My friends took me here for a late lunch on Thursday, and it did NOT disappoint. This might be the best place to get birria tacos--and maybe even a beer, as the restaurant is paired with a brewery. The place is beautiful, modern, spacious, and super clean. The setup is more like self-service--you order at the counter and pick up your food once your buzzer rings. But it's also a great spot to hang out, chat, enjoy happy hour, or even bring a laptop to do some work. Service was pretty standard, but the staff was kind when we asked one of the girls to take our picture. I had the 3 birria tacos (which they're known for) for $14--a great deal for such a generous portion. The tacos are packed with flavor, well-seasoned, and delicious on their own. But the birria broth is what makes this dish amazing. It's flavorful, not too heavy, and ties everything together perfectly. I can't emphasize enough how good these quesabirria tacos were. If you're in the Richmond area, I highly recommend stopping by.
Came on a Saturday at 6 and it was packed! Lots of families with little children. I ordered the Chori Pollo (chorizo, chicken, rice and cheese sauce). The chicken turned out to be chicken thighs which I am not a fan of, I wish the description mentioned that. It didn't come with much queso so I ordered an extra side. I also got a side of the birria beef and unfortunately wasn't a fan of it either. I thought it would be shredded beef but it was cubed and fatty. The flavor of it was ok. The salsas, queso, and my husband's birria tacos were really good, I'll just know not to get the chicken or birria beef again. I appreciate the Veil for having NA beer options and kombucha.
Friday afternoon it was busy with a ton of children running around the facility. A bit overwhelming. It's placed in a neighborhood and close to a park so I'm assuming that why there are so many children in the place. The upper level was closed so maybe it would be less crowded if everyone could spread out. The menu has more drinks than food options. I had the carnitas tacos. They slab a good amount of meat on the tacos however it was too much. The tortilla couldn't support. The pork had a good flavor however it was dropping grease. Which later upset my stomach. I probably won't be back simply due to the atmosphere. I prefer something more chill.
This is the food vender inside the veil brewing co. (forest hill). I ordered the 3 carne asada taco ($13) and it was ready after about 15 minutes. The ribeye steak was tender but could've used some more seasoning and a lime. Dipping the tacos into the salsa really helped add a missing flavor/sauce. Surprisingly good tacos for the cost. Food(50%): 7.6 Staff/service(25%): 7.0 Value(25%): 7.5 Overall: 7.4/10
Although they don't have an extensive menu, you can not miss trying the quesabirria tacos. This location was attached to the veil, and the interior was clean and sleek vibe. We arrives around 4:30 p.m. on a Thursday. The ordering process was quick, and they gave us a buzzer. The staff was friendly and helpful, since it was my first time there. It took less than 10 minutes to have the order ready. They packed the taco to the brim with beef and cheese, the toppings (onions and spicy sauce) came on the side. The star of the show was the broth. It was a rich flavor that paired well with the taco. Even sipping on the broth was delicious. It was not oily and was perfectly balanced. I got two because I was in a rush, but I was satisfied and did not feel heavy. I would highly recommend and would go again.
We love to bring friends, family and out of town guest who are craving Mexican food here. Located inside the Veil Brewery, great date night spot walking distance to Study Hall for a sweet treat after . Parking can be a little tricky but usually two trips around will open up a spot.
Probably my favorite Mexican place in RVA. It's close to where I live and has a lot of great beers to pick from at The Veil too. ***LOCATION*** Located inside the Forest Hill Veil, it's a great place to come to after work for a meal and some drinks. There is a parking lot, a bus stop, and tons of bike lock space. ***EXPERIENCE*** You can order your drinks and food at the bar. You'll get a pager that will let you know when your food is ready. Y Tu Mama is by the same people who do Pepe's. I have a friend who had Pepe's cater her wedding. Yes their food is that good. I love ordering the carne asada quesadilla. I also highly recommend the Chesterfield burrito or del mar burrito. My partner and I usually share the burritos (yes they're that big/filling). Y Tu Mama also has some of the best quesabirria tacos in town. Anything you get from here is bound to be packed with flavor. ***PRICE*** Meal prices range from $7-10 for generous portions of food. ***BATHROOM*** It's all black, which adds to the Veil's vibe. It's kept clean and there has never been a wait for the bathroom when I've visited. ***CONCLUSION*** Y Tu Mama is some of the best Mexican you can find in Richmond. The music is always amazing here and it's always nice to find great places in southside. This is a great spot for family, friends, dates, and even networking events. I cannot rave enough about Y Tu Mama.
Love the Forrest Hill location of the Veil with Y Tu Mama. Beer and Mexican food what more could you ask for?! The quesabirria tacos are juicy, cheesy and crunchy perfectly paired with the consume dip. Their salsas are amazing and the food comes out quickly! There is indoor and outdoor seating. Upstairs also offers additional seating. Good for large groups and the outdoor space is perfect to bring pups!
I saw an instagram post on the restaurant and decided to give it a try! Glad I did! A little hard to find as the restaurant name wasn't obvious from the outside as you drive by. The joint had a decent crowd. The drink menu was three times the size as the food menu. The staff was nice. We ordered the Carne Asada Tacos which were well seasoned and very meaty. This alone made her say, I'd come back!! I got the chicken tacos, again, they were not stingy with the meat, which was tender and tasty! The side was the weak point. The guacamole with the chips tasted fresh but needed some salt and lime juice. The chips could have saved the day had they had a little salt or flavor. This side was just okay. Not much to offer the non drinker but some bottle sodas and kombucha. Y Tu Mama had a nice atmosphere and the food was prepared fairly quickly. Place your order, get a pager and wait. It's a seat yourself place that was fairly clean with both indoor and outside seating. Y Tu Mama is worth a shot and I plan to return.
Love this place. Located inside Veil Brewing. Grab a taco, quesadilla or something good to eat and don't forget the draft. The Birria quesadilla are yummy. I had the Carne Asada tacos and always grab Arroz con Pollo for the road. The prices are reasonable (honestly for the quality and quantity it's amazing) The food taste delicious, the atmosphere is a vibe (plenty of seating upstairs/downstairs and outside) It was quick to order, the staff was friendly and helpful on choosing options. The food came out fast. Check it out if you're riding by. Be sure to check the times, I always want tacos on Monday and they are closed. *they also welcome children

Which is great when you're having a few drinks and want something to eat or snack on. The Food: I went here on a weekend and decided to give the food a try with a few friends. I decided on the Beef Birria Nachos to pair with my drinks and it was delicious. The nachos are very generously portioned and the beef Birria was flavorful and tasteful. There was a fair amount of everything and it all worked very well together. The Service: The service was great! Even for being busy on a weekend, the lines were moving fast and the food/drinks were able to get out in a timely manners staff were friendly as well! Solid 4/5! I'd definitely recommend stopping by if you're looking for some good beers and good food.
Listen hands down amazing!!! I cannot rave enough about how freakin tasty the food is here, at least what we had was!! We came here for a little Sunday funday action and our taste buds had a party!!! A huge fan of Quesabirria tacos, I would be remissed if I did not give them a try, both the chicken and the beef!! Let me tell you the flavor profile of both will have you dreaming about the tacos days and I mean days later. The meat was tender and moist, the consomme was piping hot!!! I added pico and cilantro to my tacos for that extra pop of flavor and it was a great choice!!! Every single one was dipped and dipped and dipped down to the last morsel!! Yes your hands will be dirty because if they are not, you are not eating them right!! The Carne Asada tacos are a steak lovers dream!! The steak was tender and the spicy sauce on the side is a tasty companion but you heard it hear first, if no one in your part has consomme, add some your order and dip these babies in it too!!!! You can thank me later and you are welcome in advance!! For the vegetarian in your crew, they also have veggie tacos that are tasty and they dressed them with big slices of avocado which was a huge plus!! Located inside the Veil Brewing Company, you can dine in and soak in those covered rooftop vibes along with outdoor seating. If you are carrying out, the have a pick up window that is strictly for carry out too. Talk about making it easy, they have it covered!! A trip here is a whole vibe, good eats, music was great, service was efficient. As if that is not reason enough, you can grab a brew with your chews and just chill in a lowkey atmosphere.
The wife and I finally made our way to The Veil's new location on Forrest Hill where nestled inside was a humble little Mexican food gem called Y Tu Mama. We came here on July 17th for beer but ended up ordering the quesa birria tacos which were out of this world. We bragged about the tacos so much we convinced our son to come with us the following day. Sadly his 16 year old palate did not appreciate the mild cinnamon flavor. My wife and I on the other hand were ALL ABOUT IT. The quesa birria tacos also come with a bowl of consommé for dipping. It's delicious. Normally on my Yelp reviews I give a history lesson on what exactly birria is but I implore you to google it. In closing the quesa birria tacos are the only thing I've ordered and may be the only thing I ever order. Its authentic Mexican cuisine with a slight twist (the cheese) and I think the people of Jalisco would be proud. This 1st generation Mexican American is beyond grateful that Y Tu Mama is here in Richmond.
Arguably the best tacos in Richmond and I'm not sure why this is my first time reviewing them. I've never had a bad meal here! This visit I got the tacos Al pastor. Absolutely amazing! The pineapple was grilled, pork seasoned to perfection and the sauces just sent it over the top. This was my first time in since they started serving margaritas, which were really good and on happy hour. Doesn't get better than that! Service is always quick and friendly. read more

I was at The Veil drinking beer and got hungry. Good thing there was a Mexican restaurant inside the brewery! You pay for your food at the same place where you order your drinks and they give you a buzzer that lights up when your food is ready. The food came out pretty quickly, even on a busy Saturday afternoon. I decided on the carne asada tacos, which came with cilantro and onions, and was accompanied by two sauces. The red one was a bit too spicy for my liking, but the green one was pretty good and accompanied the taco flavors well. The cubes of meat were a little dry and the tacos got cold quickly. Other than that, I enjoyed my meal and it paired well with my beer. Overall, this is a great place to come with friends. There were several families there with children as well. read more

Located inside the new Veil brewery, I absolutely love the atmosphere. Great music, mood lighting, graffiti, and an upper level, give it a big city vibe. Y tu mama is literally just a small counter to the right of the main bar counter. There is no waiter service, so you place your oder at the counter and they give you a pager to let you know it's done. The line can be crazy at times, especially if you're trying to figure out who's waiting to place an order vs who has already ordered, but for the most part, the line moves pretty quick. As for the food, it's totally worth it. Great quality and bold flavors. The menu is not overwhelming and every single thing that I tried was really good. On my third visit, I bought 4 friends with me and they were all very impressed. Lastly, I really like that they have a large outdoor area with plenty of tables, as well as a walk up takeout window. read more
Zero complaints. It was easy getting a table inside right at a window. Staff was pleasant. Service (at the counter-no table service) was fast. I tried the carne asada tacos and (DISCLAIMER) I have diminished taste/smell after COVID, so I couldn't really taste them, but judging by appearance, they're cooked well--the meat has a nice crisp to it and the shell is shaped in a way that allows you to eat it without too much mess. The price was good. My only complaint would be that the complimentary cup of guacamole is runny. They must water it down, because I've never had avocado that runny. On The Veil side, their version of hefeweizen (can't remember the name) was as good as I could taste. Again, good price. Beautiful atmosphere with lots of thoughtful, contemporary details for a modern audience. Lots of outdoor seating. Lots of windows inside so that you feel like you're outside even if you're in. I'm guessing birria tacos will land on a "top foods of 2021" list somewhere -- and for good reason: they're delicious. (But if you're in the RVA Dine Facebook group, search the topics before asking about them. Seriously. Drives me nutty.) Y Tu Mama's version is top tier. You can order two or three quesabirria tacos, and they come with consume and spicy sauce. If you're sensitive to spice (raises hand) you may want to avoid theirs. You can order online, at the takeout window, or inside the brewery itself. It has its own separate line close to the door. I ordered and was given a buzzer. It took about ten minutes to buzz, which was definitely reasonable. Make a reservation if you're planning to dine in at The Veil, as it's a crazy popular space. The tacos were perfectly crunchy, not too oily, and had such rich flavor profiles. I had two and that was plenty. I'm making myself hungry writing this while looking at the photos I took during my visit - ugh! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them or order again. Now if only they delivered! read more

We loved Y Tu Mama! The veggie tacos were super fresh and the quesaburria tacos were amazing. Both dishes came with two oversized tacos and homemade sauces. We also got chips, salsa, queso and the amazing white sauce - you do have to pay for these (as opposed to getting them for free at Pepe's) but it's worth it. Highly recommend! Also, they also have a to-go window located right outside the front door so you can order & pickup without having to step inside. read more

We came in on Easter Sunday about 4 PM with a party of 7. We were surprisingly able to find a table despite it being very busy. The shrimp quesadillas and black bean nachos were delicious. Unfortunately the carne asada tacos were greatly lacking. The meat was very over cooked. The toppings from the nachos definitely made them much better but the meat was very tough. Staff was friendly and helpful. I will likely return again and would recommend. read more

I had been wanting to try the birria tacos and someone suggested Yu Tu Mama and they did not disappoint. Staff was friendly, provided good service and knowledgeable about the variety of beers so they were able to recommend something to my liking. I believe they have upstairs seating if you aren't able to find anything on the first floor but you find your own seating. I definitely plan to go back to try some of their other food options. read more

I've been to quite a few Mexican spots and the food at Y Tu Mama surpassed all of my expectations. We went specifically for the birria tacos and those did not disappoint. The chicken and rice was so tasty! My husband and I decided this would be our new Mexican spot and the perfect place to order to-go on those nights we didn't want to go out. Y Tu Mama is located inside of the Veil on Forest Hill Ave. I recommend making a reservation just to guarantee your seating. read more
This spot is a WHOLE VIBE. It's basically inside the veil but I promise the ambiance of the place is really good and chill. Definitely a weekend spot to hang out, have some beers and some food. I got the beef birria tacos and my boyfriend got the chicken birria tacos and it comes with the mole dipping. The chicken birria tacos is so much better than the beef i think. My boyfriend thought it was 10/10. It's really nice to sit outside when the weather permits. No one was wearing mask which is a little off putting to me because we are still in a panoramic but hey, that's just me. The beer is really good pricing too so I wasn't too mad at that read more
LOVED all the food I ate there. Their quesadilla was perfectly cheesy, their quesabirria tacos were one of the best tacos I've ever had! I've been trying to find something to match my all time favorite birria tacos I ate a long time ago, but could never find anything to be remotely close...and these definitely came super close! I was ecstatic. The service was very smooth and pain free. They answered questions well and I got my order relatively quick! The vibes were different but in a cool way. The best part is that a brewery is connected to it! It's all in one building. What more could you want? read more
