I had a great experience today! I was seated right away. I ordered Clam Chowder, Calamari, and Fish and Chips. I got the smaller portion of the Clam Chowder but it was the perfect amount because it was a lot of food! It came out right away after placing the order, came out hot. It was really good! Next, we got the calamari which was pretty good too. I would probably try another appetizer next time but I would recommend the calamari if you've never tried it. Lastly, we got the fan favorite, Fish and Chips. They came out super fresh. I liked the tartar sauce that was served with it and paired really well with the fish. Great experience. Fast service. They have a nice selection for the menu. Service was okay, I asked for the oysters and a cup of chowder and she came out with an oyster meal. (Fried oysters and fries) The waitress didnt seem to be very happy or welcoming, hope she likes her job?! Food tasted good. Need to come again to order different items. We were in town for the weekend and it was later than the usual dinner time hour. This place served our needs. We had 4 hungry appetites from a long drive on the road. The wind sure was blowing when we got to town so we were a bit chilled to the bone, to say the least. We walked in and were greeted by some friendly staff. We were seated immediately and provided menus. We placed our orders and food was delivered in a timely manner. There were other customers, it certainly wasn't dead on a Saturday night, one day after Christmas. Good sign. We tried the clam chowder. Wished I would have gotten a bowl of it. One of the best clam chowder soups that I've had in awhile. So flavorful and chunky! Will order a bowl next time! Chicken stips were hot, serving size was reasonable. They were decent. Nothing special just your typical chicken strips. The fries were crispy delicious! Fish tacos were good and tasty. Hamburger for the granddaughter with just ketchup. She ate most of it so it must have been good. She is not a food. I'm not sure how that's possible...I love to eat and try new stuff! Would I return to the Chowder House? And the flavor....excellent!! I had the fish and chips - I ordered the 3 piece which I ended up sharing because the pieces were large and it came with large potato fries. My husband got the shrimp tacos which were also quite large and filling. The prices were also very reasonable and the serving portion's plentiful. Their clam chowder is outstanding: rich, creamy, and packed with generous, tender clams instead of just potatoes. I also have to RAVE about their golden fries. They recently changed the cut, and it's brilliant -- a perfect hybrid between thick, hearty fries and the delicate bite of a potato chip. They're crisp, well-seasoned, and genuinely addicting. The service here is another standout. Our waiter was attentive & friendly, making sure we had everything we needed without ever being intrusive. Super fresh & perfectly cooked calamari. Chips were a cool shape that added to the mouth feel/texture. Shrimp tacos were also pretty good. Chowder was okay. I prefer Mo's over this chowder. It was overly creamy & lacked texture. Fish and chips were meh. No variety in the type of fish and the breading was subpar. The Newport Chowder Bowl at Nye Beach AGAIN wins our votes for the BEST Clam Chowder on the Oregon Coast! Our go-to order is two bowls of their wonderful thick and creamy clam chowder ($8.50 each), and shared an order of Garlic Onion Cheese Bread ($8.00). I also ordered two-pieces of fried Cod on the side, and the fish and the Tartar Sauce are Excellent. (The Fish and Chips always look so good, but we're here for the Chowder). Lunch was Beyond Delicious! We always wait until mid-afternoon to go, usually a weekday, just to miss the lineup at 11am, when they open, and the lunch crush. The restaurant is neat and organized, comfortably cozy, very family friendly, the restrooms clean, and ... really hasn't changed since the awful fire, and thankfully reopening in 2004. Plenty of street and/or parking lot parking, except on weekends and holidays and during summer :) Service was friendly, courteous, quick and accurate (Thank You, Sara, Great Job!), which is hard to do in a restaurant as busy as the Newport Chowder Bowl. During our visit to Newport OR. we asked our hotel front desk clerk, "Who has the best Clam Chowder in town?" We were told, "Hands down, The Chowder Bowl." Let me tell y'all the desk clerk was not wrong. The Chowder Bowl's Chowder was delicious. First of all it was served HOT. When I'm served a bowl of soup I want it served so hot I have to blow on it so I don't scorch my tongue. It wasn't too thick or too thin. It had a good balance of clams to potatoes. Honestly it holds its own against some of the best clam chowder I've tried like at Ada's Fishhouse and Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach CA. Another thing I Loved about it was what it DIDN'T have in it - bacon. For me, bacon ruins chowder. I want to taste clams, not bacon. With the Chowder Bowl I could taste the clams. Mmm, mmm, mmh! Disappointing First Meal at the Beach We were really looking forward to our first meal at the coast, especially on a chilly, blustery May evening. Hoping for something warm and comforting, we ordered a bowl of clam chowder and a bowl of chili, thinking they'd hit the spot. Unfortunately, they really missed the mark. On the positive side, service was friendly and efficient. The hostess let me choose where we sat, which I appreciated, and our server was attentive throughout. The food also came out quickly. But once we started eating, we were both disappointed. The chowder was warm but gritty and lacked flavor--not what I expected from a place with so many rave reviews. The chili was just slightly warm and had a strangely sweet note with minimal depth. The garlic onion bread that was highly recommended in reviews was incredibly oily and unappealing. As a former restaurant owner, I try to be very fair with my reviews because I know the weight they carry. I also know some things can be fixed, but in this case, the issues were more basic--texture, temperature, and flavor. We didn't mention the food to our server because we didn't think it could be salvaged and didn't feel like trying something else. She did ask if we wanted boxes (we said no), but didn't ask why we were leaving so much food behind. That felt like a missed opportunity to check in and possibly turn things around. Overall, it was a just-okay dinner. Reasonably priced at $40 including tip, but definitely not the experience we hoped for based on glowing Yelp reviews. October 20, 2025 One thing to know about me - if I'm at the coast and fish and chips is on the menu, that's what I'm getting. I ordered the three piece - three flaky, lightly breaded chunks (about the size of my palm) of fish served piping hot, perfectly cooked, not greasy at all. Their chips are a cross between a potato chip and fries, never seen anything like them. They also were perfectly cooked and not greasy. Tartar sauce had a good tang. The cocktail sauce (for the chips) had a nice horseradishy kick. (Why don't I think to order cocktail sauce for my fries more often?!) A few of our table of six had the side salad. Looked very fresh with red and green leaf lettuce (not a single speck of iceberg lettuce) with crisp cucumber, tomato, and red onion. Everyone but me got the clam chowder and proclaimed it good. (I like clam chowder, but was saving all my stomach space for the F&C) Second thing to know about me - if there's bread pudding on the menu, I'm getting it. Ordered it to go. It took up the entire container; the bread pudding itself was moist and flavorful and the hard sauce was harding - a/k/a pretty boozy. 10/10 We were a table of senior ladies. The server was EXTREMELY kind and patient with our many changes/requests (regretfully, I didn't get his name, he was great). Service was prompt (we came in before the lunch rush), orders and separate tickets were were all distributed to the correct person - kind of a miracle with all the changes we made :). We stopped in on a weekend late afternoon for an early dinner and sat on their patio, which is cozy, tucked away, and dog-friendly. Service was efficient and helpful. They have a fairly comprehensive menu and feature their clam chowder and fish. We ordered a sourdough bowl of chowder which was priced like a full entree and unfortunately the bread was super tough, like it had been microwaved, and was inedible. So maybe go for a cup or regular bowl and get something else on the side? The cheese melt fish sandwich was fresh and the fish was good, though a bit heavy on the breading. The potato bits appetizer was a hit with the ranch dipping sauce; potatoes were shaped into a ball with some seasoning, peppers and cheese inside and deep fried. The fried shrimp and chips were yummy, with the slim cut fries done in traditional UK style. The wine and beer list isn't super comprehensive but the choices were all good and reasonably priced. Overall a decent place to grab a bite near the beach, though no view. Lots of fried offerings. Prices are sometimes a little high for what they offer, but it's the coast, after all. We have picked up takeout here two or three times now. The lady on the phone is friendly. The food was ready when they said it would be. Parking can be rough ( I can only imagine what it's like in the summer, shudders). The food is very good and maybe a little bit more reasonably priced than some of its counterparts. All my 21 year old wants to eat anymore is fish. That can get to be somewhat expensive especially if the BF is around too. These 20-21year olds can EAT. Wow! My take - the chowder and the fried seafood items are very good. The fries are yummy, a bit different than typical fries, kind of crescent shaped crispy slivers of potato but fluffy inside. The sauces are good. My kid has eaten the Smoked Salmon Caesar wrap every time. It's big and it lasts two meals. It also has avocado, parmesan, and salmon in it which is my kid's Holy Food Trinity. The kid loves it. The Boyfriend of the kid had the Po' Boy and liked it but complained it had too much remoulade. Maybe get it on the side. We all like this place and will be back. read more

Better than good, but great would be a bit of a stretch. Its namesake chowder was good, quite good, but not the best you will find on the Oregon coast. The fish and chips were very near the top with a light breading and succulent fish - 98% fish, 2% batter. The menu is heavy on seafood as you'd expect but still plenty of options for the burger kids and vegans. Had our two dogs so were seated understandably on the patio. The service was a 9.5 after being seated. It was a delightful summer day with tons of tourists in town so we had to wait about 20 minutes. No big deal. And worth it. Prices are fair, better than most . Parking is scarce on the street but a paid lot of only $2/hr is about 250 feet away. read more

Unexpectedly great place. See photos. Mid-week, around 2 pm, non-tourist time, few people in the restaurant. Great service, and they kept the refills of the coffee coming. How many places on the coast serve clam chowder? How many restaurants deliver? This gem does. Clam chowder was rich, thick, and had lots of clams. Not an overabundance of potatoes either, perfect balance. So good. For my taste, I don't like it to be too fishy tasting. The chowder bowl hit my taste preference, better than other well-known seafood establishments on the coast. See photos of the menu. I got the bread bowl option, and yes, I ate the whole thing, bread and all. I was so full. The coffee was good, and they had 3 options for the sugar selection: reg, pink, and yellow. The creamer was non-flavored. The prices seemed to be moderate, and proportions were reasonable. The side of fries were more abundant than in some places we visited. So, yes, this is well worth the visit to a local seafood place for the clam chowder, fries, and coffee. The establishment has a small-town beachside charm. Slumgolian Chowder Cannonball. When I saw this on the menu here, I had to just go for it. When I saw the term 'Slumgolian', I first thought of some sort of villain from Tolkein's Middle-Earth. Like maybe an Uruk-hai with a serpent head would be a Slumgolian warrior. But - that's not it. Slumgolian, as it turns out, is a spelling variant of the more widely known 'slumgullion', which I would argue is not well known at all, either. A slumgullion is apparently an Americanized version of the Hungarian Goulash. Yet - it's not really that, either. In the context of the Chowder Bowl, the Slumgolian is their classic chowder topped with some Oregon pink shrimp, which I have to say is just a great add to the mix, and nothing like a goulash (or an Uruk-hai, if that wasn't clear). And, the "Cannonball", if that wasn't obvious, is the round, breadbowl container for the chowder, fresh from the Yaquina Baking Company, and what I think is the best part of this overall dish. A restaurant's namesake dish had better be good, and if you're coming here for the Chowder, it's the Slumgolian Chowder Cannonball variant that I would recommend. The bread was a definite 10/10, with perfect texture and absorption level of the chowder. The shrimp addition was a great way to add some oomph to an otherwise very good (but not lifechangingly good) chowder. I personally prefer my chowders a little thicker, though the clam amounts were solid, and didn't have any sandiness to them (my big pet peeve in chowders). Service was, well...serviceable. I think it was a slow day, as the crew started cleaning the floors and putting up furniture about 30m before they were closed. They seemed to be doing a brisk takeout business (all chowder orders, from what I could hear), probably catering to locals, as we did visit in what seems to be offseason. The menu also has a variety of seafood basket options (fish & chips, shrimp & chips, clam strips & chips, oysters & chips, you get the drift). In summary, you'll be good if you're looking here for chowder, and if you do that, go Slumgolian. read more
