This place was right around the corner from our hotel and it had good reviews, so we decided to give it a try. How can you NOT have Tex Mex in Texas right? I got a carne asada burrito with rice, beans, and a spicy red sauce. The rice and beans had really good flavor. The sauce on my burrito was good, but the burrito itself was lacking. It was like 75% tortilla. There was hardly any meat or cheese inside. I ended up opening the tortilla and just scooping out the little bit of filling there was with a spoon. We also ordered the things that are similar to nachos (cannot remember the name sorry) and those were really good. We got half chicken and half steak. They were like the perfect bites of nacho because they each had a large amount of meat, beans, cheese, and all the toppings you could want on the side. We honestly liked these better than our actual meal. We ordered a large margarita as well, and they didn't put salt or lime. Not really sure how you can have a margarita without salt or lime but we didn't bother to ask them to fix it since we ordered the food to go. The margarita itself was also really sweet and artificial tasting. The chips and salsa were good, and the food came out fast (we ordered curbside) but not the best authentic Tex Mex in my opinion. read more

The last time I ate at Chuy''s was in the mid 90's when I was slingin enchiladas and chasing drunk patrons who just swiped one of the carved fish that hung in the bar. Mike Young's recent passing I felt compelled during my next visit to Austin to pay the Barton Springs location a visit. It's no longer locally owned, has a NASDAQ ticker symbol and a lot of the kitschy decorations are gone. But the bust of Elvis I bought back in the day is no longer on top of the margarita machine but protected like the Mona Lisa behind glass. The food is still terrific, the burrito is still the size of a college football and the queso rocks!!! I had the Chicken flautas and my kids shared the fajitas... everything was delicious. Staff was friendly and attentive and especially patient as we took too much time to order. Alot has changed (no Chuy special with blue corn tortillas or chili relleno and the photo booth is gone). But the cool vibe and the food is exactly what I remember. And of course the Elvis statue I picked up off a Greensheets for $30 is now safe! read more

While there are other Chuy's locations, none of them quite compare to Chuy's on Barton Springs. People complain about the wait times but in my opinion, a good meal is worth the wait. Dan is one of my favorite bartenders in town. I always sit at the bar at this location. Endless chips, the best limey margaritas, quick turnaround time for authentic, true Texas-sized Texmex food. I have never been too big on chain-food restaurants but when it comes to Chuy's, I make an exception as I am always treated like family and taken good care of no matter how busy the restaurant is. The wait at Matt's was over an hour so we tried an old school fave, Chuy's instead. Glad we did. No wait at 6 pm on Friday. Excellent chips, salsa, and jalapeno ranch dressing (without even having to ask for the ranch) comes out fast. Compuesto queso was good but darker and not as creamy yellow as I remember. The Mexi Cobb salad was excellent for around $10 (why doesn't every tex mex place have this chicken fajita salad as an option). A must in Austin. Chuy's is simply delicious Tex mex. They use the perfect amount of spice that just happens to be completely cured with one of their frozen margs. Most recently I tried their seasonal blackberry marg cut with the original lime. They should just go ahead and serve that the time. It was delicious and exactly what I didn't know I needed. Recently had dinner here with family on a sunday night. They were extremely busy, and we waited about 45 minutes to be seated. They add your name to a waitlist and send you a text when your table is ready, so you can go walk around the area as long as you don't wander too far off. Our waiter was fairly new, and had to ask for clarification on the menu items several times but was otherwise very attentive and efficient. I had the fajita beef tacos with their hatch green chile sauce. The beef strips were enormous for a taco and had to be cut up, and also weren't very tender, but otherwise seasoned well. Their hatch green chile sauce was served warm and had a weird thickness to it that was a little off-putting. Complimentary chips and 2 types of salsa that were both good. Salsa is spicy and fresh. Staff is attentive and helpful. I ordered veg chuychanga and it is very nice. I tried the Boom Boom signature sauce with chuychanga and I highly recommend this sauce. I believe this is probably true for "Tex Mex" cuisine. For me, great attention to the customer is Important which our server Matt possessed in spades. I like spicy which was not present in the standard salsas served. I asked if they had anything spicy and he immediately brought me the salsa served with their steak burrito. Delicious!! I ordered the steak burrito whose meat was nicely seared. I recommend this dish if you are not a lover of freshly cooked beans. Beans served tasted as though they were straight out of a can. I would have enjoyed my entree if they would have left the beans off of my plate. Ambiance felt like my grandmothers kitchen which I enjoyed along with a cold Corona and a margarita that came with an inverted bottle of beer. This drink i highly recommend!!!! I am a native Texan, my father was a native Texan and his favorite restaurant of all time was Chuy's. For a while, this was the best Tex-Mex you could get, no more. I swore off eating here in Houston but I thought for sure Austin would be different, this is literally the original. No. I will never step foot inside another Chuy's as long as I live. A friend was visiting from California and we had done all of the cool Austin things so I thought for sure I'm going to take him for TexMex, that was one of his must haves. I looked around and I thought I'm not going to go to Chuy's because it has been such a disappointment for so long, but I thought this is the original it's in Austin this will be the place. The regret is deep. We walked in, everyone is super nice, no problem there. Sat down, ordered queso of course. We got our chips and drinks, service was really fast. I had told my friend you have got to try the crack sauce (the creamy jalapeño dip). I used to want to drink this as my only sustenance, it was that good. I bragged about it to my friend. We got it and it wasn't green and it tasted exactly like a thin ranch dressing (my friend thought it was an actual ranch dip). There was absolutely zero jalapeño, zero cilantro, pure ranch. I even asked the waiter if they had changed the recipe, nope. You couldn't have convinced me before I walked in that crack sauce would ever be different in any way. That is been the only consistent thing with Chuy's since I've been coming here. The disappointment is still with me. So, after that embarrassment, we got our food and it was super mediocre, nothing to write home about. Oh, I forgot that we ordered the queso and it tasted so off and was literally cold. I don't normally send things back, but I told him to take that back and take it off the bill, I wasn't paying for it. Chuy's is not worth it, don't go back, there are so many places that are far better. They must've been bought out by a private equity firm that's why everything is so mid. Last time I ordered from here they forgot my queso but received 2 bags of chips . And my ranch dressing container was placed directly on my rice inside my chuy changa container .
