1 star for the lack of organization and care. We made a reservation for a party of 13 about a week in advance through their website, so we expected the restaurant to be prepared. When we arrived, they threw together a random booth with connected tables and it honestly looked like a hot mess. Meanwhile, there were two other large parties there with nicely arranged setups. When we asked about it, the manager said it was "because they were 17 people." That response made no sense to me -- a reservation is a reservation, and every group should receive the same level of preparation and service regardless of size. If the restaurant can't properly accommodate large reservations, there should either be a limit on the website or someone should call ahead to communicate that. Instead, we had family standing around waiting while the staff acted completely unbothered. Overall, it felt disorganized, dismissive, and disappointing. read more

Overall enjoyed my experience at La Playa. I sat at the bar and my bartender was very nice and overall everyone (including other staff) was attentive to me. I also appreciate the prices. I ordered a house margarita, a soft serve margarita, and fish tacos (which came with 3 tacos and rice) for only $41!! I know most Mexican restaurants give free chips and salsa but theirs were perfectly salted! I thoroughly enjoyed them. I ordered the fish tacos, which were okay. Although it was cooked well, the fish lacked some flavor, so the sauce carried the tacos. The sauce had a nice hint of spice. The star of the show was the soft serve margarita! It was so refreshing! read more

I came here for the soft serve margaritas and they were so cute but I've definitely had better. They are worth a try! Indulged in the happy hour menu which had some pretty good deals. The shrimp empanadas were definitely my favorite. Chicken quesadilla comes in second then the beef. Wings tasted microwaved so I wouldn't get those again. Arroz con pollo was quite tasty! Server was nice but not super attentive. read more

Might have found our local go to Mexican - the classic Tex mex. Service was fast and the food has always been consistent. The carne asada plate was delicious - perfectly grilled steak with a side of the classic orange rice. Arron con pollo here is also delicious - comes out piping hot and the chicken tastes fresh off the grill. Haven't had drinks here but seems like the perfect place for fun margaritas. read more

Lá Playa is a beautifully decorated restaurant with vibing music and good service. We walked in and were greeted and seated within a couple of minutes. The first thing we noticed was the popping color and how well the space was set up. There's much to catch your eye like the big fishies on the wall. The menu was eye catching as well with much to choose from. I went for the seafood nachos (since they seemed to be all the rave from other yelpers) and I'm so glad I did! When I tell you that the nachos were some of the best I've ever had, please believe me. Shrimp, scallops, delicious queso, jalapeños, etc! It's a must try. I'll be going back to la playa for weekend vibes. Enjoy! read more

Cousins meet and greet in the New Year @laplayarva Happy Hour specials M-F/2-6p on deck 1/2 off appetizers (all except the oysters) and drink specials to include $5 margaritas! The atmosphere was upbeat but a small crowd and customer service were awesome! Empanadas were the fan favorite, ceviches, calamari, queso, guacamole, drinks and wings were good also (average rating from the cousins group 3.8/5). I frequent La Playa often and it is easily one of my favorite Mexican Restaurants in the city. The staff is warm and friendly with consistently good service. The food is flavorful, fresh and I appreciate the diverse menu. I also appreciate the rear parking in the back of the restaurant. The happy hour deals are also decent and available daily. read more

Prices felt expensive, but they gave us a lot of food. It was solid but didn't feel like anything special. There was no one in there when we went at 7 on a Monday night. The service was super quick and attentive. The resturant was huge and very cutely decorated, it felt more like I was at a resort somewhere than in rva. read more

Service, good food was excellent And I love to get in before it is crowded ! My favorite place to come to for red snapper now

The food was incredible, 5 stars. I ordered the camarones yucatecos, and it was outstanding. So were the queso and guacamole. Others at the table ordered fajitas, and they were also very tasty. Unfortunately the service was friendly but lacking. 3 stars. We had to ask for cutlery, napkins, and plates for fajitas. 3 people came by right away to check if the food was good, and then we didn't see anyone for a long time. The fajitas only came with 4 comically small tortillas, and we weren't able to ask for more. And when it came time to leave, we had to wave someone down to pay. read more

I was very disappointed with how my party of 13 was handled. I called midweek to confirm my reservation, and the staff did not even know who had the reservation book. We called again the day of the event to reconfirm and were assured everything was noted. However, when we arrived, absolutely nothing was set up for us. The staff then scrambled to put together mismatched tables and chairs in an uncomfortable space. The overall presentation looked completely unorganized and unacceptable for a celebration. Unfortunately, I was unable to hold my event there and had to walk out and book another location last minute that received us appropriately and professionally. Very disappointing experience and overall poor coordination and customer service. read more

The food was okay, lots of very unique things on the menu that are different from your average Mexican restaurant. The service was good, the food came out realllllkyyy fast but we went on a Sunday afternoon so it wasn't super busy. The ambiance gives off beach vibes. I'd go back, interested in trying different things on the menu tho and getting more chicken wings! read more

Inexpensive, great value for the money. Food was okay, ambience is very beach town boardwalk-esque. UPDATE on the food, the reheated (in the oven) leftovers are spectacular! We got the chicken chipotle alfredo and the chicken fajitas. read more

We frequently head here after a trip to the Children's Museum--it never disappoints. Haven't been in since renovations and name change but the food, particularly the seafood is always fantastic. Today I had breaded LaPaz fish tacos and my husband had Chipotle Chicken, which was equally excellent. The service is always great and we love how it's kid friendly for us at lunch. Many families and groups are easily accommodated. Way to go! Keep it up! 5 Stars! read more

Found this place while in Richmond thanks to this app. Had a pretty good score so I wanted to see what it was about. When it comes to parking you will park in the rear of restaurant. Be weary on the day we went there were quite a few what appeared to be homeless in the vicinity. There is a beach vibe to the location- note all the fun decor touches such as beach with waves(done w resin and paint) tables, the glass jellyfish like lights and airbrushed octopus in rear by the kitchen. On Sundays they have lunch until 2 and happy hour starts at 2 with its own specials. Their happy hour is from 2-6pm. The entree I got was the shrimp burrito and it was delicious I lived the small lettuce and citrus garnish on the side and it seemed there was some. chopped mango as well. The shrimp are generous size and very fresh ingredients. We also had the pulled pork burrito and it was good but not as good as my shrimp one. We tried two of the Cadillac margaritas once it was 2pm and I wasn't a huge fan. The ones we had didn't taste good and I normally live margaritas. I can't place my finger on what it tasted like just not what I expected. Next time I would try something else as a lot of the drinks coming from the bar looked amazing presentation wise. I would eat here again but would try different things on the menu - staff was courteous and attentive too. read more

We stopped in for happy hour and had a really good time! Our server, Jacob, was great too, and was attentive and fun to interact with. We ordered the seafood nachos and we were not disappointed. A large platter with chips, queso, pico and loaded with shrimp, scallops and octopus that quickly disappeared as we gobbled everything up. We also enjoyed their lime margaritas ... both frozen and on the rocks, as well as a Coronarita. Everything was delicious and the restaurant itself has a great vibe. All the employees were friendly and made sure we were having a good time. We'll definitely be back! read more

WORST PLACE. Sat at the bar and manager/bartender/clown could see that I was seated and waiting. He was talking to a couple of girls about alcohol at the bar. Only handed me menu and did not speak. Continued talking to the same girls for over 10 minutes while other customers sat down and never got service. This is a piss poor person to hire to be a manager and bartender to run the business to the ground. Useless. read more

I was looking for a new restaurant when my favorite Mexican restaurant closed. I found La Playa. The food tastes fresh & the chicken tastes like it's been turning on a spit, slowly roasting or in a smoker. I can't decide which. I love the flavor. The chicken is shredded perfectly in the enchiladas. That's important to me! The cheese dip is rich & creamy. Of course, the staple beans & rice are delicious. They specialize in mariscos; seafood. There is also a excellently priced lunch menu & a create your own combo section if you want something more traditional & a daily happy hour. The bar drinks are perfection. The decor is filled with lots of aqua colored, aquatic creatures painted on the walls & ceiling. The white & aqua-marine colors throughout give a fresh, crisp look. It all looks very clean but inviting. There is always an upbeat selection of music playing which enhances the experience & fun & makes you want to linger. The staff is focused on making sure you enjoy your experience. They have a nice granite counter bar with comfortable seats & numerous TVs for the sports fans. If you prefer a booth & sit on the Broad Street side, you can watch the world go by. They have a large separate room for special events. When you visit, make sure you park in the spots that say La Playa. If you park in the red lined spaces, you can be towed. I really think you'll enjoy La Playa & it'll be worth the visit. It has become my new favorite. read more

Food and drinks are top notch. Servers are super friendly. Soft serve margaritas are amazing too

The service was less than desirable. My male waiter stood by a table (assuming his friends/peers) the entire time. Although I tipped him, he was not deserving in any way. When it was Lalo's, my experience was far better and the food then was great! I definitely won't be back! read more

Finally made it to La Playa and it was such a great experience! The moment I walked in, I was hit with tropical island blue ocean vibes--seriously, the decor is EVERYTHING. We kicked things off with some chips and salsa... and babyyy, the salsa is spicy but super delicious! Then, I chose the refreshingly delicious cucumber basil margarita and it was perfectly balanced to cool my burning mouth down lol--highly recommend! And for my entree I got the fajita texana which was really tasty! Served with fresh warm tortillas that were die for! And the Spanish rice and beans it came with was full of flavor. Hope you're lucky enough to see China, the bartender and tequila expert! She shared all her tequila knowledge with us and was super fun to talk to. Great energy, amazing service, and she's got all the tequila secrets! This spot is definitely where you need to be! Great food, good vibes, daily specials and top-tier service! read more

Poor and inattentive service. Never given water or offered any. Horchata was thick and a bit gritty for my liking. Chips and queso were good. Had to wait a long time to get the bartenders attention to ask for more chips- at that point our queso was cold. I'm watching the food come up on the pass and see my plate sitting there for at least 10-15 minutes. By the time it does come out, the food runner mistakenly gives it to the wrong bar guests. We tell him that is our food. At this point I try my food and it is not hot at all. Rice and beans were barely lukewarm, the carnitas were only partially warm. Did not want to send it back because who knows how long it would have taken to be refired or at least reheated. My fiancé had the shrimp tacos and there was a shell on one of the shrimp. We watched other bar guests sit down and the bartender rolled her eyes and obviously did not want to be there. As a guest, it is not the level of service you're hoping for. The guests who sat next to us took our menus because they had sat so long without even being greeted or given menus. All in all, we will not be back and will try other local spots. read more
