It's rare to find a "Mexican " food place that actually serves Mexican food, as opposed to a mixture of TexMex, El Salvador, Honduran etc. Rico's serves authentic dishes. Their molé sauce is extraordinary - a dark chocolate base with the herbs and spices typical to Northern Mexico cuisine. I had Carne al la Mexicana which was spicy and delicious. We ordered delivery on their website, presumably delivered by someone who works for them as it wasn't doordash, GrubHub, etc Delivery was relatively fast, but by the time we got the food it was COLD. Not hot, not warm, not lukewarm, cold. Like it had been sitting out for a long time. My burrito Rico was bad. It was all soggy from cold cheese dip, it barely had any ground beef or chorizo in it, they didn't bother to look at my request for no sour cream, it was just call cold cheese, soggy tortilla, and sauce. My wife's chinichangas were "edible," she said. It was also cold, but at least tasted better. Also, their menu on their website does not match their website on their online ordering portal. Will forever and always be my favorite local mexican restaurant. The queso is to DIE for, and the salsa is so yummy. The salsa comes in its own container, so you can keep replenishing the bowl as you dine. They give a great amount of thick, salty, tortilla chips, and are quick to refill you with more warm, fresh ones as you run out. I am a big fan of the grilled chicken soft taco, but the chimichangas are wonderful in-house. The chimichangas are not my favorite for takeout, just because the queso can tip it to the soggy side by the time it makes it back to the house. Similarly, the nachos are wonderful fresh, but not the best for takeout. I'm also a big fan of the street tacos, but can be on the dry side, so definitely make sure to add a side of crema or queso to pair with it. The staff are very friendly and efficient, but on the quiet side. This establishment is family-friendly, not too loud, and a wonderful place for people of all ages to dine. The takeout is always prepared quickly and accurately, but make sure to check that all sauces are included (sometimes we've ordered extra salsa and we've only gotten the original order of salsa). read more

Food is okay but we ordered fries as a side and my pet peeve is when people toss the ketchup packets on top of my fries. I especially don't like it when it includes someone elses straw paper. This means they must collect the unused ketchup packets off the tables during cleanup and place in a container and just grab a handful and plop them on your fries. It seems when they clean up tables they grab up anything unused and grabbed up someones straw paper with the packets and that is unsanitary and against health code. I hope they don't save unused or full salsa cups to re-serve to others. read more

This place is definitely a no-go for me. Their white sauce has a really off taste to it compared to other restaurants, oh, and yhey charge you for it. And the guac is so salty. What really got me was we asked for some limes, and the waiter picked them up with his bare hands from the bar and put them in a glass. Their pulled chicken is straight from a can, and they don't season it. This could be a really nice restaurant if they put a little effort into it. If people just go here for the margaritas then just stick to that and don't waste your money on the food read more

The most noticeable quality about this restaurant is that the food lacks nuance. It is not particularly fresh or inventive or seasoned. Rico's is pretty standard, heavy, Mexican fare that is smothered in sauce and cheese. Chips were not hot. Cheese dip was thin and bland. Salsa required added hot sauce because is is extremely mild. Pick de Gallo that came with taco order is a bit sad: unripe tomatoes and very little flavor. The best thing amongst all that we ordered was the chile rellano that came with the combo. If I were to return, I would order it a la carte. It is stuffed with cheese, the skin is removed, and the coating is eggy and light. It is quite good. The service is pretty standard. The drinks were kept refreshed. Pepsi products on the fountain with bottled Mexican Coke and other bottled Mexican sodas. Full bar with drink specials. read more

Ate here for lunch at 12 noon with 6 family members. Restaurant was very slow of business. Service was quick. Restaurant is clean inside and out. I was splitting a lunch entree with another family member and told the waiter. He brought me a dinner portion. We reminded him we were splitting the lunch portion and he said that's not what we ordered. But everyone at the table said that's exactly what I ordered. He replaced it. He took my cup to get me a refill and forgot to bring it back to me. I found him and asked for my drunk back. Usually none of this type of things happen. The food was all very good. read more

I went there last night with my handsome guy :) It was my first time but I greatly appreciated the care they take with seating during the pandemic. Good social distancing and the Bar is fenced off so no one can sit there. That is actually a good idea imo and I've seen it at a friend's bar/restaurant also. The service was good, however, my guy mentioned that it is usually faster---it could be because we saw many phone orders brought out for carry out. We ordered: I order pork chops dish called Cuatitas and loved how the pork chops were done, with a so tasty thin crisp outside to them and tender inside but well cooked. I had a side of refried beans and guac, and a spicy tomato/onion/jalapeno salsa. Hot stuff! :) but good...as time went on, i had the nicest slow-heat from that and it went reallly nicely with everything else on my plate. My date had the 3 tacos and the way they were laid out looked so appealing...there was the stuffing to them but with a lovely thin layer of fresh-chopped cilantro and a lime wedge to spritz all that with if you like. I would definitely return, and the staff were very nice, parking is very easy as it is in the Publix lot with good lighting. read more

We've been getting takeout from Rico's for a while now and I had to give them an updated shout out. Definitely try this place!! Hubby likes the arroz con pollo or loco pollo or even pollo #57. I've had lots of their menu items and have never been disappointed. Always more than I can eat. I like their rice as it has flavor but isn't too heavy or in your face. The cheese dip is yummy. Tonight I got the quesadilla. I wanted something smaller and normally a quesadilla from anywhere is a lighter item. Well think again! I got it with chicken and upgraded to fajita style (for 60 cents). It could feed 2-3 people for dinner. Full of flavor and oh so good. Wish I took a picture so you could understand. We go here fairly frequently with no complaints . Yesterday was a different story . A server we had never seen before ( it's always one of two people) put down the menus and pretty much expected us to order right then . He had the personality of a guard in a maximum security prison . Yikes ! I saw him do the same think to a table with 6 kids who came in a little later . He did get a TINY bit friendlier towards the end . Maybe thinking about the tip , I can't say. Anyway the food was not very good either . I got the same thing I got last week and I raved about it then . This time it was so so . My spouse's food was not good . The chili relleno had probably as much breading on it as chili . I wish I'd taken a photo of my burnt fajitas combo, but I couldn't. My phone died and I was left attempting to eat charred chicken and beef with the veggies. My son wouldn't even eat the chicken I gave him from my meal. Not sure if they were short staffed or what but we waited 30 minutes for food. That's unheard of at any Mexican spot! They usually have the food cranking out within 5-10 minutes of ordering, even during lunch or dinner rush. Must've been an off night. Our server was nice and attentive, but the food was just awful. After reading the reviews we decided to try this place out. I would say you should try it if you are in the mood for some good Mexican restaurant. I like eating out and Mexican places and I love margaritas. I got a combination platter. There were 4 items but no rice and beans. Some of the combos had the rice and beans but not the one I got. There was a lot of food and it wasn't to expensive. We also got the carnitas dinner. That plate was a lot of food. I thought the meat was a little dry but it wasn't bad. They had a few different sized margaritas. The one I got was 27 ounces I think. But I really wanted to get the big one that was like 60 ounces. I guess the don't do pitchers but that seems to close enough. Oh and don't forget to get the fried ice cream. Always a must have. read more

They have Monday $1 Tacos. Which is a great deal! My favorite is the fried chicken chimichangas. There is no doubt that this place has cornered the market on Monday night one dollar tacos. I think half of the southside of Chesterfield County was here by 530. So if I could add a tip from the beginning be here by 5 o'clock at the latest. They do serve the standard chips and salsa as most of the Mexican restaurants do while you're waiting for your food. This salsa does seem to be made from scratch but is just missing something. So yes my kids and I got the dollar tacos tonight. They just seem to be missing some kind of flavor. They are very plain, I added salsa, jalapeños, and sour cream, and they still just didn't taste like much. For the price I can't complain much, but they are not my fave by any means. Rico's sits on the corner of a strip mall and as with all buildings of this ilk, the front of Rico's was devoid of appealing aesthetics. Fortunately, that didn't stop us from entering. The establishment is broken into three parts, entry, restaurant and bar. The seating area wasn't as Mexican gaudy as other Richmond Mexican restaurants, not that that makes any difference. Upon seating, the chips were promptly delivered to our table. The salsa was a little more picante than you typically find around here. I wouldn't rate it the best I've had, but it wasn't bad. For the main course, my wife had a steak quesadilla, my son the macaroni & cheese, and I the Burrito Grande. When the food arrived, our jaws dropped when we saw the size of the portions! My Burrito filled a dinner plate and was a good 3 inches thick. Like most other places in Richmond, it was topped in cheese, but unlike most place places in Richmond, the cheese had some flavor, as did the rest of the burrito. This giant had steak, chicken and shrimp inside of it, along with tomato, onions and a sauce unlike any I've ever had, anywhere. On the side was rice and refried beans, as well as a small salad that included a good portion of a tasty homemade guacamole. My wife said that she has not had a better quesadilla, period! That they used latin spices in its development and similar to mine was more than amply filled with meat. My son's mac and cheese was the typical kraft variety, which he likes, but also was a larger portion than is typically served. The three meals and two sodas came in at just a few cents above 30 dollars. So here's how it was rated. One star for service, which was good, two stars for the quality of the food (losing a bit for the ok, but nothing special chips and salsa) and 1 star for the price, which we thought was exceptional based on the quality and quantity of food. This has become our new favorite Mexican, far outpacing all the others we've visited. read more

After our long drive back to Richmond from Chincoteague we wanted something other than uninspired seafood. Mexican sounded good and a search of reviews turned up Rico's. We started out with salsa that matched our taste. This was an excellent cooked style with good salt, mild heat, no cumin, modest onion and nice herbs of oregano and cilantro. The oregano was not over done and the whole thing was well balanced, not too sweet, not too tart. My standard go-to of huevos con chorizo were simply excellent. The chorizo was well flavored and was not the annoying commercial crap that you see in the plastic tubes in the markets. I had excellent warm, soft corn tortillas and chiles torreados that were grilled well and were flavorful, sweet and piquant. This was accompanied by very good creamy home style beans and pretty standard Mexican rice. Ms T and Aunt Annie both had enchilada plates. Unfortunately they use the bad processed Mesican cheese food goo here, as do so many places. The red enchilada sauce was totally different than what I expect. It was very light, almost translucent with cinnamon. It was sort of tomatoey tangy. It actually looks like sweet and sour sauce. It is not red chile enchilada sauce. There was a huge chicken serving atop the cheese enchiladas. It was properly done, moist and with appropriate salt. Our server was a peach. This is an above average place and like so many such places, one needs to find the things at which they excel. I would eat the huevos con chorizo any day. I would avoid cheese here until they can be convinced to find another supplier. I would try green sauce before I ordered the strange red sauce that we had on the enchiladas again. read more
