I'm not really a barbecue person, but my mother was craving BBQ, so I went along with it. I didn't order any for myself -- I just picked up a banana pudding and tasted the BBQ. From my experience, the BBQ was fair -- nothing to write home about. My mother thought it was dry and lacking sauce at first, but by the time she got to the bottom, she found the sauce (lol). We love this place; however it is different from when it first opened. They set high expectations and have not been able to get back there. I was impressed with the quality of food is not as good and their turn around time on cooking the food(which has not changed). The quality of customer service depends on the individual that is there. The dining had two families eating when before we seen it packed to the rim. It is spacious for groups. We like ordering sides and dessert. Service at the drive thru was impeccable. The young man taking my order was very patient and asked me questions respectfully. I did have to pull forward, but I didn't wait long. The food came out hot. I ordered the two meat plate. There was an up charge for the beef brisket. I also got ribs, green beans with bacon and their mac & cheese with sweet barbecue sauce. The brisket was very dry. I think it was smoked an hour or two longer than the 18 hours. It was a bit dry, maybe because it wasn't pork. I don't know. The ribs were on point, very tasty, very tender. The green beans were very flavorful, and the macaroni and cheese was good but could have used a little bit of salt and pepper or some other type of seasoning. I'll return, but I'll know not to get the brisket for sure it's not worth the four dollar up charge. This was a pick up order, placed online. Very easy process, easy to navigate & order everything you want, and pay. We pass CB all the time & this is my first time in. Very nice building on Buford Drive, across from The Exchange. On the corner, can't miss it. Easy parking!! A fair crowd at 5:30 pm on Monday, when the GA football game was in progress. I didn't notice TV's but that wasn't my focus. I walked to the counter & was happily greeted by a very sweet woman who got my order right away. I said thanks & headed home. Pics will show you what we got- I didn't get pics of everything, but you will get the idea. They got the order right, so great there!! Portions for the brisket was pretty good, but the not sloppy joe - was a little skimpy. Flavor was there for everything!!! I got the kids pulled pork & salad. I guess for a kid this is OK, but I really just needed a lite dinner. I added my own lettuce & tomato to the salad. The kids smoked turkey sandwich looked good!! No toppings or sauce on the bun- but BBQ sauce on the side. No lettuce or tomato either & I don't think that is an option... should be! Here's my issue- the sides are WAAAAAAYYYYY TOOOO SMALL for the price! Even as a side that goes with the meal, WAY too small. I honestly knocked 1 star off just for this & want to knock another off, but that is mean to do because everything else was great (slaw wasn't my favorite). See pics, try them out. The portions are just not enough for the price. My husband & son were still hungry after theirs, with the sides. Placed a pickup order this evening and it was ready before the time it was suppose to be! I was greeted as soon as I walked in, was handed my order and off I went.. great quick service!! The food OH MY GOODNESS! They know how to do bbq right! The flavor was amazing! My sandwich was packed full of pulled pork enough for 2 meals, I also ordered the 3 sides Mac&cheese, collard greens and fried okra and let me tell you everything was delicious!! The Mac was some of the best I have eaten, the okra was fried to perfection and the greens were full of flavor! I couldn't have been more pleased with my food tonight! It was all hot and fresh. The restaurant itself was very open and clean which is a plus. I hope to return here very soon! BBQ is a one trick pony but the pitmaster has to know how to ride that pony well in order to make sure the pony delivers on its end. BBQ is like that. Get the wrong temp, the wrong spices, the wrong timing, the wrong wood and it'll all have gone to the toilet. If the chicken isn't seasoned right... if the brisket has no flavor or if there's an artifical element to it and the list goes on and on. City BBQ knows how the ride the BBQ pony especially as this place looks like another version of Dickeys but I digress. The interior is well lit, spacious, and almost Chipotle-esque in the layout except for wooden table tops instead of the steal. There are phone charge ports, a long high-top seater, and the dining is spacious. The Buford location also has a drive through. The service style is that of Chipotle or Panda Express so you go and order your food, then they call your name, and you grab it yourself so there is no service to comment on. I would like for the staff to listen properly as they didn't get my name right and the lady who called me to get my food confused me with another patron but that happens with any joint which docks some points in my book. Now for the food... Like with any BBQ place, the brisket is the litmus test for if being a good place. One cannot go to a BBQ joint and not test the brisket. If the brisket isn't tender, has a deep flavor, a spicy bark, a smoke ring, and yet when you tug on it, there's a slight resistance to it but it'll also melt in your mouth, then your BBQ place isn't going to hit. City BBQ's brisket is top notch. The consistency of the meat, the deep savory flavor, juicy tenderness of each brisket slice, the peppery bite of the bark all work fantastic with each other. I also ordered their Texas sausage and it is just a divine thing to order. The sausage is smoked and yet there's this snap to the casing. The sausage meat is dense, rich, spicy, savory, fatty, and it all works in this heightened umami that you can't help but consume. With the sauces they provide, they tell you what goes well with what. According to their suggestions, Brush Fire works great with the brisket and since I had the sausage, I opted for their Sweet Swine sauce. The Brush Fire is simply your regular BBQ sauce but with added spiciness to give it a nice spicy kick which accentuates the meat of the beef (in this case, brisket). The Sweet Swine sauce is a vinegar based sauce that helped to cut the fatty nature of the two meats I was having. The vinegar based sauce definitely helped with not exhausting my palette and it in turned helped me take this late lunch down! All in all... City BBQ is just an average casual fast dining hall type place much like Chipotle or Panda Express. The only thing here is that it's BBQ but the BBQ is top notch quality which isn't a bad thing as they don't skip out on portions as well as flavor. read more

So, I was craving Bludso's and since I'm 2000 miles away, I decided to try City BBQ. I ordered the 3 piece meat and two sides combo. I had pulled chicken and brisket for the meats, with Mac n cheese, and coleslaw for the sides. The brisket, 4 pieces in total, 2 were dry and 2 were fatty, and they lacked flavor. The Mac n cheese was cheesy and the noodles were cooked perfectly but it too, had no flavor; it just tasted like plain ol noodles and cheese. Even the side of Texas toast had no flavor...no buttery gustatory flavor that I was expecting. So as I'm getting half way through my meal I began to think I had Covid because I couldn't taste anything. So I tried the banana pudding dessert to confirm my suspicion but...surprisingly I was able to taste that :D I was relieved that I didn't have Covid their food just didn't have any flavor. Overall I was disappointed in my meal. I gave one star for the banana pudding and another star for the service because my order was ready very quick! I had pretty big order, or at least that what my wallet indicated. My first taste were the green beans with bacon and they were excellent. Second I went after the beans which were also excellent. Thirdly I went after the vegetable of the south (Mac Cheese) which I would rate a 7 out of 10 (nothing to brag about). I also bought a quart of peach cobbler and a pound of brisket. Cobbler had little to no yellow fruit resembling peaches (mostly brown) and could have passed for maybe apple/peach cobbler 6 out of 10. I'm still questioning if my order was messed up. Decided to try out a different Citty BBQ then the one I usually frequent and OMG this by far was the best one yet. The employee Jaion (everyone calls him J) was absolutely amazing. He allowed my friend to sample a few items as she had never eaten at City BBQ before. She is now planning on returning on Saturday with her family. She is raving about the experience, along with the food tastes however the service that we received was 5 stars. The restaurant was clean, well lit, and the food tasted fresh and well seasoned. Although I am rarely a fan of any "chain" restaurant, I thought this may be worth a shot. I pass it often, and it's almost always packed. Tonight is no exception. I ordered brisket and turkey combo. Both were excellent, but turkey was exceptional. Wife ordered brisket sandwich. Also, very good. Staff was very friendly, and efficient. Atmosphere was not as good as the food. If you think the best barbecue is always found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. What it is , is yet another location for a barbecue chain popping up in more strip centers than nail salons... What it is, is City Barbecue, a chain we first visited (and reviewed) in Charlotte nearly eight years ago... This City Barbecue, on Buford drive in Buford must be the fifth, sixth or possibly the seventh in metro Atlanta. And while the chain hasn't franchised, there's one other thing they've also not done and that is maintaining the same high quality they showcased much earlier in Charlotte. Barbecue has to be one nof the most difficult concepts to replicate. Sonny's is a good example of how what used to be the "go to" for barbecue is now almost an after thought. 'Cue, flush with early success, is paying the price with inconsistent product as they expand beyond their capability to serve BBQ at a consistent level of quality. As someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read 137 Yelp reviews covering barbecue joints from New York City to San Diego ), Jim and Nicks, and now City Barbecue, are both company owned operations that cook (automated smokers) at each location. But both need to work some if they are going to offer the same quality (and quantity) at all their locations. It can be done. When you have a hamburger at one McDonalds, you know the next one at any other McD's will be the same; the next one is always the same as the last one, - regardless the geography. When you have pulled pork at one CB, it won't necessarily be as good (or bad) as at another of their locations. The Buford shops renders the fat from the pulled pork they serve, taking with it the smoke flavor and the moisture, and the chance to be serving really good pulled pork. The brisket was only slightly better. The serving of fries at the Atlanta Abernathy City Barbecue was far more generous than out on Buford. Doubt that sort of variance is part of the home office's plan. The ribs in Buford were tops. A great bark, nice rub and a flavor rich slathered sauce, teeing up juicy, full flavor St. Louis cut ribs - four ribs was a bargain as part of a two meat sampler. Sides? The green beans and their corn pudding were a study in contrast. The beans good, really good. The corn pudding thick pasty and dry. Why? CB had six sauces when reviewed in Charlotte in December 2016, and now five and they still insist their customers shoot squirts of each into little plastic maybe two ounce cups before deciding which you like best. Perhaps it was a newbie's mistake, but the "original" and the "sweet" tasted the same when we visited. Then there's the service: it's nonexistent once you order, pay the tab, pick-up your tray, decide on sauces, fill your glass (their tea is good) and head for the table (which, coincidentally was spotless). The complaint? You pay a premium eating out these days, even for barbecue... why aren't there folks checking if you'd like a drink refill; maybe take your tray away when your done eating, but not done talking; even sharing information about the desserts (the chocolate cake looked good, but it was at the register where we ordered; who buys dessert before they enjoy their meal? More folks might buy it after they eat if someone asked. Ask the folks at The Pit Stop BBQ just off I75 in Tifton, Georgia, how well their servers do selling desserts after folks have their meal instead of before. Looks to he Brown Shoe Gourmet that Buford's City Barbecue deserves three stars at best. OK barbecue for folks in a hurry, or maybe folks who haven't enjoyed much with which to compare. Want to do better Buford City Barbecue? Put the flavor back in your pulled pork, give some life to your brisket, serve up more of those great hand cut fries, put the sauces on the table, work on the so-called corn pudding and don't mess with the ribs. read more

I was initially a little hangry on arrival, because I had been unable to order online through their website. However, once I met the friendly employees the anger part dissipated. They helped me with everything. One of them, J, even showed me how to use their website! The food was ready in a short time and was delicious! Ribs, collards, mac and cheese, and banana pudding, far surpassed their competitors' products. Every meat I've tried has been spectacular! The half bird, pulled pork, pulled chicken and brisket have been fabulous. The bacon beans are great! If you haven't been here yet then you definitely need to try this place. I love love love their food. I think this spot just opened and we have ordered lunch from them almost every week! Honestly my absolute favorite is the brisket but everything that I have tried has been so delicious. I loved the collard greens and the green beans are also one of my favorites as well as the corn pudding...seriously they're all good. I meant to get pictures of everything but I ate it instead..my bad..it's just so yummy. The service is great even if there's a mistake they will fix it for you right away. The ribs were well seasoned and tender while the sausage was spicy and and went well with my own sweet heat sauce. But for us the stars were both of the sides. We received healthy portions of both the Cole Slaw and the Corn Pudding . The Peach Cobbler was plentiful but was a little sweet however I will try it again. read more
