Looks can be deceiving. I wanted to love this place so much. I am all for an upscale Mexican taco joint and was so happy when I walked past the Annex but unfortunately the food just didn't make the cut. We started with the queso which was okay. Nothing crazy but we were also bummed they do not provide complimentary salsa ($3 charge). For dinner we got the shrimp taco, carne asada taco and chicken fajita. The shrimp was charred and normally I'm all about that but this char was just straight unappealing burnt flavor. The steak was poor quality and the chicken fajitas just weren't anything special. We asked to substitute black beans for the refried beans as the side to the fajitas and got charged an extra $3 again even though they were the same price?? Ultimately we left paying too much for not good food which was a real bummer. On a positive note the space is cute though and they have two big screen TVs. read more

Great new spot for margaritas! Cute new Tex-Mex restaurant in the fan. Love the atmosphere and decorations. They also have a ton of tequilas that you can choose from! I ordered the carne asada taco & chips/salsa and it was delicious! They also have a sour patch kids margarita that you definitely need to try plus a 40oz size if you're that bold. I definitely want to come back and try the other food items on the menu! Great new spot and highly recommend checking out!! read more

Cool little spot. Amazing margaritas and only 5 bucks during their HH. Im doing meatless today so I opted for the Southwest Eggsrolls, they are filled with rice, beans and veggies...a bit underwhelming but served hot with a side of chipotle ranch sauce. I'd definitely come back for the drinks and the bartender was super cool! read more

Cute new spot in the Fan! Love the location and overall interior vibe. I came on a Friday night about ~3-4 weeks after their opening and was pretty disappointed in the service. Our server clearly did her absolute best, but they just seemed very understaffed for the business they were getting. The manager was running all of her orders and the bartender was stationed at the bar. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure there were no other servers... I'm guessing it probably took about 20 minutes to get a drink after I was seated and eventually I just resorted to going to the bar for refills of water because the poor server was single-handedly manning all of the tables. The tacos were actually delicious, as were the chips and dips. I could very easily see The Annex with 4 or 5 stars once they work out what I feel may have been some "growing pains" as they adjust still to their new rhythm. read more

Come here for the drinks, not the food. Visited yesterday with a party of six and we were all pretty disappointed with the food but loved our margaritas. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and was not impressed. The chicken was dry and the tortilla was tough and hard to chew. The refried beans were cold and tasted like they came straight out of the can and my rice was also somewhat hard. Some friends had the tacos, which they seemed content with but weren't blown away. I'd definitely come back to enjoy the bar, eat chips and salsa and watch a game but not for the entrees. read more

Drinks: okay Service: practically non existent Happy hour seemed decent so we gave it a shot while visiting a friend. As I type this I'm waiting on the bartender, Kelsey, to finish reading her book at a table to come close us out. It seemingly hasn't occurred to her to attend to us. When we arrived and sat at the bar she asked if we wanted food menus. We said yes, got them. We then had to ask for the drinks menu. And then the happy hour menu. My girlfriend paid in cash - didn't receive the change. When it was asked about, Kelsey said they don't have change - and she had short changed us. Didn't mention it at all. read more

Checked out The Annex for the first time and was shocked to see the reviews this place had before going! Honestly, we had a great time! The queso is ok but, I wouldn't recommend it. The salsa is great, and this is a must have! As for my meal I got two tacos gringos, carnitas and chicken! I honestly, don't even like carnitas but, a friend recommended them and I loved it! They had great margaritas specials and everyone at the table that got them, enjoyed them! I got beer on draft that wasn't on happy hour, it was $7. If you can find something on happy hour that you like, you'll get off pretty cheap! I'd definitely return in the future. read more

Love this new spot! It's super cute and quaint. The tacos are delish and the 40 oz sour patch margarita is AMAZING . I can't remember my servers name but she was excellent. Our first visit to The Annex, and it won't be our last. I had a short rib enchilada with roasted corn salsa and rice with beans. My wife had the empanadas special. Both entrees were well-prepared, well-presented, and delicious. Our dessert was the apple churros--truly exceptional. Our drinks were fine, the service was prompt and friendly, and prices were quite reasonable. As a bonus, the Annex was cozy, warm, and quiet enough to hear table conversation easily--the latter a rarity in RVA, unfortunately. I wish Yelp allowed half-stars, as I'd like to leave a 4.5 star rating. You'll have to supply that in your imagination, I guess. But please do stop by and have a drink or a meal at this lovely restaurant. We're looking forward to our next time already. read more

I went there tonight with a couple of friends for the first time. The waitress was friendly, and was able to get my tacos made with a lettuce wrap instead of flour or corn. Two out of the four of us had our orders messed up, but I didn't mind too much. The tacos were alright, but the chicken was really over cooked. I really don't feel like the tacos were worth the price. The waitress was new, but my friend asked for water twice and don't get a refill until we got our checks. All of our checks were messed up, I had an extra item that I didn't order on it. If that was my total I wish I ordered an extra taco because I left hungry. It was nice enough for what it was, but I doubt I'll go back read more

Came to the Annex on a double date night. The margaritas and Southwest Eggroles kicked us off really well. Chef DaVe spent a great deal of time with us at our table to help with some of our dietary restrictions. All four entrees we got were awesome. Everything from the vegetarian enchiladas to the big old burrito with Fiket Mignon. We will definitely be back. read more

After walking past it several times, I was excited to try this place because the decor and vibe seemed really cool but I was super disappointed by the food. I ordered the empanadas and street corn to start and unfortunately is what ruined the whole experience for me since those are hard to mess up, had a jumbo marg which was INDEED jumbo and good, then the banh mi tacos which I did enjoy. The rest of the party I was with all said the food was just ok. If we return it's only because the location is convenient but I much rather prefer the other taco places in Richmond. read more

I went here the other night and really enjoyed it! We went on a Thursday night so I was worried that it was going to be packed and have poor service considering a lot of the reviews mention that. We walked in, sat down at the bar, and the bartender served us immediately. He was great! I wish I got his name and I would have given him a shout-out. We ordered two margaritas and chips with queso. The chips and queso were good but the margaritas were awesome. Talking with the bartender, he mentioned they make all of their margaritas in house and then put them in a keg which I thought was kind of cool! You don't see a keg full of margaritas very often. We each ordered two tacos: shrimp, carne asada, hamburger taco, and chicken tacos. Great! I think my favorite was the shrimp. My favorite part was the bartender offering to make different margaritas that weren't on the menu. That was a nice touch and was cool to see his creative side. He made me a jalapeno margarita. I went to The Annex this past weekend with my boyfriend and it was absolutely incredible! We sat at the bar and were served immediately. The bartender was extremely helpful and made sure we were always taken care of. When you go, be sure to try their margaritas! Our favorite part however, was the food. The chef personally came out to explain the menu to us, as it was our first time and helped us decide on a few of his favorite dishes. I highly recommend their wings as an appetizer! The menu has been recently updated so if you have not been there within the past month, I highly recommend you go back to try their new menu! The staff here is very welcoming and they make you want to become regulars because they are so personable. This will definitely become a weekly date spot for us, as the restaurant has a mellow vibe and delicious food. read more

I do not normally write reviews, so hopefully that tells you something. This place was cute, the food was good...but our drinks were NOT good. My friend and I got two of the Happy Hour margaritas, and they had almost no flavor whatsoever. Only got them the 2nd time because they were cheap. We thought that maybe because they were only $5 that the bartender didn't put much effort into them....so we both ordered the Paloma after happy hour was over. That too was just not good. We did enjoy our happy hour taquitos, carne asada taco, black sesame tuna taco, and the guac. I am hoping it was just the bartender, but I didn't watch to see if she made the margs herself or if she used the margs on tap (noticed this later on). I may try it again and order the house margs and hope for the best. We'll see if they are better. read more

I adore this little Tex Mex spot. Some of the recent reviews are saddening because all the meals I've had here have been full of flavor and delicious! I love the vegetarian chili, eggplant tacos, sesame black tuna tacos. The flavored margaritas are obviously going to be on the sweeter side, so go with the classic if you're feeling more mellow. The guacamole been perfect every time I've ordered it, and the tequila selection is IMMACULATE. Definitely a fun place for drinks, tacos, or date night. read more

I really wanted to like this place going into it but when I went there was a group of about 12 people that look like they were auditioning for a jersey shore reboot that seemed to be friends with the owner/manager. They were loud, obnoxious and honestly ruined the experience for me even if the food was good. They clustered at the door making it impossible for anyone to come in or leave without weaving between 5 people. The chicken and barbacoa in the tacos were dry and lacked flavor, chips and queso were ok, drinks were reasonably priced, but again management needs to reign in their patrons if they want it to be the small cozy place that focuses on the dining experience like they claim they want it to be. read more

I should have read the reviews first but I'm really into new little nooks in the fan area so I was excited try The Annex. It was a full night planned with my friend starting with some TexMex (I usually got to Wong Gonzales but I thought why not do something different). Needless to say it was not a good start to the night. We walk in and seat ourselves to only wait 15 minutes with no acknowledgement or even a hello from any server or bartender. I was in complete shock simply because the restaurant was not full or busy. Our table was walked by at least a dozen times before we decided to get up and leave. Places like this do not last long around here. read more

I really truly wanted to love this spot. It can be a cute happy hour spot, BUT JUST FOR DRINKS. I am in no way a picky eater but the food was just... Bad....lets get to the shits. There is parking on the side of the building, BIG PLUS. Upon walkin we (my wife and I) were warmly greated, and sat at the bar. The inside is beautiful, very tastefully decorated. Was given 3 menus, the happy hour, the drink and the food menu. We decided on the sour patch margarita and a house margarita, both frozen. The house margaritas was good, pretty average. The sour patch margarita tasted just like the house margita. Disappointing.. We ordered the taquitos and that is where we fucked up :( the chicken was OVER COOKED and SATURATED in grease. Not to mention the taste :( needless to say we didn't order anything else, out of fear. We will come back, but just for house margaritas on happy hour, and that's not even guaranteed as a chef I just cannot give this place anything more than 2 stars and the only reason it got two is because the bartender was nice. read more

Best tacos in Richmond! We came on Taco Tuesday and all of the tacos are half off - could not believe such a delicious dinner was so affordable. We read on here that new chefs started about a month ago and we can vouch that they are doing a great job! Our server was super nice and attentive . . Overall just a great experience.. A cute, newly renovated place, the emphasis in this place is obviously on tequila and related mixed drinks. That being the case, I ordered a conventional (ie, lime) margarita. It had the oddest aftertaste and was sweet. Hmm, I have lived along the southern border for many years and never tasted a margarita like that. OK, on to the food: it's an afterthought. The fish taco was pretty good, the carne asada taco was only so-so, and the Mexican corn salad was just plain awful. One out of four is not great, and to top it off the service was not very good, even in a nearly empty restaurant. Too bad, it would have been nice to have a great taco place within easy walking distance. read more

My friend and I came in cause we saw a sign for margaritas.. and even those were eh. Service was terrible, asked three times for a glass of water, and food took 45 minutes. Food was dry and not flavorful. Also they don't put salt on their tortilla chips, who doesn't put salt on their tortilla chips?! read more

We were greeted by an enthusiastic host and seated immediately at a booth up front. The server came by within seconds and brought us water and place settings. We decided to get the chips and salsa for an appetizer and a pair of melting chimichangas for entrees. I can't resist some chorizo and steak. My partner got the chimichanga without chorizo and with chicken. The ambiance was colorful with beautifully painted murals on each wall, and the atmosphere was undeniably loud. There were lots of patrons. The place was packed, even at the bar, so your mileage may vary. We received our orders within minutes of each other, so there wasn't much of a wait time. The chips and salsa were homemade, fresh, warm, and delicious (muy rico). Same for the entrees; exactly what I want in a Mexican food restaurant. The chorizo and steak were well-cooked, seasoned, and chopped finely, but not ground. I was in heaven with that chimichanga. We had to take home leftovers. The next night, heated in the oven at 325 for 30 minutes, they were similarly excellent. The night ended without dessert, sadly (too full). However, the server was quick and efficient, and he was always around to fill water and bring anything we needed throughout the meal. Great experience overall. We will definitely return here whenever we have a hankering for some good Mexican food at reasonable prices. I can recommend this place to anyone who appreciates hearty and filling Mexican food.

Our server was nice, but she didn't really answer our questions about the menu or substitutions, which was a little inconvenient. Also, we kept having to ask for utensils and napkins, which made our food get a bit cold. The pineapple habanero margarita tasted like spicy pineapple juice and was pretty expensive. It was pretty, but not worth the money. The food also was really average, but the portion sizes were good for sharing. The huitlacoche tacos were a little bland and soggy, the chicken chipotle tacos had a good sauce but were also soggy and the fajitas did not have enough seasoning. Not a restaurant that I would come back to, but I liked it's proximity to other dessert places nearby.

Don't be fooled by the strip mall that it's located in--it's definitely worth the trip.

They load your plate with sautéed onions and peppers, and the avocado was fresh and tasty. Service was attentive and quick. They had excellent salsa choices, including a very tasty/hot rojo salsa, which we've struggled to find at other restaurants in town. We'll definitely be back.

All of the tacos were topped with cilantro and diced raw onions, but you can opt to not have it. They also had a sauce bar with different sauce options from the wimpy tomatillo sauce to the hottest. The server was friendly and nice. They also offered a good variety of menu items including desserts. I asked the waitress about their tacos on other days and she said they are $3.49 each and slightly bigger. Finding a cheap meal is hard these days. We will definitely be back.

It was also the evening time so, it was busy, but she was just so calm and helpful. I didn't get a name, but you are amazing and hope you are doing well! Tacos were the best I had since my trip to the Bay in '19. Al pastor was perfect. My husband said the chicken quesadilla is the best he's ever had in his life. All the food was what we wanted and it hit that taco craving. Like everyone has said, it's as good as west coast tacos.
