Wow was this place packed at 2:00 on a Thursday! Coming back to Raleigh from Clayton after a funeral situation, we were looking for a late lunch and this popped up on Yelp. So we stopped. It was sure hoppin' with folks ordering at the counter, lined up to receive their food and even more difficult, trying to find a place to land and eat. Friendly gals were there to take the orders and the whole staff seemed to be giving it all they had. Food: I had Pulled Chicken (Naked-minus the bun) lunch with two sides: my choice of greens with pork and green beans with bacon. Mom had Pulled Chicken on a bun with a vinegar based cole slaw (they offer a creamy one also) and the green beans. The other one in our party (who also graciously paid) got a pulled pork sandwich with fries and creamy slaw. We got everything from the counter except for the fries, which were brought to the table shortly after. Chicken was more boiled-like with onions. I love onions, so I was happy with it, although it was indeed naked without any sauce. My favorite sauce was the vinegar one. The mustard one was okay (Mom liked it on her sandwich). The sweet one I flat out hated. It tasted like it looked...like pure molasses. You like molasses, you'll like this. To each his own. The greens were good and very meaty. Green beans were the broad ones, cooked to death, but had a good flavor to them. Mom loved her vinegar slaw. Other guy liked his pork okay as long as you didn't call it barbecue as the sauce wasn't cooked into the meat. He liked his creamy slaw okay, but all of us agreed that the fries (although plentiful) were way undercooked and we threw away most of them. Just guessing that this would be a vegetarian's nightmare place! It was also very LOUD in there...almost impossible to carry on any kind of conversation. As for prices...even though I didn't pay, for lunch for the 3 of us, it was about $27. Based on the sheer volume they were doing, this is a welcome new business for Garner! read more

Wow White Oak, this place just keeps expanding.. Welcome City Barbeque, what a pleasant addition. Walked in and debated what we were going to order for too long, it is a tough life being indecisive.. Mom ordered a Brisket Sandwich with Mac & Cheese and Green Beans. Plus, Peach Cobbler with whipped cream to satisfy her sweet tooth. I ordered Pulled Pork topped with Creamy Slaw with Sweet Potato Casserole and Corn Pudding. Our food was served quickly and looked great. Favorites: Mac & Cheese was creamy, Green Beans were tasty and I enjoyed the Pulled Pork, I topped this with the original sauce. Dislikes: Sweet Potato Casserole was disappointing, the Corn Pudding tasted a bit overcooked and the Peach Cobbler had too much breading and was overpriced in my opinion, the peaches had great flavor though. I've been to the Cary City Barbecue and recently been going to the Garner location. So far, this is one of the best places for quality bbq and bang for the buck. The portions are huge and there's always so much to take home. The meat is cooked right and always hot to order. The side dishes compliments the meat very well. I love the BBQ sauce bar! One night city Barbeque ran out of the chopped pork so they offered the chopped chicken. I gave it a try and became a fan since! Great staff and customer service! Very friendly and kind. read more

First time here was for a Smoking 101 class through the Triangle Foodies group. Brisket was amazing, especially the full cut with the fat and bark. People were very knowledgeable about the product and meat. Sides were average. Except the fried okra. It was delicious. But other than those I Would probably stick to French fries as a side. Chocolate cake was a little dry but the peach cobbler was good. A lot more bread than peaches. Seemed to almost have some almond flavoring to it as well. read more

Tasty meat but way too greasy!! Personally I think flat green beans are just nasty. I think maybe it's a regional thing about choosing flat ones instead of round. Fries are WAY too greasy! As a true southerner born and raised in the south. I can assure you that this is not southern food whatsoever. I got the Judge's Sampler and the meat was lukewarm and unflavored. Everything was bland except for the collard greens. The greens were undercooked. The cornbread was not flavorful. I shouldn't have to cover the food in sauce for it to taste decent. The Mac and cheese was dry and unflavored. If you're looking for true southern food this is not the place for you. The fountain drink area was messy and nasty. The service was nothing exceptional. I don't remember the name of the dish, but it had all the meats. So good. The meal was suppose to feed 2 people, but we were about to get an extra meal out of the meat. So I had the smoked bologna. It was amazing. I have a place in my hometown that makes burnt bologna that I love and this sandwich blew it out of the water. Your reply doesn't address the issue of your lack of customer service. Waiting until 15 min before pick up and after my order was accepted almost two hours prior - to email me to say you weren't filling the order, instead of calling and attempting to assist, is very poor customer service. And not being able to connect to a human, for 12 minutes is frustrating and unheard of for a restaurant, you are not a bank....instead, why not hire someone to answer your phones? While I may only give this place 2 stars, my dog definitely gives it a 5. He ended up eating most of the food from me and my friend's meal. In my quest to try all North Carolina barbecue, I had heard positive things about City Barbecue. The only problem was that I heard these thIngs from the wrong kind of people. You see, you want barbecue recommendations from the guy who changes your oil, the girl in dirty overalls and work boots. You don't want barbecue recommendations from the lady at Pilates. You don't want barbecue suggestions from the guy who teaches holistic medicine. (As much as we love these people) And that's exactly the type who was recommending City Barbecue. Well, luck would have it that I needed to go to Cabela's and spotted CIty Barbecue like a porcine temple on a hill. But lo, God was not with me that day. For the ribs were dry and the brisket assumed the desiccated characteristics of the Desert of Paran itself. Yes, the barbecue was bad. The sides at least had the sense of decency to remain inoffensive (and bland), but the meat was downright insulting. The restaurant offers several barbecue sauces that are a welcome relief considering what you're eating, but you won't be breaking in later to find the sauce recipes either. If you are near Cabela's, City Barbecue still probably beats eating at most of the other chain restaurant nonsense, but as a barbecue restaurant it is overpriced and underperforming. read more

I've never been a big fan of BBQ, but this place changed that immediately. The setup of the place is great and ordering is easy. Simple menu. I ordered the roasted turkey sandwich... honestly, best BBQ dish I've ever had. So tender and smoky. My husband got the burnt ends; also delicious. We ordered Mac and cheese for the kids, which came in generous portions and wasn't just the usual Mac and cheese out of the box. All fairly priced. First time here at the recommendation of a coworker and I ordered the brisket and pulled pork with the macaroni and green beans for the sides. There was just the right amount of smoke flavor and I personally enjoyed the pulled pork more than the brisket but both were incredible. The smoke rings on the brisket were distinct and the "bark" on both meats were very flavorful. The chunks of fat mixed in really brought it home! I rate the quality and quantity of the food here wayyy higher than The Pit and several of my friends and family members agree with that. I got enough for two meals for less than what I pay at other restaurant and guess what? It reheated very well. The atmosphere is casual which I appreciated but note that things can get a little hectic at peak times. The lines did move quickly so that was no issue. Plenty of parking, plenty of seating inside and also had a covered outside eating, inside was very clean from floors to seat to tables, bathrooms very clean, friendly and outstanding service, and food was awesome!!! Great brisket, check. Great smoked pork, check. Great ribs, check. I got to try a sampling of some of the food here recently and it was perfectly smoked and awesome. My favorite would be the brisket, it had a great smoky flavor because they really smoke it low and slow with hickory and some how you could still taste the awesome rub they use. The pork ribs are big meaty bite off the bones ribs that don't really need sauce. The pulled pork is just that smokey pulled pork that's not overly chopped or tossed with an sauce(you can do that on your own). I picked up a sandwich for my wife before leaving and she loved it, so much so I didn't even get to try it. It's call "more cowbell" which is a brisket sandwich with grilled onions and peppers, cheese, and horseradish on a buttery roll. I'll be back for more. read more

Oh my oh my city BBQ!!! This is the best BBQ spot in town!!!! The city sampler can feed two to three people. This place will make you over eat!! I ordered the chipotle pulled rib sandwich with cheesy bacon fries. Wow. The fries are delicious. The bacon was well done just like it should be. The chipotle sandwich was on garlic bread and you get 2 of them! I only ate one because it was just a lot of food. The prices are very reasonable for the portions that you get. The potato salad is just like mom's. Super delicious. Tastes homemade. I will be going back tomorrow. Love love love!!! Went here for the first time in Raleigh a couple of weeks ago and got ribs. Came to this location today and got the pulled pork. The pulled pork was great - moist, perfectly cooked, nice crispy ends. The ribs were 50/50. Half of them were tasty but not fall-off-the-bone, and the other half were tough and gristly. They did taste good when you actually could get a good piece without gristle. Overall I'd recommend the pulled pork or brisket. I would not get the ribs again. The baked beans are phenomenal. Drawback: you're charged for each side here; you may be used to some places including 2 sides. The service was nice even though the place was quite busy. read more
