I really like Chuy's because it's different than the other Mexican restaurants in Town. That's because it's Tex-Mex. The restaurant itself has a fun ambiance. The decor reminds me of fun, bright, and southwestern-esque diner! The walls are full of fun images and fake palms in one dining area. I have always been pleased with the food. My usual is the custom enchiladas, with roast chicken and queso as my sauce. The queso is my favorite part of Chuy's. It's a yellow sauce with chunks of peppers. It's different than the typical Mexican queso, which is a nice change. I would definitely suggest Chuy's to friends. It's especially great during happy hour! read more

This place has been open for a little over two years now. It has had its ups and downs. The steak burrito I got tonight was not very good, almost flavorless. However the kids meals were very good and almost as large as the adult portions. Their free salsa bar is always a hit especially if you have children. It is still a mystery to me why sometimes I can order the same thing and it tastes completely delicious one time and not very good the next. After moving to Virginia we needed a taste of home.Chuys hit the spot.One thing some chains do get right is consistency and Chuys here tastes like Chuys in Austin or San Antonio. Chuy's is undoubtedly the best Tex Mex restaurant near me. It is also the the only Tex Mex restaurant near me. With 6 Mexican restaurants in the area Chuy's offers a twist to the traditional Mexican dishes that they don't offer, fresh ingredients. You can actually watch them make their flour tortillas from scratch. I could drink their salsa and the jalapeño dip is very addictive! They do it right! They use skirt steak for their fajitas when the Mexican restaurants in the area say they use skirt steak but clearly do not! The only negative thing for me is I do not care for their red sauce. I know I know...it's a chain. But if you don't go to a chain every once in a while they will leave...ie Chammps. So I took the family to Chuy's for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. Since it's still new, the wait was around 30 mins but I didn't mind. The server we had (Keegan) was very pleasant, and his service was great. I ordered a margarita, and my wife had a frozen sangria which both had tons of flavor and were awesome. I ordered the shrimp Baja tacos and the were outstanding. The shrimp were fried and could have easily been an entree on their own. The red cabbage slaw was great as well. The crown jewel of Chuy's is the creamy jalapeño sauce, which has to be what God uses to dip his chips on. There was a little of the sauce in the taco and it was devine. Again...I know it's a chain...but this one is worth a visit. Since there is no decent texmex in #RVA, this was long overdue. And it's in midlothian, near my house. read more

Short review: Spend your money somewhere else. Long Review: Okay... my friends and I went here only because our favorite Mexican place was closed due to the holiday. He made our time there fun and kept us laughing. However, when we first got there the seating staff was extremely rude. She asked how many was in our party and that was it. Anyway the waiter told us to go "brave the nacho bar" and now we know why. It look like the cheese and meat had been sitting there since yesterday. The meat was hard and the cheese had a film over it and was cold. We all ordered the tacos and were hopeful this would better our experience. It didn't. This place has a great atmosphere, clean, well decorated, great theming. So having a step up on cleanliness and décor overshadows average tex-mex. The salsa is watery and tastes like limes more than actually salsa. The chips are thin and translucent. I got the vegetarian enchilada. Just don't. The blue corn tortillas they use are not edible. Almost impossible to scarf it down. The rice just tastes like spices. Actually, nothing on the plate had a distinct flavor. It all just tasted like the same spices. My partner got the nachos. I really want to like Chuy's. I really do, but every time I go there I am underwhelmed and always regret my decision. It's also way too much for an old guy like me to try to eat, but it always left me unsatisfied. Last night I tried the taco and enchilada combo. It was pretty sparse. A regular ground beef taco and a cheese enchilada with rice and refried beans. The taco was essentially tasteless unless you put some of the salsa they give you with the chips - but beware - that salsa is hot (as in HOT), so go easy on it unless you have an asbestos lined stomach. The enchilada was pretty good and the sauce for it was good. So, bottom line, I probably won't be going back to Chuy's again. Okay personally, I love their chips and jalapeno ranch dip. That's kind of where the love ends. I've never had a great server, just at par. The food isn't anything to write home about. A group of us went tonight. My friend got a taco salad. After 3 bites, not one but two ants crawled out of the lettuce. Not little ants either. Spoke to management and said they get their produce from a 3rd party vendor. Okay, I also work in the service industry and while that may be true, we WASH our produce. The restaurant is always clean and the service is impeccable. She had Panchos with ground beef and I tried the Tuesday special (Love Me Tinder Soft Tacos). I really didn't know what to expect, since I've never had chicken tinders on a taco. But it was a real treat. The tenders were seasoned wonderfully and the toppings were great. It made for a nice lunch. Of coarse the chips and sausage was great (always is). If you've never tried Chuy's, do yourself a favor and give it a try. My family and I stopped by Chuy's on a Friday evening around 6:30pm for our reservation. I did not realize how busy the place gets. Our table wasn't ready until another 15 minutes. When we were finally seated, our server greeted us several minutes later. Not long after that, we received our drinks. I ordered a frozen margarita: 1/2 strawberry, 1/2 lime and it was pretty good. It was quite long until we finally got to order food. We seemed to have kept the hunger at bay with the chips and salsa. We also had an order of guacamole which was good, but I could do without the lettuce that was mixed in it. For my entree, I ordered 2 crispy fish tacos and one bean enchilada for my daughter. All of the food for our party of 10 took a reasonable time to be delivered. The fish on my tacos looked really good, but lacking on the toppings of slaw and sauce made it overall mediocre. My daughters enchilada did not look too appetizing, it was as if it sat out a little longer than it should have under a heat lamp. However, the filling was decent. I'm certain the time and day plays into this, but don't expect really fast service and food to be brought out like local Mexican restaurants around the area. The a la carte fish taco is too pricey for what was presented (almost $5). You could get fish tacos in the city at fraction of the price and it would also taste 10x better. I have eaten at Chuy's a very long time ago and my experience then was just alright. If it weren't for my family deciding to come here, I would have skipped this place. read more

Chuy's used to be a weekly thing for me. I love it. Typically I get full off the chips and the amazing salsa so for my entree, I just have a deluxe quesadilla. I've had tacos, burritos, and fajitas and all are great. If you can make it for happy hour for the nacho car, you don't really even need a meal! You can get full off that! read more

Just went here for the first time-and it was great!! The drinks were first-rate, and the home-made tortilla chips were light,crunchy and perfectly salted. I've been here twice now over the course of about 4 months and both times i have been extraordinarily happy and stuffed when leaving. The service was very friendly and fast, the food for the entire table came out at once (6 people) and was all hot, drinks never went empty, check came fast. The waitress was so nice about when one party member messed up the sauce she wanted and asked for another. Then on the way out 2 part members wanted to get shirts and the woman helping was so patient and sweet even when the part members swapped out which shirt they wanted after they payed. Went on Labor Day and was offered by hostess to sit in the bar. Noticed tons of tables had dirty dishes, the nacho cart had no quest or baskets to get chips and it took 20 minutes for someone to come get our drink order. Turns out it was the bartender and we had to wait 20 more minutes for our waitress, by then we decided to cut our losses, cash out our drinks and leave. If the bar area is too full, don't offer it. Your salsa is so very delicious and fresh, and I always eat too much of it before my meal arrives. But every time I come here, something goes wrong with our order. Good consistent food. I've tried about everything on the menu and have never been disappointed by anything. The salsa and chips are addictive and the creamy jalapeno sauce is on point. Have it with chips, pour it on your food, or just eat it with a spoon. We love that they are connected with the local elementary schools and celebrate honor roll students with a free kids meal.
