I found myself here after looking and looking for something to eat. There wasn't really anything on the menu I was craving, but I got the shrimp tacos (3) and two pupusas. The shrimp tacos were listed for $10.95 and they said that was a mistake and charged me $14.95, saying the menu hadn't yet been updated. Well damn. I wanted to get food for my mom to take to go, and what I wanted, they said they didn't have it anymore. Again, the menu wasn't updated. I ended up getting steak, which came with rice and beans with a small salad with avocado. The chicken version was $11.95. The steak version was $15.95. The pupusas were great. Excellent even. The tacos were just okay. They made them like fajitas with peppers and onions. My mom crushed the steak, and I have to say it was a very generous portion. All in all, it was okay. The ladies cooking behind the counter seem like they're the ones in control and could be your aunties. Basic decor. Nothing to write home about. But it looks like they have a decent business. Very good authentic food. Man, oh man. One time, I ordered the tacos. Doesn't dissapoint. Another time, I went ahead to get the Sopes. The service came by 20 minutes later. I can see why it took so long! The Frijoles, carne de lengua, lettuce, cheese, and this sauce? blended so well together!!! When I was finished, I licked my fingers. The only reason as to why I am giving it 4 stars is because it took so long my bevrage was half done by the time the food arrived. Today my son was hankering some Churros, and unfortunately unlike his mama he is not multilingual (not that it should matter, but it does help). He asked a question regarding his order, and apparently his timing was off. The woman he spoke with appeared to be bothered by him interrupting whatever she was doing. The place was empty, and by her behavior it appears she wants to keep it that way. The Churros were not up to par, nor as she described them to be prepared (cream inside). Read some awesome reviews on Facebook, decided to give this place a try. IMPRESSIVE! Ordered the Caldo de Res (Beef Soup) and steak tacos. The soup has beef shank/corn/carrot/cabbage/chayote/potato. Cilantro/Lime/onion/rice/tortillas on the side. With that many healthy ingredients, delicious is an understatement. Also comes with hot sauce to get the heat going. I want the aroma of Shelly's mole sauce to linger in my kitchen. Her pollo mole is so flavorful. The chicken is stewed and marinated to perfection; it is just falling off the bone. I wrapped the meat in a homemade tortilla and refried beans ---wow! I also ordered a chile relleno and it was not like any of the sad, scrawny versions I have tried in other Latina restaurants. It was a hearty pepper, stuffed with queso, breaded and well fried with a thick sauce of finely chopped vegetables. Shelly's serves up some fantastic Mexican cuisine with substantial flavor and quantity for the money. We came here a couple of weeks ago for a weekend breakfast/brunch. First to arrive, we were seated promptly and given drinks. We ordered several items. I had the chilaquiles with steak -- absolutely divine! Quantity was amazing, and far more than I should have had at one sitting...but so good that I had to finish it! I also ordered a couple of pupusas that were equally tasty and made fresh to order. She had the sopes that were plain with beans, lettuce, and cheese. Very tasty as well. Refill on my coffee was nonexistent, but something I could look past. The pupusas are so good!! Crispy on the outside from the grill and the inside was filled with savory fillings that was perfectly seasoned. I got three pupusas, 2 pork and cheese and one bean and cheese. It also comes with a side of spicy pickled cabbage, it's very spicy. I washed that all down with some horchata and it was a perfect meal for $7 and some change. They have $1 tacos on Tuesday and Thursday I believe and a deal on pupusas on wednesdays. When I moved to Richmond from Phoenix, I did not expect to find anything even remotely Hispanic in the cuisine. After a family recommendation, I ordered delivery through a third-party app, and braced myself for disappointment. WELL EXCUSE ME! This place is AMAZING. Their pupusas are some of the best I have ever eaten. Their guacamole is so fresh and the portion is gigantic. Each time I've ordered since, I've tried to fit something new into our order and have never been disappointed. Their horchata makes me homesick! As a general rule, if you want good ethnic food, find out where the people of that ethnicity are eating. Shelly's fits into that category. This is a Spanish/Mexican type restaurant that is about authentic as it gets. Even the menus are not in English! I often go there to take advantage of taco Tuesdays, but often find myself wondering off of the taco part of the menu. If you go for the Tuesday special, you can get out of there with a really good lunch for less than six dollars. The food has a delicious taste and is definitely not the Americanized version of Hispanic food. I strongly recommend any of the pork dishes, and you can't go wrong with the sides. I have frequent many small Restaurants around Richmond, and to my much surprise, I was greeted by the Lady who does the cooking. She use to work at another Mexican Restaurant where I frequent many times on W. Broad St. I felt like I was having a Homecoming.... I ordered 3 Tacos with the Corn Tortillas, which I like more as they have MORE flavor... I had a Chicken, Beef and Pork Taco.... When the plate came out, it was NOT just 3 Tacos.... It has Spanish Rice and Beans on the plate. Plus the Tacos had Avocados which you do not see too often. AND they bought me out Fresh Homemade Chips and Salsa.... All of this for under $10. What a great deal and the food was excellent and cooked to perfection. AND, I left FULL! In fact, I told a friend of mine about Shelly's and we are heading back there today for lunch as the food is THAT good. So, if you get a chance, drop in and try their food. This place has been open a week and a day. I had a pork burrito and a cheese pupusa and was stuffed. All the food seems homemade. The pupusa was nice and cheesy, and grilled. The burrito was huge. I was late for lunch and very hungery and it totally filled me up. The decor and signs are totally handmade. They have tables and a counter with stools. I personally like the counter option when I eat alone. Super fast service. I haven't talked about the food much. It was hot and tasty. I think if I had gotten something else I might be in a better position to judge. It was at least as good as Chipolte and about the lower price. I felt good enough about it ton think I'd come back when iI was not starving and rushed and be more adventurous. So far so good. Nine bucks for lunch before tip. I No beer just sodas. Was searching for a quick lunch before leaving on a train across the street and found Shelly's online. It was crowded, smelled amazing, and the menu was in Spanish so I knew I was in good hands. I got a pupusas which was chessy and gooey , the down side was the salsa which was runny and watery . The pastor huaraches which was like a mexican flatbread was HUGE and I could only eat half of it. Everything is authentic, hand made and delicious. Check out the well worn tortilla press behind the counter. Everything is reasonably priced with huge portions. I've been here twice so far and Shelly herself has been here everytime! Cooking, bringing food, checking on you. She's great, always with a warm welcoming smile and a "Holà" when you walk in.
