Name of restaurant is an oxymoron. Chiu is Chinese and sushi is Japanese. Assuming its Chinese owned, the food definitely was not authentic. Very greasy/oily. It was a confusing experience choosing from the menu because of the cuisine fusion. I ordered some chicken teriyaki since you can't go wrong with that, it was ok. Expensive, but not too bad, the sauce was satisfying. They advertised cheap noodles but only had one on the menu. I am still confused thinking about it. Someone help me. read more

Ordered hot tea and it was just a cup of hot water that came with a tea bag, so was a little disappointed with that, though it's probably cleaner than if it's pre-brewed. Good for Baltimore, considering sushi options are limited. Came on a rainy Thursday for lunch @ 2:30. Dead empty. Just me. Started with a salmon temaki. Well made, fresh and delicious. 5 stars. Service was quick and pleasant too. Then came agedashi tofu. Was totally drowning in sauce so both the crispy texture and bonito were lost completely. RIP. The tofu itself was silky and nice but was literally in a tub of sauce. Then came my lunch order of tempura shrimp. This is where my star went. I don't know what kind of batter they use but it sure as hell isnt tempura/panko or anything else I know of. It was like day old fry batter that was microwaved. So chewy and sticky and really strange. I was so let down I almost complained. But I didn't because I was alone in the whole restaurant and it would have been awkward. Please note. Shrimp tempura orders mean 2-3 shrimp and 10+ random vegetables. Frustrating. This place is NOT authentic. Not Japanese. It is wholly run by Chinese. They are careful to serve the rice at just the right temperature -- it is not cold as many places do, which not only suppresses the flavor and the sweetness of the rice, but also makes it harder. I'm quite a picky sushi eater, so I was wary to try this place at first. However, I have been pleasantly surprised the few times I've been here. This place is cozy and has that warm mom-and-pop shop feel that's missing in a lot of Harbor East joints. I've ordered the sashimi and sushi combo each time, as I think it's probably the best value for what you get, compared to the other menu options. The fish came fresh and in thick slices - and it's apparently delivered daily. They have a wide selection of raw and cooked rolls, as well as the traditional Japanese raw and cooked dishes. While this isn't the best sushi ever, I'd say it's my favorite sushi place in Baltimore. Will definitely keep coming here whenever I have a sushi craving! read more

This place was fantastic! We got three specialty rolls to go and none disappointed! We are from NJ and have some pretty decent sushi places near us, and this was as good if not better! Our friend got the teriyaki chicken which he liked and my husband got some meat on a stick appetizer which he liked as well. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars was their online menu didn't work :(. I used to come here regularly every Friday night with my girlfriend (though haven't gotten the chance to in about a year). The service was always great, and we came here often enough that the servers recognized us and knew what we wanted, since we almost always ordered the same thing. What did we order? We usually got the Sashimi Deluxe (which comes with miso soup and a house salad), an additional miso soup, and sometimes a sushi roll if we were particularly hungry. For dessert, we always got the Tempura Ice Cream. The Sashimi Deluxe had yellowtail, tuna, and salmon (my favorite!) and was always very fresh and tasty, and I can't complain about the size of the pieces either. We've tried a few types of rolls: Triple Delight, Dynamite, Ya, Picasso, and perhaps a few others. Our favorite was the Triple Delight. The Tempure Ice Cream consists of vanilla ice cream surrounded by a thin, crispy layer of tempura. The portion is pretty large and it's delicious! Food is great, service is great! We debated between Chiu's and Taco Fiesta and chose sushi over Mexican. We walked in and we were immediately seated at the sushi bar. Our waitress came over and took our drink order right away. After browsing the menu we decided to order seaweed salad, salmon roll, spicy tuna roll, and a rainbow roll to share between us. We talked a little with the sushi chef while we waited and didn't have to wait long at all for our food. When the rolls came out they were nice and plump; it was plenty of food for the two of us and the seaweed salad was delicious. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and brought our check to the table along with hot towels for us to clean our hands. Chiu's was an excellent choice because the food was great and the service was fast. I was worried that they may take too long and we would be late for our movie, but we made it in time with a few minutes to spare. read more

Came here for dinner before a movie at the Landmark. It was a pleasant dining experience. Got seated very quickly, and the service was nice. Had baby octopus and salad sampler (calamari, jellyfish, and seaweed salad) as appetizers, and they were all delicious! Then we got the Gregg roll (salmon/avocado), Spicy Naruto (one of the cucumber wrapped rolls), and Uramaki (eel, japanese egg, avocado, etc). I probably visit chiu's sushi twice a month and let me tell you that the service might not be excellent, but it's worth the wait for the food to be served. The food presentation is very attractive and the quality of b taste is excellent. The reason why I recommend Chiu's Sushi is because of their consistancy in the quality of their food. If it's your first time, or still in the early stages of getting into japanese cuisine, this is b the place to go. P.s. This is probably the best sushi place in downtown Baltimore! They serve huge pieces of sashimi! And a huge list of sushi rolls, everything from raw to cooked sushi. I love sushi and this place is overpriced for their terrible sushi. I had the spicy tuna roll that had no taste and several of their specials. The rolls were small and the sushi did not taste that fresh. I was highly disappointed by their sushi and I left feeling not satisfied with my meal. My girlfriend had never been to Harbor East before and wanted to try out some restaurants. We both love sushi and the menu seemed pretty extensive, so what could go wrong. We sat down and were given ok service, the four or so women working chatted in Chinese a few tables from us until we looked towards their direction. Once we received the food, it was adequate. Chiu's Sushi in Harbor East is a convenient takeout spot for days that I need more of a meal than just a coffee before class. They make a "crunchy fire roll" that approximates that of XS, and I've had it a few times. Usually it's pretty decent - though nothing that I'd go out of the way to get. The fish is fresh, the shrimp is fresh, the service is pretty quick. It's not as fresh and delicious as my usual favorites, but convenience and location are in its favor. The most recent time that I got takeout, however, the fish was very bland and not nearly as fresh as usual. The restaurant's never all that busy - and at times, even though ordering on a day that should be safe freshness-wise, you're going to get less than great food. I was visiting Baltimore on business and staying nearby. I saw Sushi and thought I would check it out. I saw the name Chiu, and was a little phased as the only Chius I know are Chinese, not Japanese. I decided it was expensive enough that it the fish would be good. I travel a lot for work including many trips to Japan, and this is the second worst sushi I have had in the last year. Props to the chefs, the presentation is perfect, almost mechanical, but the fish was just horrible. Nothing was melt-in-your mouth wonderful or full of great flavor. I have had much better fish from airport sushi restaurants. I cannot comment on any of the rolls, as I ordered Yellowtail, Maguro Tuna, Halibut and Tamago. They had a very limited selection of fish available as well. I ordered a cucumber salad with crab, and the crab ended up being strings of artificial krab meat. For the price, this place really lets down as far as sushi goes. Pre tip $30 for 8pc sushi and a small cucumber salad. I hope the standard Japanese fare is better, but cannot comment. read more

I don't give five stars easily and I have to say this place deserves every one of them. We were greeted with friendly smiles and welcomes. Seated to hot towels and menus with a plethora of rolls (raw and cooked) to select from. Service was great and the sushi was fantastic. Rolls were fat and nigiri was sliced thick. You get your money's worth for sure. There were two (very) minor negatives. The first is that the sushi chefs don't speak much and don't seem to have much personality. The second is that I was charged $1.95 for my green tea and I've not been in many places where they would charge you for green tea. After we were finished we were given fresh hot towels to clean up with and some Japanese bubblegum along with the check. All in all I wish this place was closer to home.
