I decided to come by Chuy's in order to grab some authentic Mexican food. We were greeted by a welcoming staff, who made us feel welcome and festive. The decor was very nice and reminded me of different places places around the world. We only had to wait about five minutes before we were seated. We were greeted by a festive and really spirited server who made us feel welcome and like we were going to have a great time. Some people ordered some margaritas and various flavors while others got soft drinks with slices of lime. We were given some chips and salsa to enjoy while we decided on our dinner choice. I decided to order the burrito and it came out hot fresh and delicious. It was massive! The food was flavorful and smelled wonderful. If you are coming to Chuy's, I would recommend you come hungry. There's Tex-Mex and Mexican food. Chuy's is both while leaning towards Tex-Mex. being from New Mexico, I know authentic Mexican food, and having lived in Texas, I also know Tex-Mex. Chuy's is the best Mexican food in RVA. I've been all over RVA and eaten at many "Mexican" restaurants. None even remotely compare to the fresh chips, tortillas, foods, and salsa. The worst thing in Mexican cuisine is when you order and the food comes to your table in 10 minutes. That means reheated and not fresh. I dragged Hubs to Michael's down the street and had to feed him in exchange for him holding my shopping bags. We arrived right when they opened at 11 on a weekday and were seated immediately. The server was fantastic and when we mentioned that it was our first time there and had no idea which salsa we wanted to top the food, she brought us a flight of the salsas!!!!!! Seriously, she brought about 10 dipping cups of each of the salsas on the menu, told us what every one was and then we now now that pretty much all of them are awesome! That is some above and beyond customer service! Hubs got a burrito covered with whichever sauce was his favorite, and I am ashamed to admit I DEVOURED (about half of) the Comida Deluxe before coming up for air. It is an amazing mix of everything. You get to try their flautas, tostadas, queso, rice, beans, enchiladas... You can get a fairly good idea about how everything on their menu tastes pretty much from one plate. We loved the vibe in here which really goes with the whole Tex-Mex kitschy theme and looked around the entire time to try to take in everything. We will definitely be back repeatedly! read more

So I know it's a chain but it's my first time eating here. First- all the staff from cooks, front of house, waitress were amazing! So it's not any staff issue. If anything they were 5/5. Good- very meh and overpriced. So the chips and salsa that come - chips great thin and crisp. Then you get some slightly spicy ranch sauce ? It was ok but their salsa was outright bad. I'm not sure of the formula and I've had mediocre salsa but this was like ... I don't want to eat this salsa. I ordered the fajitas they were fine. I really enjoyed the fresh made tortillas. The rest was just ok and rice wasn't inedible-like salsa but wasn't good. Just for 15 dollars I felt the portion size was like half what I get anywhere else around here for 10 dollars. My mother had some enchiladas and liked them but agreed with everything else said it was ok but overpriced. If they are paying their awesome staff 15+ an hour which I hope they are I guess it's fine. Ate lunch here with wife around 12 noon. The restaurant is not too busy and plenty of staff to manage. Everything is clean inside and out. Staff is friendly. These chips are really good. The salsa is actually mostly tomato chunks and really good. The plate we ordered is the Elvis Presley and we split thus as it was even more than we could share. Never been a big fan of chain Mexican food, or Chuy's in general. But after my granddaughter's dance recital on a Sunday, our options were limited. She wanted Mexican for lunch, and her Mommy's first two choices turned out to be closed on Sundays. So Chuy's it was. Turned out to be a great choice. We went kind of late for lunch, and it turned out to be a lucky break. They were not overly busy, so we were able to put a couple of tables together for our party of 10. Greg was our waiter, and did an outstanding job. Even with 10 of us, we never ran out of chips or salsa, and he was very entertaining to the 3 grandkids. And to my surprise, the food was very good. For overall perspective, we collectively give it 4 stars. Server wasn't on the ball unfortunately with drinks, chips and our needs in-general but the manager covered any gaps (e.g. water refills and more chips). If our server nailed it, definitely 5 stars. If you aren't familiar with Chuy's, the have a *superb* creamy jalapeno dip that they bring out along with the chips and salsa...easily my particular favorite personally at the restaurant (my wife loves it so much too that occasionally she will have me buy it by the quart!). Two orders of burritos, a chuychanga (chimichanga) and a taco salad all were solid entrees. My salad came in a big bowl but never did get my requested side plate/bowl (back to my comment about server missing some things) so I didn't add dressing on entire salad...I knew I wouldn't eat it all and didn't want leftovers soggy). Chuy's used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Decent food for the price and Dos equis on happy hour, but they need to get their roach problem under control. Also, the phone app for call ahead seating did not work when we tried it...it let us reserve but the restaurant did not show us on the wait list. To be honest, I really wasn't impressed with this restaurant. We were seated beside the bar at a high top table and the bar patrons were pretty loud, considering it was only around 4 pm. There wasn't much of a selection of food items, and I found the food to be mediocre. The chips and salsa were bland, and the service was slow. (Are those chips made with flour tortillas instead of corn? I couldn't even tell.) I didn't really like the seasoning they use for their ground beef in their enchiladas. My husband had a bad experience previously at a different location, but his 2nd experience was better! My first time here and his 3rd experience and the food was awesome! I really enjoy this option for Mexican good. I find Chuy's to be a little different than the typical and appreciate the variations of dishes and ingredients from the same Mexican you can get anywhere. The sauces, to me, give a great chance to enhance the meals. The creamy jalapeño is my favorite! Their chips are very thin and wonderfully salty (which may not be everyone's preference, but I love them!). You gotta be careful though or you'll eat so many that you won't want an entree. The steak tacos were wonderfully seasoned! Lots of flavor. I loved the green rice, especially because it had a nice kick! The guacamole was pretty salty, but that's probably a result of a heavy hand or weak stir and I don't think it would always be the case. My husband seemed to really like the enchiladas, but I didn't try them since I was so full of chips! The bartender was very nice and attentive to our needs. It was Sunday November 6th when I finally made my way to CHUY's! I was on a date and she recommended we try this place. The décor is pretty funky and fun; I liked it immediately. Suiza, meaning Swiss, is simply an adjective that indicates the dish is topped with a white, milk, or cream-based sauce. Legend tells us it's derived from Swiss immigrants living in Mexico who established dairies to produce cream and cheese. It was delicious and I devoured those suckers in no time flat. The refried beans were interesting and I think I'll just leave it at that. The rice was pleasant. Obviously the star of the show was the suiza sauce and the tender chicken hidden within. I had enough room left over to give their tres leches cake a whirl. Some might think the three milks are from different animals but Sancho is here to school you cabróns to the game. Chuy's is kitschy, from the dog-themed decor on the walls to their pop-culture themed t-shirt sales, to their broad swath of Tex-Mex flare/spin on Mexican staples. While there are some things about Chuy's that stand out (e.g. Creamy Jalapeno Dip, Homemade Tortillas, Tres Leches Cake), they are mostly flare and not a whole lot of substance. If you are craving awesome Mexican food, do yourself a favor and go to Don Pepe just a little further up Hull St. near Genito; it is the best in RVA. One thing that Chuy's does really well is their chips and salsa -- they have a wide variety of sauces, not only on the salsa bar, but all of the sauces are available with the chips (upon request) when you get seated. I HIGHLY recommend the Creamy Jalapeno Dip (think spicy ranch dressing), it is great on everything! For entrees, most recently I tried the Saturday Special, the Macho Burrito (a flour tortilla stuffed with roasted pork, green chiles, jack cheese & guacamole, smothered with Hatch Green Chile Tomatillo Sauce) and subbed the Mexican Rice for Chile Rice. While big and heavy, it wasn't particularly flavorful -- and the tomatillo sauce completely overpowered the flavor profile of the pork, so much so that the protein provide more by means of texture than flavor. It wasn't bad, per se, but I wouldn't get it again. I normally get the Southwestern Enchiladas, which are much better than this burrito on their worst day. The homemade blue corn tortillas that they use really add something to the open-faced enchiladas. Another place where Chuy's shines is the Tres Leches Cake. While not as good as the best ever (see: Kuba Kuba), for a chain, it is really nice. The size is plenty to split, and the combination of the cream sauce that the cake is soaked in and caramel drizzle on top is just sweet enough without going overkill. While not bad, Chuy's is hit or miss, with some notable highlights. Across the board, for what it is, it is also a bit pricey for Tex-Mex food, without corresponding quality or flavor to match. For best results, come for Happy Hour, try all of the great sauces and salsa, and get a Tres Leches to take home. read more
