We were seated immediately at they serve hot barley tea instead of water. (you can ask for water). The inside is decorated nicely with plenty of seating great place for families and friends. They start you off with a fried fish and a couple of side dishes. I requested only the vegan side dishes. The big ones were bean sprouts and cucumber, and they were delicious. I ordered the dumpling tofu soup. As a vegetarian, it's very difficult to get delicious Korean food, but this was so good! The dumplings were really soft and the soup had a great flavor. It comes with a bowl of rice. The portions are plentiful, so come hungry! My friend got the Mixed tofu soup which he didn't like as much (wanted more meat).They also got the Bulgogi Bibimbap and order of the bulgogi which they enjoyed. As a Korean, this is my favorite casual, soft tofu soup spot in the area. Whenever I'm craving soondubu, this is where I go--I've always felt like soft tofu soup is one of those dishes that just tastes better at a restaurant, and this place proves it every time. I even brought my grandma here, and she approved, which says a lot. She specifically mentioned that they use good-quality rice, something she's never commented on at other restaurants. My go-to order is the mixed or beef intestine tofu soup--always satisfying and full of flavor. Pro tip: to easily debone the fish they serve on the side, press down along the back of the fish and it'll naturally open up and separate from the bones. I always love Cho Dang. The first one I tried years ago was in Federal way and we've been back since then, also the other location which is in Tacoma. Now they open one in Bellevue, in safeway complex with ezell fried chicken. Parking: so easy, free shared retail parking. Restroom: men and women restrooms This Bellevue location is twice the size of both Tacoma and federal way ones. No reservation needed for lunch, at least for us. It was quiet empty when we got there around 11:30 on Friday. But it filled up pretty quickly. Service: very nice and friendly ppl, but it was kinda chaotic a bit, it seems they dont know who covers what area to serve, because some ppl waiting to get their bill, some waiting to order or to get refill. But once you got their attention, they serve you right away and fast. What we ordered for lunch: Combo B : bulgogi + soon dobu - we chose beef for our tofu Seafood pancake Their food is still as good as I remembered. Banchan: refillable and so does the potato salad that came w the complimentary small fried fish. The fried fish is NOT refillable. Rice is included. Craving a soon tofu soup and we found this place. The restaurant is big and plenty of seating; we went for an early dinner but it got busy very quickly. Small menu but plenty if options; and they all look really good. The staffs were friendly and fast. What we got: Nakdol bibimpap (4/5) Big portion and very flavorfull. It came in a hot stone bowl and it stays super hot the whole time. Dont scrape the bottom and let it sit; the rice got so toasted and it was soo good. I personally think it was too much perilla leaves; but my wife loves it. Mushroom Tofu Soup (4.5/5) This was really good and very flavorfull. Plenty of mushrooms and tofu. You have to request for the egg if you want one. It came with a side of rice that served in a hot stone as well. I didnt get the egg but i recommend to get one. Haemul Pajeon (seafood pancake) (3.5/5) This was alright. Its on the thicker side so it wasnt as crispy. They put plenty of seafoods so it was good. The sauce for it also pretty good. Both of our meal came with banchans which were all good; and feied yellow croaker. Overall its a good spot We will go back for sure and try their other offering. How does this restaurant have a rating of 4.1? This is the BEST Korean restaurant in Washington -- and I'm Korean!! FYI: The three locations in Lakewood, Federal Way, and Bellevue used to be owned by the same person, but now I believe Bellevue is the only remaining original. The other two have changed owners, and you can definitely taste the difference. This place is hands down the most consistent Korean restaurant I've ever been to. The food tastes exactly the same every single time. I honestly don't know how they do it. Everything here is delicious. Came here since I was craving tofu soup, Cho Dang hit the spot. I had the kimchi tofu soup although there didn't seem to be that much kimchi in it. I did like the kimchi that came with the free banchan though, so should have asked for more of that to add to my soup. My husband enjoyed his galbi bibimbap, I had a few pieces and they were tasty. The stone pots are so hot! They really keep everything scalding. I understand the appeal but it really did hurt while starting out the meal. The seafood tofu soup was very tasty but I wish there was some more substantial seafood. The shrimp was tiny and packed with flavor, just not as satisfying as I hoped. We were seated immediately and all ordered the mixed tofu soup. MIXED TOFU SOUP (EXTRA SPICY) - 5/5 They have 5 spice levels from no spice to extra spicy. I opted for extra spicy (lvl 5) but tried my friend's spicy (lvl 4) tofu soup and thought that was more enjoyable - the spice didn't overpower the flavor at lvl 4. The set comes with fried fish and 4 side dishes per person. The service was really good! They kept coming back with the side dish cart to refill our side dishes without us asking. The restaurant is pretty big with many tables and has a clean and comfortable interior. There's plenty of parking in the plaza as well. One of my most frequented restaurants -- we go here when we want to guarantee a satisfying meal. I grew up going to the original location in Fed so I'm glad the Bellevue location still does justice to the food. This is hands down better than any soondubu in Seattle or Bellevue. My husband and I usually share a soondubu and bibimbap but this time we tried their relatively new menu item -- chicken bulgogi. I will say it is taxing at $30 but the combo is $35 and comes with soondubu. The non-combo option is mad expensive considering you can get a six pack of chicken at Costco for the same price but the combo is reasonable considering the soondubu by itself is like $19. Plus it tastes great! A little sweet for me but it's bulgogi so that's to be expected. We also tried the haemul pajeon (seafood green onion pancake) and it was delicious. My husband is a fan of this dish so we've tried it at many different restaurants and I was really impressed by how crispy the Cho-Dang version was. I think it's because they fry both sides and have a higher batter-to-ingredient ratio that they're able to achieve the level of crisp. I usually prefer more a more ingredient-heavy pancake (jeon) but the flavor was still great and the crispy-ness made up for it. Dipping sauce was very good too. They also give you barley tea! Another favorite of mine is the acorn noodle salad. It seems unassuming but it is the best salad I've ever had! This one is really close to where I live, but I had been avoiding this place cuz I thought it looked too expensive. I finally came with some visiting friends. I was wrong! They give a lot of food for the price, and the special service of personal banchan and fried fish was really nice. Cho Dang Tofu has been recommended by several of my family friends and so my family and I decided to give it a try one weeknight. Even on a weeknight though, the restaurant was PACKED with people, most who were of Korean ethnicity (which is always a good sign when trying a new Korean restaurant). Thankfully, they were able to seat us within about 15 minutes after arriving. Their menu is extremely extensive, but they do have many tofu soup (soondubu) varieties, which is what they're known for. They also have galbi (Korean short ribs), daegi (spicy Korean BBQ pork) and bulgogi (grilled marinated beef) as well as acorn noodles and different bibimbaps (rice dishes). My family ordered the BULGOGI and OYSTER TOFU SOUP (mild) combo, the DOLSOT BIBIMBAP, and the HAEMUL PAJEON (seafood pancake). You get one banchan (with unlimited refills) per dish. The banchan included kimchi, sesame sprouts, cucumber kimchi, fish cake, and fish cake. They also served a fried fish that was very bony (almost like a mackerel but without the excessive fishy taste) and a small scoop of potato salad (which was my least favorite as it wasn't sweetened). Even though it was super busy, we got our food within 15 minutes and all at once. The BULGOGI and DOLSOT BIBIMBAP were still sizzling loudly and the OYSTER TOFU SOUP was bubbling hot when they were served. THE BULGOGI was alright. It honestly needed to be marinated longer as it lacked the deep caramelized soysauce mix sugar flavor, but the meat was hot and tender. The DOLSOT BIBIMBAP was very good. It had all the usual vegetables including spinach, carrots, sprouts, mushroom, and zucchini. The rice was also super crispy in the stone pot and the egg melted perfectly into the dish. The waitress even poured in some hot tea to get the final bits of rice that were stuck to the dish. With a side of gochujang sauce drizzled on top, it was perfection. The OYSTER TOFU SOUP was excellent, and probably the best of all the dishes. It had large pieces of oyster and lots of tofu. The mild really wasn't spicy at all (you never know with Korean dishes), and so we would probably try at least a medium next time- the spice ranged from "no spice" to "extra spicy"). Even though it wasn't spicy, it was bursting with seafood flavor. No wonder their tofu soup is their signature dish! The HAEMUL PAJEON was also just okay. I've definitely had fluffier and crispier pancakes in the past. Regardless, the pancake had a decent amount of seafood and green onion. The dipping sauce was good too. Service was fantastic. Even with the dinner rush, the servers came by to refill our banchan and water multiple times. They were also super friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is clean, just crowded. A comforting bowl of hot tofu soup on a cold day makes for a delicious meal. This location is pretty big and parking is easy to find in the lot. There is lots of seating in this restaurant and staff is welcoming and friendly. I got their mushroom tofu soup mild. I should have gotten the medium spice level because the soup was good but not as flavorful as I'm used to at other tofu houses. I was also a little sad that it didn't include the egg. This is the first tofu house I've been to that doesn't do the included egg. I do appreciate that their banchan is tasty and also comes with a fried fish. Rice was delicious and perfectly cooked and they serve tea. In my opinion, this spot is a little pricier than I'm used to back in California but the food is solid and service is great. There really isn't a good list of Korean restaurants on Eastside that have affordable prices for they quality of food, but I think Cho Dang Tofu is definitely one of the better options on Eastside. We paid Cho Dang a visit on a Friday around 7pm and had no wait time to get seated. Cho Dang Tofu is located in the shopping plaza of a nearby Safeway, making parking accessible to the restaurant. During busy times of the restaurant, you may have to park in the shopping lot and walk over. The ambiance of the restaurant is sit down - the restaurant does do takeout orders, but the restaurant itself is cozy and has a decent amount of indoor seating options. I got the Nakdol Bibimbap, which came with some delicious banchan. The banchan consisted of a small fried fish, a wintermelon (? could also be radish) soup bowl, and small dishes of kimchi and fish cake. These dishes were delicious - the fish was fried to a pleasing crispiness, the soup had a comforting and subtle flavor, and the kimchi served as an excellent palate cleanser. As a plus, you can also ask your server for more of the kimchi/fish cake banchan too! For the Nakdol bibimbap, I would say that Cho Dang Tofu is generous when it comes to portioning - this was a hefty bowl of rice and octopus. As a heads up, as good as the flavor was, texture and taste does start to get a bit monotonous after eating half of the bowl. But there is a strong spice flavor and plenty of crispy rice, which is great. The Nakdol Bibimbap by itself is $20, which I think is a pretty solid price given the service and amount of food received. I personally think that in terms of Korean food on Eastside, Cho Dang is one of the more affordable options. The soup itself is pretty good, but I wish it was spicier. My friend's soup, which she got extra spicy, was barely spicy at all. The banchan is delicious, and the workers regularly come by and give you refills of them. The best part of the meal is at the end; when you finish the rice and only have the crunchy rice left stuck to the bowl, ask a worker to fill it up with barley tea and you can loosen the crunchy rice and eat it as a snack or with the leftover soup!
