I wish we could give negative star ratings. There are many, many other Peruvian restaurants all over SoCal (especially in Van Nuys), from the Mom-and-Pop small 'hole-in-the-wall' locations to the largest, upscale establishment, and *any* of them will give *far* better value for the money than Chios does -- and probably, much, much better service. Chios' surly, indifferent waitstaff alone (including an older woman who is nothing less than outright rude and openly dismissive) would be a reason to avoid this place. Watery, tasteless sauces; small, overpriced portions, meats that are poorly prepared (dry, unevenly cooked) and nothing tastes fresh -- the chicken tasted old, and we decided not to risk it. Even for take-out orders, you can expect to wait unreasonably long times, and thoroughly check your order before leaving -- it will be handed to you as if it's complete, but things will be missing; it happened both times we'd tried take-out orders. And yes, they'll argue about it. We'd gotten tired of fighting the terrible parking situation and horrible service, and was hoping take-out might be a way to avoid both of those issues, but the poor quality of the food caught us. It wasn't horrible the first time, but it went from 'meh' to WTAF in a few months. Three chances are about the limit of my patience. Peruvian cuisine can have complex dishes, but Chios manages to do poorly on even the simple things -- like, salt is not one of the four food groups, it's supposed to be a seasoning. I don't know how the owner can ignore these issues if they want a restaurant of which they can be proud -- it's not hard to train staff to be competent, attentive, and polite, or change them out if they act like jerks. Good recipes are all over the place, and if a fumblefingers like me can make an Aji de Gallina that's to die for, what's the excuse of the kitchen staff at Chios? Sheesh. Avoid at all costs. read more

I was craving Peruvian food and didn't want to drive to Santa Clarita to my favorite Peruvian spot. I found Chios Peruvian Grill on yelp and from the pictures I thought it was worth a try. Very busy on a Saturday afternoon with nice Latin music in the back ground. I ordered a seafood soup. It was a bit on the salty side and it is a little pricey but it was very satisfying. Parking sucked as someone blocked me in and they had to call the towing company. Customer service was very good. The ladies checked in on me several times and both of them tried really hard to find the owner of the car that blocked me in. Will definitely be back to try their Lomo Saltado and Yucca !! I got a peek of the chefs in the kitchen and they are the real deal. Authentic Peruvian food. The food makes me want to go to Peru ! read more

As a Peruvian I am very picky with what restaurants can make GOOD Peruvian food in the San Fernando Valley. Chios is one of the closest ones that makes me feel like home. Out of the 3 locations I know the Van nuys location, intersection with Stagg St. and Sepulveda Blvd is the best! (Plus you can drink beer there! The service is crucial shout out to the ladies there who are taking orders like crazy and always smiling! Ambiance could be adapted to outside or indoors, I have to admit that the parking situation is a hustle but nothing can ruin to have such a good time eating good Peruvian food at a decent price! read more

Took my mom here for lunch because Pollo on Sherman was closed so we decided to try this place. The food was good but I will say these prices are way too high for what it is and also they put a convenience fee on top of it so I just had to take it out of the very nice waitresses tip because I didn't understand the convenience fee so other than that food was good service was good prices are terrible. Will not return. read more

Came here with a big group and they were so gracious with us. The food is amazing. I had the fish ceviche and tried the octopus...so good! My kids shared a lomo saltado which they loved as well. Will definitely be coming back! read more

Food was okay... the fries were blah I got charged a credit card service fee and I paid cash! Double check your receipt for that Service was okay. The waitress took a long time to get our check but she was alone and it was lunch time so it made a bit of sense. read more

I used to live in our nation's capital. There was a Peruvian chicken place name El Pollo Rico. For over two decades, I would use my memory of this phenomenal restaurant to fulfill my craving for their yummy food and fries. Those days are over! I came here for their chicken family special on Mon afternoon. It's only from Mon-Wed. It's a whole chicken plus a half chicken with 3 sides and a 2 litter soda for $24.99. Not a bad deal. :) For the 3 sides we got the salad, fries, and plantains with a bottle of coke. Inca cola is too sweet for me. LOL This place is literally around the corner from my house but I called to order take out since it was New Year's Eve. They said it would be ready in 15 mins so I rushed over. When I got here, there was a sign that said - Cash only. Credit card down. Sorry for the inconvenience. I was like...Luckily, I have cash, but I wish they would have told me that over the phone or my experience would've been very different. Also, when I got here I still had to wait for my food for another 10 mins. Not a huge folly because I wasn't in a hurry to get home. Now the thing that always bothers me is when I come into an establishment and the tables are not buss'd in a timely manner. It makes the restaurant look dirty. So, I sat near the register to wait for my food and noticed there were two tables that hadn't been cleaned. There was one waitress who was taking orders, serving, and cleaning the tables. Poor thing! Oh, by the way...our food was good. It fed a family of 4 adults with no problem and we had left overs. Between the 2 sauces given, my fave was the yellow sauce, but the green one was okay. Next time only yellow sauce. LOL Find me here soon because they sent coupons in the mail. Woohoo! P.S. The parking at this location sucks. It's so tiny that people park tandem. And good luck if you can find street parking. :/ read more

I really wanted to like this place. As a Peruvian growing up eating comida criolla all the time, I wanted my local spot to be good and just hit the spot. Unfortunately, I'm here leaving this review. I spent 50 dollars on Chaufa and Tallarines Verdes with Milanesa. Very standard Peruvian dishes. The value isn't there. Chaufa needs more soy sauce... I'm not a chef but it needs something. Considering they really don't put a whole lot of ingredients in it, it needs a lot more flavor. Tallarines tasted like Alfredo pasta or something. If the price is 50 bucks for 2 dishes (with no drink) there just needs to be lot more flavor. Staff is friendly, and I can always appreciate people being nice. read more

I had been wanting to try this place for years. People told me how good it was and it seemed to always have customers sitting outside (pre-COVID). I placed an order via an app on my phone on December 4th and went to pick it up. When I arrived I was told that they were not fulfilling any orders because they were "out of meat" so they couldn't make anything at the moment. I won't give a negative review for the fact that no one bothered to tell me before I drove over. Indeed, Chios staff blamed that problem on the food app, Yelp, which places orders with GrubHub. GrubHub said call Yelp, which doesn't have a phone number so you could imagine I'd be wasting so much time trying be upset with someone. But I will say, as a person who worked thirteen years in the restaurant business, that what the experience taught me was that all day, while someone was working in the kitchen of Chios, they never thought that maybe someone should go get some meat until they were out. "hey chef, we're running out of meat; should I go get some?" "Nah, let's wait until later when we're completely out." And then, once they got my order, someone working there also decided, "hmm, I guess we'll do nothing about this order that can't be fulfilled" until I showed up. So, those things tell me something about a business. I thought they were struggling during COVID, but clearly not too much to be sure to get some more meat or to tell a customer not to come in who had already placed an order for said meat. read more

I looooove this place! I now have been in every Chio's location and I am so obsessed with Peruvian food. Pescado frito $12.99 is by far the best starter. It is perfectly fried with a light flakey crust, the fish is veey moist. Lomo Saltado ~$14 - the best thing you can order! For those who haven't had Peruvian food before, this is my recommendation. You won't be disappointed. Slices of tender, grilled steak over a bed of perfectly grilled veggies, served with thick cut fries and steamed rice. The accompanying sauce is exquisite. It's got a touch of Asian flavors as well. There are other fantastic items as well, including various ceviches and pasta dishes. Come and try everything! Cheers! read more

I found this place through LivingSocial, so glad I did! I called to place an order and picked up. The waitresses here are super friendly. I love how my food was neatly packed and ready to go as soon as I arrived. Even though the lomo saltado is sitting in beef liquid juices I was so happy that it made it home just that way. Like I said, they pack really good! No one rolled their eyes or looked shocked when I used a deal. They thanked me as if I was a full priced paying customer. I felt welcomed and appreciated. The food I ordered, lomo saltado and the chaufa de carne were both delicious! I found the lomo a bit on the salty side, but it was still delicious. I enjoyed every last bite and was so glad I had enough for leftovers The next day! Try it, you will love it! read more

I found a tomato in my leche de Tigre,I asked the server she said "I guess it's supposed to have ,I'm not Peruvian so I would not know" she went back in, came back and took my plate she said sorry they messed up they weren't supposed to put tomato in there. She brought me back the same glass she said "sorry about that they took off the tomato it was just a small chunk. Was craving some Saltado for a while. I ordered takeout and was disappointed for a second time. The portion of fries doubled the portion of meat/veggies. There wasn't enough broth to even cover half of the fries. I understand separating the fries for takeout so they don't get soggy but overall this dish is likely best to get fresh instead of takeout/delivery. Also got the Yuca a La Huancaina, but they forgot the cheese sauce. Even kindly requested extra Aji sauce that I didn't receive, which would've helped with the fact the Saltado lacked broth and the yuca lacked its own sauce as listed. Overall a dry, overpriced experience. read more

All in all this place has been on my list for a few years now and I'm glad I finally went. I enjoyed what I experienced so far but I'm willing to go back to get the full nine yards.
