he had a ladder blocking the left side of the narrow aisle. I was clearly searching for something, but not only did he not ask if I needed help, he pushed right past me. I had to step aside to avoid a crash. Not the first time stuff like this has happened, but the positives definitely outweigh the negatives at City Mill. read more

I went to get some help with some plastic tabs on a new screen that had pulled off when I was trying to install it. I did not know there were two types of tabs - one that's solid and one which is open in the middle which is what they had used. Alex was very nice when I asked him if there was a way to remove the broken tabs and replace with solid ones. He looked at the frame and meticulously removed the broken tabs and installed the new solid tabs which was what I had wanted in the first place. When I asked him how much I owed them he told me "no charge". This was a small but very kind gesture which made me want to spend more money with this local business. instead of going to a big box hardware store to compare prices I decided to continue my shopping and bought two more items that I normally would've done price comparisons on elsewhere. I was at the other city Mill and I noticed that they have a whole parking lot that's basically unused on a corner and I said man I wish I had a little hotdog stand or a donut shop or any type of business instead of just a few cars in the parking lot this is both for limits and for Waialae. I talk to a lot of contractors that use both places and said what if there was a little café what if we took and made the parking lot better and made a café that extend it out over the existing parking lot where people could sit and have a cuppa coffee or a beer and shop for trees and shrubs and plants and make that your showcase for plants. There's plenty of parking to accommodate us and a lot of the longtime customers would like to maybe sit and have a cuppa coffee while the other partner shops or at the end of the day have a beer and talk to other contractors about solutions for your business you can't just be a hardware store anymore you have to be a fabric of society not just say that you are but doSomething dramatic that showcases that show what you can build short deck that can be built I bet you can get a lot of people with volunteer to help make a nice deck and a haole on the corner with shaded parking and you could have a few drinks and a beer and talk about building stuff read more

As a City Mill customer for the past 10 years, let this review be one that I hope will wake managers and supervisors up on how important it is that how you greet your clients when they arrive and when they leave are very important. It's sad cause they lost over a $100 sale and not sure if we need to go back with so many other options these days. We went to the gardening department to pick up some plants. Before purchasing all of 5 plants, I go to the cashier outside and had ONE simple question. And we won't drop names because I feel really sad for her to NOT have any customer service etiquette and to be that rude she must be sad or dealing with something heavy in life. So we wish her some love and hope she will realize that it is her responsibility to give good service and know her products because that is what she is getting paid for. And, it's the best for City Mill's brand. As I was waiting to speak to her, there were 2 gentlemen in line. They way she was speaking to them was as if she had no time. So I waited till she did have a lot of time. "Hi, could you tell me if this plant requires a lot of water?" Cashier: "What? Why you ask me for?" "Well because you work here in this department." Cashier: "So, I no grow plants. So all the plants were left there, went into the store and asked for both supervisor and GM and none were available. So we were given this survey card and I said that's not how it's done today. It's easier today, save paper, this is why Yelp is for. Store manager Rudy Valencia is very judgemental. He asked for my large bag which I had my tool to match cord. Then he demands to take my purse too. Made me look to be a thief. I've been to City Mill over 25 years because I am one to support local businesses of Hawaii. Though, to be treated as such by a manager of all team members is uncalled for. Yes, I understand and dealt with many regular customers whose goal is to steal as much as they can as a team. And yes with the law we can not do anything once they leave that door. Ihave worked for customer service for over 27 years so I believe it should be on the priority list. Without our customers what are we? Do not get your keys made here. The employee was not trained properly, he didn't take my original key off the ring and the copy was so off from my original that both newly made keys did not work. I had to drive all the way back in lunch hour traffic to get them re done. 45 minutes wasted not to mention the gas driving back and forth. They should not allow an employee who does not know how to make keys work at the key counter. So disappointed, irritated and unhappy with them today. They made me 2 new keys and refunded my $5, but I value my wasted time more. Whoever the manager is, please train your employees better!!!!!!!! read more

This was almost a one-star review. I felt that it deserved two stars because the store was pretty stocked up with merchandise and a couple of the employees were nice. The other employees just stood around not even acknowledging my presence. No one greeted me or asked if I needed anything. After grabbing what I needed I went over to the section where they make duplicates for keys. I waited for about 5 minutes then a supervisor named Curtis asked me "what you need?" After he was done with making my duplicates, he placed it on the counter and looked at the customer behind me. He didn't say a single word to me or to the other customer. As a small child I recall numerous trips to this City Mill as relatives would come here to pick-up all sorts of household goods for home improvements, fixing and supplies. However, with Home Depot and Lowe's in the same area, I have been guilty of going to the much larger stores for lower prices and a larger selection. Just the other day when I was doing laundry at home, I noticed a small rodent zip from the kitchen to the laundry room. I was surprised and annoyed of this critter in my home so I immediately drove to Home Depot to buy sticky pads to catch the rodent. I strategically put the bait in the center of each trap and placed them but only to be disappointed as the bait disappeared on each trap! Growing up in Chinatown I recall my paternal grandmother setting metal rat trap cages and would catch the rodents. I originally wanted this cage but Home Depot didn't have it so I had to settle with the sticky pads. I then decided to give City Mill a try so I drove to this store this afternoon. As I pulled into the parking lot it brought back my childhood memories. The store pretty much looks the same and I went to the garden area outside to look for the rat cages. To my delight I found the cages and because it was costly I decided to consult with a clerk as well as getting the proper instructions to operate them. I had Steve assist me and he was in the middle of moving some heavy supplies but stopped and answered my questions. He admitted to me he is a farm boy and is familiar with catching rodents as they are very smart creatures. Steve gave me his professional opinion and although he highly recommended the largest sticky traps City Mill carries, I ended up buying the cage. I chuckled when he asked if I was going to put cheese as the bait (as we grew up thinking rodents love to eat cheese) but I remember my grandmother using a piece of Chinese roast pork for high success rate! Steve advised me either celery or peanut butter works well. Upon check-out the cashier was very friendly and I walked out with what I sought to purchase. There are three hardware stores all in very close proximity to each other in this area. City Mill is always my first choice because they are the local Kamaaina store of the 3. Even though the other stores seem much larger in size and selection, City Mill always seems to have what I'm looking for. I stopped in the other day and all three things that I needed were there. A plunger, a remote control switch for the lamp, and a TV tray table. Because I was in close proximity to the other two, I stopped in for comparison shopping. Much to my surprise, City Mill had the much better price and selection than the other two much larger stores. Also when it comes to propane, City Mill will refill your tank not just sell you a Blue Rhino refill tank. There always seems to be ample parking and a friendly greeter to tell you where to look for things. All the employees are super helpful. Had to buy some stuff for storage so went to this location -- it's a chain store BTW -- and found that the selection was kinda "JUNK" as locals would say. It had a little of everything, but not enough of anything. I wanted one of those over the commode storage things and they had one made of metal with glass (yeah great idea for a bathroom type storage) and it was very wobbly! I didn't think that was a good idea as we have a kid! Then there were these plastic ones which naturally were even worse than the metal one. Finally I settled on a wooden one which wasn't all that sturdy or well made either, but at least, it was the best of the lot. There were so many things I needed but I just couldn't decide because of the poor selection. Ended up buying a storage rack but that's it. It's very difficult to do any sort of home improvements here because of the lack of selection available. People just make do with crappy furniture, but then again, this is where everyone likes to hang out in their garages and have parties, so I guess you wouldn't really need good furniture anyway. read more

When you have time, read City Mill's history. It is truly inspiring and a great story of perseverance and dedication. It is why City Mill has lasted for over a century and still going strong even with competition from Home Depot and Lowe's a block away. I normally go to Home Depot because of item availability and prices, and other than supporting Jimmie Johnson and his #48 Team, I totally gave up on Lowe's because the customer service is nonexistent and terrible. I came to this City Mill because the other two store didn't have the specific item I needed. This place is very easy to get to from Nimitz with ample, spacious parking. There's a homely feel to this store right when you enter. It's probably because the store isn't huge with a 50 ft. high ceiling. The aisles were spacious and clear, and every item appeared stocked and well-organized. The staff here are all very friendly and extremely helpful, and you will have no problem finding one. I needed 20 of a certain item, and there was only 10 on the shelf, and one of the staff members searched high and low through almost the entire store only to eventually see it in the "special buy" section right before the cashiers. Of all places lol. The service at City Mill is miles above Home Depot and Lowe's. Although the prices for a majority of the items are slightly higher, the items it carries are mostly better quality. The only thing I wish City Mill had was the power to search for items and pricing on its website. read more

I've always loved supporting local businesses and City Mill, after 100+ years in business, is a wonderful example of a successful local business! Big Box retailers have caused a lot of small local businesses to go under over the years, so I believe that it's important to support local. Of course big box retailers may have a much better selection, but it doesn't necessarily mean that their prices will be lower. I've found items that I needed at City Mill that I couldn't find at a big box store. You just have to look harder, but chances are they probably have the item available. There's times I've looked for something at City Mill and couldn't find it, but at least I always give them the first shot before I go elsewhere. One concern I've heard from several employees is that they are so short staffed. They are way below the levels they were before the pandemic started. So for those of you who may get irritated by slow service or maybe feel like you are being ignored, cut them some slack! There's always a reason for slow service so find out first before assuming things and writing a one star review. I believe that one star reviews are few to come by, so be sure you have a reason before you down a business. They have opened a dedicated paint store, only thing its at the Pearl City store. I happen to like Benjamin Moore paints and buy all my paint from City Mill. Their paint department employees are very courteous and knowledgable and I appreciate that. They are also pretty conscientious at making sure you don't have to wait too long for your paint to be mixed. You can also ask them any question that you may have about paint and the associated stuff that goes along with it. This location is probably my favorite one but don't get me wrong, all of the locations are pretty good! So remember to give this local company a chance to fulfill your home improvement needs before going to a big box retailer. And that rarely happens at the Home Depot that I frequent. In fact, I had to interrupt two workers in conversation at that store to get assistance. I try supporting the local business. So I chose to do the curbside pick up . But I had to go in the store and wait and interact with the clerk . What is the purpose of doing the pick up . Also I don't appreciate getting Lysol spray all over me when I enter the store . And while I'm waiting she kept spraying too , when each person got inside . Ready for pick up means that it's ready to pick up . I could of just shopped regularly and still get Lysol spray all over me . There are so many people that are allergic to chemicals inside those things and Lysol are supposed to be sprayed when you leave the store when people are not around . Over a hundred years of good kama'aina service and still going strong. Last time I really needed plastic sheeting and I couldn't believe that they no longer carried it. I had to go to Lowes... That disappointment aside, I really like the variety of hardware, home products, decoration ideas, furniture, organizational ideas, plants, lawn and garden, paint and lumber all in one place. I bought a canopy pop up tent with the walls that swing up to make a really big tent. I will use it on my deck. To my surprise, the deal was so good, I had to go to three different stores to get it. Prior to the COVID-19 lockdown which has sent our world into a complete unknown whirlwind, I had sold my house and was scheduled to move by early/mid April. Thanks to 'Rona I'm now faced with the biggest challenge when it comes to moving - with pretty much everything being closed, where can I get things like cleaning supplies for my house and what about furniture?! Thanks to my local City Mill I was able to find a beautiful yet simple sturdy wooden extendable kitchen table that matched (OMG, a plus for sure!) the decor of my new home. Initially I saw it online but could get a definitive answer from I'm the online inventory that I was able to pick it up in store. Lucky I was able to find it at the Nimitz location, but there was a catch and a major one. I wanted a matching bench (2 for that matter) to go with the table. The benches were so cute! It would allow my kiddos and I more room at the table and be more comfortable when eating or just enjoying ourselves when at the table. Anyhoo, so the catch - the benches weren't in stock due to the Coronavirus pandemic and they wouldn't know when, if ever, it would come in. I was about to cry. There's literally no other furniture store that's open and I'm all honesty, being able to score solid wood furniture at a reasonable price is unheard of. Nowadays everything is pressboard and that's a definite no-go for me. Seriously if it wasn't for Ryan my kiddos and I would still be eating on the living room floor. He was so incredibly and totally awesome enough to allow me to purchase the sales floor model. OMG! Yes! Thank you! Thank you! I was so stoked you have no idea. I knew that Ryan was already having one hellacious morning so I was very grateful for him to go above and beyond to help me. I don't just mean pointing to an aisle when I ask for an item either. If I ask about what they recommend for a certain project I'm working on, they will actually take the time to find out more about what I'm doing and what I'm looking for. If I'm having difficulty with a do-it-yourself repair, they'll even walk me through the step-by-step options, along with product suggestions. Everyone I've spoken to on the floor is friendly, experienced, patient and easy to talk with. The cashiers are also efficient and helpful. City Mill doesn't stock as much as Home Depot or Lowe's, and sometimes prices can be more expensive, but also it depends on what you are looking for. Curtis helped me with my project, not only carrying the sheet of plywood but he was so patient as I asked him to cut several pieces from that one sheet. I feel comfortable in their stores with their air conditioned showroom and organized display on unique items. You can find some things that other hardware stores don't have. There's also lots of parking. I went to their Honolulu store last night and was impressed by the great service of Daniel Y. I needed some help and he came to my assistance right away and provided excellent service. Very fast and proficient. The cashiers are also friendly and fast. Once again I had another errand. This time, with concrete. My pavement was cracked over the many years of use, and I decided to head down to City Mill in Iwilei. I walked into the outdoor section of the store, and I asked around for the concrete. Leman, asked me what the purpose of the concrete was, and it was to do some patching up of some concrete that'd cracked. He let me know that sand topper would be the concrete to do the job. He walked with me to where it was, and I was just about to roll the heavy duty trolley over to do my heavy lifting. "Wait, let me get the forklift." Leman was nice enough to get his forklift, lift the whole pallet of concrete, and drive it with me as I walked to the register to pay. I was fully prepared for the labor I'd have to do to move that concrete into the car, but he got his forklift and after I paid, drove it all the way to the back of my car to help me put it in the trunk. The customer service is unparalleled in home improvement and I recommend everyone go here for their hardware and home improvement needs. The staff is knowledgeable and puts customer service first!
