This place is phenomenal what a treasure. I wish I knew about it sooner. The food and service are both good. The taste is outstanding and good portion size. The restaurant is nice and clean. The patio is dog friendly which is a nice touch. I would highly recommend this place. It is one of the best clam chowders I have tasted.

Super clean restaurant. Staff was pleasant and attentive. We had a cup of chowder, fish and chips, fried clams and steamer clams. The fried clams were fresh and not chewy at all. The chowder was rich and very tasty. Highly recommend!!!

We were looking for a good local place that served fish and chips and we found one! We were greeted and seated immediately. After ordering. We didn't wait long before our food was served, piping hot! And the flavor....excellent!! I had the fish and chips - I ordered the 3 piece which I ended up sharing because the pieces were large and it came with large potato fries. My husband got the shrimp tacos which were also quite large and filling. The prices were also very reasonable and the serving portion's plentiful. We would definitely recommend Chowder Bowl!

I told my husband I wanted a simple, fresh bay shrimp salad and this is the place he chose for me. I feel like this is where the locals go (regularly!) and the lucky tourist. Very reasonable prices, variety of options and filling portions. Super casual and comfy atmosphere with two areas of indoor seating and a protected, dog friendly outdoor patio area. There is limited street parking, but a public lot just down the street towards the beach. Super friendly and sincere staff.

This has always been my go-to spot for chowder whenever I'm in the area -- and it's easy to see why. Their clam chowder is outstanding: rich, creamy, and packed with generous, tender clams instead of just potatoes. I also have to RAVE about their golden fries. They recently changed the cut, and it's brilliant -- a perfect hybrid between thick, hearty fries and the delicate bite of a potato chip. They're crisp, well-seasoned, and genuinely addicting. The service here is another standout. Our waiter was attentive & friendly, making sure we had everything we needed without ever being intrusive. The ambiance is always pleasant -- clean, welcoming, and just the right kind of relaxed for a casual meal or a quick bite. I can't recommend this place highly enough -- it's worth a stop just for that phenomenal clam chowder!

Service is adequate. Our server wasn't super friendly and seemed very impatient when we were deciding what to order. Food is okay. Lots of hits and misses. Calamari and chips were the best thing. Super fresh & perfectly cooked calamari. Chips were a cool shape that added to the mouth feel/texture. Shrimp tacos were also pretty good. Chowder was okay. I prefer Mo's over this chowder. It was overly creamy & lacked texture. Fish and chips were meh. No variety in the type of fish and the breading was subpar. Had nice dog friendly patio seating with a sheet overtop to block the direct sun. Seating inside looked nice as well. There's a public parking lot down the road where the restaurant is. Overall, it was a decent place to get dinner but I wouldn't go back.

The Newport Chowder Bowl at Nye Beach AGAIN wins our votes for the BEST Clam Chowder on the Oregon Coast! Our go-to order is two bowls of their wonderful thick and creamy clam chowder ($8.50 each), and shared an order of Garlic Onion Cheese Bread ($8.00). I also ordered two-pieces of fried Cod on the side, and the fish and the Tartar Sauce are Excellent. (The Fish and Chips always look so good, but we're here for the Chowder). Lunch was Beyond Delicious! We always wait until mid-afternoon to go, usually a weekday, just to miss the lineup at 11am, when they open, and the lunch crush. The restaurant is neat and organized, comfortably cozy, very family friendly, the restrooms clean, and ... really hasn't changed since the awful fire, and thankfully reopening in 2004. Plenty of street and/or parking lot parking, except on weekends and holidays and during summer :) Service was friendly, courteous, quick and accurate (Thank You, Sara, Great Job!), which is hard to do in a restaurant as busy as the Newport Chowder Bowl. A Coastal Classic! Highly recommended, Five-Well-Deserved-Stars.

Sat outside on the deck because we had our pup with us. Lovely ambiance. I asked for a replacement for fries with my oysters as trying to cut carbs, they offered coleslaw. Grilled oysters were well made. Happy

A heaping cup & heaping bowl of delicious New England Clam Chowder w/ black pepper added to the bowl before snapping picture.

During our visit to Newport OR. we asked our hotel front desk clerk, "Who has the best Clam Chowder in town?" We were told, "Hands down, The Chowder Bowl." Let me tell y'all the desk clerk was not wrong. The Chowder Bowl's Chowder was delicious. First of all it was served HOT. When I'm served a bowl of soup I want it served so hot I have to blow on it so I don't scorch my tongue. It wasn't too thick or too thin. It had a good balance of clams to potatoes. Honestly it holds its own against some of the best clam chowder I've tried like at Ada's Fishhouse and Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach CA. Another thing I Loved about it was what it DIDN'T have in it - bacon. For me, bacon ruins chowder. I want to taste clams, not bacon. With the Chowder Bowl I could taste the clams. Mmm, mmm, mmh! OBTW, the service was great too.

We were a bit disappointed in the food, it was lackluster and forgettable. However the service was very friendly and fast.

We came in for lunch and had an amazing experience. The restaurant is cute and coastal. Service was good and fast. The food was delicious and comforting. For an appetizer, we shared the chili fries. I love that they don't put the chili on top of the fries. The chili was rich and delicious and I loved the shape of the fries. For my entree, I got the fish and chips. The fish was so flaky and flavorful. The batter was well seasoned and not too greasy. We had Shirley Temples, which was a fun menu item. Overall, it was a great experience! I'd love to come back again!

Our vote for #1 chowder on the coast!
    Kim T.

Yum!! Two of our favorite IPAs on draft (Breakside & Beak Breaker), and the chowder?? We are currently making our way through taste-testing ALL the coast chowders and this spot just took #1! The consistency was just right, and the abundance (but not too much) of thinly sliced clam was perfection! Added pat of butter on top adds to the delectable decadence. So tasty!! Patio vibe was just right and server was great. Nice work!

Nate 2026 Newport, Oregon…read more Came here based on recommendations from somebody in Bend, Oregon, and a local. I will start by saying I was not impressed. We had a reservation and they took us in a few minutes early and sat us upstairs. We sat near the window that overlooks the harbor and could see it from our table. Very pretty. There is a bar area and other tables that are away from the window that don't have the same view. When we were approached by the waitress, she informed us that they were out of Dungeness crab. Our reservation was at 6:15 PM. Seems a bit odd that a town known for Dungeness crab and the restaurant doesn't have it during peak dinner hours. My husband ordered a cup of clam chowder, and I ordered a cup of the Dungeness crab soup. I loved the creaminess of my soup. However, it was not served hot. Also, there were so many shells in my soup that every bite I had to remove one from my mouth. I do believe that the roux sauce had too much flour and was not mixed well. The clam chowder was not creamy, but had a good flavor. Chunks of carrot and celery. Both soups were served with a portion of bread. The bread was good. We shared the salmon dish. We asked our waitress if we could have the peas on the side as my husband has an allergy to peas. She was quick to tell me that there would be no substitutions. I informed her I was merely asking for the peas to put on a separate dish when brought to the table. She said that she would need to clear it with the kitchen first. Apparently, they approved, as the peas were served on the side. We did enjoy the salmon. It is cooked, medium rare. However, the middle of the salmon fillet was more rare. The buttery sauce was delicious and the asparagus was cooked very well. The mushrooms were delicious. The restaurant is very casual. The outside is not much to look at. The service was fine, but not exceptional. The food was good, but my expectations were so much higher for all of the accolades I had heard prior to dining. They add an automatic tip of 20% to every tab. Then on the bill, they politely ask for an additional gratuity. See the picture of the reason for their 20% gratuity on each bill in the photos that I have attached. I would give this restaurant four stars. It is a B rating for what should be an A restaurant.

For my main course, I had the combination halibut, king Salmon, and tuna. They were very generous with the portions. The fish was delicious. The halibut and the salmon were tender and juicy. The tuna was just a tiny bit chewier, but it was also very good. The fish was lightly breaded, although a few of the pieces. Were a bit darker than the others. That took away from it just a tiny tiny bit. But overall, successful. The tartar sauce was very good, rich and tangy. Instead of the fries, I finished with the coleslaw. It was not overdressed, and I liked the dressing. It was a sweeter dressing than your standard mayonnaise, but not overly sweet. It was an excellent coleslaw. For all of the quality food I got, the price was very reasonable. I would come back the next time. I'm in town. Thank you!

People who came without a reservation were told that there's about an hour wait or they could sit at the bar level on the first floor. Service was great and we were lucky enough to sit by the window overlooking the sea lions, the water, and the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Food wise, it was mostly 5 star. I'll start with the thing that wasn't, and that was the deviled eggs (you get 3) with a lightly fried shrimp. The shrimp was overcooked, lukewarm, and didn't really add anything. But other than that, everything else was really good. The highlight was the Umpqua oysters on the half shell. We went through a dozen and a half. The oysters are sweeter, no briny. They're not huge but not tiny either like Kusshi oysters. It came with 3 different sauces. Another highlight was the whole dungenous crab...so fresh.
