First visit to Citizen Pie yesterday with the family--and we're already planning our next one. We tried four pizzas: Margherita, cheese, pepperoni, and one with pepperoni + banana peppers. Every single one was delicious. The crust is thinner on the bottom with a perfectly puffy edge, just how I like it. What really stood out was the service. The guys working were clearly proud of their craft--at one point they noticed a tiny imperfection in one of the pies (we didn't even notice!) and offered to remake it. Totally unnecessary because everything was spot on, but the care they put into their food really came through and was genuinely appreciated. I'm so happy I finally tried Citizen pie! This was a convenient location to meet up with friends over the weekend. There was ample street parking later on Saturday afternoon. It was a bit of a squeeze inside since the seating is limited. But, we also met some friendly people who helped us decide on our order. The staff were patient and welcoming as well. I tried the puttanesca while friends had the south collinwood and smoked pepperoni respectively. The pizza could be shared with a salad for light lunch but I was on my own with my anchovies. And I am really glad I stuck to my resolve on that one because it was delicious! I was doing the happy food dance in my chair- subtly of course but dancing. The south collinwood was delicious to sample and the pepperoni was also appreciated. Across the board- the crust was perfect. We topped the meal off with some Saturday afternoon shots and had a great visit all in all. Can't wait to go back. read more

I come from an Italian family of many generations. My grandparents emigrated from Naples, where pizza was invented. And my wife and I have traveled all over Italy. I grew up eating the finest pizza there is this side of the Atlantic. I LOVE good pizza. I could eat it every day. I order pizza in every establishment I visit that offers a properly made pie. And I don't mind telling you... I am VERY picky. The crust is the key to a great pizza. It must be crispy enough while maintaining a tender inside. It must be thin enough without turning into a cracker. The next critical component is the sauce. There must be a distinct tomato flavor without too much acid. And it definitely should not be sweet... No sugar. Of course the next consideration is cheese. Yes you can use parmesan and/or mozzarella but the best pizza uses Pecorino Romano. The toppings you choose are up to you. The last requirement is to cook it fast (2 or 3 minutes) in a 900 degree wood burning oven. The pizza at Citizen Pie fits this bill. They make an excellent pizza. And they do it every time. As long as you plan to stay on this side of the Atlantic this is your next best choice. read more

Yikes - what an incredible disappointment. Check out the photos. The calabrese should have had roasted garlic, Calabrian pepper, olives, and tomatoes. All we got was 3 1/2 cherry tomatoes! Compare their website image of the mushroom pizza with the thing that was delivered - seven pieces of mushroom and ten snall pieces of red onion (for an extra $2!). Pizzas were small, dinner plate size. One person could easily eat one $25 pizza, and my teenager could probably consume 5 of these before getting full. I grew up in San Francisco, have eaten authentic pizza in many places, including Italia, and this is nothing like what you should receive. Really feel ripped off and will never return. Thanks to Cleveland Pizza Week, I was able to visit Citizen Pie for the first time! For $9 (normally $14, which I think is way too expensive), I ordered the smoked pepperoni pizza to go. What really made this place unique was how FAST they make the pizza! In just 90 SECONDS, it is all ready to go! There *is* seating if you would like to enjoy your pizza there, but there is not much of it. Maybe enough for one of two families. I ended up eating my pizza at home. If you're a fatty like me, this is a personal pizza but as it is 10 inches, it is probably meant to be shared amongst two people haha! As you can see in the picture, there is a ton of cheese but not a great distribution of those cute, little pepperoni. Since these are cooked so fast, the bread is bubbly and slightly burnt but not charred in excess. I was hoping for more of a taste to the bread but it wasn't that flavorful, unfortunately. The cheese to sauce ratio was perfect. No notes there. Overall, I'm glad I got to try their pizza at a discount. I am never ever in that area of town and was surprised at how much there is to do in those couple of blocks! Next time I stop by, I'll probably get a more unique pizza (the Calabrese option looks baller!) and hope for a better distribution of toppings. read more

My son just moved to Cleveland to attend CWRU. The first thing we always look for in a new city is great pizza. Because, yes, I am a total pizza snob. So far, I've tried 4 different spots: 2 in little Italy; Citizen Pie downtown, and now this Citizen Pie. The 2 in little Italy weren't my thing... crust was too thick although the sauce at one bakery was good and the toppings at a traditional Italian restaurant were good. Citizen Pie downtown has a completely different approach to pizza than this location, and it was really darn good, but that's another review. I ordered a Margherita to be delivered to my hotel by campus. It arrived quickly and still quite warm. I opened the box, and my heart leaped with joy... traditional neopolitan style pizza. Light airy crust with just the right amount of sauce and cheese. Looks great... let's taste it. The pizza was perfect. The crust was light and airy with just the right bite and tear. The sauce was fresh and tasty and applied generously but not in a way that overwhelmed the pizza. The cheese was also liberally applied but not overdone. And it was fresh!... not ugly little strands of greasy cheese gratings that ruin the flavor of so many commercial pizzas. You can tell they value their craft at Citizen Pie. This will definitely be my go-to when I am visiting my son. Two pieces filled me up and left me feeling good about my meal and ready to get out and walk the city. This is what I want from a good pizza... not that feeling like I overdid it that comes after eating bread-heavy thick-crusted pizzas with no air or lightness to them. Citizen Pie offered a friendly, fast, tasty treat in the Waterloo Art District. I walked in on a whim as I thought I had heard of them before, and their sign spoke to me. Maybe just in my head, but it said, "Hey, John, c'mon in." To me, part of the experience of a good pizza place is how they treat the customers and how their pie reflects their store. All pies are a thin crust (while not my favorite, is something I love for a lighter bite), and each pie is quite greasy. This may not suit many people but I find this to be more homey or traditional. My only complaint would be the pies are small for the price, but rounding this up is their taste; excellent. Growing up in New Jersey, I had the best of Philly and New York-style pizzas around me, so it takes something special to get me happy about a pizza in Ohio, and this was it. read more

Found this place while looking for good pizza places from the one bite app. We don't often try pizza that's not New york style, but the whole family really liked this place. The pizza was fluffy and crunchy at the same time, which always makes pizza good, unless it's thin crust. Th3 pepperonis were awesome and were a little spicy. Other than a rogue slice at the late Roman Cafe on East Fourth Street, I had never had an honest to goodness Citizen Pie experience. Finally got the chance yesterday after a visit to Treelawn for the May Pang photo exhibit and a nice little stroll down Waterloo. Was surprised at how compact the inside is, probably seating for no more than 10 or 15. And only two employees on site. But they get the job done there. Because of a nice lunch special, we were able to sample four different pies along with a fresh arugula salad and a beverage for a fair price. Each one we got was very tasty. I got an Italian sausage with red sauce and the toppings were generous. But man, when you're talking Citizen Pie, It's In The Dough! Easily one of the lightest, yet chewiest bases around, and also crispy where you need it. It's a pizza to devour, and we all did! The two aforementioned employees also handled a customer crush while we were sitting eating, and everyone got what they wanted with a chill attitude and without a great wait. Cozy location with nice outside seating. Ordered over the phone and came it to pick it up. Service was great and food was ready in about 15 mins. We order two pizza and they were fantastic. Full of flavor and nice crust. We tried the Marinara with the arugula topping and it did not disappoint! We added sausage to the Smoked Pepperoni pizza and it stole the show. We went to order win they have listed on the menu and they were all out of both and any bottles. I got a New Yorker pizza which wasn't my favorite. I love thin crust pizzas. Those with nut allergies, beware! We ordered a pizza with meats and mushrooms, no nuts. We found a flake of pistachio on my husband's pizza. If he had eaten that he would have gone into anaphylaxis. Ay ay ay! So grateful for this delicious pizza and the Citizen Pie staff on a night when I just needed to feast! I was in CLE for a hair appt in Lakewood and I told my sister and bro-in-law that I'd get us Citizen Pie after my appt. I had found CP after checking out some pizza places via Yelp. They agreed that this seemed like a good place to check out. However, my hair appt went later than expected and I was STARVING! So starving that I accidentally called the wrong Citizen Pie! I intended to go to the one in Ohio City and drove there from Lakewood. I walked in and they didn't have my order. I gave them the number I called and they told me that it was their other location on the East Side. I could have cried. As I was walking out to head to this location, they called me just to tell me my pizzas were out of the oven. I told them what happened (that I was walking out of the Ohio City location as I had gotten confused) and they understood. About 20 mins later, I showed up and they kindly offered to put my pizzas back in the oven to warm them up. I then had to drive 30 mins after not eating for 8 hours with DELICIOUS smelling pizza in the car. Needless to say I straight up DEVOURED my pie as soon as I got to my sister's. I actually had gotten two pies and even had one full pie (6 slices) plus a slice of the Cacio e Pepe. I don't think I've ever eaten so much pizza in my life. But the great news was that this pizza was delicious. I got the Marinara and it was the perfect mix of fresh, chewy dough, tangy red sauce and a hint of garlic. Mmmm I can't stop thinking about it even now! All told, I cannot wait to go back and this will be a fan favorite for me going forward. However, the Ohio City location is much closer to my sister's in Westlake, so will prob head to that one in the future! I definitely recommend the marinara (I added cheese to mine).
