A happy birthday lunch was had here for our first visit - and we're better for it. I got the Burrito Saltado and my birthday buddy tried the Lomo Saltado. We shared a side of fried plantains. I'm a sucker for a lot of fusion-esque burritos that wrap up traditional cuisine dishes in a flour tortilla. The tortilla usually tastes of higher quality (ALWAYS a highlight) and I was most interested in having a familiar dish spun a little differently. It did not disappoint when it came to the expected flavoring of the veggies and lomo saltado style steak. There was plenty of filling and it sang with the aji verde and orange pepper sauces, but it ultimately was not a revelation. The traditional Lomo Saltado plate was not culinary brilliance either, but it was the favored of the two selections, as it featured the grill in the back of the kitchen more effectively. Anything that is exemplary of mainstay dishes from a regional category is still very special, and this plate will be worth returning for. That, and of course the Inka Cola I've always had to order with my Peruvian plates, where available. This place boasts really good roasted chicken and when you see working men order the la brasa by the basketfull for lunch, you start making conclusions about what an authentic experience at an establishment looks like. So we plan to eat what the regulars do upon the next visit. We weren't burned for starting with the cow though. Guess I had to have my birthday steak one way or another. read more

I was missing the food from my trip to Peru, so I decided to satisfy that craving at this place. Overall, my cravings were satisfied and I was happy with the whole experience. The restaurant even reminded me of the feel of restaurant in Peru, it felt authentic. They have amazing Lomo Saltado, which had the perfectly cooked filet mignon, juicy tomatoes and had the right amount of sauce. The ceviche was exactly what I was expecting based on all the ceviche I ate in Peru. I love that it was sweet potato on the side to balance the flavors of the dish. I'm usually picky with the sauce for the Papa a la Huancaina but this place had the texture and flavors I was looking for. We ended our meal with picarones, which I highly recommend. It came out hot and fresh! To top it all of, the server was friendly and always smiling. We felt at home. Parking was super easy since they have a parking lot beside the restaurant. Food is a bit overpriced but good. HOWEVER we went for breakfast because the website said they had a breakfast menu...and they didn't have any of the items except for tamales. Also they serve you tamale and don't give you bread/don't offer bread during breakfast at all. If you're Peruvian you know tamale and bread together are a MUST! Please don't mislead customers and remove the breakfast menu from your site if you aren't offering it. Such a shame too because that breakfast menu looks good! read more

I've had the lomo saltado and beef arroz con chaufa. Food is great and authentic Peruvian. Downside is that it's pretty pricey for a lomo costing almost $20. The interior is spacious and you can even catch some sports games while dining in. The play that I work at usually orders dinner from Takatis once a week. Bonus that I get to try everything on their menu and have loved everything I've tried so far! Van Nuys may not seem like much, but she's got it where it counts! A few of us came by for lunch today, two of us being our first time and the third who has frequented before. We usually go to Pura Sabor but this time us newbies wanted to try something, well new! We actually looked at the menu beforehand and called ahead to order and have the food ready to eat their by the time we arrived. We did this because our co-worker who has been here before says they make everything fresh and it takes a while for the food to arrive, so best bet is to order ahead and we can dig right in when we get there without rushing back after lunch. I ordered the sanguchon sandwich with a side of yucca fritas and a chicha morada to drink. For dessert we all shared the picarones. Wow this sandwich was amazing! The pictures made it look so good and it tasted even better than it looked! Toasted bread with a nice crust and soft fluffy interior, not dense or heavy, but the sandwich itself had good weight! Juicy, flavorful and tender pieces of chicken, and lots of it! Thick slices of sweet potato, crispy papas, lettuce, mayo, and some other goodies I am not sure of. The yucca fritas were delicious as well, super crispy on the outside and very fluffy and warm on the inside, and they come out like steak fries! The table is set with three sauces, mild medium and hot. All three have unique flavors and textures and all three taste great on anything you put them on! Mix them up for something even better! The chicha morada here seems lighter but sweeter than Pura Sabor, both of which are delicious but I prefer the one here. It seems that because the drink is constantly churned in the dispenser thing (forgot the name) it keeps the flavors mixed and thorough. My co-workers ordered the pollo a la brasa and lomo soltado which they loved! Oh and that dessert . . . the Peruvian "donuts", picarones. Crispy, golden fried sweet potato somethings with an amazingly crispy exterior, and a soft thick interior. Just like eating mashed sweet potatoes but then it gets kicked up a notch with the molasses like sauce! Not too sweet, almost tastes like it could be a side dish, but very good and unique! I may not know Peruvian food well. But I love what Takatis serves. First, the salsas are a must, can't help but want some of each flavor on everything. The Lomo Saltado had some good fries and the Marinade of the meat was excellent. Tried it in the burrito, best to order double meat. As for the Chicken dinners, I think I prefer this style seasoning better than Jamaican Jerk. The beans are are seasoned well and can be a meal of their own. If ordering the Sweet Potato Fritters try to eat them quick as they don't reheat well and get really soft. The purple sweet corn drink is a great finish. read more

My wife from Northern Peru and I have tried so many of these restaurants in Southern California, but this seems to be the best and most authentic we have found. The owner's mother is from Piura (near my wife's hometown of Chiclayo) and she immediately recognized the care and special seasoning that went into the outstanding anticuchos (with several types of dipping sauce) and pescado frito (lightly breaded fried fish) that was done to perfection. Similarly, the maricuyao (passionfruit) and chica morada (purple corn sweet drink) were also fresh, not canned. A meal with chicken, rice, and a side was less than $10. The staff were very friendly as well. It isn't in the nicest part of van nuys but I didn't feel unsafe either. The lomo saltado has strips of steak stir fried with red onions and tomatoes with fries over rice. Yes, carb overload but so delicious.
