Yes, I trim my own yard. So when my youthful Stihl Trimmer no longer cooperated, the team at Kaimuki Ace came to my rescue! While they carry a number of Stihl Trimmers for sale, Tyler told me that all I needed was the replacement head. Sadly I came at a time that it wasn't on the shelf so he offered to special order the part for me. When it arrived, Tyler gave me a courtesy call to come in and pick it up. When I arrived, Roy was the helpful associate. I paid for the part, which was very reasonable!! Then I asked for help to remove the broken head and install the new one. Ace Hardware in Kaimuki is a small store that carries your basic home improvement necessities. They also carry specialty items that other stores don't have. -When I needed a product that the professionals used to remove the clear coat, Ace had it. -When I needed a specific drain cleaner that reacted to water instantly, Ace had it. -When I needed fast acting paint remover, Ace had it. WES answered my phone call about a product I needed, when I came in I was greeted *AND SHOWN where the product was by a female employee and when I was walking back to pay, Wes saw me and suggested another product (to go with what I had) to help me clear hair from the drain. This place stayed open thru the entire pandemic, did not inflate prices for hard to get items and sends me stuff ($5 off?) on my birthday. "Ace is the Place with the Helpful Hardware Man" So they changed from "men" to "folks" somewhere along the line. Yup, more of a reflection of the current times. In Kaimuki the two hardware stores are Ace and City Mill. City Mill is locally based and has a much wider selection of offerings than Ace. Although Ace is a national company, they have a more defined product offering which seems to be of better quality than City Mill in some instances. The Ace workers do seem to be more helpful and knowledgeable, but not always. But I have no complaints. If they do offer what you need you can be confident that it will work. More laid back and easy going than City Mill, Lowes or Home Depot, Nationally based Kaimuki Ace Hardware has more of a feel like the smaller neighborhood Mom n pop hardware store back in da day. Decided to go cruzing today and look for Lysol spray. My friend said sometimes Hardware stores carry them hit or miss. I know it's going to be hard to find but I'll try it anyway . Didn't find the Lysol but like everywhere else lots of hand sanitizer and face masks. But to my surprise I found rubbing alcohol at this Ace Hardware in Kaimuki. Need a key? If it's something that is pretty common, you'll probably be okay coming to Ace Hardware to make a duplicate key, but if it's something out of the ordinary, may I suggest you go to a shop that specializes in locks & keys. My recent visit to Ace Hardware store up in Kaimuki was out of convenience, as I had the unfortunate experience of having my key break in my deadbolt lock at my house. Luckily for me, I was able to removed the busted key from the lock cylinder, but had to get a replacement key, and that's how I ended up at Ace Hardware. Upon walking into the store I was greeted right away, and upon presenting my house key (not the broken one) to they clerk, they put my key into this machine which appeared to scan the image of my key, he takes out my key, then he puts in the key blank to have the machine cut a new duplicate key. Service was fast & friendly, and the price for a key cut was reasonable. Later that evening I went home to test out the new key.......as unlucky as I can be, the new key was so badly cut that they key could not even slide into the lock cylinder. Aiyah! Went back to the Kaimuki Ace Hardware the next morning & explained to them my dilemma, they were apologetic, and promptly refunded my money as they told me the key blank they used to make my new duplicate key maybe wasn't the correct blank. I appreciated their honesty, and no complaints here.......the only bad about the whole experience is the time I lost going back & forth to get my key issue resolved. Upon getting my money, I ended up heading down the road, and going to Saltz Lock & Safe. Yes, I paid about a dollar more for the new spare key, but with Saltz, Garans Ball Barans the new key worked! Just the other day I received a text from a colleague instructing me to bring a new mop stick when I show up to work. Our old one with the rusted frame had finally seen its last days. Our spare mop, the one with a plastic mop stick, just doesn't clean well. I was in the Kaimuki area when I received the text and now on a mission. I wasn't really thrilled about driving to the Iwilei area to shop at either City Mill, Home Depot or at Lowe's during peak traffic hours. So, my first choice was Kaimuki City Mill, where I was impressed with ample parking and on how spacious the store was. But when checking out their mop section, I found some mop sticks, spare mop heads but no frame to connect the mop head and stick. I also found some mops with plastic handles. Thanks, but no thanks. I decided to seek help and had to walk around the store to look for staff assistance. I finally came across 2 staff who were talking amongst themselves. I explained my dilemma and the male staff walked back with me to the mop section. After confirming the lack of product on their shelves, he contacted his warehouse only to realize the item was of out of stock. I was disappointed when I exited City Mill and dreaded driving to the Iwilei area during busy rush hour so I reached out to my Yelp mobile app and came across Kaimuki Ace Hardware (KAH). It was only a few blocks away from City Mill so I hopped in my car and made my way here. Ace Hardware is an American hardware retailer's cooperative (a business that is owned and run jointly by its members who share the profit) that is headquartered in Illinois. They can be found nationwide plus also operating in 60 other countries. Although the parking lot was much smaller, I easily found a parking stall and made my way in. Despite KAH is a much smaller store, I was instantly greeted by the staff at the front. When asked if I was looking for anything in particular, I replied and was escorted to that aisle. Lo and behold, KAH had the mop stick with the metal frame in stock. ***happy dance*** Next, I was going to pick up some car air fresheners but was advised they don't carry any. I ended up grabbing an extra mop head and headed to the cashier. I was grateful the cashier was more alert as I didn't think much when he rang me up but when he focused how much the mop head was, I asked him to remove that item and my bill was substantially reduced. I was going to be reimbursed but I wasn't going to waste my company's money. I really appreciated the customer service extended to me, especially going the extra mile in emphasizing the cost of the mop head before making payment. I did find KAH to be a very compact hardware store with limited supplies but in my experience, the customer service exceeded my expectations, thus well deserving of a 5-star rating from me. read more

Went in to Ace Hardware and first impression was the staff looked so unfriendly. No greetings no vibe that welcomes you into Ace. Horrible vibe. I went in to get a color matched paint because City Mills paint machine was down. Gave the Guy my paint sample and he asked me which color. ?? The Green one I replied. which side he asked again. the Green color I said again. "Im color deficiency he said in a more stern voice like I'm suppose to know that and I'm think WTH you doing mixing paint if you can't distinguish certain colors. Of course one color I got was correct the other one was totally off. Then proceeded to make lame excuses saying the smaller the paint you make (in quantity) the harder it will be to make the color. First of all I must mention that the Customer Service here is fantastic! Almost a Five Star rating, should have gotten the name of the roving Represenative. A polite and fairly knowledgeable young man. Why only a three star rating? Price and Selection are the main drivers behind a higher over all rating at this time. The selection and variety seems to be failing from days of Ace is the place. I needed a circuit breaker for my house and had to go to Home Depot to acquire one. I have to give Ace props for having a good selection of pest control. A bit pricey but found a good ant killer which I desperately needed! I like this stores location and will continue to shop here for the small items I need. Returning to acquiring that "Ace is the place" title though, is going to take some improvement! Lastly, I like the display by the register of hand held plastic toy flying propellers. Grabbed a few to play with my grandkids! Still a kid at ! EXCELLENT customer service. The staff was knowledgeable and took the time to walk me to the products I was looking for. I presented the issue I was trying to solve. They didn't have the exact obscure product I needed. However, what impressed me was that he thought for a second and showed me an alternative solution that they did carry. Try that at Home Depot and Lowe's. One girl saw me down an aisle as she was headed to the back room and asked if I need any help locating something. I saw her clock out afterward. Needed a toilet seat and a tape measure. Figured since this is the closest hardware store to me, I'd just get it here instead of driving a little further to City Mill. HUGE mistake. Person at front was great. Asked me what I needed and directed me to aisle 17 for the toilet seat and aisle 2 for the tape measure. She let me know that the tape measures were under lock and key but she would call someone to help me. It just goes straight downhill from here in regards to any sort of attempt at Customer Service. As I was on my way to get my toilet seat, I noticed an associate in Aisle 2 so stopped as she was obviously responding to the call to help me. As I stood at the top of the aisle and waited as I didn't want to startle her, I waved at her as she made eye contact with me and said "Hi, the tape measure is for me." Her response rendered me absolutely speechless as she choose to respond with "Well I'm not going to pick it out for you!" In the most condescending tone imaginable. I literally said to her "you know what, never mind." I went to get the manager and explained to him what just happened. No apology, nothing. He said that he would speak to her and could he help me. I said no because I expected her to help me and how could you possibly help me when you can't even apologize to me for your employee. I left the store and actually drove out to City Mill in Hawaii Kai where if I needed service, I know I could find it. Based on the other recent one star reviews of Kaimuki Ace Hardware and the lack of ANY sort of responses by the owners/management it appears that they just don't care. They probably don't even know how to access Yelp to read these reviews. I normally don't Yelp but I felt like other people should be aware of this and it appears I'm not the only one who has had a negative experience here and chosen to be vocal about it. Save yourself any trouble and don't go here. Drive the extra few blocks to City Mill Kaimuki or take a ride to City Mill Hawaii Kai. Believe me, it will be worth it! read more

Went to Kaimuki Ace Hardware several times. I noticed that their pricing on certain merchandise is grossly overpriced. I purchased some specialty seasoning for my Traeger wood pellet grill. I paid $11.99 for each traeger seasoning at Ace. I bought the exact same item at Pearl Harbor garden shop for $4.00 less and I found it online for $7.99 from amazon prime, and Home Depot online, same as on base. That's 33% more Ace is charging their customers. No need to rip off the customers in your neighborhood, that help keep your lights on daily. I can understand making a reasonable profit. But 33% higher priced? That's a bit much. I Will be ordering my Traeger seasoning, wood pellets, and accessories online on Amazon Prime. Free shipping to my door and pellets are $2.00 cheaper per 20# bag. I ordered 5 bags of pellets , saved $10, I also saved my time and gas $ as I didn't have to jump in my truck and drive to Ace, load pellets into a wagon then load into my truck and unload at my house. I honestly don't mind paying a bit more to buy things locally and support local businesses. But 33% more is very steep, and the convenience of having a brick and mortar store close by in your neighborhood is nice. But not worth the 33% additional markup that comes along with it. Also if you take the time to plan ahead, buying online with free shipping,, can save you a lot of money. Sorry Kaimuki Ace, I won't be coming back to your store. read more

I have to say, while this is NOT ALWAYS a common situation, I did have a reprehensible encounter with a racist old man named "Craig", which almost made me loose my Sh*t. Long story short, I came in looking for what I believe is called "security screws." Simply put, they have a odd shaped design in the head, needing it's own special shaped bit to screw and unscrew. These kind of screws are available at ALL hardware stores. I chose ACE Hardware because of the personal touch in customer service. I was verbally assaulted by Craig almost preventing me from entering further once I entered the door INSISTING "how can he help." Taken back, I decided to explain what I was looking for. Not listening to a word I said, I was dismissed after interrupting me while I was trying to explain, "we don't have that." Flabbergasted, as he stood there holding my screw I came in with hostage, as if not to give it back, I took my screw back that I brought as example and said, I will find it myself. He barked at me "there aren't any security screws here!!!!!" Not 3 minutes later, after wondering a couple of aisles down, low and behold, I FOUND THE SECURITY SCREWS!!! I also witnessed him practically tear apart the store in the aisle across the way to help someone that looked more local. This is not completely uncommon, but, does happen rarely. Most locals are so very lovely, helpful and friendly. Craig however, depending on how local you look decides how helpful and friendly he will be. He has NO business working in customer service. I was considering writing corporate, ( even though these stores are franchised) and the EEOC, when a absolutely lovely Supervisor came down the aisle asking me about my moped I parked to the side in the parking lot. I am ashamed I didn't get a better look at her name-tag, but just an absolute breath of fresh air. I told her of my experience and she apologized. "Old Dog not being able to learn new tricks or not," his behavior is absolutely unacceptable and if it was mainland, there would be absolute hell raised if someone else of a different ethnic background felt discriminated against! In the end, the two other ladies were absolutely delightful. I again am embarrassed I didn't look closer at their name tags because the supervisor and two women should be commended for their superior customer service they gave me. I will be back, I will just steer clear of "Craig" This is the year 2022, equal rights are SUCH a hot topic in the US, and are for EVERYONE, weather you don't look local enough or are all together as "Howlie" as can be. If one has money to buy something in the store, they should be treated with respect and decency. The three women in the store should be commended. "Craig" needs some sensitivity training. I'm so glad I have this place nearby. Yes, their prices are more than the bigger stores like Home Depot or Lowes BUT when you need advice or quick service it's worth the extra $$$. I can pull in, park, and pick something up all within 5 minutes. The store is small, but they do have some harder to find things. For example Orange Guard, a non toxic pest spray. They also have chicken wire and wire fencing by the foot, so I can get exactly the amount I want. Become an Ace Rewards member and you'll get coupons in the mail. They're good ones too! $5 off your purchase (no minimum purchase required) or $7 off your $20 purchase. Anyways, the convenience and great service are the selling points here. read more

If I could give this place no stars I would. This is the SECOND time we've come into this Ace Hardware and they chase us out. YES I understand that you close on a Sunday at 3pm but that is NO reason to rush the clients. I can't remember what I came here for the first time but today we came into this place to grab paint.
