After eating here, I get why this place has fairly high reviews. What I don't understand is how this place operates itself. I came in on a Wednesday on May 24th at 3pm. They were out of a lot of things. Like 60% of what they offer. When the server offered me eggplant, there wasn't even any eggplant in the steamer! While some options I would not have ordered to begin with (like cauliflower), its annoying to think that so many items are out. Because I was nearby the area the next day, I went at 8pm and they still had 40% of stuff missing. I can understand that with a small staff that not every single item is going to be in full stock, I question whether this a management issue, or they don't care after lunch time? I ended up getting a gyro rice bowl. Lots of rice, a decent amount of meat, and skimpy amount of sides. With that said, the sides were delicious! The garlic sauce, spicy green sauce were great as well. They also offered a mango habanero, which was mango puree with specks of habanero. I appreciate the effort but the sauce could have been more harmonized in its heat. The gyro meat had plenty of savory flavor, but there wasn't much seasoning to it. The rice was good, but I thought it could have been a little more fragrant for my own taste. Overall, it satisfies and I ended up woofing it down after my workout with a smile on my face. read more

great rice bowl/wrap place on campus This restaurant is located in the Northside area of the campus. It's in a complex so there's a good amount of parking in front of the store. Inside, it has a couple of tables, and a window counter. Food wise, they have rice bowls, wraps, and a long counter of sides, sauces, and two types of rice. Service was friendly. We had the gyro over rice, falafel over rice, kofta over rice, falafel wrap, gyro wrap, gyro fries, mango cake, rose cake, samosas, chai, and mango lassi. First off the food was very delicious. The gyro was our favorite meat. It was moist, shredded thin, but not too thin. Kofta was also meaty and juicy. They break your kofta into pieces, so it's easier to eat. Falafel was also crunchy, and I liked that they make it smaller sized, so you can scoop up more falafel with the rice instead of having to cut it up yourself. Yellow rice was very flavorful, and I even enjoyed the lentil rice as well. I thought the lentil rice would be more dry, but it wasn't. I was a fan of all the sauces, they had seven different types. They have the heavier white and gyro sauce, but also tahini as a lighter option as well. All of the sides were a hit with the fam. Two things to note were that the mushrooms and sautéed onions had some spice in them, and the chickpeas could be a little softer. The sandwiches were both filling. Pita bread was soft and they both had a good amount of meat/falafel in them. One thing they do different is they add two of the sides in the sandwiches as well. Usually gyro places only add the chopped onion/tomato/lettuce, but at this place they let you choose which veggie/sides you want to include in the sandwich. The gyro fries are a great option when you want something heavy, but not a typical meat. There was a decent amount of gyro on it, and the fries had some slightly spicy powder on them too. They recently started including the chai and samosas, and it would make a good evening snack. As for the desserts, they were tasty as well. I prefer my baklava with a little more syrup, but I do have to admit it is a bigger size than most places. Between the cakes, I liked the mango cake more. The rose cake is good too, but I felt it had more cream compared to the actual cake. The mango cake has a lot of cream in it as well, but the pulp balances it out. I ordered the roasted broccoli which was well seasoned (may be salty for some). I'd probably make 2/3 of my selection the broccoli next time. I also had the house salad which was a mix of cucumber, tomato, and onion. Last, I had the couscous salad. It didn't have much flavor. It had chunks of bell pepper in it I believe. The server was really nice and made a great recommendation to mix the sauces! I did the white sauce with a little garlic and red spicy. The location was clean and aesthetically pleasing. I saw this place near UT Dallas, so I decided to check it out for a quick bite. While the employees were very friendly upon ordering my rice bowl, the flavor and quality were not there. I ordered a rice bowl with chicken and a lot of vegetables. The curried chickpeas and the chicken needed more depth of flavor. The chickpeas were too al dente; they needed more time simmer. I used to love this restaurant, and recommended it to so many of my friends, but in the last several months, the service has drastically changed. This restaurant used to be run by an older woman and gentleman, who were so kind, thorough, and always had delicious food prepared and ready to go. What happened to them? This restaurant under new management has resulted in a food experience that is drastically different: food options are limited because the staff say "it's out" because they don't want to cook another batch for a few minutes, the portions are significantly smaller, the vegetables and salads are not fresh, sides are dry, never have dessert options, etc. Please bring back the original management, so this place can be the gem it used to be. The concept is pretty much similar to Chipotle. Pick your rice, meat, and 3 sides. I had chicken and gyros with hummus, cucumber salad and pita bread. I liked everything except for the cucumber salad. The hummus was very tasty but a little salty. The meat were tender and flavorful. The spicy and white sauces were ok though. Don't get me wrong - the food here is amazing... when you can get it. Reading the reviews, it seems like the management has changed hands and it's largely absentee now. I've come here over the years and watched the level of service slide. The new owner doesn't seem to care if menu items are available as advertised or keeping the equipment running properly so that orders are ready as indicated. Also, the restaurant uses Square for their point of sale - not a problem unless you've received a discount code for customer loyalty (yay!) and the employees are completely clueless about how to apply it in store (boo!) I got the falafel rice bowl with onions and mushroom, chickpeas, and hummus. I was mostly impressed with how the onions and mushroom were sautéed and caramelized perfectly. Another thing I noticed was that the falafels were crunchy on the outside but easy to chew on in the side which made it much easier to eat and actually enjoy. Aside from any of the specifics, the meal was just absolutely mind-blowing delicious. Definitely the best halal food I've ever had, although very pricey. read more

You have the option to get veggies and other toppings in addition to your choice of either the yellow or lentil rice. I picked chicken as my protein and then opted for brussel sprouts, red potatoes, and the onion/mushroom mix. I wish the brussel sprouts were actually roasted like the sign said they would be, but the other veggies added some good flavor and texture to my bowl. The white sauce really ties everything together, so don't hesitate to get it over the entire bowl. The employees were very sweet and asked me how if I enjoyed my meal at the end since they knew it was my first time. I told him about my brussel sprout dilemma and they were very receptive. I walked out of there having spent $9 and had 3/4 of my bowl leftover because it's a very filling meal. But we may never know as our delivery driver messaged us to tell us WE needed to cancel our order (per the restaurant) because they were out of ingredients & couldn't make our food. Oh gosh I Love this place. In a perfect world, I would eat here everyday. The employees are always friendly, great attitude and stay smiling. The place is small and cute but welcoming. I always get my order to go since I live right around the corner. Yellow rice, falafel, broccoli, potatoes, the house salad and hummus on the the side. It's the perfect combination. I have never had a bad bowl and I'm sure I never will. Everything is always fresh. They ALWAYS make the falafels to order, which I love. I did go late ONE time and they were basically out of all the sides...lesson learned...never go late. But I guess it's a good thing, no food wasted. I have never tried a lot of the food offered and didn't want to order something I didn't like. He was so patient with me and explained the whole ordering process. He even recommended items for me to put in my bowl. The order style reminds me of chipotle. I tried the gyro meat with yellow rice. The meat was very tender. Everything I got was exploding with flavor and did not disappoint. The hummus was the perfect consistency. They had samples of basbousa to try and I ended up buying one because it was so good. Probably our new go-to spot for Halal Food. It appears to be a mom/pop shop where they were extremely friendly and helpful when explaining the menu and taking our order. We (a party of 3) ended up ordering the Baba ghanoush, Mango Lassi, (3) Build your own bowls with Chicken and Gyros and the loaded cheese fries. Everything tasted delicious and fresh. I am normally not a fan of Mango Lassi at Indian restaurants because of the thickness and heaviness but their version was very light and non-orange. The Baba ghanoush was as good here as anywhere else I've ordered it. The Bowl is where it sealed the deal for me, the meat was tender and NOT DRY. That is typically hard to do with chicken and I am very selective when it comes to that. The combination of tender but flavorful meats with your choice of sides and sauces just made it very personal and delicious. We will DEFINITELY be coming back and would recommend others to do the same! read more

I've been coming here since they first opened years ago. The food is consistently solid. What sets this place apart from other halal chicken and rice bowl competitors is their toppings. Whereas most of those Halal Guys style places just have a few vegetable options like lettuce, onions, and tomatoes, Chopped goes above and beyond with the topping selection. I highly recommend the chickpeas, sautéed onions and mushrooms, roasted red potatoes, and Mediterranean salad. My favorite protein option has to be the kofta: it's so much flavor packed into one kabab. I usually go with the half chicken, half kofta option and a bowl of that fills me up every time. Only downside is the red sauce: I like it hot and honestly, their red sauce isn't spicy to me at all. I'd actually recommend trying their green sauce instead since the jalapeño in it gives it a nice kick. read more

I got the rice bowl with chicken and gyro with onion and mushrooms, fried eggplant and some greens. Let me start of by saying I LOVEEEEEE eggplant. Their fried eggplant is AHMAZING! Definitely recommend trying it if you're an eggplant fan like me. Recently visited this place again and it honestly wasn't as good as I remembered it and I think it just depends on who's behind the counter. The lady who made my bowl drenched it with the white sauce but the man who made my dad's bowl barely put any white sauce on it. Delicious food that sets itself apart with unique toppings. This is a build your own Chipotle-esque joint. The portion could be bigger for the price but the flavor is good. The fried eggplant is a must try. Local Halal places like this put a particular NY based chain to shame. The location is convenient, being across the street from UTD so I am sure it is frequented by college students. I wouldn't let that dissuade you from trying it out even if you aren't a student. The space is pretty small though, with only a few tables so keep that in mind. You can always take it to go and find outdoor seating. When I last went the ordering was somewhat confusing, you go all the way to the right to begin building your order instead of going to the register right in front of the door. I really enjoyed my first Chopped experience last night! The girls and I came here on a recommendation (and to get that 20% off for a Yelp check-in) and it was awesome. I'm already planning my next visit! We got here at around 7 and about half the place was full, so there was a good selection of tables to sit at. There isn't a super large amount of room inside the restaurant, and most tables seat 4, but if you have a bigger group there's always the outside tables that can be put together and seat around 8. We had five in our party so we ended up moving one of the chairs at the high tables to the end of the table we picked. There's a lot of different selection here for toppings and customization! I've had halal from carts before but I really enjoyed this brick-and-mortar experience. Fried eggplant? Brussel sprouts? I've never had those toppings with halal before, but I loved them a lot. The fried eggplant had great flavor and the brussel sprouts were nicely browned and seasoned. My order was the rice bowl with yellow rice (girl who made my order was very gracious about giving me extra rice when I asked!), chicken and kofta, fried eggplant, brussel sprouts, sauteed mushrooms and onions, and copious amounts of white sauce. They definitely do not skimp on the portions; I was full after eating half my meal and am eating the rest for lunch today! The chicken and kofta were moist and well-seasoned; my issue with some halal is that the chicken gets dry and stringy and isn't very flavorful, which definitely wasn't a problem here. I also got some rice pudding, which wasn't too sweet (my jam) but very light and refreshing. One thing that probably needs to be worked out is the wait times for certain ingredients; I definitely understand wanting food to be fresh and hot for every customer, and under most circumstances I'd be willing to wait 10 extra minutes for potatoes or the falafel to fry, but not everyone is going to. I was able to try the roasted red potatoes and the falafel from a friend's order (she came a little later, when those were ready) and both were very good, so I will probably add them to my order next time! The falafel was actually moist and very flavorful; the last time I had it elsewhere it tasted like cardboard, but this definitely reaffirmed my belief in falafel. I would probably also ask for the white sauce on the side in the future so I could control how much was in each bite. Chopped also has a bunch of different sides that I wasn't able to try this time, but I'm looking forward to sampling them in the future. DFW is home to popular Halal places such as Big Guys (in Deep Ellum), Arabian Bites (Irving), and of course, the NY "The Halal Guys" (Richardson, Dallas). So, how does this new Chopped Halal Grill stack up against the others? Out of the four places in DFW, I would rate Chopped Halal Grill between Arabian Bites and Big Guys with The Halal Guys placing last. Home to the almost same selection (rice bowls, pita sandwiches, deserts) as the others, the quality here is solid, just a little pricey. I ordered the Chicken & Kefta Rice bowl, as they call it. It's not actually in a bowl, it's in a styrofoam container. However, what makes Chopped special is the many free add-ons you get with the rice bowl aside from your typical white, spicy, and Tzatziki sauce. The meat quality is just superb: very tender, fresh, and savory, both on the chicken and kefta side. However, what really pushed it to a 4 for me was the rice. Serving quality rice is important for a rice bowl (hence the name), and this place delivers. Though not as good as Arabian Bites rice; this place is pretty solid. In addition, since it's opening up walking distance from a college campus, I expect the place to be busy during the school year. It's a solid 4/5 in my book y'all. read more

Chopped Halal Grill is a trendy spot right within the bounds of UTD, and new to the area. Popular with college students, they serve the now popular in DFW, Chicken and Rice, with some twists. Purely food quality wise, they deserve 5 stars, but they have some improvements to make. First the seats inside are oddly small and slippery, and placed close together, making it difficult to sit comfortably, alongside friends or even just to eat. I found myself and others slipping out of our seats in seconds and had to take a seat outside. The interior itself is also pretty cramped, but space constraints leave them to use the most of the space that they have. It's a simple and small issue that causes a larger impact on the quality of my experience. In regards to the food, they have what is so far the best Chicken and Rice in the area thus far. Their white sauce is mild and creamy, and their hot sauce is much more flavorful and bearable, especially in comparison to the absolute nightmare that the Halal Guys here have. My favorite thing so far is their staple chicken, which is tender, juicy, and unlike the competitors, has its own quality seasoning and flavor. Something Halal Guys again loses on all accounts. Their chicken wings are also great warm, although make for a slightly problematic eating experience as you have to individually take them apart and then eat the rest of your fixings. In regards to such accompaniments, you can choose a yellow/lentil rice bowl, salad or pita with 3 and 2 toppings for the rice and pita respectively. They then have the options to add roasted potatoes, sautéed onions, Brussels sprouts, house salad, and hummus. One small issue is they were low on 2-3 items when I was there and it made issues serving for myself and following customers. Something again small, but could use improving. The meal was otherwise great, and definitely enough for a dinner, better than the other new Chicken and Rice places in the area. Overall, this place is my new go to for the classic chicken and rice. It's close to UTD, and the staff are very attentive and friendly, making a welcoming atmosphere. They've definitely won me over the other places in the area, and with a little upsizing and changes, they'll be just about perfect. read more

Okay, I've been waiting to review this place for a long time because it is my NEW FAVORITE HALAL RESTAURANT in all of DFW. Chopped Halal Grill is at 3000 Northside Boulevard, Richardson, TX and is conveniently located right by UTD. I think the best way to describe it is that it is a chicken and rice place, but let's get this straight: I've tried numerous chicken and rice places across this side of DFW and this place blows EVERY SINGLE ONE right out of the water! Okay. Let's get started with the review: Atmosphere 5/5: This place is really more of a takeout place, but it has a clean, modern look with ample seating for this type of restaurant. Sort of reminds me of a smaller Chipotle. (The Bathrooms are clean, too!) Taste 5/5: This is where Chopped really shines. A thing I've noticed is that, individually, the meat, toppings and sauce at a lot of these kind of places is pretty bland or alright at best. Every single ingredient in a Chopped rice bowl is delicious on its own, and when it comes together you'll understand why I love it so much. Chopped also has a lot of options other places don't have, like Roasted Red Potatoes, Sauteed Onions and Mushrooms and Hummus. The price is about the same as you'd pay at most places depending on the protein you choose. (DHRR also has a coupon for this weekend only so be sure to try it out while the specials last!) Service 5/5: This place is owned and operated by a Egyptian brother and his wife and they are always courteous and polite. Today the brother's wife served me and she was very friendly and attentive, getting each of my three rice bowls exactly how I wanted it. Customer Service is unfortunately where a lot of halal restaurants fall short and I am happy to say that that isn't the case here. Her service was so great I wish I could have tipped her but unfortunately I had no cash on me and they do not accept credit card tips. Overall 5/5: Chopped Halal Grill is a fantastic halal option out of the many chicken and rice places in Plano and Richardson and, in my own opinion, is the best.
