Decided to take a stroll down the piers after managing my way through the crowds at Pier 39. I often go to Boudin for my clam chowder, but decided to try other ones around the area. Happen to run into this one first. Place has great reviews on Yelp, so told myself "Why not?" - plus, I've never really had disappointing chowder within the pier. We decided to order the crab chowder -- I mean scratch that. They ran out of it. I mean to say... we decided to settle with their regular clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. I have some mixed feelings about this place. Honestly their food was great. The group I went with ordered a little bit of everything and it was all pretty solid. Their seating wasn't the best (it got a bit crowded for me while I was eating) however this is on one of the more popular pier spots. My partner and I arrived at around noon on a Friday to eat some food here, so upon our arrival the service we had gotten was fast and friendly. We shared a single entree together since we weren't really too hungry. We finished our meal in about 15 minutes and then started our horribly long wait to leave. Our waiter seemed to forget about our table as I noticed he would help other tables and serve them/cash their tab in before we could get taken care of-some tables who arrived after us. After waiting around 30 mins after we finished our meal, our waiter finally puts our check down and ignores the fact I had my card in my hand for him. At this point, we were sat for about an hour. We wait another 15 minutes for him to pick up our check and card. He comes around and mumbles something under his breath as he SLAMS his hand on our table to grab our check. We were the closest table sat next to the register and I was expecting him to slide our card and turn back around so we can leave; instead our waiter brings my card to the bar with him. My party and I were getting impatient as we had other things to do that day so I took the initiative to stand up and ask another waiter where my card and receipt is since we had to go. This waiter, whom was bald and had glasses cuts me off to say that his "buddy will help me". He continues to tell me to "sit down and relax" and that "the service will be a lot more slower than I will be used to since it's so busy". At this point I feel furious and embarrassed. I look over to see our original waiter making 4 drinks behind the bar instead of returning my card and tab to me. My card was left out on the counter, susceptible to anyone taking it!!! The service was unfriendly and my party was simply forgotten about. First of all it's the pier you can't go wrong with most of these places. This place has been here for a long time...for as long as I can remember. Little quaint place nestled on the heart of the majority of the restaurants across this infamous strip. We went on a Sunday. We were a party of ten and had reservations to do the Alcatraz tour at 1. We arrived along the pier at 11:30. We followed the link provided by the cruise company to search for nearby parking. The first garage we tried was closed. Then we went to another parking lot almost directly in front of Pier 33 where we needed to be. So many open spots we were so excited and then we saw a bran new Chevy Suburban with it's back window busted out and it's owner just getting to the scene of the crime. That was enough to convince us we needed to find elsewhere to park, neither myself or sister wanted to come back to our cars broken into. So on the hunt we went. We past a few lots and it seemed someone was on a rampage and more cars broken into. We defintely did not want to park in the garage because we felt that was even worse. Then we came upon Boudin and the parking lot behind it. Seemed busy and there was an attendant on duty. So we parked and were told Boudin's and Chowder Hut validated 1 hour. So that is what solidified where we would come back to eat after our tour. Off we went. After about 3.5 hours and 9,000 steps we were all ready for some substantial grub! This place provides outside dining and there were a lot of shade so it was perfect. We ordered the following: 1. Chowder in a Boudin's sourdough bread bowl. This was creamy. My son and I absolutely love the soup soaked parts of that sourdough goodness. Although the flavor was there I felt there could have been more clams and stuff. It seemed as if there was so much potatoes in it. I probably should have opted for the crab chowder to ensure I got my fill of seafood. I don't even think there was clams in my portion unless they minced them :-(. $11 2. 2 Wharf Burgers. 1 for my husband and the other for my son. They were pretty large in size and filled with lettuce and tomatoe on top of a bed of fries for $12 was decent. 3. Garlic Fries: my eldest son is doing a vegetarian thing on most days. So all he wanted was garlic fries and the lid to my chowder bread bowl. 4. Calamari: I didn't realize the calamari came on a bed of fries or else I wouldn't have ordered an extra side. The calamari was crispy and well battered. Totally hit the spot. All in all I paid $68, which was udner what I had expected. Someone walks around sweeping and cleaning up so it's maintained. There is also a restroom in the back and this place does validate. You just give them your ticket and they stamp it. Here is what kind of irritated me. When we asked the parking attendant if we could get our parking validated he said yes, because it's posted that it's $12/hr. We had parked there a little over 4 hours. When we went to pay before walking back to our cars the machine was registered $60 so we called the same attendant over whom stated after 4 hours it didn't matter whether you got your pass validated or not. So BEWARE of that. Not Chowder Hut's fault BUT with our party of 10 we may not have opted to eat there had we known it wasn't going to matter. read more

Tables at the bar, in the shade, with umbrellas, full sun, and at fire pits. The food was hot and tasty. The drinks were reasonably priced and delicious! Pretty much every restaurant offers them, but this place happened to have seating, which sealed the deal for me. The chowder was fantastic! Ditto for the sourdough bread. My order was prepared very quickly and the portion was commiserate with the price. This restaurant offers other things as well. Fried calamari, fried shrimp, crab salad...
