It's Taco Tuesday and I'm starving. As I pull into the parking lot I am feeling festive. There is plenty of parking and large groups can be accommodated. I had seen the advertisement for an enchilada, taco with rice and beans for $5.99. This special is no longer going on. I still ordered it along with a tall mug of Tamarindo. They were very accommodating when we made a reservation for a large group for our team after a tournament. The food was alright, not the absolute best but I definitely ate all of it. Who's been hiding this place? My son took me here for Mother's Day because this mamacita loves Mexican food. I got the Carnitas Bowl. HUGE portion; at least 2 if not 3 meals for me. I had been told that their carnitas in and on anything was their calling card. Agreed and gold leaf at that! Paired with a perfectly concocted Paloma in a special ceramic mug with Tajin powder on the rim...so yummy. Prices were comparable to other similar restaurants. I ordered takeout birria tacos. They're listed under quesadillas on their menu. It came with three tacos that had a lot of meat in them which I appreciated. It came with consommé, black beans, red salsa, and salsa verde on the side as well as a bag of chips. The two salsas had lots of flavor and were delicious. The black beans and consommé didn't have much flavor at all which was disappointing. The consommé had no spice to it and was very oily. The meat in the tacos didn't have much flavor either, but the meat was very tender and plentiful. I don't think I'd order this dish again, but would be willing to try something else. read more

Ordered delivery and I got the Taquitos Mexicanos which includes 2 shredded chicken and 2 shredded beef. It was tasty but as you can see in the photo, very dry and no toppings. I asked for some extra salsa for that exact reason but didn't receive it. They put one small cup of salsa in the order for two separate meals. Today was the end of an era. I've been coming to this restaurant and location for around 20 years now and I'll never come back again. I placed a pick-up order of enchiladas with rice and beans, a drink, and a side of chips with white sauce which came to around 23 bucks with tip. My husband wanted chips and queso and let me know after I placed my online order...so I order this in the restaurant. I was charged 17 dollars for a "medium" or 8 oz container of queso and a large bag of chips. I misheard the guy as he was ringing up the order and this was my fault-- I signed the receipt that wasn't itemized because I thought I heard "7 dollars". I walked out to my car, got a bank alert on my phone for the amount, and returned to ask about the charge again. The guy and his manager looked me dead in the eye and reiterated that was the right price and then printed me an itemized receipt (10.50 for the tiny queso and 4.99 dollars for the bag of chips). I'd say this was just a 'me' problem but two girls were waiting to be seated and walked out with me because THEY were shocked at what I was just charged. I understand it's difficult times for restaurants in the city of Richmond but c'mon....this was ridiculous. How was a meal with chips, dip, and drink comparable to a bag of chips and queso? Bright fiesta colors, cheerful setting and a fun atmosphere. As soon as we sat in our booth, we were greeted with chips and salsa from a pleasant server. We ordered quesadillas, the chicken and mushroom one was full of shredded chicken in a tasty sauce, sautéed mushrooms and cheese. Mine was a plain cheese quesadilla and it was a tad greasy and I like them more browned. They offer tableside guacamole service, $1.00 tacos on Mondays, and happy hour specials. My boyfriend and I went here for dinner. Masks are optional. It wasn't very busy. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly! We sat down and received warm chips and salsa prettt quickly. It didn't take long for our waiter to bring us drinks or our food either. I ordered the enchilada don lupe (2 potato and 2 cheese). It was really yummy! I had never had a potato enchilada. Although I was under the impression that it would be mixed with onions and peppers? Maybe I'm recalling the menu incorrectly. I wish I had more tomatoes with the meal but it was good. This place was Great. I had no desire to boil another chicken so I looked around and found some Chirzo and Enchiladas. Ordered a pick up, payed my bill and stopped in and I regret not staying. It was very clean. Well lite and everyone was cleaning. If the dinning room looked this nice I can only guess how very clean the kitchen is. Price is affordable, menu was easy to read and by reading the eyes of those that worked there, they were all smiling under their masks. I am coming back and bringing my wife. I don't know why it has been ages since I have been to this restaurant. We used to go there from time to time many years ago. My boyfriend went to eat lunch here one day and he came back bragging about how great their original tacos were. So we have checked this place out together a few times and the food is pretty good and the service is pretty good too. I was a little bit skeptical to order a margarita here, if you've read any of my older reviews I am very fond of what is known to be a "blackjack Margarita" from a different restaurant. However the last time I went to that specific restaurant they didn't even know what I was talking about when I ordered one. I digress. So I decided on a Thursday evening to order just a plain regular traditional frozen margarita, nothing fancy. It came out and was an odd color green, I was very very skeptical. Oh my it is a game changer. Probably the best margarita that I have ever had. I was not aware that Thursday nights they have Margarita specials, it was under $4. Boom! I can't wait to go back for Margarita Thursday and order a jumbo margarita, I think they may even have something similar to a blackjack Margarita on their menu. I also think I'm going to really enjoy trying some of the different items they have on the menu. I can add the Original Mexican Restaurant to a very short list of good Mexican food restaurants I have tasted east of the Mississippi. I walked in and was quickly seated to a table by a host. The waiter brought out these fabulous chips and salsa. The salsa is not as thick as I personally would like, but it was full of tomatoes, green peppers, and red peppers, which is my fancy. I decided to order the guacamole dip. I was not expecting the portion size to be so small especially compared to the price, but it was very good, creamy, and thick. For my meal I ordered a soft chicken taco, chicken enchilada, and rice and beans. Everything flowed together very well and was full of flavor. The chicken was not too greasy or runny and the cheese in the enchilada and beans was just exquisite! Everything was very fresh and authentic. The service was on point as well with both the host and waiter helping me. I got to practice my Spanish as the host's English was not the best. He was very sweet though and let me practice--which I needed to do. (Smile). The host and the waitress allowed me to sit and watch the Rio games. To say I was underwhelmed is an understatement. I was weaned on Mexican restaurants in the Central Valley of California. Rich sauces with depth, bold (and spicy) flavors were a mainstay. I'm not talking expensive, but just good. I was recently in Dallas and was blown away by the food in a simple place that we wandered by. The Original Mexican Restaurant is none of the above. I often try a combo of a taco, Chile Relleno, and enchilada. The taco was nondescript - ground beef and some lettuce with a bit of tomato. The Relleno was stuffed with beef (same beef that was in the taco) and the cheese enchilada was served in a small corn shell that was presented looking like a quesadilla (flipped in half) . I'm not sure what the mystery sauce was covering the enchilada, but it had no flavor and could not rescue the halved corn shell with cheese. The dinner came with chips and salsa. The chips were ok, but the salsa tasted like a generic food service option. How about fire roasting the tomatoes, peppers and adding some legit heat? My neighborhood restaurant in Maryland made fire roasted salsa and rocked it. read more

Mexico's is a Richmond institution, especially if you went to college in the area. It's a fun atmosphere, great food, and incredibly affordable. They have specials on certain days of the week, such as $1 hard taco Mondays and $5.99 jumbo margarita Thursdays (bring a designated driver!). From sizzling fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, and a wide selection of vegetarian options, the food is fresh, fast, and delicious, and the portions are enormous. Dinner entrees average around $10 each, and you can easily make a feast out of a la carte options if you can't decide on just one. Soft shell tacos or the enormous Burrito California smothered in queso and served with a mountain of Spanish rice and refried beans are my go-to. The waitstaff is always very friendly and attentive, refilling drinks and providing more free hot chips and spicy salsa without you even needing to ask. They also handle large parties very well, allowing you to split the check any way that works for the group up at the front register. They also offer take out and delivery. read more

The servers were okay not overly friendly. We ordered Arroz con Pollo. The meat was a little bit chewy (a bit old) and it did not came with melted cheese as menu described.
