First of all, Chulita was by far my favourite restaurant I came across during my stay in LA. The amazing presentation from the street drew me in and the vibe was amazing from greetings at the entrance. I believe it was Daria (not sure if I spelt that correct) was my server who took the time to explain some of the amazing features. She suggested I sit at the bar as I was alone in business and introduced me to the bartenders. Being Canadian she made it a point to one of the bartenders that liked hockey and introduced me. I was impressed with her knowledge of the various entree's so I asked her to pick my main and whatever drink she thought would go great with it. I couldn't have had a better meal as I don't normally order fish but the pan seared sea bass. Pescado Zarandeado was amazing. Cooked perfectly and paired with a hibiscus margarita that was on par with the meal. Thank you to the kitchen and owners along with the 2 servers behind the bar and Daria for such a great experience. I liked it so much I came back a few days later for tacos which were also amazing. The service was great again even though it was a very busy evening. I will be back and I will suggest this as a must to any friends traveling to the Venice area. read more

My friend and I came here on cinco de mayo, so it was very busy. We managed to get a seat at the bar, which was in large part due to the hostess. Bar seating is first come, first served. Because it was a busy night, it was difficult to order. The bar staff was slammed which is understandable. We ordered the guacamole which came out in minutes. I love the chips that come with it. They're bigger, so you break them apart to eat. We also ordered the tacos, since it was taco Tuesday and cinco. I ordered the barbacoa and tinga tacos. They were messy. Literally juiced flowing down my wrist. But delicious at the same time. I hate messy food, so that was the only unpleasant part. Great, helpful staff. Love how they source from the farmer's market and use the same ingredients in various ways across the menu. Sweet potato taquitos were amazing. One of my favorite dishes in LA. Gem salad was super fresh. Wish they had an alternative dressing, but the server was super helpful and brought me a plate of options, like vinegars and lime. Tacos were good portions and didn't skimp on the meat. We enjoyed the steak, fish, cauliflower, and cactus tacos. Love how they use nutritional yeast (truly underrated ingredient). Would be great if they had a few more lighter NA drink options, that are light on sugar, like a Topo Chico refresher or spritz. Would also enjoy some crudités to dip with salsa/guac. I dined here with three other friends for dinner and really enjoyed my experience. The service was really great, as the server was accommodating to all our allergies and even brought out extra chips to go with leftover ceviche for me to pack up! We had the coliflor fundido to start, which I am so glad we got, because it was my absolute favorite of the night. I ordered the ceviche for my main and really enjoyed this too. The fish was fresh tasting and the veggies were crunchy and complimented the fish perfectly. As far as the food goes, my biggest regret is not trying the tacos. My friends ordered the barbacoa, nopal, and steak tacos and loved these. Overall, the ambiance is really cozy and beautiful too. It has an indoor outdoor feel, which I can imagine is wonderful when it's warmer, but can be chilly during this time of year. My last experience at Chulita for one of my vegan friends birthday was a 10/10. The service and ambience is always amazing, we make reservations but they also do take walk-ins. This is a fave of ours, came here for my birthday weekend. We got guac to start, then shared the quesadilla with barbacoa, pescado taco, barbacoa taco, and hanger steak taco for our mains which were all so good. The pescado wasn't my favorite, but that's because it had a spicy sauce that wasn't my personal favorite but my boyfriend said this was his favorite one! We always get the churros which are gluten free and vegan and they're so good, although the sauce was thinner than usual and seemed not as good, but maybe it was just an off day. The servers were chill and the vibe is always great here although it is indoor/outdoor and it was a very cold night so I kept my jacket on to stay warmer. read more

On a rainy day and although Chilita in Venice has a beautiful patio, I made my way to this restaurant on Rose Avenue after attending a Venice artist studio open house. The outdoor patio was closed and I sat comfortably inside facing the large, beautiful bar and indoor dining area. It was a Sunday so they handed me a brunch menu along with the regular menu and dessert menu. Chilita's offers a Novo Mexican cuisine that is both familiar and populated by vegan/GF offerings with unique sauces. I ordered the following: QUESADILLA Heirloom Corn Tortillas, Queso Oaxaca, Pipián de Calabaza, Crema, Avocado Salsa + ADD BARBACOA PUMPKIN PIE SPICED CHURROS Vegan/Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie Spiced Churros, Almond Milk, Salted Coconut Coffee Caramel Sauce The Quesadillas came three fold and with such a delicious wet sauce that each bite with the barbacoa was smilingly tasty. I ate 2/3rds and took one home which allowed for another meal and for me to eat the special pumpkin churros with caramel sauce that probably is meant for 2 but somehow didn't have a chance for my gluttony. I took my time savoring these strips of light GF dough with a caramel sauce that could make a jalapeno sing with sweetness. Visited Chulita recently and had a pleasant experience overall. I ordered the quesadilla, which was good but not especially memorable. The quality of the ingredients is definitely there, the flavors are a little more dependent on the dish itself. The ambiance is pretty good and the service is good as well. One annoying thing is they were very quick to get everything out of the way, it felt like they were rushing us a bit, but I'm not holding that against them in my review. 5/5 - Coliflor Fundido: definitely one of my favorite things on the menu is the cauliflower fundito, it has a really nice texture and is the perfect appetizer with a large portion size for 2-4 people depending on how hungry you are. 4/5 - Vegan Mushroom Asada Taco: pretty good, a little over hyped in my opinion. However, if you take some of the cauliflower fundido and add it in, this becomes a 5/5 haha 3/5 - Pescado Taco: It had a great sauce and the fish seemed very fresh and light, but it was pretty average as far as fish tacos go, nothing really memorable about it. I would skip this next time. 5/5 - Vegan Chocolate Pudding: dark chocolate pudding with a delicious raspberry topping and a nice little crumble for added texture. Enjoyed the West Adams location so much, we had to check out the Venice location! Cocktails were delicious, I can't remember the name of mine atm but it had cucumber juice in it-- thought it was well balanced and refreshing! Had their sea bass dish for dinner and LOVED the char on the fish. The cauliflower puree it rested on was a wonderful creamy texture, and the greens balanced out the dish over all. They had a handful of vegan options, so it's very plant friendly. There was a different dessert option in this location from their West Adams (not pictured), which was the churros vs the tres leches waffles we enjoyed previously -- the dipping sauce was water-y in texture and kept dripping all over my clothes, and the churros themselves were not all consistent in their crunch/chewy dough ratio. It's a preference thing at the end of the day, so maybe that's your jam! Our bartenders were awesome, SALSA IS BOMB. Loved that the guacamole wasn't salty like I find it to be in most spots visited. Went here Sunday evening for dinner for my husband's birthday. A good amount of people dining. We were sat at a small table near the bar and the hallway leading to the bathroom. I found the area to be a little cramped, but at least no one was sitting next to us. We tried the salad and the Japanese sweet potato taquitos. I thought they were average; my husband enjoyed the taquitos because he's a big sweet potato fan. I tried a fish taco and a vegan carnitas taco - both were good. Very cool spot in Venice! Vibes/aesthetic are 5/5. We came for dessert only, which was a vegan mousse and vegan/gf pumpkin spices churros. Three people shared these, and we were all satisfied. (Would def order one for two people rather than one per person). None of us could taste the pumpkin in the churros. The churros themselves were otherwise pretty good, both flavor and texture wise. The sauce was cold which surprised us all; besides that, I thought the dipping sauce was fine but my two friends actively disliked it. But we didn't know whether they'd be serving their Brunch menu of their All Day menu...because their website doesn't explain when each of the menus is available. We called the number on Chulita's website. But (a) they won't answer the phone, (b) you can't leave a message, and (c) they won't call you back. Furthermore, they don't have an email address on their website. That is, Chulita refuses to engage with the public unless you're actually in their restaurant. We went somewhere else to eat. When we walked by Chulita it looked like they had a lot of room for us because only one table in the restaurant had diners. If they'd been reachable by phone or email, our party of 8 would've dined there for our first time and we would've more than doubled their number of guests at that hour. read more

Their tacos are tasty and flavorful - I ordered the cauliflower Al pastor and steak tacos which were so loaded that two became four. Blown away! The only reason i haven't given it 5 stars (yet) is that I haven't tried more than 3 items on the menu. So let me give a quick shout out to the highlights: 1) Pescado (fish) taco Delish. Definitely one of the best I've had, ranking a solid 9/10 for all the best fish tacos I've had in LA. 2) Tinga de Pollo (shredded chicken) taco OMG..... this was the 11/10. Probably THE best chicken taco I've ever had. Sure it's drippy and juicy, but so is amazing sex. If this is the only taco you'll ever have, you've lived life to its fullest. 3) Pumpkin pie spiced churros At first, I thought they looked like chemo-therapy shishito peppers, but all that initial hesitation disappeared when I dipped them in the salted coconut-coffee caramel sauce. Very solid 8.5/10, and an excellent finish to my lunch. Service is impeccable. We were served by Tony, who made our entire lunch felt like we were at his house. Since the restaurant is half indoors and half outdoors, the AC didn't do much to help, which made it a bit hard to fully enjoy the meal. The VEGAN QUESO & CHIPS were surprisingly good--I expected to notice a clear difference between regular and vegan queso, but if I hadn't been told, I probably wouldn't have known.
