First impression, it's a family owned business and you could tell regulars come here a lot. Service was quick and everyone was friendly. We ordered horchata, Mexican cola, shrimp taco, beef head (cabeza) taco, and carne asada tacos. Horchata: solid option but it is a small cup with no refills. Mexican cola: honestly surprised they had it since I haven't been able to find it anywhere. A nice richer, nutty flavor Shrimp taco: AMAZING option. A lot of shrimp and avocado. Taco Tuesday at its finest! Mimi and I ventured on a school night to @lacabana_restaurant near Lakeside and it did not disappoint! Cute little vibe with decor to match! We were greeted with smiles as we entered and sat at a table of our choosing, cozy and gives a very welcoming vibe! Our waitress was friendly and allowed us time to look thru the options. We ordered shrimp (2.8/5), carnitas (5/5) and steak (3.9/5) and Mimi opted for chicken (4.5/5) instead of the carnitas and we shared the beans and rice (5/5). All the tacos were plentiful and flavorful but my favorite was the carnitas (Mimi favored the chicken but agreed the carnitas was it) and the corn tortillas were so fresh and warm. The rice and beans also very authentic and flavorful and the rice was fluffy too, both were excellent! Look at the menu, you get the chance to eat things that you've only seen on the Food Network or if you were in an hispanic country. We also had a taco salad. Lovely and crispy. The bottom layer was some hot red sauce (both in heat and nicely spiced - so delish, not killer) - rice, shredded cheese, steak bits (chix or shrimp is also an option) iceberg lettuce (not uniformly shredded), guac, sour cream, few diced tomatoes and a bit more shredded cheese (mostly yellow - assume cheddar but to little to tell) Bottom line. The taco salad was awesome - get a fork-ful of it all. All of the flavors blended. We loved that the steak was charred but still tender. Tiny diced bites of diced steak, but it was good! We would have like a medium cook, yet charred - but even fully cooked, they know how to slice the steak, so it was not chewy. After you eat here.... I almost hate writing this review. Anthony Bourdain used to bemoan bringing media attention to tiny, local restaurants off the beaten path, knowing tourists would soon flock there and possibly change the experience. I feel the same way about La cabaña. I will personally keep this place in business if I have to, and fewer customers means more tacos for me, right? This unassuming, hole-in-the-wall eatery is the real deal when it comes to authentic Mexican street food. It looks a bit like a cafeteria inside, with only a few tables and a counter in front of the open kitchen. If you want to eat in, just take a seat and a server will come to you. You order takeout and pay for meals at the counter. I've never seen more than three people working at once, and often Spanish is the primary language, but food still comes out fast and there are some English descriptors on the menu. The tacos are the best I've had, no question. They don't make their own corn tortillas in house, but the meats and toppings are perfection. The lengua, carne adobada, and al pastor are my favorites, but I've had almost all of them by now and you really can't go wrong. I've also had the refried beans, Spanish rice, and housemade chips and salsa and it was all great. For between $1.25-$3.00 per taco, it's an inexpensive and incredible satisfying meal. read more

The only other taco place I would go would be taqueria panchito for their birria tacos or their al pastor but let me tell you about the CHIPS AND GUAC AND SALSA HERE!!! *drools* so hot and fresh and crunchy!!! The guac has this limey kick and it's creeeeamy!! My favs are the cabeza lengua THE BRISKETTTT and the al pastor. The plaintains are air fried??? After having tried La Cabana a couple more times, I am even more confident in giving the establishment 5 stars. My lengthy wait on my first visit had to have been a fluke of some sort as my tacos have been promptly served to me in about 5-10 minutes the last two times I've been there. I'd still check out my initial review for more details, but everything about the place is great. Amazing food, awesome staff, and an overall great experience. I will direct you to the pictures I've taken, but every time the tacos are presented beautifully, are quite filled with ingredients, and are as delicious as they look. The orange sauce (which I managed to take a picture of this time), is absolutely amazing. Between the flavor of the tacos, the comfortable atmosphere, and the price, La Cabana may very well be my favorite place in RVA to eat at, and currently holds the title of my favorite tacos anywhere. read more

Was on Staples Mill Rd, OTW to a massage therapy appointment and was self-lamenting because I was driving by a favorite Mexican food & legit taco spot that I love/d with previous owners, (original review from 2018), and more so now. I lamented because I've been on a fairly strict Keto diet, & know I can't use my 25g of allowable carbs on tortillas. Most places will not replace tortillas with lettuce because they shred them right away. I figured I'd pop-in and ask. To my delight, he was happy to accommodate. This place is generous with filling portions. Since I wasn't going to get full with the double corn tortillas they normally serve with each taco, I got 5. (Don't judge) In short order my beautiful shrimp taco, taco de chicharrón, (braised pork skin in a Chile verde), chorizo taco, and 2 lengua taco, (beef tongue. Calm down. They remove the outer skin and braise the muscle under it). All were exceptional. Very fresh, & crunchy, double iceberg lettuce was used. I also ordered a side of guacamole. Love this place. There were many happy people here either eating the day's surf & turf special, an unreal value at $11, or one of the homemade legit soups they make here. read more

Yesterday my husband and I ate at "La Cabaña". Our order was shared Guacamole/chips, two "Tacos al Pastor" each, and shared rice and beans. The guacamole was freshly made and had a good temperature, texture and flavor, but was much too salty for our tastes. The tortilla chips were thick and very over-browned -- pretty much inedible. The "Tacos al Pastor" were fair. They also had small pieces of pineapple in them which I had not had before, but which I liked. The downside to them was the soft corn tortillas which didn't have much flavor, and the pork was a little bit tough. In fact, my husband didn't care for the tortillas and actually ate the meat, with only one tortilla instead of the two which they are served with. Both the table sauces that were provided were quite good. The green one was pureed jalapeno/onion. The orange one was pureed tomatoes, peppers, onions and some spices. Both were flavorful and complimented the tacos. The orange was the "hottest". The refried beans were thin, and again were too salty, but did have a good flavor. The rice was moist and the grains were plump, and not sticky. The server seemed friendly, but it was hard for her to understand and answer questions in English, so we ordered the basics, even though we were curious about some of the other menu items. I have no problem with this at all, but am just mentioning this because you may need to know a little more about the food, without expecting the menu items to be explained and before venturing away from the tacos. The server did keep our water glasses filled, which is a plus. The napkins provided were a very poor quality. As we were paying at the counter, I noticed in the kitchen area that the soft corn tortillas come in a large plastic bag, (not house made like the great corn tortillas that are served at "Comida Casera"). Also there was a large tub of "Country Crock" margarine on the counter, as well as a jar of "Goya Adobo" seasoning. Margarine and Goya seasoning are are both "no, no's" at restaurants for me. Perhaps these all contribute to "ok" but far from great food. I doubt I'll return, because I think the food that I have had at "Comida Casera", is much better. read more

This used to be my go-to taco place, especially because of their $1.25 tacos on Wed&Fri. However, I picked up my takeout order on Friday and was surprised my order came to $20 for 6 tacos. The cashier informed me they're pausing this deal during a switch in management. I was hopeful that maybe they would just keep things as is and it was too late at this point since the food was ready so I paid and figured it can't be too bad. Every single thing has change. The green sauce was my SHIT. Even when it was spicier than usual, I suffered through it. But now it tastes like nothing really. The carnitas used to just melt in your mouth and have so much flavor it would be dripping. UPDATE La Cabana is under new ownership and I was coerced by my co-workers in to re-trying it. I wish I had pushed back and stayed sitting in my cube but to my misfortune I joined them. When we arrived we sat down and were handed menus. To my immediate dismay there were far fewer tacos available and the prices were much higher. Originally $1.50 tacos, prices jumped by nearly 67%! Additionally the vivid descriptions of what each taco had on it was gone! I was now flying blind with no translations available to help me decipher what each taco was. After ordering we requested chips and salsa "for the table." I enjoy ordering things for the table because it means I can have as much as I want without people giving me a second thought. I was devastated to hear that they no longer served chips and salsa, which seems very abnormal for a taco place. Once the tacos arrived it was about 10 minutes for my entire table of 6 to have their orders and an additional 5-7 for everyone's order to be correct. The recipes were completely different. The al pastor did not have pineapple in it. The shrimp had no avocado. Chicken tacos looked different depending on who had them. It was complete anarchy. When i bit in to my first taco I was disappointed that it did not taste 67% better. In fact, it did not taste any better than the $1.50 tacos I had known and loved. New management took a great thing and ruined it. I had awoken dreary eyed and exhausted from the labors of the week and after fifteen minutes of unsuccessfully convincing myself to take a day of PTO I drove myself to work. When I arrived I sat, surrounded by my co-workers, politely smiling so as not to be obvious that I was not paying attention to anything they were saying. I began to fantasize about the high point of my day, the hour I have from noon until 1 pm. Oftentimes I will drive to a parking lot and read, other times I will forgo my turkey sandwich, protein chips and banana and will venture out to the local Wawa. While activities over lunchtime may vary the constant in these happenings is my solitude. As I came out of my lunchtime daydream, I overheard one of my co-workers ask "are we still going for tacos today?" Now normally I revel in the fact I get an hour to myself but much to my co-workers dismay, I decided to accompany them to Tacos. Little did I know that they would change my life. After refusing to drive to the taco place I sat in the backseat contemplating if my co-workers would force me to make conversation with them or if I could simply politely enjoy my tacos in utter silence. While I was meditating on this predicament I looked out the window and saw a small unassuming building in a strip mall. There appeared to be 3 or 4 Mexican restaurants in this strip mall, all of which based on their façade would serve a side of dysentery with their tacos. My coworkers pulled in front of La Cabana and I entered. The first thing I noticed was the size. While it appeared to be small and intimate from the outside, there were a plethora of tables available to groups as large as 10 or as small as 2. There was nice décor and even a TV on the wall which would be perfect for me to stare at if I grew weary of my companies conversion. We sat ourselves, (I chose a seat at the end of the table, closest to the door so if I decided to lie and come up with an excuse to step outside I would not have far to go while feeling the judging eyes of my party.) Shortly after sitting, our waitress came by with a menu. I was pleasantly surprised to see not only was there an excellent selection of tacos, but the prices were affordable. On Fridays, tacos were as low as $1 per taco. Our waitress then came back and took our order. I appreciated the inclusive atmosphere they cultivated because she did not ridicule me for ordering the chicken taco in English. Soon after ordering our waitress came back with chips and salsa and guac which a few of my co-workers ordered. While I did not partake in them, because I refuse to be in the debt of those I work with, I can say that the general consensus around the table was that they were "good". Next our waitress came back relatively quickly with the food which was a pleasant surprise given our large party size. The tacos were delicious and I savored each one. The table was stocked with various hot sauces that I used to season my taco to my liking. Finally, we stood to pay and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they accepted credit card here. While leaving, I thought to myself that even my co-workers did not ruin this experience for me. Nestled in a shopping center off of Staples Mill near Glenside, La Cabana has a warm and comfortable vibe. Even though we were the only diners at 4 pm, our server was kind and attentive, and our food was obviously prepared with care. Definitely a great value for $1 each. They come with limes, and two sauce options, an al verde sauce and a spicier orange sauce. Service was lightning fast. The place is on the south end of a small strip mall and their sign is just a banner. It's decidedly no-frills, and pretty small. However, the staff is friendly, and the food tastes good. the fact that it was crowded and most of the patrons were speaking Spanish leads me to believe it's pretty authentic. Not quite as good as Habanero Grill, but closer to the office, and much faster service. Every other Wednesday, I like to hit the Boka Truk when it rolls through here, but this may be my new place to go on the off Wednesdays. read more

If I'm not eating tacos, I'm usually thinking about eating tacos. I might need to re-evaluate this priority in my life but for now I'll carry on. La Cabana is my new favorite taqueria in Richmond. It's just an extra perk that it's only 5 minutes from my office. When I'm at home in N. Chesterfield, I still rely on the solid Taqueria Panchito but I have plenty of taco appetite to share. La Cabana offers the full range of taco fillings, even animal parts you never thought to eat before. I've tried many of them and they've all been delicious. I am still partial to their al pastor and carne asada, topped with onions & cilantro, with a drizzle of their hot sauce. They also make a delicious horchata, which is a great beverage accompaniment to spicy food. A fresh dash of cinnamon makes it taste just right. After reading the reviews here on Yelp, I decided to try this little "Hole in the Wall" place, as this is where you can find some of the best food. It is all homemade, and not from a Franchise where they send you the food and all you have to do is cook it. La Cabana is Authentic in what they make, but authentic in how it is served and especially in taste. Since this is my 1st time here, I decided to go for the Tacos. I ordered the Birria which is a Mexican Meat stew; Bistek which is Beef Steak, and Carne Adobada which is a Spicy Pork. To my much surprise, they have a young girl who comes to your table, and takes your order. I asked for some spicy sauce as I like "Heat" with my food. So upon receiving my order, they brought out some Green sauce and a Orange Sauce. So, I tasted each, and the Green Sauce which is made with Jalapenos had a nice Heat with it but it lacked in flavor.... So I was anxious to try the Orange, and I was thinking it was probably made from Habanero Peppers... It was mild and really lacked in flavor. In fact, they botth needed some "Salt". I ordered a Coke which is from Mexico... The Care ADobada was excellent in taste, along with the Birria. The tacos are small, so you can eat a bunch. For the 3 Tacos, and drink... my bill only came to $5.50. Not bad for a good lunch. The people working there are extremely friendly, however do not ask a lot of questions unless you know how to speak Spanish. I saw many other items on the menu, and I plan to go back again soon. The food was really good, however they need to learn how to cook with a little salt which brings out the flavors in the food more when you create this wonderful dishes.
