OK I said I wouldn't go back, but when you are craving meat and Chinese style there aren't many choices in the area and the price is good! I was so happy to see that the lady at the front counter was very nice and even smiled!! What a treat! Then, the server who never smiles, smiled at me!! I was so happy!! That made me feel welcomed and valued as a customer. I hope it was due to my last review! The food seemed to come out more often than usual at lunchtime so some of my favorites I got to have fresh. I have been a Great Fan of the CHINA WOK restaurant for many, many years. While offering a wide array of buffet style Chinese food, sushi, and dessert items, I confess, my Favorite is their Green Beans at the Chinese food buffet steam table. My only Disappointment Is, that I Assume the Operators of CHINA WOK, MUST BELIEVE, that it Cuts Way to Far into their Profit Margins, to Toss a Fortune Cookie packet or two, into a customer's, buffet, take-out order. Like just about everything Post Covid, this dining venue has changed. Apparently under new management both the food and the tenor of the place has changed. While American Chinese food preferences are very personal, where I once enjoyed the taste, spice and feeling of the China Wok, I now find the food has become bland and the once spicy, hot soup has become neither. The kicker is the once complimentary hot tea now commands a dollar a cup charge. No refills were offered. There really are no other Chinese food offerings in Bennington, so it will be quite a while before we go out for Chinese food again. The take out is decent. Eating there means tolerating the hollering going in in the kitchen and the non-smiling waitresses. It almost seems like no one working there is very happy about it. EAT HERE IF YOU DO NOT VALUE YOUR LIFE! I've been to this place about 50x. The food has always been meh, the service non-existent, and the food safety practices questionable. Well yesterday I went in. It was 4pm on a Wednesday and very slow for them. I go in, fill a plate and start eating. Everything was cold and old. The boneless ribs were like beef jerky, the crispy green beans were so old, they had the consistency of snot, and the sesame chicken was like chewing a sponge covered in sugar. Everything had clearly been held way past its time because they are cutting costs by not throwing dangerous, old food out. If they do bring out a new tray, it's just mixed in to whatever is left. I took one bite of each item and it was so bad I had to stop. I went to the counter, told the lady I was not satisfied and very politely asked for a refund. Keep in mind that I was a regular customer and my expectations started at the lowest possible level anyway. I was told that I can only get a refund when the owner is in. Okay, no big deal, it's not about the $12, it's just basic principle. I go in the next day and the owner is not in again. The lady tells me I have to wait 10 minutes for him to get in. Sure thing, again, it's just an issue of principle. Well the lady at the counter was clearly bored of her YouTube videos and decided to tell me that I was wrong. I asked her if she was saying that the food yesterday was fresh. Her response was, "no one else complained". That's a SCARY response to that question. I told her the food was old and gross and that I know that she was aware of that. She kept telling me that I was the only one with a problem. Then I did what I should have done right away. I told them to keep their $12 and contacted the local Board of Health. Going through the reviews, it seems several people have claimed to have gotten food poisoning from this place and also had similar experiences trying to get a refund. All in all, I'm out $12 plus about $40 of my time value. If this review saves one person from a hospital trip or a day on the toilet, I say it was worth it. I'm not from this area. Upon entering, the lady at the desk yelled loudly "how many? Want drink?" We were seated in the dining room- the servers were pleasant and attentive. There were small Ants on the table. It appeared clean but we noted it after getting our food. Not the quality we hoped for- you use your spoon to get ice cream which resulted in ice cream all over our hands- and undoubtably all over the hands of the people who had served themselves before us. The food is always tasty and very hot. When going to a buffet, your expectations shouldn't be that high. There is a language barrier. They have never did anything to make us not come back. Apparently under new ownership since Covid, the China Wok offers reasonably priced lunch and dinner fixed priced buffets as well as well prepared a la carte American Chinese food offerings. While tap water is offered at no charge with the meal, soda is an additional cost and even hot tea, which previously had been included with the meal, carries a dollar additional charge. There seems to be an unwritten rule that staff may not smile or engage in any non-business conversation but service is efficient, the restaurant is clean and given the lack of other real alternatives, the Chinese American Cuisine is the best that Southern Vermont has to offer. I will more frequently take advantage of the take out menu than the buffet but if you are looking for some decent Chinese American food at a good price in a clean restaurant with plenty of parking and no real distractions the China Wok is consistent and reliable. read more

Okay, if you know a lot about Chinese cuisine like Hunan style, Cantonese, and Szechuan (and you have traveled widely)....then this ain't the place for you. I would say the only items on the menu that are authentic are the soups: egg drop and sweet & sour (with real wan yee). It is a place for the locals; yes, it can be a real cattle call, but the place is clean, a good value, and the servers are fast and professional---- and reserved with minimal pidgin English skills. very bad service. lady at the register charged me for 2 meals at buffet and I was alone. she refused to give me a refund for one meal and offered a gift certificate instead. when I explained that I am not local and may never be in this area again she still could not do it. This place is continually going down hill. We went on a thursday night. They must have had some problem in the kitchen because pans would go empty and stay that way. We walked in to 2 pans empty and an hour later they were still empty with 4 more. They tore down the sushi station and the sushi got warm...YUCK. People were still taking it. The waiter would pick up dirty dishes from tables but never refilled any drinks. We asked twice and he just walked away from the table. The food hasn't changed in probably 10 years, lunch and dinner are almost exactly the same food! The bathrooms were out of order they were telling people to go to Home Depot. One couple had paid, gone to HD to the bathroom and then had to argue with them to not be charged again! These people hadn't even sat down, let alone ate any of the pitiful small selection. We paid full price for about half the selection of food there should have been. It was horrible. read more

Amazing food at unbelievable prices. Also, it's incredibly clean for a Chinese restaurant. Having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for a long time, it was refreshing to find that the lack of cleanliness in the Chinese restaurants there is just a weird, local quirk. Went based on previous reviews and I should have know from the second we walked in that this was not the place for us. Buffets are always better in theory than practice. We walked in to be greeted by a man who spoke no English and was unable to answer any questions. He simply indicated the price and asked if we wanted sodas. They are not included in the price. For two it was approximately $24. I should have listened to my gut and walked out the second I walked in, but I paid and we went into the buffet space. The food is laid out in three separate tables, with a fourth station for ice cream. Not everything was labeled, and the items were mainly fried dishes. There was also pizza for some reason, along with sushi and random things like stuffed potatoes. The dining room is pretty basic, no real decor, and while one of the girls working seemed friendly when she wasn't on her phone, the girl who got us drinks and acknowledged us when we walked in and asked where we could sit only gave us one word answers. I don't know if this was rudeness or a language barrier thing, but it wasn't pleasant. We both cautiously tried the buffet, picking at half of each plate before deciding to leave. I couldn't shake the feeling that eating there was a terrible mistake and my fiancé was really put off by some of the sanitary aspects of the serving utensils and things. I wouldn't go there again and wouldn't recommend it. There were other people there and I guess it was okay, I just couldn't eat there. It really wasn't up to the standards I have for food. We got some lunch at the ice cream/sandwich shop down the road (Billy somethings) and that was pretty good and cooked fresh, plus there are other places to go. He entered our totals in the register, so I took my card out to pay, and he said I could pay at the table or now. So I gave him my card, then he tried giving it back to me and said it was up to me. So... I gave it back. $19.75 for one adult and one kid. That's a little ridiculous to me, but okay. We were told to seat ourselves, umm okay. Found a table. Went to get food. They don't even have dumplings!!! This place sucks. The food is gross. The crab Rangoon's are wicked bitter, and the cream cheese filling is dried out. The sweet and sour sauce had a hard gel layer on the top and I had to push it to the side with the ladle to get some. We decided to get drinks, went back up. I gave him cash this time, he gave me $2.50 back. That is a solid price for two fountain drinks. He didn't ask me what we wanted to drink, I asked him if I was supposed to get the drinks myself, and he gave me my money back. I asked him again if I was supposed to get my drinks, and he told me to pay at the table. So.. again, I asked if I was supposed to get my drinks and he took the $2.50 back. I'm not joking, you can't make this stuff up. I went over to get our own drinks, and this crazy, rude waitress yelled at me and said she would get them. I told her what we wanted and she came back almost 10 minutes later with our drinks. This food is gross and I'm out $23 Screw this place. read more

We had bad experiences here visiting last year, twice, and gave up but heard they had really revamped.....we had two so-so lunches if you like American sweet sticky sauce Chinese food, over all a C- both lunches...sure, lets try dinner...there's really nowhere to eat in Bennington...then DISASTER, ordered Pu Pu platters ahead of time for a party and I think they forgot and just took luke warm food off the buffet to fill the order, missing many items and had multiple sibstitutions that we did not want...Zero Stars especially because we ordered the day before so we didn't surprise them...we just now went back to give them one last chance and use the gift certificate they gave us and ordered 3 seafood dishes...UGGHH, we returned them and wont be back, all three had shrimp in them that were not cleaned at all and two dishes the shrimp were whole uncleaned and had the shells on...I think they grabbed the shrimp off their cold shrimp bar and tossed them in the food...TERRIBLE..and you have to keep in mind that they dont have a health inspector of any amount in Bennington County, so enjoy your Bennington Revenge, never mind Montezuma's....what a dump this state is...skip this place and honestly all in Bennington....in 45 minutes you can be on Wolf Road in Colonie Olive Garden Red Lobster PF Chang's Cheesecake Factory...it's still a run down dump of a town and big box restaurants but at least they know to clean the shrimp!! read more

Personally, I've never had a good experience going to China Wok in the almost 8 years I've lived in this town. The food goes cold by the time you walk from the buffet to your table, it's all fat, and the food is pretty gross. Last time I went (I was dragged, had no choice) I didn't even eat anything and they still charged the extra plate. My advice? I have eaten at this Chinese restaurant several times, and each time I say NEVER AGAIN. Why? Because as a vegetarian I cannot partake in the buffet like I can at other Chinese buffets. They don't have signs telling what the different dishes are. So all I can get is the Steamed Vegetables which is very boring. There are no veggies on the buffet except string beans. The so called sushi is not interesting. Just rice and seaweed with some fake seafood. But the worst part of this place is the staff. I haven't seen a more unpleasant group in all of my experience eating out. And as some else commented, they do not refill the sodas. We were in town and walked in for take out. I really wanted dumplings. We were told we could not order from the menu and had to fill containers from the buffet and pay by weight. The buffet did not have dumplings. The offerings were standard "american" Chinese food. It was okay, some better than others. Getting take out from a buffet isn't great. It has been sitting on warmers there and then sits in the containers till you get to the destination to eat it. Would have likely enjoyed it more if we ate there. A pretty good variety. Good Food/Awful Service! I will admit I go here fairly often with a friend simply because the food is good and the prices are fair. Typically the greeters at the counter are nice, not always though. My biggest complaint is that the waiters are beyond rude, instead of being nice and polite they say things like "are you done with that?" "are you getting more food?" "do i need to get you more to drink?" Reading it doesnt sound so bad, but they dont sugarcoat it and are rude. I went there late one night an hour before they close and one waiter was cleaning tables, it was me and a friend and one other party of people there, rather than wait until all of us were done eating the waiter reached over me and my friends food, while we were eating to refill our tables Soy Sauce, that to me is completely unacceptable, disgusting, and completely rude! I've also found that they bring their children to the workplace and actually put them to work, i may not understand their culture, but here in the US it is illegal to have children who are no older than 12 years old working a cash register and cleaning tables. Once again if it weren't for the good food and prices i would have reported them to the Better Business Bureau by now. read more

This place is a dump. A taste-free experience. Any Chinese buffet that thinks things like macaroni n cheese or pizza (or whatever) are Chinese food cannot be taken seriously. Really. Unless they believe Marco Polo also brought mac n cheese and pizza back to the West from China. Personally I don't think that is the reasoning behind some of the stuff in their buffet. Maybe they think some locals, or tourists looking for an authentic liberal Vermont experience, like Asian-New England fusion food, and can heap together some of the stuff at the buffet and create Broccoli in Sharp Cheddar Garlic Sauce, Chop Suey with Maple Syrup, or General Tso's Pizza. Nouvelle (Con) Fusion Cuisine. Personally I think they just don't give a damn. Last time I went in there (and it will be the last time ever now that I found real Chinese food, NYC style real Chinese food over on the main road to Albany in Troy NY where plum good cooking is blossoming ), the wait staff acted like you were interfering with their busy lives when you wanted to actually order a menu meal and wanted tea or a glass of water. Bennington needs a real Chinese Restaurant. Anyone remember the Panda restaurant in Manchester VT? Gone. That was Chinese food, NYC style.
