I had a make your own salad with beets and artichoke hearts, among my favorite salad ingredients. My boyfriend got the ham and turkey sandwich, which was delightful as well. The only negative aspect of this restaurant was we showed up during the lunch rush- which is nothing you can control. The workers were on top of the busy environment and serviced us quickly despite the long line of people. They had a huge variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and bakery items. I work right across the street from this place so it's super convenient to grab lunch there. Beware it is crazy busy during lunch but the line moves fairly quickly. The prosciutto sandwich is delicious! It has fig jam, arugula, and manchego cheese - all of which I love and tastes delicious together! My go-to sandwich here. I also got the butternut squash soup which was also super tasty! Came here once and didnt have the best experience. I pre-ordered through an app. Once I got there it wasnt ready. No one asked or told me anything. Again this is my first time here so im not sure what to do. The cashier didnt help I just stood at the place where pre-ordered were suppose to be picked up. After 6-7 mins the cook finally gave me eye contact and asked what I had order. They made it which took another 5min. The sandwich was big but as you can see very plain. I haven't been here in a long time, but it was a pretty day so my colleagues and I decided to walk a few blocks to get here. We got there just before the lunch rush surge, which got pretty hectic, but the folks behind the counter were absolute champs, slathering condiments, tossing salads, and wrapping sandwiches post haste. I went for a simple option: I saw a premade sandwich behind the glass that looked great, pointed to it, and after it was wrapped in paper, quickly paid for it at the register. My two colleagues took more time building a salad and sandwich from scratch. For salads, you start by grabbing the base (spinach, mixed greens, etc.) already prepped in a plastic shell from a baker's rack, and take it to the counter for the rest. read more

This is my go-to soup spot during business hours! I'm not even into soups but this place is worth it when I'm in that occasional soup mood. They offer many options for soups and will even let you sample it before ordering. I've had their sandwiches and salads and I love the option to build your own, but I've found the sandwhiches to be a bit overpriced. I'm very partial to Sweet Leaf Cafe in Virginia where they make exquisite toasted sandwiches fresh to order, so I had to adjust my expectations when it came to Devon and Blakely. Even after my sandwich was toasted it didn't taste fully melted and warm, yet the filling was delicious enough that I forgive them their pre-made status. Yelpers have noted the wan bread here. I was about to make a dig about the thin-ish bread, yet I was actually happy not having to navigate past a whopping serving of carbs at lunch. So although I love a crusty baguette like the rest of you, I'm okay with the thin bread here. Their selection of sandwiches is opulent and the fixings are decadent. You won't find your thin, two-bite, English cucumber sandwich here. Think more Carolina barbequed, pulled chicken sandwich stuffed with cole-slaw until it falls out of the whole construction. Swell, delectable choices. If you're vegetarian, they are solicitous: humus and avocado sandwich will do you right. Lentil soup hits the right notes. Salads are on point, with fresh ingredients. Their space is quite cosy, booth seating feels comfortable, and I love the battalion of good-natured (and good-looking) chef assistants behind the glass counter ready to warm up your choice of sandwich or fix up your salad. This place feels like a throwback, old-fashioned lunch shop where office goers are offered quality sandwiches prepared with a great flourish. Thankfully different from the "Cosi"-style, corporate-chain sterility and insufferably blase counter service. For this, I give Devon and Blakely top billing. I would give this a 3.75 rounded up to a 4. Now why did I knock them a star and a quarter? Well, the space is slightly confusing in terms of flow. For hot sauce, you can't just pick up a bottle off a shelf, you have to special request it from one of the aforementioned chefs who will prepare you a tub. For a fork, it's not just set out with the napkins, you have to ask at the check-out counter. The sandwich line cuts off half way at the salad line. It's not quite laid out seamlessly. read more

Soup: Seafood Chowder---very creamy with chunks of scallops, fish & crab w/ a few potatoes sprinkled in, it was really tasty & really hit the spot on this cold snowy afternoon. The soup comes in small & large and they also give you a piece a bread with your soup; I got a small which was just enough. Sandwich: Turkey panini---it comes with turkey, mayo, lettuce & tomatoes but I added avocado...this sandwich was so huge that I could only eat half. I had the other half for dinner. Dessert: Carrot Cake---the carrot cake was very moist & yummy! Price point: it's a little on the high side but what isn't in DC & some if it ain't that good but this place hits the spot Seating: not very much seating but the few seats they have are premium for people watching I think I've summed it up but try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed read more

I ordered a sandwich online, and a few minutes later the store calls to let me know they're out of the bread I requested. No problem, of course, they asked me if I wanted something else. After calling to check on the bread, though, I was surprised to get back to my office and find out almost my entire order was wrong. I ordered roast beef and cheddar (this was correct) with horseradish sauce and lettuce. I got honey mustard, some kind of fig spread, lettuce and carrots (probably like a salad mix). I was really disappointed because I loved the one by my old office pre-pandemic. I was excited to see one by my new office as well, but unfortunately that will be the first and last time I go here. read more

I enjoy the massive number of soup choices - as well as the tastiness of the soups. Especially in cold weather. Recently had the Chicken Pot Pie soup (more like a stew) and the Crab and Sweet Corn Chowder. Both were tasty and hit the spot on a cold day in DC. I am most definitely a fan. I have ordered delivery from D&B twice and it has been very good. My first order was a prosciutto and arugla panini. I don't remember what kind of cheese came with it but it was really tasty. I also got a bag of chips and was very full. My second order was the turkey and hummus wrap. It arrive quickly and looked so pretty I took a picture (posted here on Yelp). I got another bag of chips to save for later and also a pickle. The pickle was not as sour as I would have liked, but that happens. Their delivery is super fast (the minimum amount for delivery is $10) and everything arrives really fresh. read more

Definitely a quantity over quality type of joint. The prices and display would make you think this is a gourmet sandwich place, but the sandwiches themselves are often overpriced and underwhelming. Some of what I've tried: Chicken Caesar Wrap, Salad Bar, Blackened Chicken Sandwich. Chicken Caesar Wrap: This just wasn't very good. It was huge and bland. Perhaps is needed more dressing, but the lettuce looked a bit dull and there was way too much wrap, so basically felt like you were eating bread and lettuce with a bit of chicken. Salad Bar: Decent enough, but overpriced. They charge $1.50 for avocado, which is pushing it considering you don't get a full avocado. You can get much tastier salads at Chopt for the same price, and it's like two blocks away. Blackened Chicken Sandwich: Chicken and Creole mayo are great, but it's served on a super thick baguette, making it difficult to eat. Also, the tomatoes are an odd choice to throw in this sandwich, and kind of necessary as they get king of gloppy when heated. All in all, mediocre and overpriced. Devon & Blakely is a great spot to head to when you're "running out for lunch really quick" - emphasis on the "quick" LOL. They are a fast-service restaurant with walk-up counters to order one (or a combination) of soups, salad and sandwiches. They offer hot/cold sandwich options (paninis, gyros, BLTs) and an array of soup options (chili, chowders, bisques) and feature a create-your-own salad station. While there is no clear order upon entering D&B, you'll quickly learn that there is a line for each of the S's. The lines move quickly, so be prepared with your order unless you want to get heavily side-eyed. They do offer samples of the soup though - of which I usually taste-test and end up being "that guy", complete with a burned tongue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. As a soup-all-the-time-even-when-it-is-burning-hot-outside-and-everything-is-melting kind of gal, Devon and Blakely is a dream come true. Docking a star because eating there everyday has bankrupted me. Oh well, we live with our choices. read more

The soups are good, but it's not worth the steep price. Before the pandemic, a cup of the lentil soup was $4.50 - it's not $7.00! I understand needing to increase prices a bit, but an increase of $2.50 for a cup of soup is absolutely ridiculous. On principle alone, I refuse to visit Devon & Blakely. I'd rather spend a couple more dollars to get a more substantial meal at Roti or District Taco down the road. A large variety of pretty food, but you are on your own for service. FOOD ******************* Everything is on display and looks great, which is far above most competition. SELECTION is quite large, but it is missing the basics in many areas. Almost all the many sandwiches are poultry, which I am sensitive to. Almost no beef, no reuben, no cheesesteak. They have what they call a gyro, but it's really just chicken cold cuts in a pita. One guy at the front (who spoke excellent English) said they can make anything you want, but I'm not ready to trust them with that much detail yet, and I saw no sign of pastrami, corned beef or any sort of gyro meat. ATMOSPHERE ************* For a deli, it's lovely, but that's where the ambiance ends. There seems to be a large number of tables and chairs, but they are crammed pretty close together, so you can't help getting cosy with your neighbor. A large salad rack blocks traffic in and out. There is no real theme that I detect -- it's just a place to get lunch. SERVICE **************** NO NAME TAGS or indication of who is in charge. I take that to mean we should not actually "talk" to the staff -- just point and grunt. LANGUAGE BARRIER Every time I ask a question, either they can't understand me, or I can't understand them, or both. I asked if there was any "Irish food". I would get a response like, "Spoon? You want a spoon? Here.". After they passed me around to several staff, I said "No, not spoon, 'food, Irish FOOOD,'" and I would point to all the shamrock decorations, only to get a chuckle and heads nodding. OVERCHARGED I was overcharged in my previous visit when I got a piece of corn bread, and they charged me for a sandwich. Did anyone bother to look at the $2.75 written on the bag in large black marker? OWNERS, please get some real help, or educate your workers. I don't care which. 1.75 stars. If you enjoy stuffing your mouth with inordinate amounts of tasteless bread, you will probably thoroughly enjoy this place. I decided to try this on the recommendation of a Yelper who noted that while it might not be a value proposition, it was at least possible that some of their sandwiches were fine. We have gone to different locations, but the sandwich in question (the crab cake sandwich) was an utter disaster. The crab had taken on almost a minced-like character, was shockingly chewy, and was mostly a thin breaded wafer anyhow. More importantly, what is Devon & Blakely's absurd infatuation with mundane bread? Seriously, if you are going to attempt to pass it off as your core competency, shouldn't you at least make decent bread? I've had better bread at Cosi. Anyhow, I'd love to tell you more about the sandwich, but I might as well have been eating a lightly coated loaf of bread. I should also add that while it's not even tasty, it's incredibly overpriced to boot. It's also not filling. I ended up going to the Spy Diner (which unfortunately was only marginally better) afterwards. Service was fast, efficient, and friendly and the atmosphere wasn't annoying. It's possible that the crab cake sandwich is the worst item on the menu. I'll check back, but if I don't update in a month, it's because there is no reason to go here. I came here at lunch during the week and the place was really busy and it was very unorganized. There were no clear lines and the workers kept yelling "who is next?". I got a half of a Thai chicken wrap which was really good and reasonably priced. The salads looked pricey as you pay per topping. When I finally found my way over to the cash register to pay, the lady before me hadn't even gotten her credit card back before the cashier yelled 'who's next?'. I politely wait for the lady to at least put the card in her wallet before I move up and the cashier asks a second time 'who's next?' - sorry I don't want to shove this lady over. I go to hand her my Discover card and she was very rude and said 'we don't take that'. She scanned my card 3 times and after the third time she handed it back to me, didn't say anything else to me then yelled 'who's next?'. I had to request a receipt because I was nervous I had just gotten charged 3 times. The wrap was good but not good enough to make want to put up with these people again. read more

I love the blackened chicken here. It's amazing. I've had it in the quesidilla and salad and it fulfills my lunch wishes. It gets really busy here during lunch, but the lines move fairly quickly. Be prepared to only be in line once you know what you want because that's how the place runs, get your order and move onto the next. Of course the salad line can be a little difficult because there are so many options to create your personalized salad. I also like coming here with coworkers because I feel like there's something for everyone, though it is a little pricey. I don't have a particularly demanding palate; give me stale bread or an overcooked steak and I'll eat it with little complaint. I went to Devon and Blakely for breakfast. I got a bagel and a coffee. The bagel was fine, but the coffee was wretched. I took two sips and immediately decided I couldn't go forth. The coffee tasted like the beans had been soaked in ammonia for a full 24 hours before it was brewed. I just don't understand how this happens. It was also served in those gross 7-eleven coffee cups with the plastic lids that you have to pull back to drink. It was super cheap though, so my experience is mitigated. read more

Long time lurker. First time reviewer. Great tasting food here. Sandwich selection is extensive, and a little different than other sandwich shops. You can get your normal ham and cheese on wheat, but they've also got chicken gyros (Awesome-O!), mozzarella and tomato, etc. If you like particular ingredients, they've probably got it. Unless you're weird. Also, unlike some other places (Chop't), you don't have to buy a gallon bucket of salad. It's not the least expensive, but I'd rather save a couple bucks and eat a normal portion. Damn wavering self-control! Finally, it gets busy here at lunch, but the staff and D&B keep things moving while being pretty friendly. Overall, a great place to go for a brown bag lunch. read more

This is a lunch staple, commonly referred to as "High Class" around my office, but only because when it first opened, we thought it was sorta pricey. Since other business have since opened around it (like Organic To-Go and Chop't), I think they've come down on their prices. Fantastic food. Whenever I want a great salad, this is where I go. Their sandwiches are pretty good too. I highly recommend a small side of their Channa. I'm hooked. Can be a little hecktic and cramped after 12:15. Cute little place for lunch. It's like a mini Balducci's. Every single sandwich looks so delicious, it took me about 5 minutes to decide on the roasted eggplant and hummus on multigrain bread. YUM!!! It's kind of far from my office, but I will definitely hit this place up more often now than the NPC Food Court. It is a bit expensive, but it's definitely a more "gourmet" sammy shop. read more

I am writing this for my friend who is terrified to do this or call the manager. The food here is FANTASTIC. My bad review is actually in regards to a person who works here. My friend and I were there about two weeks ago getting salads made and she was asking politely for ingredients and then asked for an extra scoop of chickpeas and the salad maker (he's the tall, buff, handsome one) said so we could hear (plus we both speak Spanish as well) "puta" (it means b*tch or whore in Spanish). We were both polite the WHOLE time and said thank you after everything and for him to say this when we weren't doing ANYTHING to prompt it, or really saying it all, is INEXCUSABLE. If he doesn't like his job, he can quit. There are plenty of people who need a job. He NEEDS to be spoken to because I've seen him give attitude to other customers and honestly if he doesn't change, he needs to be fired. When you have someone mouthing off like that over your food, it makes you wonder if he's messing with the food at all... It's a shame because this place is great but my friend no longer wants to go and now I'm scared. read more

One of my co-workers has repeatedly mentioned "the sandwich place" that she loves so much so when she was heading up there for lunch today, I decided to tag along and find out just how good it is. We arrived ahead of the normal lunch rush and it was pretty empty so I got to take a good look around and go over my options without feeling pressured. They do things a little differently here - and I'm not a fan of how they do it. They have huge cases of pre-made sandwiches that you can pick from. Sure, they look great - but just how long have they been sitting there? I imagine they do this so they can get through a lunch rush easier by having all (or at least most) of the sandwiches pre-made. But if I want a pre-made sandwich, I'll go to a convenience store. Hell, I can go to one of those sandwich chains and get a freshly made sandwich for half the price of this place. But maybe the quality makes up for the price and question of freshness. Cuban sandwiches are one of my favorites and if they're on the menu, I've just gotta have one. Doing that also gives me a good benchmark of a place. They took the sandwich out of the case and put it onto the panini press. A few minutes later, I was all set to go. So does it live up to the hype and price? This was without a doubt, the blandest, most boring pressed Cuban I've ever had. Ever. The mustard was incredibly mild. The pickle was flavorless. Worst of all, the sandwich was cold. They just took it off of a hot panini press and the meat was cold. Devon & Blakely is overrated and underwhelming. I was not impressed with my recent lunch here, and I think it's because D&B's reach exceeds its grasp. Don't get me wrong -- I like the concept. The salads, sandwiches, soups, and desserts all look enticingly tantalizing. But the place failed to deliver on taste -- which is a big freaking deal when I'm paying this much. I've had a better chicken quesadilla from the grocer's freezer than the one D&B served up, and the carrot cake slice tasted like it was full of ingredients that I couldn't pronounce and that just might not be fit for human consumption. This place has great food. Nice looking sandwiches, wonderful salads (you choose your lettuce and then every addition has it's own cost), nice soups. Good for vegetarians!! However, before going into Devon and Blakeley, you must be prepared. This place is the Soup Nazi on steroids. It is crazy! Know what you want before you get there. It also wouldn't be a good place to eat your lunch after getting it.. it's too loud. Most people take them back to their offices, I imagine. You could always go over and sit in the park by the White House and eat.. that sounds just lovely. read more
