The food is still great, but this store cannot handle volume, and their service leaves much to be desired. Three years ago, we ordered curbside pickup on Father's Day, and it was a disaster. After waiting outside for 30 minutes, I went inside and was informed that it would be another 30. They were slammed and many others were in the same boat. I cancelled the order, but had to call the store the next day to have a manager handle the refund. Later that year we tried pickup again, for an elementary school fundraiser, and met a similar fate; we did get our food but they were backed up and it took forever. Well, fool me thrice, shame on me--we gave them another chance this past weekend, again on Father's Day...and they haven't improved. My wife ultimately waited over 40 extra minutes for our food. The staff member said "I understand" but never apologized or offered any restitution. I'm not asking for the moon and stars, but a free dessert and some sincerity would have meant something. They have two problems to solve: first, getting real-time feedback from the store to the online app, so that the app can give accurate estimates of the wait times. And second, handling a busy situation in the store with grace and empathy. read more

First I'd like to say that I'm not a huge fan of barbecue food. My wife wanted to go here for lunch one day. This location has its own parking lot. Very convenient. The employees here were very nice and the restaurant was very clean. I was pleasantly surprised at the taste of the food. I had a combo plate of pulled pork and beef brisket. I think it really helped that they put the sauce on the side instead of drowning the meat in it, like other places. The meat was surprisingly moist and very tasty. read more

The meats are very good. However, their baked beans which used to be good I'm not good anymore. The last two times I ordered them, I might as well have just open a can of baked beans and dumped in a few shreds of brisket and barbecue sauce from a bottle. Very disappointing now. Came here last minute with my boyfriend. Everyone was so sweet once we came in and they brought our food to our table. We each got the brisket sandwich, which was delicious. There's a section where you can choose your BBQ sauce, which I thought was super cool. I had to try the mac and cheese, it did not disappoint! I wish I could eat more of it. Had a great catering experience! We ordered several pounds of pulled pork and pulled chicken and it was all a hit! The sauces were great as were the pickles and jalapeños. They even set it up for us and brought utensils, napkins, and plates. I have ordered from here may times and the food was always good. This time the pulled pork was very dry. Even adding BBQ sauce to the sandwich did not help much. So bummed the Downers Grove location closed. It was 4 miles away from home and a 9 minute drive. Today's journey north was 19 miles and nearly 45 minutes. I wanted to try their pastrami. It was fantastic and I enjoyed the new baked Mac and cheese. Cashing in some rewards made the trip seem worth it that much more. Friendly staff and everything was kept clean. The first time we stopped in they were out of almost everything except sausage. Not a great first impression and we left to find something else to eat. I was determined to get some barbecue though so we tried again. On the second visit we shared the Judge's Sampler. The chicken had a nice sweet sauce. Pulled pork was nicely cooked with a good bark. She loved the brisket, I liked it okay. The ribs were meaty and had a fantastic bark. I loved them but she wasn't as impressed because of a piece of gristle. Picky. The tater salad was pretty good and the collard greens were delicious and perfectly seasoned. They even made me homesick for the south. The cornbread was bland but perfectly baked. The place is bright and open and everyone is friendly. The tables were sticky though and she found some silverware that was still greasy. Some of the food was hot and some of it was cold, like it wasn't all cooked at the same time. Five stars for the meats, six stars for the ribs. Ten stars for the greens. Minus points for the sticky tables and dirty silverware. Another minus for not having any hot sauce on the tables. We have used them multiple times for catering. We ordered for my daughter's birthday this past weekend for 30 people and they gave us significantly less portions than anytime previously before. 750$ in food and they gave us enough meat for maybe 15 adults at best. When you pay that much for food, especially these days you expect what you pay for. We assumed they forgot half of our portions to which their manager tells us that is what we ordered and if we had paid for 5 more guests like previous years we would end up with full trays ?? (Make it make sense)like we did in previous years. We also ordered a half tray of bbq beans that was MAYBE a quarter filled. It fed maybe 10 people. They only made excuses. We personally will never be using them again. I'd suggest you don't either unless you want to order 8 emergency pizzas for your guests like we had to do. :) read more

We dined here most recently to redeem a $10 credit to my Rewards account before it expired. I encountered a glitch in my app, but a manager found a way to apply the award to our bill. Yay. I ordered a 1/2 chicken with 2 sides and my Missus ordered the Pick Two Meats--smoked turkey and crispy fried ribs--with 1 side. She was undecided about the ribs (a limited-time special), but the kitchen generously offered her a sample bone before she committed. Ten minutes after we ordered, a worker came out to inform us they had just run out of turkey. So, my Missus substituted brisket. Her Pick Two, plus a side of fries, was very good but she said the ribs (drizzled with mayo-based Alabama, or "bama" sauce) were "OK but not my favorite." The Texas toast was barely toasted at all. My 1/2 chicken was fab, crisp-skinned, smoky and juicy. My sides were baked beans with brisket and creamy slaw. The former was excellent and the latter was tangy but drippy as a Texas downpour. Mysteriously, we ended up with a side of collard greens which we did not order (but we were not charged for it). It was OK, but not my favorite. read more

When the the ribs $ pork were ready the clerk's informed me that the store was out of corn pudding, but if I wanted to wait another 15 minutes it would be ready. They sent out our sandwiches before the fries which was fine so I expected our fries to be hot, but even they were cold Upon arrival. Stopped in late on a Sunday night about an hour before close. We were vibrantly greeted by a young lady behind the counter who was not only very helpful, but friendly and not pushy with our late arrival. She walked us thru a few questions as it was our first visit and even let us sample the potato salad. We ordered a couple of chicken dishes and 4 sides (one of which was the awesome potato salad). We sampled all their sauces and liked several but landed on the original. The Swine wine was also a fav and could see that going very well on the pulled pork sandwich for an eastern Carolina style sammy if that's your thing. The chicken was melt-in-your-mouth tender with a nice smoke that didn't take away or overwhelm the chicken. I am recommending their brisket, mac and cheese and/or hush puppies. They have a variety of different BBQ sauces. I like the Memphis sweet BBQ sauce. There are other sauces that are very good (with a little heat/kick -- if this is your preference). I have been going to City BBQ in downtown Park Ridge, IL for several years now. There is parking in the rear of the restaurant (the driveway is easy to pass up as it is located next to the restaurant off Northwest Highway). Like everything else, prices have increased here, so I don't eat here as often as I used to do. I go to City BBQ whenever I have a desire (taste) for good BBQ. The brisket is melt-in-your tender. It is loaded with tons of meat (I usually remove some of the meat and give it to my dog when I get home). Beverage refills ARE FREE which I appreciate, and it is self-serve. Walk in and order at the register. Pay. Sit down. When your order is "ready" they will bring it to your table (although a few times my order was called out, and I walked up to the counter and picked it up myself). Service is fast and friendly. The ambiance is nothing spectacular. Dark, worn hardwood floors. Uncomfortable hard chairs. Loft-like ceilings. Large glass windows facing Northwest Highway. They have a ramp leading up to their door, so if you have anyone in a wheelchair it is easily accessible. I have had better BBQ elsewhere in Chicago, but since this joint is only 12 minutes away from my house, has free parking, good food and decent service, I will go here every once in a while. Many years ago, City BBQ catered a backyard BBQ party that we had. EVERYONE LOVED their food and many of them became regular customers at City BBQ. They will set up everything so you can enjoy your event without the hassle of setting it up yourself. read more

I can't find fault with the food, except for one thing: when arriving at 6 pm on multiple occasions, they've been out of some of their menu items. One day it was brisket, another day it was turkey, another day it was pulled pork AND brisket. You order at the counter and food is brought to the table, as is usual in authentic barbecue places.
