I can only comment on the margaritas,but man, they are so good! My husband is usually particular about his margaritas and these didn't disappoint. We had them made with Dulce Vida tequila and they tasted just like the ones we make at home. The bartender was awesome and the vibe was relaxing and casual. This is pretty much an institution by now, we go Sundays after our row. Lots of tasty tacos, chips and salsa are good (were better when free and automatic though). Service is great, the outside seating is awesome when the weather's good. As a meat-eater my favorites are #18 (barbacoa) and #7 (carne guisada), but pretty much all the tacos are tasty. I haven't been to Mi Madre's in years and I have no idea why. It's such a solid Austin staple. The food is good, the service is good, the vibes are good. They have a pretty extensive patio and it's typically easy to get a table even on a busy weekend. They have a good drink selection and it's a great location. Very limited parking but you can park in the surrounding neighborhood. Adding it back to the normal rotation for sure! I ordered the 2 Barbacoa taco plate which included 2 corn tortillas which were hard, charro beans that were very spicy with chili powder and Mexican rice, which I had never heard of or eaten. Being from San Antonio, TX Spanish rice is always on the menu, but again I was not in San Antonio, TX. My daughter ordered a 2 taco plate that came with Carne Guisada & fajita tacos. There was no gravy on the carne Guisada taco & the fajita taco was very dry. She ordered queso with chips & the queso was good which included avacado, sour cream, hamburger meat & refried beans. Can't believe this was my first time trying mi madres and I've been here for 6 years. I've heard they have some of the best breakfast tacos in Austin and I have to say, I can see it! The barbacoa and pico taco was my favorite because it was juicy and fatty, but also fresh. I can see these tacos being the best hangover tacos. Would I come here every day for tacos? This is an interesting restaurant that looks as though it has been cobbled together from an old house. Inside this small space you'll find that the floor is not level, less than a dozen tables, five seats at the bar, low ceiling and barely functioning AC. Parking is fairly limited in this area, but at least there's no parking kiosks that I could see. Happy hour is from 4 to 7 T-F, but keep in mind they are closed on Monday. They do have some outside covered seating as well as patio seating in the sun. Chips and salsa are not complementary here ($3 and no refill for us) and the queso is another $11. Unfortunately, most of our chips were broken into small pieces, but they make a good salsa. I also ordered queso, but the Mexican music inside was so loud the waiter did not hear me, so it never arrived. The margaritas here are decent in quality and size, they also have a very good tequila selection at the bar. I enjoyed their take on the beef enchiladas, and their chicken nachos are individually made. Where they lose some points is that on the menu, the nachos are supposed to come with black beans, but instead were made with less healthy refried beans which my wife did not care for. They do make Charro beans in case you want to sub the refried beans. They do offer soppapillas and flan for dessert. It should be mentioned they have a Mezcal bar upstairs. Typically, I rate most Tex-Mex restaurants around three stars, but the food here is a little better than most. Despite some shortcomings on our visit, I'll still give them 4*. Service was attentive. Since this is cherrywood the prices are a tad more gentrified - my taco was about $5. The chips were ok and the salsa was more on the milder side so less chilies and more tomato. I was actually kind of surprised how much I didn't like the vegetarian burrito. It's supposed to come with a Chipotle cream, but it didnt... leaving the burrito very dry. There was no flavor to the burrito at all. When I asked if the beans were vegetarian, I was told "...yeah?" Meaning I think so but I'm too lazy to check and make sure. The service here was wild. I ordered food beforehand and was told that it would take 25 minutes. I pulled up to the location and it was crazy buzy, super small parking lot with a handful of spots. Street parking that was packed up and down every side street. I arrived a little early and had to park a few streets away. By the time I got to the counter to pick up the food I think only 15 minutes had passed since I ordered it and my order was not only finished but packed up and ready with my name on it. These guys for real packed so much flavor in every bite it was crazy with how fast the food was prepared even with a restaurant that was packed shoulder to shoulder. Was coming through Austin from Fredericksburg and my parents suggested this place, which was a great option to meet them as I headed back to dallas! Walked in and was greeted timely by the host and manager! They say me immediately while I waited for my parents. Faith was great, came out smiling when she greeted me. As she brought my drink back, my parents had joined by this time and had remembered them from previous visits, by name!! Mind you, they don't live in Austin, lol, they live in dallas! She was a great server! Chips and salsa came out soon after and they were sooo good! I don't know if they make them in house, but those chips were freakin delish, and I just wanted them to keep coming! I ordered the beef enchiladas and my parents both got one breakfast taco, bacon egg and cheese. The tacos were a great size, and looked yummy, and then enchiladas were fantastic! I got it with the chili con carne and queso on top and it took was packed with me and delish! (Okay, if you could eat something that is awful or could kill you, no five stars.) Mi Madres's is totally solid, so no landmines here. The Horchata is "Best of Class". So they get the five stars. * * * What is so special about the horchata? a) It is homemade. Cinnamon is what makes horchata good. * * * Would you drive all the way up from Houston just to get a really good horchata? I might not drive all the way from Houston. Unassuming place with really good food. We went with the daily special (pork enchiladas) and chicken mole enchiladas. Those two were both damn good - the mole was a darker one and kinda sweet. The pork was soft (not mushy!) and flavorful. The salsa served with the chips was obviously home made, fresh, and mildly garlicky- YUM! (She let us take the table leftovers with us!). She also gave us some of their green salsa (maybe called "Diablo"?) and it's amazing as well. Citrusy and creamy and ... a decent bite to it. It's worth it to mention the tortilla chips- they're very distinctive. Hard to describe, but they have these craters (that pocket a bit more of that red salsa) and a really great taste. She mentioned they're made specifically for them. I don't think we've ever had chips like that! We happened to be there during happy hour so got margaritas with tajin on the rim. Sadly the food didn't excite me the way I'd hoped..I've been here a few times to pick up orders to be delivered and the smells were amazing combine that with the crowd and I expected pure delight. We ordered taco plates and the Saltillo dip and it just was not the taste I'd hoped for/expected. The dip was the best thing, the tacos were a little bland and flavorless. walked into the restaurant to place a to go order on 02/07/2025 at approximately 2:30-2:35PM. I asked to see a menu to go from the bartender who was female appearing. I was looking over the menu and she saw something in my hand and said "I cannot have you in here with your joint in your hand" which was not lit and not illegal and purchased from a smoke shop. The "joint" I had in my hand was delta 8 made from hemp which is legal in the state of texas. I will reiterate it was not lit at all or previously lit and was in my hand down by my waist. I stated "ok, I will put it outside" the waitress told me "yeah, you better" in which I did not respond to. As I was turning around from the bar and walking outside to go put it outside, the waitress cussed at me saying "you fucking" and that is all I want to say. they then proceeded to say "walk into a fucking buisness with an illegal substance" which I stated was legal. I then decided to state "I will take my business elsewhere" and I was berated some more of which I did not respond to. I have been there plenty of times as a customer as I am new to the neighborhood and live around the corner and enjoyed the food. I have never disrespected and smoked, yelled, screamed, or have done anything in violation of patronage, I tip and speak to staff when I order to go and have never been treated this way in my adult life. I have never been so disrespected and treated like I was homeless or smoking or bringing something illegal in my hand/possession. This humiliation was uncalled for, which i also asked. After being cussed at, I stated "I complied with what you asked and you still swear at me?" to which there was no response. I do NOT deserve this humiliation and there needs to be something done about this. I am in tears for how humiliated and disrespected I was. As a result I have had an anxiety attack; I do not bother anybody or deserve this and I get most of my meals to go because of the anxiety of social interactions eating in public. Not only will I not be returning, but I will be looking into further legal action and letting people know of my experience because this was uncalled for on any level. I will say this was my first experience like this at the place and everyone that i've ordered with in the past has been pleasant and respectful.I am a human being and deserved to be treated as such no matter what I am. read more

We come here all the time. Stephanie is a wonderful waitress and recognizes us each time we come in to eat. She even has our order memorized! The food is incredible. I used to come here in the 90's as a student and loved it. The food was always good, the staff kind and prices reasonable. Went here today for the first time since and had a less than great experience. While the food was still good, the service was abysmal. In short, the place was only 25% full yet it took forever for us to get menus, we never received the plates we requested for our chips and queso, it took asking three times once our food arrived to get full silverware, nobody really checked in on us, and it took around twenty minutes to pay our bill after we requested it. I would say it was understaffed but there were four staff alone in the particular room we were in. Very disappointed. I would say next time I'd get delivery or take-out but I doubt they deliver to New York and I'm not driving from NY to Texas for Tex-Mex when the place on my block at home has food that's just as good. read more

This place was very good. Let's start talking about the chips, salsa and guac. Super fresh chips. They were so thin and crispy. The salsa was the bomb. The guac was very good, maybe need a bit of salt if you like the salty taste. I great enjoyed them. I got carne guisado for entree. I don't know why but it reminded me of braised short ribs. So delicious and tender. Additionally, the rice that went with it was perfectly cooked. We also got the hibiscus drink as well. Wish there was more hibiscus flavor to it.
