He got a traditional crust margherita pizza while I opted for the Detroit style pepperoni. Both were outstanding. He loved the sweetness of the sauce and the cheese blend. My Detroit style was a little crispier than I like, but it didn't ruin the flavor at all. The small pepperonis curled up and kept that grease right inside (yesss!). New York inspired? In Ohio? Absol-freaking-lutely!

Super personable, and the customer service matches. You can tell it's a long-running family business. I wanted to go back once more before writing this, just to be sure the first time wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. Second visit was the margherita as-is plus a New Haven pie with beef pepperoni. Both exceptional. The sauce is what really sets it off. Growing up in the South, I had no idea what good pizza was until I moved to CT. Leaving that behind was the thing I expected to miss most about Connecticut. When I arrived, the staff greeted me and seemed genuinely excited to sell their pizza and cookies. The owner was front and center and you could feel his passion for what he was doing. I got a chocolate cookie to go because they had free samples and I couldn't resist. I requested a Piggy Bird, a Chicken Club, and a Heartburner. When I got home, the pizzas smelled amazing and were still hot. My son snatched the cookie immediately. I tried all three pies and they were all delicious. The pickles and white sauce really made the chicken club unique and tasty. The owner describes it as, "the pizza I eat when I'm not in the mood for pizza". He couldn't be more right. The Piggy Bird is always incredible. It's just a great tasting pizza and was our favorite of the three. My son really likes pepperoni, so we got him the Heartburner and it was very very good. On the day I went, one of my closest friends who is from Cleveland happened to be in the area at the same time I was, so we decided to try Il Rione together before having Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream afterward. Parking was a bit tricky, as we were unable to park right in front of the restaurant, but fortunately we found a spot reasonably close, so we did not have to walk too far. When we first walked in, the first thing I noticed was the atmosphere. Not only did the restaurant smell amazing from the baking pizzas, but it was also tastefully decorated for Christmastime and cozy. We were seated immediately, and our server was attentive and helpful, making us feel welcome and even offering suggestions on their best-selling pizzas. I ended up ordering the sausage pizza, and while the pizza as a whole was outstanding, the sauce was the best I have ever had. Whatever their sauce recipe is, it was unbelievable, and it will be difficult to top that particular sauce. My friend enjoyed his pizza as well, saying it was one of the best pizzas he had ever tasted. Il Rione is one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Not sure if that's typical, but it wasn't a big deal for us that day. Finding the place, however, was its own adventure. Google Maps couldn't locate it at first, then pulled up a different location. After a little trial and error, we finally figured out the pizza shop is actually inside a grocery store. Strange setup, but we eventually found it--and honestly, it was worth both the wait and the free scavenger hunt. The pizza itself was excellent. Great ratio of ingredients, not thin crust and not deep dish--soft in the center with a crispy, crunchy edge. It does come in on the higher side at nearly $30 for a large, but considering the quality and flavor, the value is still there. A fun find with great pizza, even if the journey to get it is part of the experience.
