After a long trip from California and one night in Bend, we headed to Chow before we drove home to Portland. I'm so glad we stopped! We shared the smoked salmon hash and the huevos rancheros. AWESOME! Everything tasted fresh and unique. The portions were just right. We also shared a Bloody Mary. Best Bloody Mary we've ever had. No joke. Fantastic breakfast riddled with gluten free and vegan menu options. If you're going for something a little more gourmet, you have found your new home. However, you are going to spend a months income on this meal. But good food comes with a cost and I will gladly fork it over time and time again. In regards to the wait times, McKay's Cottage and Victorian Cafe will be the same situation. My French toast with bananas and pecans drizzled in caramel was definitely worth the wait. If I could give Chow ten stars I would. I visited this funky little enclave of awesomeness a couple of weeks ago when I was in Bend and I have been craving it ever since. I am a vegetarian and I had the Multi Grain Salad. The salad was warm, which I didn't expect, but it was off the charts. I also had the special chai, with hazelnut infused vodka, I wanted 10, fortunately for my boyfriend I abstained. My boyfriend had the burrito, which was HUGE and he absolutely loved it. Others in our party had the pancakes, which were amazing with fresh blueberries and the smoked salmon hash, which they devoured. This place came highly recommended for breakfast and by the size of the wait I was looking forward to it. I checked out the menu and there were amazing dishes and I thought I was in for a great breakfast. I will wait a long time for great food, maybe a little longer for great breakfast food. We waited an hour and 45 minutes for this place. I ordered the smoked salmon hash and multigrain pancakes. My wife had the poached egg with a polenta cake. By the time the food got to us we had been waiting over 2 and half hours. The coffee was terrible. The drip was bitter even when it was fresh. My dish was rather bland. The smoke salmon flavor was pretty weak. The pancakes were cold and hard when they got to us. They probably could have been good if they were hot. I would have sent them back, but based on the slow lackadaisical service, I would never have eaten. My wife's dish was good too. The polenta cake was crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle. Health and nutrition conscious menu, with a great willingness to make thigs vegan. The tofu scramble is fantastic. Occasionally I've ordered a vegan locavore (scramble with in-season items) that's shown up with eggs instead of tofu, so there may be a few servers who don't understand the distinction. Fantastic fresh made hot sauces! On the weekends, unless you arrive near opening time, anticipate a long wait. It's worth it, tho! How do I love Yelp?... Were heading home from Sunriver and didn't want to pay the super-high prices at the resort for breakfast, so off to Yelp I went. Chow was number one on the list for breakfast and...damn...it doesn't get much better than this for breakfast. House bread was a fresh pumpkin bread...I had the Eggs a la Vinny - eggs benedict with FARM FRESH EGGS, beautiful orange yolks, house smoked ham and...wait for it...REAL HOLLANDAISE - yep, the stuff made with egg yolks!!! Their house potatoes are to die for...not sure what they are cooked in, but no additions necessary. Hubby had the French Toast with Bananas - yeah...the bread could have been soaked longer, but since it was about 1 1/2 thick, I can cut them a little slack. Coffee was strong and fresh...necessary. They had a lot of fresh mushrooms to add to stuff, they smoke their own, fresh salmon that you can add to anything. Will definitely go there again - would like to try their lunch! read more

We've come back several times this summer. The food continues to be spectacular (and reasonably priced for the quality!) and they finally got good coffee. However, I had to subtract a star since service has been going downhill. One time, we had a blond server with a terrible attitude. My coffee didn't come and we had to go inside to get it. When the order came, it was all wrong and she seemed annoyed when we told her about it. When the right food finally came, the rest of my party was already done. The bill was out all wrong. We noticed it after paying and told her. She went back inside and changed it to MORE. (how that's possible without the card?) When we asked her about it, she said that the prices on the menu were wrong and that management had taken away her 'voiding' privileges, so she couldn't adjust our bill. By this point she was very snippy and obviously wanted us to just go away. We did complain to the manager but she's still there. Last time, the servers were just chatting for 10 minutes while everyone in the restaurant was waiting. That was a bit strange. Honestly, 4.5 stars if I could. Food 5 presentation, portion size, and taste. Service was quick although they missed my chai tea order and I had to ask for refills once on my coffee. Love that we got 2 free coffees with check in via yelp - easy! Prices are reasonable for the quality. Pleasant and cozy with warm natural lighting. They have cute outdoor seating patio style and their own garden out back. They also let us split the check in various amounts without fuss~. Very very good breakfast. Menu was simple and easy to understand, lots of options, and more then just "stacks and eggs"- they really put thought into their combinations. I had a special- eggs, spinach, brie, apples, apple sausage (yum)- loved it. My friends both had the crab cake hollandsaise thing- they both loved it. For the sides there is a lot more then just hash browns, I had the corn crusted tomatoes- they were roasted tomatoes with crust - they were light and good. Another friend had the polenta side and loved it and my other had their roasted potatoes- all looked good and were of good portion (although not too big). We all opted for the free range eggs (they are better for us). Service was GREAT- hands down- awesome. My only minor complaint is that our table- while quiet for most of the meal was nearly instantly surrounded by people- of close proximity. What can I say, by far my favorite breakfast in Bend! We went there a couple days ago (my first time) and everything was spectacular! Hostess was very friendly, got seated very quickly. Staff was on top of it all through out our time there (refilling waters and coffee quickly, clearing plates etc). Our food was fantastic! Came here for brunch last Sunday. I was slightly disappointed with what we got. All those hyped up Yelp reviews set me up for disappointment. Also, the menu had crab cakes or something, but they didn't have it on the menu when I went in, which was a bit of a let-down. Chow is one my go-to places for breakfast in Bend. If the wait is long, which it is generally between 1hr-1.5hr wait on a weekend, I'll go over to Backporch, grab an americano to go, then go enjoy the live music and firepit outside at Chow. Most of the time, Chow turns into an all morning affair- but with the fun, relaxed, and welcoming atmosphere, I'm okay with that. For the food, I switch between the Eggs Ala Vinny or one of their weekly specials where I always add some spice with their homemade sauces. Wow...spent the weekend camping/drinking beer in Bend and decided to have a nice breakfast before hitting the road to head back down to CA. By quickly skimming yelp, I found Chow and decided to give it a go. Chow is a cute house-like structure with a beautiful garden surrounding it. Even though it was slightly raining and cold people were huddled outside waiting their turn for a table inside. We waited about 15 minutes for a table for two and were able to have nice hot coffee during the wait. The inside is decorated with local artists' creations, warm colors, comfortable chairs and lots of plants...and the FOOD...the food was absolutely wonderful. I had the Caesar, poached eggs on top of corn cakes with quesco fresco and delicious homemade roja and verde sauces. Absolutely delicious. The entire experience was fantastic and I left happy as a clam. Definitely worth the wait...Wish they had one of these in every city! read more

I have high expectations for brunch -and Chow is where it's at. I've been here 6-8 times in the last 4 weeks because it's just SO darn yummy! The shortest wait I ever experienced was 45 mins, with 1 hr being the norm, but don't worry! They have an amazing outdoor area to enjoy coffee (it's set out so you can pour it yourself) and the bar is available for a breakfast cocktail. The bartender, Sean, is extremely friendly and somehow always has a smile on his face dispite the fact that he's serving up drinks for the entire restaurant alone. I highly recommend a spicy Bloody Mary or a mimosa with guava (they're NOT stingy on the champagne). On the weekends they have live music. I like to sit on the lawn by the garden and sip my drink while I wait. The food is fresh tasting and the eggs are always poached perfectly. The menu changes daily based on what fresh ingredients the chef gets in. Overall, love this place! read more

Went back to Chow! Sparrow bakery is closed on Mondays. and one of my friends wouldn't go to Corey's. And we decided the Victorian is too expensive and not that good anymore. We took our chances with Chow...again...as I always do. Whew! The service was good. First time ever, maybe second. Food was pretty good too. Everything was good but maybe just a little bland for what it could have been. Eggs ala Med-poached eggs on crispy polenta topped with spinach and roasted pepper hollandaise. and a side of vegan gravy to dip my potatoes in. The hollandaise didn't taste like much...until I doused some Cholula on it. The vegan gravy was swimming with onions. It wasn't very good. I got a blast of salt when I ate the spinach-ahh! Whatever. This used to be my go to for summer breakfast. This morning's "chow" was way below par. The special omelette with fresh mozzarella, lemon, arugula and shaved Parmesan was dry, no mozzarella detectable, no lemon and maybe a hint of parm, maybe.... My wife's 2 eggs over were way over, potatoes were greasy as was the ham. We left 80% of the chow on the plate and the server never asked if everything was ok. I was so excited to try this place only to be let down by the bland though attractive food and cocktails. The place is in a good location and very cute. One big suggestion.... Assign the waitresses tables!! It was nothing but constant confusion from the moment we walked in. We had at least three different waitresses coming to our table intermittently to take our drink and food orders. On top of that the waitress that appeared to be our "main" gal - though very perky and 'nice' - barely listened to a word we said even when she was the one asking the questions! Went in a few months ago because of someone we knew who worked there..note to management it is a small place and when you admonish staff in front of patrons that is a turnoff. We have heard several people mention that. I am absolutely in love with Chow. Shhh, don't tell my husband--he may get jealous! ;) I have not had a single meal here that has not been the epitome of delicious. Thai chicken salad--unique, flavorful and delectable. Veggie spring rolls w/peanut sauce--amazing blend of spicy, crunchy and fabulous. The locavore omelette--loaded with fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection. There really isn't anything that I've tried here that didn't make little happy sounds escape my lips with each bite. The service at Chow is attentive and friendly, and their patio seating is the perfect place to dine on a warm Bend day. I love the fact that they use local ingredients and vendors, and even grow a lot of their own herbs and produce in their on-site garden. After reading so many great reviews of Chow, my wife and I were looking forward to a late breakfast this past Sunday. We arrived at 2PM and had a short 10-minute wait out front, enjoying the girls on the sidewalk in front of Newport Market dressed in tutus hawking a school or club car wash. Our food took about 35 minutes to arrive as the kitchen apparently ran out of eggs and chef had to run across to Newport Market. Our server Kelly apologized by offering a $10 gift card for a future visit. My House Hash with Smoked Salmon & Bacon was tasty but too salty. The focus of the dish was total heaviness with a large pile of carbs and two small eggs on top. Both eggs were totally overcooked and actually one was dead. My wife went with the Sampson (Poached eggs, crab cakes and sauce Choron) on the recommendation of Kelly who was very personable. While my wife liked the dish, the eggs again were dry and hard inside. I'm a lover of carbs but every dish I saw come out of the kitchen looked delish but oh sooo heavy. Based on how busy Chow was I guess people want heavy food in huge quantities. We'll pass. read more

They had sent much of the staff home in preparation for rain that never came, so it took much longer to get seated than we expected for a late morning Monday-half of the seats were empty. Frustrating, but that's a tough judgment call on the manager's part. When we were finally seated, our waiter was hungover, did not tell us about the daily specials (we heard about them after we ordered as a different server told those sitting at the next table). Two things you need to know: There is a long wait on the weekends, be prepared. And it's a little pricey, but it's Bend. When you are seated, you're greeted with amazing customer service. They make sure your needs are met and they don't bug you. The food was so damn good! I shared a plate with a friend and was so incredibly satisfied. Umm....yeah. This place gets a hell yes please. Came here twice already. Sat outside the first time and inside the next. Bloody Mary's are awesome and several different choices. A pile of house made pickles comes on top. The wife got a kombucha Cooler with muddled mint and blueberry, ohh and vodka. Both breakfasts have been supper yummy and different. I got the Mediterranean style breakfast with St. Andre Crispy Polenta and poached eggs then the next day got the Beer-braised corned beef hash. While visiting Bend over memorial weekend my boyfriend and I went to Chow as our last stop before heading home. I was very excited because of the option that they offered a gluten-free vegan menu (vey hard to find anything like that). While walking in we noticed it was pretty busy and went to put in our name to the tall brunette hostess that instantly seemed annoyed with us being there. She never smiled or even gave us a friendly greeting. There was about a thirty minute wait so we waited outside in the garden area because there was nowhere else to wait with it being busy. About 20 minutes went by and I went to check where we were at on the list and then the hostess (while using a rude tone) informed me that she called out our name and now we would have to wait again! So we waited another 15 minutes and made sure to be right by the door. Was very irritated at this point but we finally got seated and then things turned around. Our waitress was a very sweet blonde lady and she was awesome! Even though it was busy she was very kind and our food was amazing! We loved everything about it other than the horrible first impression. It's unfortunate that you're made to feel bad about coming to a business. Food is amazing!! Waitress rocked!! I really wanted to like this place since it's always insanely busy, especially on the weekends. I've heard great things about it from friends and family and decided to try it on a weekday morning. It has a very funky eclectic vibe on the outside which looked promising, but didn't really continue inside. Yes some weird art but the more you look it's kind of run down and tired looking. I swatted at a fly on the bench cushion and raised a small dust storm. Then there was the food. Where is the flavor? From our iced tea to our entrees, very bland. Also order was wrong and had to be re-made. Service was a little hit and miss, would hate to see it on a busy day. Server was friendly but not around much, at one point took our glasses to refill our beverages and took quite some time to return. Price wise maybe a little higher than average for Bend. It's probably obvious I wasn't a fan and I'm sad about that. We like to support our local folks but can't get behind this one. read more

Once seated, we waited....and waited... When the server assisted us, he informed us the better chef was not on duty and they could not cook gluten free. Even though the wait was "15 minutes" (more like 30plus) we were given free coffee and were able to wait on the grass where they have picnic tables and chairs to pass the time. Once the show began, I went with the "Local" breakfast which is the basic eggs, sausage, toast and breakfast potatoes. The classic order was delicious. Eggs fresh, sausage delicious, and out of this world breakfast potatoes. They also have incredible jam for the bread.
