Nothing beats a really good buffet and this on definitely is one of the very best in Memphis! The food is always fresh and plenty. The bar is clean and food appealing. Dined here on a Thursday evening around 6 PM and had a great experience. There was no wait when we arrived and we were immediately seated. The buffet was very clean and fully stocked. Once seated, we were asked for our drink orders, which came out quickly. The buffet offered a wide variety of both American and Chinese dishes, and everything looked fresh and inviting. There was an impressive selection--fried chicken, baked chicken, BBQ chicken, bourbon chicken, pork chops, hamburger steaks, neckbones, yams, mashed potatoes, greens, pinto beans, green beans, cabbage... honestly, just about anything you could think of. My first plate had neckbones, pinto beans, cornbread, and a hamburger steak--everything was delicious. My 2-year-old really enjoyed the spaghetti and fried chicken, while my son loved the hot wings and rolls. It was truly a delight, and they even had a salad bar. The only downside was the dessert bar, which was pretty underwhelming. There were mostly small tea cakes, along with some cobblers and Jell-O. Unfortunately, there was no ice cream, which definitely disappointed my 2-year-old. The waitresses were attentive, frequently clearing finished plates and offering refills. If you like variety, you should definitely grab a bite here. The food is usually good when I go and I would definitely be the one eating all of the peach cobbler crust. The food is always hot and you can catch some pretty interesting dishes sometimes. Staff is always friendly and attentive. As for the environment, it reminds me of an old cafeteria. It could definitely stand some renovations, but overall not a bad place to grab a bite (dine in or takeout). read more

I genuinely do not know how this place has 4.2 stars. It's a Chinese buffet that has more "Southern Cooking" than Chinese food, half of it is cold, the other half just wasn't that good, and I could tell almost everything I ate was frozen. I am pretty upset that I paid $46 for overpriced garbage for me and my wife. Oh, and to top it all off, the waitress made me show her my receipt before she would even take our drink orders. The actual restaurant itself was pretty dirty. There was some kind of weird black stuff on all of the yellow walls in the foyer. Floors were dirty too. I hadn't been there in a while but I decided to give it one more shot! I should have gone somewhere else! The place has continued to get worse since the first review that I gave 7 years ago! I got there when they opened and the only fried chicken they had was wings and some of them had fur on them! Okay so first off- this is not my plate.....a colleague raves about this place having delicious food. So myself and two other colleagues placed an Uber eats order. I ordered a General Tso chicken- which was plentiful but not appetizing (to me) but I did give it to someone who enjoyed it and said it was delicious (I didn't get a chance to take a pic of it). The pieces of chicken were gmo huge. The spicy was too sweet for my liking. My colleague ordered a two-meat entree (I think that is what it is called) her order consists of Hog Maws (did I spell/say it right?) and pig feet... I'm not sure which is which in the photo but when I tell you she left nothing but BONEZ (not bones) that was all that was left along with the rice... apparently, they did not give her "rice & gravy" as she requested. So glad we came here for a family gathering. Most places have staffing issues and cannot handle large parties but this place was easily able to handle a party of 16. I could only give it three starts because there is not a lot of variety in the food. The service was great very accommodating. However the food average nothing out of the ordinary, it's pretty much a combination between some Panda Express and some Cracker Barrel. If you go on a Sunday be prepared to make food lines that can take up to 15 to 20 minutes to get through. Ambiance was ok, we were seated next to an dry aquarium which wasn't kept up and looked a little gross other than that the very else was well cleaned. I think it's weird to have Asian cuisine and Soul Food in the same establishment but new city, new experience. The soul food was GOOD. This restaurant was a welcomed surprise: Chinese and Soulfood in two different buffet lines, but in the same restaurant. Loved the different menu choices and the food that I tried was very good & well seasoned. The wait staff in bringing your drinks and picking up your plates were punctual and kind. My husband had eaten at this place about five years ago and we went back because he wanted pig feet. Lol according to him and his sister they were absolutely delicious. I tried eggrolls, noodles, shrimp, fish (I believe it was cod), cabbage and lima beans. All were very good. I did not see a black cook so I was surprised to see Asian's cooking soul food. The only thing I didn't like was that kids were allowed to go up and fix their own plates and there were a lot of kids allowed to run around, I don't like kids playing over my food... so I question the cleanliness of serving areas. read more

I LOVE this restaurant. The food is one of the best in the city and I go there anytime I am starving and want to fill up my belly with as much food as possible. Personally, my favorite is eating pig feet with white rice. I get it everytime I am there. I believe this is the only restaurant in Memphis which serves hot and delicious pig feet. I am more so vegeterian now so I now eat the potatoes and veges. This restaurant is the perfect combination of southern food and chinese mixed. Buffet price is also reasonable. Try it out. So even for a Chinese soul food buffet, Chow Time leaves a lot to be desired. My family likes this place so I was obliged to tag along. The restaurant is not well lit and felt a bit dirty from the moment I set foot in the door. I'm always challenged by restaurants that have poor lighting because it makes me think they are hiding something. The staff was nice enough (for a self-serve buffet). If you are in a party of 5 or more, you're automatically seated in a large dining room in the back of the restaurant with large 10 person tables. It makes it difficult to socialize with a small party, but that's how they do it at Chow Time. Well the buffet itself left a lot to be desired. It's basically set up in 4 parts. Chines food, Fried food, sides and desserts/salads. And yes, the desserts and salads are all in one bar together. After my first choice restaurant (Maharaja) was closed due to "electrical issues" (at least, that's what the sign on the door said), and my second choice restaurant was seemingly nonexistent (Woodlands), I found myself driving aimlessly up and down Hacks Cross in the rain, confused and hungry. I was with a friend, and we were both nearing the point where we were about to give up and give in to the Steak Escape drive through when he saw something promising: Chow Time, a Chinese and soul food buffet with a sign ringed in brilliant white light blubs like a theatre marquee. It seemed like a good idea. And was it ever. First of all, while most restaurants have the basic "No shoes, no shirt, no service" rules, Chow Time is the first place I've ever been that has an entire wall devoted to rules and regulations. No sitting for more than two hours. No miniskirts. And everyone must be wearing a shirt at all times. There were so many of them (and they were so specific) that I have to wonder how many of them were written to address a real-life problem. We were seated immediately by the security guard, and a friendly waitress brought us drinks. Families were eating from plates piled high with food, single men were watching football and we were standing there wide-eyed, staring at the buffet's sections - "China Inn", "Southern Home Cookin'", "Grill USA" and "Salad Bar". I started on the soul food side of the buffet. It was sprawling and complete with its offerings of Southern staples (think mac'n'cheese, greens, mashed potatoes, cornbread) and delicacies (like pig's feet and chitterlings). And then, just because I could, I plopped two egg rolls from the Chinese Buffet on my plate, setting them atop my fried catfish to keep them from being soaked by the juice from my greens. The soul food was all pretty tasty, but I have to give high marks to the greens, which (with the addition of a little vinegar) were close to perfection. As I ate from that first plate, I came to two important realizations about Chow Time: 1. Chow Time is kind of brilliant in its ability to please just about everyone (except, sadly, vegetarians); and 2. Chow Time would be amazing if you were drunk. On my second trip to the buffet, I went for the Chinese section. I loaded up my plate with Chinese vegetables (water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, celery and baby corn), pepper steak, zucchini in some kind of clear sauce and some rather delicious fried potato wedges. While most of the food was decent, you don't have to worry about legions of pretentious foodies flocking to Chow Time. The food is good (and some of it, like the greens, is really good) but it's designed for maximum efficiency. But the quality of the food doesn't really seem to be the point at Chow Time, and that's more than alright. The point is that it's a place that just about everyone can agree on. It's inexpensive (dinner for one with a drink is about $12). It's an excellent people watching opportunity. It's got the kind of concept that seems like it would only work in Memphis. read more

The buffet was actually pretty expansive and had a very good variety of Chinese food, Southern food and even had nachos with taco meat (which was very good by the way). I really liked the variety and the food was stocked (even with the large number of people there). I did not see anything that was dried out or empty. The dessert selection was ok...the peach cobbler was good but the cake was quite dry. A good deal...the lunch was less than $10 per person. I would go back if I am in the area. read more
