We first tried China Pavilion about 10 years ago because of the incredible annual Zagat ratings... and were pleasantly surprised. We've loved every meal! The chicken & broccoli is my favorite! The chicken is tender the broccoli fresh and the sauce is very light, savory. My husband is in love with the kung pao chicken... again really tender chicken, fresh, tiny pieces of celery and peanuts. The pork egg rolls, spring rolls, wonton soup, scallion pancakes, General Tso's chicken, orange chicken, pork fried rice, pork ribs and beef % broccoli all have our two thumbs up! The dining room was recently remodeled and expanded and the Asian décor is inviting and comfortable but we mostly order take out. The only drawback to their delivery is a $3.00 fuel charge but considering gas prices and manpower it's worth it! Our food is quickly delivered HOT and with a smile. The wait staff has ALWAYS been attentive and helpful. Annie, the owner, pays careful attention to EVERY customer and EVERY order. She works hard and never forgets a face! It was a happy surprise when we walked in the third time and she asked us how we were, by name! Not bad considering we were only ordering take out up until that point! :) I can't say enough positive things about the China Pavilion and their scrumptious food. Found a huge dead fly in my fried rice take out order. Had to throw out almost $40 of food.

Food is good and hot, and was ready when promised. Would have been good to get spoon, fork and napkins in the bag.

Wait service was terrible. I mean... Terrible. Wasn't asked if we wanted anything to drink, just given water. Ordered chicken and broccoli, sesame chicken and chicken finger appetizer. Portions were huge! Sadly, chicken fingers were like the sweet and sour chicken without the sweet and sour sauce. Spoiler alert- that chicken without the sauce gets old fast. Sesame chicken was crispy and actually good, you could tell it was legit crispy chicken. Broccoli was stone cold. Chicken and broccoli; chicken was good, sauce wasn't that flavorful. The broccoli this time was fully cooked.... Apparently in a pan with some kind of beef as it had beef grease all over it. Blech. Then we wait for the check. 20 minutes of careless whisper Pandora on the overhead speakers while we sat there. Ignored. Finally another waiter noticed us and boxed up our left overs and gave us the check.... $45. Plus tip it was about $52. $52 for food that was equally or less better than the "fast food" Chinese we could have got for $20 with deplorable service. Never again. read more

China Pavilion totally rocks. Remember when you were a kid and you actually used to go to a Chinese restaurant and sit down inside and eat? Crazy. I know. Seriously, though. The food here is money. One time when I was in high school, I came here with a bunch of friends, and they dared me to eat one of the chili peppers from the General Tso's chicken dish. Um... yeah... went for lunch last week and oh myyy...the food was really good! lived around the area for 12 years and haven't been to this place because I thought it was just gonna be one of those asian chinese restaurants (and also, the reviews) but boyyy, I was WRONG! As a certified foodie, this place really serves quality Chinese food and not just one of those take-out places...The place itself is really CLEAN! Very pleasant vibe and the server was very nice and accommodating! Also, as an asian who's tried soo many asian restaurants around the area(except for this one LOL)...this one really is one of the top of the list because it the food doesn't have the "taste" that makes you "full and bloated" (if that makes sense)...so excited to try more of the dishes that they serve if it is up to par with my very first visit! read more

Been coming here for 10 years & I don't eat Chinese food anywhere else. Always fresh and the service is excellent. The drinks are nice too. If you go there try their hot & sour soup or their egg drop soup. Both are delicious. read more

Decent and reliable. Prob I would give 3.5 stars. But nothing out of the ordinary. They will do the dishes without salt and sauce which is helpful for those of us with dietary issues. Recently I had wonton soup, which was excellent, and sweet and sour chicken,which I thought was too sweet and a very unappetizing reddish pink color. The kids love it but they are not discriminating. We will continue to call them because they are close and good. But not great, so not for a special occasion. read more

Sooo. My first choice when my fiancé and I get take out is always China pavilion. We always get the steamed dumplings and the soy sauce is amazing. Well.. this time I was feeding the pork fried rice to my son with the soy sauce on top. As I dumped out the soy sauce from the cup I noticed some little things at the bottom. As I looked closer it looked like rice, but the thought that crossed my mind was maggots. When I took the flash light on my phone and looked they WERE DEAD MAGGOTS!!! I almost threw up. How could maggots be in the sauce. I will never ever ever eat here again. read more

Let me start out by saying that I LOVE China Pavilion's food. This is a review only of my most recent visit. We went on New Years day around 5:30. There were plenty of open tables and we were seated right away. Our service from that point on was awful. It was as if our waiter was on drugs or something. Painfully slow and just plain odd. The food took forever and that is pretty unusual. I think our waiter forgot we were there. I got the shrimp mei fun & my friend the chicken fried rice. Both were just lukewarm. Mine was super salty and just not good. I was so disappointed as we live pretty far and going here is a treat. Such a bummer. read more

A type of food dominated by countless take out only restaurants with food that kind of seems to taste the same no matter what you order, its always great to have a alternative like china pavillion. For the past 10 years we seem to order the same dishes only changing up in small ways. Common orders consist of ma-po tofu, schezuan chicken/beef, kung pao chicken, chow fun, salt and pepper calamari, China pavillion has key to success with longevity, consistency, quality ingriedents, and a clean friendly atmosphere.. The asian/american style of chinese food is done well with taste in mind.. I always found it funny that with alot of chinese take out that you can order two dishes that are completely different and end up with 2 dishes that have a sauce and vegetable selection that taste identical....china pavillion keeps that line from being crossed and has continued to keep its integrity as a restaurant and business My opinion gathered from eating at this restaurant for the last 10 years is simply that i have never had a bad meal.. When there are leftovers or take out in my fridge, it never makes it 24 hours.... Definitely a place to try at least one time, right at the start of US1 post rd orange c.t...Ironically china pavillion is 3 doors down from a chinese style buffet in the same plaza.... read more

I guess the best compliment is the fact that we came once with Chinese friends, and after dinner they said it was the best Chinese food they've had in the states. Among my favorites: sesame prawn, kung pao chicken, and the peking duck is AMAZING. Doesn't really get any better than this! read more

This place is awful. Its billed as MSG free, but its not. I was here with a big family meal and we all got soup. Then after the soup all our jaws began to tingle..so we asked the waiter if there was MSG in it (even though they say there isnt any) they said yes THEN they showed us a picture of what theu used to prove there was MSG in it. They served meals with broccoli that was ice cold. When we called them ot it, they said it was "for decoration only". This was not 2 pieces of broccoli, this was a SIDE of BROCCOLI! This place is terrible. STAY THE HELL AWAY!!!!!!!!!! My mom got sick, my sister got sick, my couson threw up, the MSG made me nauseous, really bad. So, placed a takeout order on New Year's Eve - of course the place was jamming and it was a two-hour wait - this was not a problem. I arrived to pick up my meal at the designated time and it was ready. Actually, shall I say it had been ready for what seemed like a while. Upon getting home it was cold and everything [including soup] needed to be reheated, which clearly affects flavor. Now to the order, the subgum wonton was awful, smelled and tasted funny and went uneaten; the pork lo mein I ordered - supposed to be the main curse of our meal - was pork fried rice. Egg rolls dried and chewy. The ribs were OK. I tried a day or so later to email - but their email found on the internet does not work. I then send a hand-written letter - strongly worded but apropos. I was not looking for free food for a year, rather just a simple acknowledgement and apology for a very inferior holiday dinner that left me embarrassed. Nothing! No response - and yes, I did leave name, address and phone. Needless to say I have lived in town for many years, have many friends - I will not be going back and making sure friends know of my experience. read more

This is some of the best American Chinese food I've had. What I love about the chicken dishes: they always use white meat only. Most take out establishments use dark meat because it's cheaper. I've had a variety of their dishes and they've all been very tasty. The restaurant is clean, good service, and friendly. read more

Gay marriage is quite the hot political topic these days. I know it's not quite legal in Connecticut, at least not yet, though I do believe civil unions are recognized. I bring this up because I want to marry the General. I love General Tso, oh how I love him. I'm not sure how my wife will feel about my ambitions of matrimony, but she's gotta understand this is about food.... and damn good food, at that. And thankfully, China Pavilion does a pretty good job serving up this meal of champions. My wife and I lived in North Haven once, and we used to get our takeout from a place called Pagoda's that just seemed to nail this dish. A little part of me died when we had to move below I-91. And since that time, I sampled a plethora of awful, uninspired, of-questionable-origin, horrible General Tso's. This dish should be pretty hard to screw up when you consider what it is, but in a lot of places, it just flat out sucks. So I was pretty happy when we tried this place after it having been recommended by a friend, and they pass the General Tso's test with flying colors. My wife swears by their Cashew Chicken (she literally swears by it, sitting next to it after she takes each bite and spewing forth various obscenities to convey her enjoyment). So until that glorious day when the good General and I tie the knot, I'll be content to pick up and dine in China Pavilion. read more

Greasy, bland and without any redeeming quality. The food tasted like it had been cooked in dirty oil. When you ask for extra-spicy and you get no level of spiciness at all, that's a problem. Tell tale signs that the meal isn't going to be very good: commercial crispy noodles on the table along with pink duck sauce that tasted like both were months old. Never again. read more

at first, it didnt look like anything special. A regular chinese restaurant in a shopping mall. We decided to take a chance on it. Besides them having the best vegetarian chinese food I have ever tasted, the seating arrangements were pleasant and comfortable. The waitors were attentive, always filling up my water without request, they situated us with crunchy wonton noodles as soon as we were given a table, and most of all, the food was beyond shopping mall quality. The hefty portions also make for a good tomorrow's lunch. Delicious; just wished I lived closer so I could come everyday. read more

The only reason I am giving this two stars is because I have been here many times before and the food is quite good. My experience last night, however, was anything but. May I preface this by saying, yes, it was New Years Eve, so yes, it was expected to be busy and service a bit slower than usual but NOTHING and I mean NOTHING excuses the service (or lack there of) we received. Upon being seated we were warned service would be slower than usual, so I expected a half hour to forty minutes to get food rather than the usual twenty. Okay, fine. After the first fifteen minutes we had to wave someone over just to pay attention to us and bring us a drink. After another fifteen minutes we had to wave over someone else to get us an order. No one showed up on their own volition. We had to request any attention at all. One hour later, we had still not been served. After an hour, we requested a check-in on our food and were told (with attitude) that "we are busy, can't you see that? it could be another hour until you get served!" Direct quote. Six months ago I would have given five stars, but the last two times we ordered take out the food was terrible. When I picked up my food the second time I told them about how the food wasn't as good and they apologized. I even asked if it was possible they had a new cook and they said no. When I got home the food wasn't good for a second time. I don't plan on going back. I have been ordering the same items for over ten years and all of a sudden General Tso's chicken is tiny chucks of dried out chicken with little flavor. I was surprised that I had to ask for chopsticks. Most Asian restaurants have them at the table. I sent the egg drop soup back, tasted like a spoonful of cornstarch. That being said, the beef dish was tasty. I called in advance to see if they had gluten free options, I was assured they do. My waiter, however, felt me feeling very leery. Also he wasn't very friendly. I would give it another try next time I am in CT and maybe get a noodle dish. read more
