I'm always satisfied with the food that I get. The waiting staff are very attentive to your needs, like they immediately fill up your glass cup after you drink all your water. However, this does make it seem like you are being watched, but the delicious food makes up for that lol. Overall, I enjoyed my takeout experience here, but it was a mixed bag when it came to the food. My lamb dopiaza was really good, with enough spicy and flavor. The portion was quite large as well. However, the chicken tikka masala, which I thought would be a safe pick, could have been one the worst I've experienced. The sauce was sweet and resembled sweet ketchup. We asked for both mains for be spicy to the horror of my partner who thought they kitchen staff might go nuts but nothing was too spicy. We had the sag paneer and cauliflower dish, both of which were great. Garlic naan was great too, I didn't even eat the rice because I didn't want to stop using the naan. We started with fritters which were really good, as were the sauces (one was sweet which I didn't like at the start but grew on me). We stopped in for lunch on Saturday and it was delicious. My two youngest children had the kid chicken kabob meals which was a good value. While my wife and I and our older child all had thali combos (chicken tikka, saag paneer, and All three were good but I think my Dal Makhani was especially delicious. My wife really enjoyed her kheer as well. The restaurant was very comfortable and quiet on a later weekend lunch and the service was excellent. We'll definitely be back. read more

My husband is from the area and has been to Spice Root before. But I was never there before and we had lunch after a visit to MassMoca this past weekend while in town to see family. I don't do many yelp reviews these days but this food was soo good I can't stop thinking about it. We started with the samosas which were delicious with the tamarind sauce. I got the chicken malai kababs and they were amazing as was the rice and naan. My husband got chicken curry which was also delicious. Enjoyed our first lunch buffet but sorry it's not quite NYC Indian community level. The bread was fresh, tasty but missing the center air pocket, the consistency was too much thick bread. Buffet selection varied in chicken, vegetable dish but quantity was kept on the small side, but was refilled as it ran out and rice pudding was oddly orange color yet delicious. I finally tried this place, after years of it making people hungry as they walk down Spring Street. The lamb chops were absolutely delicious. They err to the lighter side on your spice selection, but it actually worked out in their favor for this item. The atmosphere is a bit hectic but friendly and colorful. Gives a slight upscale feel. Pricing is about what to expect for the region. I have a pretty good appetite and could feed myself here for 30 bucks or less, which is not too bad for the area and the fact that the quality is superb. read more

We had a wonderful experience! My family and I ate here for the first time tonight and we enjoyed everything we had...and we tried several dishes. We went with our young kids as well and they were very accommodating. We had both vegetarian and lamb samosas, garlic naan, chicken tandoori, lamb tikka masala and coconut rice. All were fantastic. Being from NYC and having had my share of travel around the US I have had my share of Indian cuisine and they have all been lovely. My sister is attending Williams so we decided to drop by and get a late dinner, we are both lovers and fans of Indian food. The decor inside the restaurant is beautiful, the inside was beautiful. We got seated rite away and our waiter brought us ice water and the menu. I am a lover of Biryani rice so I ordered Lamb Biryani, along with Naan bread, chicken vandaloo and salmon with spicy curry. Our food came out pretty quickly as expect, everything looked appetizing, fresh and delicious. The Naan bread was fresh out of the oven, it was delicious, the chicken vandaloo was so flavourful, honestly the best one I have had yet. I didn't enjoy my Lamb Biryani. I just didn't get the flavour I was expecting, the lamb wasn't well seasoned and it just tasted blah, I was disappointed. I tasted the salmon and it was pretty good. I came to this restaurant after riding up Mt. Greylock for a quick lunch. I was attended too as soon as a sat down, and I chose to eat from the lunch buffet. It had a surprising amount of vegan and vegetarian options. I enjoyed everything from the buffet, but the naan was especially good. Fluffy, soft, and buttery. Sad to be writing this review, but it is what it is. We come here every summer (nearly a decade) when we visit the Berkshires. We always have a wonderful experience every single time, but this experience was different. I understand COVID has changed a lot for restaurants, but the food they served us was AWFUL. We spent about $100 getting our favorite dishes and supporting one of our favorite small businesses; however, we were SO disappointed when we got home. We checked on Yelp to find a place to eat after a trip to The Clark. I love moderately spicy Indian food and was not disappointed by the flavor of my Chicken Masala (with added veggies for $2.50-worth it!). The chicken was marinaded prior to cooking, adding to the overall flavor to the dish. My partner tried the matar paneer with tofu, and that was delicious as well. The nan was fresh and deliciously garlic. This is one of the few Indian places I have been where I can say the cost for the food was super reasonable for the amount and taste of food. They can custom "heat" your order, just ask, but my masala was just right. Why not 5 stars? The staff, while hard working and friendly, weren't able to keep up with checking in in tables, and food orders came very slow. A little more organization/help on that front and this place would score 5 stars for certain. read more

A beloved Williamstown eatery! They're currently offering curbside pickup and contactless delivery (and other options) so you can stay safe and enjoy some fresh naan. Portion sizes are large, but I would far prefer smaller portions for a lower price (though that's often not how Indian food is ordered, there would be demand for that in a college town and in a pandemic when people are eating alone more/don't want to share food). This place is great. One of the better Indian restaurants I've been to, which is surprising when I think of all the good Indian places I've visited over the years. I especially love their naan, which has the appropriate amount of char. The only criticism I hear from people--I criticism I do not share, by the way--is that the food is not spicy enough. This is only partly true. The food has plenty of spice; what it lacks is heat. That said, my wife and I usually order takeout, and we usually have plenty of "heat" on hand (e.g., chili flakes, sriracha, etc.) when we want it. But I wonder if any of the complainers has tried asking for more heat, if that's what they want. One of my favorite things about this place is the aroma wafting out across the Williams science quad every afternoon. I never tire of it, and I love how the smell of Indian cooking totally changes my perception of this rural New England town. read more

It was very tomatoey, like the rice you get at Tex Mex places. It just wasn't seasoned like a traditional biryani. The veggies in it had the waterlogged, rubbery flavor of frozen veggies. My friend got the malai kofta. When I saw her struggling to cut into one, I knew something was off. The kofta looked dense and tough. She said they tasted old. We didn't finish our meal, and didn't bring it home which is unusual for someone like me who is normally really cheap. I should add that we're from NJ which probably has the best Indian food in the country, so our standards may be a bit high. It was basically coleslaw with extra yogurt, barely a remnant of cucumber, and no mint. My Jalfrezi was made with tomato paste and cauliflower, and chewy lamb - it was gross. I'm a big eater and had to take home one breast. But, kind of dry, not much flavor. Really MEDIOCRE. And weirdly, some other diners near me asked the owner if the plates were sharable. He did not answer their question... he said "it depends on your appetite." I could tell the diners were surprised by his response. Really kind of obnoxious of him to not provide more information.
