Chopt is a salad assembly line made with generally subpar ingredients. There is always a line out the door, but it moves quickly. This lunch spot requires little to no human interaction or order. It's perfectly designed to get you in and out the door and back to your desk. The chicken is very very bad. It doesn't even taste like chicken. Overall the salad is edible and will keep you full when you're in a pinch for lunch. But I would not recommend stopping by just to check it out. read more

After a mediocre experience at the other Chopt near me, I came here to try a different meal and gauge how different this one is. I ordered the Mexican Caesar salad. It was really well chopped, mixed, and distributed well in the bowl so each bite was full of flavor and textures. I also ordered the hibiscus beverage. It was not sweet at all but was flavorful nonetheless. I enjoyed it but note that the other two fresh beverages are not sweet either. The ordering process is what knocked one star off. By the time you reach the counter you have to know your order. The counter is also where all of the options are so you have no time to pick and are rushed to choose. Most people ahead of me seemed to know exactly their order and customization so they are likely repeat customers. The cashier was nice. There were plenty of two-person booths. Limited seating but most were empty because most people seem to take their food to go. If going with a big group to dine in, opt for the Pennsylvania Avenue one instead of this one--far more seats! read more

Meh. I could have gone to Chiptole. Chopt follows the Built a Bear concept so familiar in the casual restaurant dining scene. Much like Subway, Chipotle and these pizza joints that allow you to build your on pie, Chopt follows the assembly line model with, apparently, great fanfare. The bowl sizes are massive. There's easily two servings in there. You can go with a standardized option, like the cobb or Santa Fe, or build your own. Base choices include kale, romaine, spinach and arugula (a personal favorite of mine). People, and I cannot stress this enough, make sure you are loading your salad with options. I made the mistake of going skimpy, not realizing the total amount of lettuce being offered. It's deceiving, like pasta and rice. Am I adding too much to the boiling water? Too little? Trust me, you will likely add too little of this is your first time. Options include egg, tomatoes, cucumbers, grilled onions, jalapenos, grapes, olives, scallions, goat cheese, cheddar, chickpeas, Parmesan and olive oil. I added about half of these and I felt like I was eating a lightly seasoned head of lettuce. Other add-on options include broccoli, carrots, edamame, beets, roasted squash, feta, Soba noodles (Eh? Really?!), qunoa, walnuts, smoked bacon, cranberries, tortilla chips, avocado, tofu, grilled chicken, steak, shrimp, falafel and so very much more. Being a salad lover, I like the concept. Ordered delivery from this location two days in a row. Both days something in our order was wrong from the actually Chopt location (vs the delivery human missing something). So that was slightly disappointing. The first day the employee forgot to give the delivery human one of our salads. When he went back to get the missing one, she gave him the wrong one. Unacceptable. I've always loved Chop't but for deliveries, disappointing. Not sure why because it's just a matter of just reading the order list they get.... Ordered this for lunch on ritual. All of the pickup orders were ready when I got there and the bowl was still warm - super efficient! Bowl was okay. I expected more grains than just brown rice. But the grains and the kale made it super filling. Overall the flavor was good but not great. Dressing is a little on the sour side so I am glad I got it on the side. I'm one of the biggest salad snobs out there so I'm very particular on where and who makes me a salad. I tried Chopt after a meeting and was immediately impressed by the atmosphere. The manager was super pleasant and the staff behind the counter making the salads were very helpful. They really live up to the name because they were chopping that salad like nobody's business. I made my own salad and ordered a Kale/Spanish salad with apples, cage free eggs, dried cranberries, cheese, pepper and topped it off with balsamic dressing. I love Chopt and this has been one of my most memorable experience eating at this location. The service was A+. I took my mom there for a quick lunch and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They were able to help her pick out the perfect salad... she loved it. While preparing our food we laughed with the workers and I commented "you must love your job". Without hesitation everyone belted out a "YES!!!" It was refreshing to see and I loved that they put a smile on my moms face after dealing with DC traffic :-/ I'm telling my coworkers and friends to visit this specific location; every ingredient in The salads were fresh, the staff is pleasant and hey, why not get a good laugh in while on a lunch break with your mom. This is definitely not as good as the NYC brethren. I've been spending a lot of time here this summer and was so excited to find my favorite salad place had a sister outlet in DC. Boy have I have disappointed. I consider myself a "chop't aficionado" and the Chop't in DC is simply not as good. 1) Queueing at this location is nightmare. Line is out the door at all times. I am used to long lines at Chop't but I simply believe this place is way less efficient. many of the chopt's in NYC snake the line, which is important when it gets cold outside so you aren't standing and braving the elements to get your salad. 2) ingredients simply not as fresh. This should really be my #1 gripe. I'm not sure if they are sourcing from an inferior vendor, but the quality is much better in NYC. In particular I noticed it with the beets which looked mushy from a can and the avocado which was all browned over. 3) staff not as efficient or as good at chopping. They seem to use a single chopper blade here in DC. I think the double blade does a much finer chop and on top of it, the staff doesn't seem as quick. Lastly two days in a row, they ran out of knives and I seemed to have to wait forever for someone to find one in the back. While Its OK for me to go here and Chopt does seem like the only game in town for chopt salad in DC, it pales in comparison to the originals in NYC. read more

Interesting take on salads. A little overpriced for lettuce? Yeah, I guess so. But delcious? Yep. Oh, the dilemmas! So what makes Chop't different from getting your average fast food joint or restaurant? Let's just say they specialize on salads and take it in a new perspective on how it can become a meal. (Because to me, salad just doesn't cut it for me) But this was a new experience as I thought a salad is just a salad and nothing could change. Boy, was I surprised. Now, when you go in here they'll ask you exactly what you want to eat. And if you're a salad expert, customize it as much as you want and they'll serve it! Of course, I wasn't a salad expert so I just went with whatever they gave me. I ordered the Cop't Po'Boy with the recommended Tex-Mex ranch. It came with romaine lettuce, but I believe that's definitely changeable. The first person puts in the lettuce, the second chops up the lettuce and finishes with what you want, salad dressing and so on. One thing to note is to follow your salad! There's going to be usually a long line of employees trying to make your perfect salad, but it's going to be tossed around to different people so I would highly suggest not to worry about skipping someone in the line if you see your salad disappearing down further in the line. Anyways, if I'm ever back in town...I will definitely come here if I am craving for a salad. (Because I just can't stop thinking the way they chop it is so interesting!) read more

I went to this location, further from my office than the K street location because I wanted to get some steps in. I shouldn't have. FYI I ordered ahead on their website. I asked for sweet potatoes (they had this as an option, and I payed for it!!) and they were NOT in my salad when I opened the package back at my office. My salad is also spicy-- and I wasn't sure why since I didn't add any spicy ingredients since I'm pretty sensitive to that type of food. Then I noticed that there were pickled jalapeños sprinkled throughout. how are sweet potatoes and jalapeños even close to similar? How do you make this mistake? Tried Chop't after a recommendation from a friend. The long lines at sweetgreen always made me very weary of going in. I thankfully chose the right time during lunch (1:30 pm) and found myself in line behind only 3 people. Initially, there was nowhere to sit but I was able to find a table. I honestly stood looking at the menu for about 2 minutes and was a little clueless about the ordering process. It didn't help that the employee behind the food wasn't talking loudly so I had a hard time figuring out what he was asking. Once I acclimated, I ordered a salad that was ah-mazing! I tried the mavericks salad with chicken tinga. It was filling because of the double protein from the chicken and quinoa, and also very tasty. I was warned that the sweet and smoky chipotle dressing was spicy, but I didn't find it to be. It had a little kick, but not too much and my palette is sensitive. Ultimately, I did feel like $11 (price with tax) was a lot for a lunch salad. But I left my bowl empty and my belly was full. I'll definitely be back to try what else they have. This is the first Chop't I've ever visited and I had a great experience! I went around 6PM for dinner and we were basically the only ones there. I did a custom salad, and yes it was a little overpriced, especially for a salad, but that wasn't unpredictable in DC. The salad was HUGE so it was well worth the price and actually kept me full! The person who served me and chopped my salad was very nice - let me know when certain toppings were extra, asked if my salad was chopped enough, and made sure I got the right amount of dressing. For the salad itself, there was nothing particularly stand out, which is why I give Chop't a 4. It's a great place and does great work, but to me it's nothing spectacular. Yes the salads are good, but why does it have to be so expensive? More than $10 for a salad without any special ingredients. I personally think the process can be streamlined with just one person making your salad instead of having multiple people crafting your meal. I'm not really sure where the other people who reviewed this Chop't went ... but clearly not to the Chop't that I know and love. I started frequenting the Chop't in Dupont over the summer and have been to their NY locations while traveling, but this new location is closer to my office so its a new favorite. I'll put it out on the table - the salad is more expensive than what you'd pay at any run of the mill place where you are just picking up a salad. But honestly, you are getting much more than just some random run of the mill salad. The pre-created salads on the menu wall are all amazing, but if none of them seem good to you - make your own. Their ingredients are fresh and delicious, and offer so many options. But honestly, the creativity of some of the menu options will really send your taste buds wild - in a way you never thought possible for a salad. The service can be confusing - especially at peak times, because it gets really crowded - but just sort of go with the flow and you will figure it out. Each location organizes their lines a little bit different, but just order your salad and watch it and you should be fine. Honestly give it a try - if it isn't one of the best to-go salads you have had, let me know. read more

So recently started working near this location and I'd never been to Chopt before. I was feeling particularly piggish after consuming red meat for 2 days in a row and so I opted for a salad. Took a stroll down here and realized I should have come here more often. You know who likes salads? Girls like salads. And there were tons of pretty ladies. So that was good. Of course what did I get? The Monterey, which comes with grilled chicken and pepperjack cheese, so not totally healthy. I also received the most anemic portion of pita bread, what's up with that? Okay, here is the deal. The salad was pretty good although it cost $10 and the staff were really friendly. Why only one star, you ask? Well, mostly because of the enormous amount of waste generated by this chain. Call me crazy, but it seems like a fancy new salad chain should pay some regard to the growing environmental issue. It seems as if Chop't actually tries to make extra wasteful plastic containers and extra large plastic forks and spoons. I can't stomach a salad that does so much harm. It was so crowded in there it made me sick to imagine the amount of plastic waste generated in only one hour of lunch at Chop't. There is also no mention of local produce or sustainable practices on their giant wall of "Infrequently asked questions." Also, these two ladies next to me kept talking about their au pairs. I thought this place would be pretty good, but it was meh! I guess I'm not a salad person I guess. I ordered the Santa Fe Salad, which comes with corn, avocado, fried onions, tomato and the chipotle dressing. I didn't like the fact that they pretty much smashed the avocado into my salad, that made it pretty nasty. I couldn't really stomach it after that. I thought they would have just cubed the avocado, but when they chop all the ingredients together that's when they smashed it. Otherwise the salad would've been better. The service is pretty fast but can be confusing because you don't know who's actually waiting on you. Prices are pretty average for DC when compared to Cosi and others. At least at Cosi I get a piece of bread. Here you get a slice of whole wheat tortilla, which is soggy because they put it on top of the salad. Needless to say, I probably won't be back. read more

Great idea, but only so-so in practice. There are so many options to choose from that I felt overwhelmed when I got through the line to order and just threw out the first things that came to mind. I ended up with a spinach salad with chicken, broccoli, green apple, beets, and carrots. The four fruits/veggies were included in the base price, but the chicken was an extra $2.29. I asked for the reduced fat balsamic vinaigrette, which turned out to be VERY vinegary- too strong for my taste. The whole salad ran me just under $10, which seemed really steep for what it was (mostly vegetables with a few chunks of chicken) - however, it was a pretty generous helping, and I couldn't even finish it all. Don't think I'll be rushing back here, but if I were craving a salad, it might be worth a second try. I would try a different dressing next time and be prepared for upcharges on some of the toppings I really wanted (e.g. feta cheese, walnuts, avocado). I discovered that Pret A Manger on 18th & I offers a delicious chicken and avocado salad for a dollar or so less than what I paid for a basic chicken salad at Chop't, so unless you really want the flexibility to design your own salad down to the last ingredient, I think there are more affordable places to go. read more

This review is for Chop't as a whole - I'm too lazy to review each individual Chop't. I've been to the one here, Dupont, and in Arlington and on the whole, I love the concept and their salads in general. Although if they're going to give out bread, you might as well take a page out of Cosi's book and offer real bread rather than two pieces of pita. Absolutely favorite is the Cobb salad, although it does come in at a whopping 1,100 calories, which kind of defeats the purpose of eating a salad. But, it's that good that I'll let it slide. The only complaint I have, and this is only for this location, is that the avocado I have gotten have pretty much been in whole form, while everything else is finely chopped. But maybe that will change one day and until then, I will go sans-avocado on my Cobb salad. Also, bonus points for free delivery to office (and home I guess) locations within a 4 block radius. read more

I've been to many Chop't locations, but this one happens to be closest to where I work and I go there for lunch every few weeks or so. Anyway, let's start with the salads. Yes, they are expensive, but you get a ton of food so I think it's worth it - for the most part. One irritating thing is that the same salad will cost me two dollars less at the Chop't in Chinatown, but as I said, I work near this one, so I'm stuck paying more if the craving hits. I like the choices, I think the ingredients are fresh, and most of the time the service is decent. I agree with whoever said there's one angry chopper woman that never wants to chop up my salads. She runs that guillotine blade over it maybe twice and then gives you a look that says, "I dare you to ask me to keep going." Why only three stars? I hate their music. Not only is it loud, but it's the same cheesy reggae played over and over and over. I won't sit there and eat because of it, so if there isn't a table outside available or the weather sucks, I am left having to bring it back to my office. My vote for loudest, lamest reggae played at a Chop't goes to the one inside Union Station. Wow. When I worked at the Senate and went to that Chop't for lunch, I'd actually sit down in the fried tourist swamp food court rather than eat in there. Let's face facts - sometimes you just don't want to listen to blaring reggae on your lunch hour. Other than that, it's okay. read more

My normal Chop't is the one in Metro Center, but I found myself around this one and craving it the other day, so went here instead! I love love LOVE chop't! Salad isn't usually something that excites me but I think their Palm Beach Shrimp salad is AMAZING. I love that the ingredients are chopped up so finely that every time you plunge your fork in their you aren't sure what you are going to get. In fact, because of Chop't, I've grown to hate it when I order a salad somewhere and the ingredients aren't mixed at all and just separated into piles. Who would want that!? This is even more crowded than my Metro Center's, with line waay out the door before 12, and I think the layout in this one is not as good - the paying line and the line waiting to get the salads chopped up kind of mush into each other and it is confusing. I've never had anything here but the Palm Beach Shrimp.. if you like shrimp and avocado, GET that, you won't be disappointed. Yes, it is expensive, but at least for me, the salad is so big that I can have a satisfying lunch and then have plenty leftover for a nice afternoon snack or take it home as part of dinner. This is rating their catering, which is solely related to customer service. O-M-G. I mean, I could literally say it over...and over...and over. I mean, I don't even know what else could have gone wrong. 1. they forgot half our order; 2. the delivery man dropped our dessert tray and still wanted to serve it to us without bringing back a replacement; 3. we asked for a "few" veggie sandwich options, which Chop't took as "let's serve a party of 25 people ALL veggie sandwiches." UM what? Yeah, not a single protein in any of the sandwiches we received. Then, to get our order fixed, we had to wait almost another hour to receive the remaining part of our order--awesome. It seems that for the past 8 months I have been ordering salads from Chop for lunch and they have never let me down (well except once). Their salads are filling, the service is great and they arrive when they say their coming. Most importantly... whenever they screw up the always "come correct". I have complained online and a representative calls me back (did I say, call) to see what the problem was and how could they make it better. Even calling the manager today (they forget my drink, napkins and a fork) was a great experience. They sent someone back and they gave me all my money back. I will continue to eat there. read more

But this place came through on a super rainy night delivering two very tasty salads to our hotel in a very timely manner. I had the Santa Fe while my wife customized.
