Arguably the best tacos in Richmond and I'm not sure why this is my first time reviewing them. I've never had a bad meal here! This visit I got the tacos Al pastor. Absolutely amazing! The pineapple was grilled, pork seasoned to perfection and the sauces just sent it over the top. This was my first time in since they started serving margaritas, which were really good and on happy hour. Doesn't get better than that! Service is always quick and friendly. read more

I was at The Veil drinking beer and got hungry. Good thing there was a Mexican restaurant inside the brewery! You pay for your food at the same place where you order your drinks and they give you a buzzer that lights up when your food is ready. The food came out pretty quickly, even on a busy Saturday afternoon. I decided on the carne asada tacos, which came with cilantro and onions, and was accompanied by two sauces. The red one was a bit too spicy for my liking, but the green one was pretty good and accompanied the taco flavors well. The cubes of meat were a little dry and the tacos got cold quickly. Other than that, I enjoyed my meal and it paired well with my beer. Overall, this is a great place to come with friends. There were several families there with children as well. read more

My friends took me here for a late lunch on Thursday, and it did NOT disappoint. This might be the best place to get birria tacos--and maybe even a beer, as the restaurant is paired with a brewery. The place is beautiful, modern, spacious, and super clean. The setup is more like self-service--you order at the counter and pick up your food once your buzzer rings. But it's also a great spot to hang out, chat, enjoy happy hour, or even bring a laptop to do some work. Service was pretty standard, but the staff was kind when we asked one of the girls to take our picture. I had the 3 birria tacos (which they're known for) for $14--a great deal for such a generous portion. The tacos are packed with flavor, well-seasoned, and delicious on their own. But the birria broth is what makes this dish amazing. It's flavorful, not too heavy, and ties everything together perfectly. I can't emphasize enough how good these quesabirria tacos were. Came on a Saturday at 6 and it was packed! Lots of families with little children. I ordered the Chori Pollo (chorizo, chicken, rice and cheese sauce). The chicken turned out to be chicken thighs which I am not a fan of, I wish the description mentioned that. It didn't come with much queso so I ordered an extra side. I also got a side of the birria beef and unfortunately wasn't a fan of it either. I thought it would be shredded beef but it was cubed and fatty. The flavor of it was ok. The salsas, queso, and my husband's birria tacos were really good, I'll just know not to get the chicken or birria beef again. They slab a good amount of meat on the tacos however it was too much. The tortilla couldn't support. The pork had a good flavor however it was dropping grease. Which later upset my stomach. It took less than 10 minutes to have the order ready. They packed the taco to the brim with beef and cheese, the toppings (onions and spicy sauce) came on the side. The star of the show was the broth. It was a rich flavor that paired well with the taco. Even sipping on the broth was delicious. It was not oily and was perfectly balanced. Our favorite hack is to place a mobile order for takeout on the drive over so that our food is already done when we arrive. Then we find a spot inside to eat. Best way to survive a meal with an antsy toddler. Food - this is some of our favorite Mexican food in RVA! Everything is delicious with solid portions. Y Tu Mama is by the same people who do Pepe's. I have a friend who had Pepe's cater her wedding. Yes their food is that good. I love ordering the carne asada quesadilla. I also highly recommend the Chesterfield burrito or del mar burrito. My partner and I usually share the burritos (yes they're that big/filling). Y Tu Mama also has some of the best quesabirria tacos in town. Anything you get from here is bound to be packed with flavor. ***PRICE*** Meal prices range from $7-10 for generous portions of food. ***BATHROOM*** It's all black, which adds to the Veil's vibe. The joint had a decent crowd. The drink menu was three times the size as the food menu. The staff was nice. We ordered the Carne Asada Tacos which were well seasoned and very meaty. This alone made her say, I'd come back!! I got the chicken tacos, again, they were not stingy with the meat, which was tender and tasty! The side was the weak point. The guacamole with the chips tasted fresh but needed some salt and lime juice. The chips could have saved the day had they had a little salt or flavor. This side was just okay. Not much to offer the non drinker but some bottle sodas and kombucha. Y Tu Mama had a nice atmosphere and the food was prepared fairly quickly. Place your order, get a pager and wait. The wife and I finally made our way to The Veil's new location on Forrest Hill where nestled inside was a humble little Mexican food gem called Y Tu Mama. We came here on July 17th for beer but ended up ordering the quesa birria tacos which were out of this world. We bragged about the tacos so much we convinced our son to come with us the following day. Sadly his 16 year old palate did not appreciate the mild cinnamon flavor. My wife and I on the other hand were ALL ABOUT IT. The quesa birria tacos also come with a bowl of consommé for dipping. It's delicious. Normally on my Yelp reviews I give a history lesson on what exactly birria is but I implore you to google it. In closing the quesa birria tacos are the only thing I've ordered and may be the only thing I ever order. Its authentic Mexican cuisine with a slight twist (the cheese) and I think the people of Jalisco would be proud. We decided to order so many different things we got Birria tacos, nachos and guacamole! Everything was delicious but my first personal favorite was the Birria tacos and the nachos. The Birria tacos had a delicious, crunchy flavorful shell that was accompanied by the best consume I've ever had. The nachos were fully loaded. The ingredients were fresh. The chips were lightly salted, and the guacamole was absolutely divine. Located inside the new Veil brewery, I absolutely love the atmosphere. Great music, mood lighting, graffiti, and an upper level, give it a big city vibe. Y tu mama is literally just a small counter to the right of the main bar counter. There is no waiter service, so you place your oder at the counter and they give you a pager to let you know it's done. The line can be crazy at times, especially if you're trying to figure out who's waiting to place an order vs who has already ordered, but for the most part, the line moves pretty quick. As for the food, it's totally worth it. Great quality and bold flavors. The menu is not overwhelming and every single thing that I tried was really good. On my third visit, I bought 4 friends with me and they were all very impressed. Zero complaints. It was easy getting a table inside right at a window. Staff was pleasant. Service (at the counter-no table service) was fast. I tried the carne asada tacos and (DISCLAIMER) I have diminished taste/smell after COVID, so I couldn't really taste them, but judging by appearance, they're cooked well--the meat has a nice crisp to it and the shell is shaped in a way that allows you to eat it without too much mess. The price was good. My only complaint would be that the complimentary cup of guacamole is runny. They must water it down, because I've never had avocado that runny. On The Veil side, their version of hefeweizen (can't remember the name) was as good as I could taste. Again, good price. Beautiful atmosphere with lots of thoughtful, contemporary details for a modern audience. Lots of outdoor seating. Lots of windows inside so that you feel like you're outside even if you're in. We came in on Easter Sunday about 4 PM with a party of 7. We were surprisingly able to find a table despite it being very busy. The shrimp quesadillas and black bean nachos were delicious. Unfortunately the carne asada tacos were greatly lacking. The meat was very over cooked. The toppings from the nachos definitely made them much better but the meat was very tough. I'm guessing birria tacos will land on a "top foods of 2021" list somewhere -- and for good reason: they're delicious. (But if you're in the RVA Dine Facebook group, search the topics before asking about them. Seriously. Drives me nutty.) Y Tu Mama's version is top tier. You can order two or three quesabirria tacos, and they come with consume and spicy sauce. If you're sensitive to spice (raises hand) you may want to avoid theirs. You can order online, at the takeout window, or inside the brewery itself. It has its own separate line close to the door. I ordered and was given a buzzer. It took about ten minutes to buzz, which was definitely reasonable. Make a reservation if you're planning to dine in at The Veil, as it's a crazy popular space. The tacos were perfectly crunchy, not too oily, and had such rich flavor profiles. I had two and that was plenty.
