They are still going strong and really haven't changed. Many of the staff has been there since before EBS died and they always remember me. While they don't have the carts of dim sum going around, you order from the dim sum menu. They still have the buffet and entrees, but traditional and American. They even added hot pot entrees now. Back open on holidays since they are 7 days a week, you can enjoy the other traditional Christmas dinner of Chinese food. I am looking forward to dim sum that day. We came to China Palace (formerly Asia City) for a family meal as this restaurant offered a variety of dining styles... a la carte, all you can eat buffet, and dim sum. It's a very large facility to be able to manage that and to seat so many customers. The middle area contained the self-serve buffet stations while two separate dining rooms flanked it. The decor felt a bit outdated as if one was stuck in the late 20th century. Our group opted to order from the dinner menu which had mainly Cantonese cuisine dishes. A dish of complimentary salted peanuts was provided while we decided on our selections. The first choice was the Beef Short Ribs with Black Pepper Sauce. This was my least favorite as it took the longest to come out of the kitchen. The meat was very chewy too which made it difficult to extract from the rib bones. We should have went with a stir-fried beef dish since both of them were served on a hot sizzling platter. The other items we picked were casseroles served in a clay pot. One was a Grouper Fish with Black Bean Sauce, and the other was the House Special Hot Pot. The latter contained sea cucumber, scallops, shrimp, fish, and Chinese mushrooms. The seafood components did come with a higher price tag, however an additional $8 seemed excessive. The grouper was the best offering of the evening as the sauce was mild and flavorful. I can't comment on the buffet spread because none of us tried it. The service we received from the staff was acceptable. For our visit, I gave China Palace a 2.5 star rating because the quality and quantity of food was mediocre for the cost we paid. read more

The outside of the restaurant looked ordinary but once you enter the restaurant, the stone carving meeting you was awesome. Reminds of a Suzhou garden. It gave me good vibes for a Chinese restaurant (especially in Ypsilanti, Michigan - a city that I did not know existed until I went there for dinner on a one night stay in Ann Harbor.) to have something like that carving. It gave you a sense that it makes it "authentic" Chinese food. No one would spend that kind of money to purchase that carving unless they have a good knowledge of Chinese history and culture. The little figures on the carving depicts ancient village life. Once I entered the restaurant, it was full of chatter with customers eating pile high plates of crawfish and other shelled seafood items. Service was excellent and polite. Tables were cleared with finished dishes and tea refilled without asking. Food was temperature hot and fresh. Buffet food trays were constantly being replenished. The Sushi bar had a great variety of sushi - at least ten varieties. The area the chefs worked in was clean; all wore gloves; ingredients were either fresh or fresh frozen (you can see the chefs take items out of the refrigerator when needed so no sushi would sit that long on a plate) and will custom a sushi for you (I don't eat onions nor seafood but like the other ingredients in it). The variety of sushi was unbelievable for a buffet. I never seen anything like that. In SF, it would be a restaurant of its own. There were so many choices of what to eat. I did not know where to start. I started with a few pieces of dim sum. That was good - just like any good restaurant in SF or in Hong Kong - well stuffed with ingredients and right amount of seasoning. Then I figured the other entrees must be good. I walked around the entire buffet and the selections looked tempting, each with its own aroma. Each entrée I tried was flavorful, well balanced with seasoning, temperature hot and delicious. Also, there was a huge dessert bar that would delight anyone - from American to Chinese desserts Unfortunately, I could not take food pictures because it was so crowed. I definitely suggest that "this" is restaurant to go for delicious Chinese food. Also, it was the largest buffet I ever went to - even for Chinese food. I love an all you can eat buffet and this is one of the places that gives you the most bang for your buck. It's $20 and no time limit, so you can just eat to your hearts content. They have sushi and seafood boil, and they have the Chinese buffet basics as well. They also have dimsum which is pretty good for the location and price. The service is efficient and the team gets you seated and you're off to go. They have plenty of tables and the restaurant is peaceful. Definitely recommend this place especially if you're balling on a budget. read more

The egg rolls were limp and barely warm. The sushi was ok. The hot sour soup was good. The soup crackers were not available. The employees were less than inviting. The restaurant was pretty busy, so perhaps they were stressed. This was our first visit and probably our last. The cost was $67 for 3 people prior to the gratuity. read more

For anyone who has grown up in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area since the 1990s, will know the area has had several Chinese buffet restaurants over the years. Sadly, they seem to come, last a few years, and then fade away like a passing comet in the night sky. China Palace definitely has staying power, and is not your typical buffet style restaurant that has two unique features. First off, they offer a complete dim sum menu that has been sorely missed over the years in this area. Many of us older patrons of Chinese cuisine will clearly remember the nearby "Great Lakes Chinese Seafood" and "Lai-Lai" restaurants. Both of these establishments offered an extensive selection of dim sum entrées that were fantastic. Secondly, China Palace offers a large hot pot section that will easily seat two, or large group of people together. If you have never enjoyed hot pot, I highly recommend it. There are so many options and you cook the food right on your table. Thirdly, they do offer a Chinese menu, which gives you a chance to enjoy more authentic food offerings. One of these days, I am going to have to try some of the menu selections. Finally, the service here is truly friendly and prompt. Also, when come in the front entrance, you can enjoy the Japanese Koi and toss coins into the fountain and pond for good luck. read more

What a lovely surprise I had this morning. A family group invited me to join them for Dim Sum in Ann Arbor. Now normally I'll drive over to Canada for a Dim Sum extravaganza. All that motoring around the bridge & customs is done. This is my newest go to spot for those delicious plump piping hot sumptuous morsels - aka Dim Sum. The service was excellent perfectly timed as new dishes arrived every 5-7 minutes. Only thing missing from their table service was the flaming hot chili sauce they serve in Windsor. This is the only dimsum spot I'd recommend in Ann Arbor or Washtenaw County. Do you happen to know of any better dimsum places in Southeastern Michigan? Sure, there are a few in Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield, or Troy. The food is good, but not as good as some other places in the country, like Park Asia in Brooklyn or Yanksing in San Francisco, which is an unrealistic expectation. Some of the special items, like stir-fried noodles, are a bit pricey--meatless for $13 and a small portion. Also, all the plain stir-fried vegetables are a little too expensive. Honestly it's impressive just how bad it was. I couldn't name a single thing that was worth eating from the buffet. The only thing that had any flavor was the jello. Food was great! There's dimsum all day long and I 100% recommend the shui mai. I still think about it. It's so big and flavorful. Very good place to go for a celebration and their food is huge! I am sad, for years China Palace was our go to Chinese buffet. We were in Ypsi, hungry, husband suggested the buffet. I have come to realize that restaurants have a life cycle. The physical plant has great atmosphere, the staff are so polite, it's clean. The buffet had sparse offerings. Only half the sushi area was served, noticeably two hot carts were pushed to the wall with only one side filled. There were several 'filler' dishes - garlic toast, a pan of boiled cabbage, unidentified fried fish to name a few. There were some tasty dishes, then there were some real flops. I used to love coming here, but after recent visit, I'll be seeking out other Chinese buffets. I miss the days when Ann Arbor/Ypsi area used to have three Chinese buffets and we are left with China Palace and their mediocre food selections. They reduced the buffet tables - down to 4. I avoid the sushi area due to many food safety violations they get. Trying to find decent "Chinese" food was difficult, the turnover on many of the dishes seemed very low. I only found two items that were decent on this visit - chowmain and the clams. Looks like "Chinese" speaking customers came for the dim sum, which you can order a la carte off the menu. I wish I could give zero, but 1 star will do. They can blame covid for all the changes, but frankly speaking that's poor excuse to downgrade their food and selection. read more

We came here for their Lunar New Year combo which consists of a soup, six dishes, and a dessert for a total of $138. The price is pretty nice for the amount of food you are getting (for six people) but the food was pretty average. None of the dishes stood out as they were either bland or salty. They also do dim sum, buffet, hotpot, and a la carte orders. The interior design seems a bit outdated and the carpet looks old and not well kept. I wouldn't recommend coming here for a date night but would recommend coming here as a big group or a simple night out. read more

Hot Pot ( or Shabu shabu ) is back, BUT no longer can 2 people get 1 hot pot with the other getting the buffet. My wife and I both discovered hot pot here ( Asia City then ) on her birthday March 27, 2017. We loved it and returned on my birthday day in April 10 days later. We were disappointed that it ended on March 31st. Subsequently we went to get it Fuji in Madison Heights and even found a great restaurant in Cleveland, " Kintaro's All you can eat Hot Pot and Sushi " as we visited my daughter & son in law's and on to see our son in Kentucky. Kintaro expanded into 3 restaurants in the Cleveland area and the wife orders sushi and I the hot pot. There you are allowed to share if you each get different. But not so any more at China Palace. We were forced to get hot pot or the buffet, but not both! The wife wanted buffet and I love hot pot so she conceded to get hot pot. To get both is $5 more. The price dropped from $30 to $20 so this is great and we will likely do both most of the time. The buffet on the weekends now has duck, a different steak, and a great seafood boil with shrimp, mussels, corn on the cob, and red skin potatoes. read more

My friends and I were supposed to go to another restaurant. Unfortunately, our first choice was totally booked and we ended up here. I had vowed never to come back but reluctantly agreed. Ok. It's two years later, perhaps, they turned their game around. Nope. They are still schlepping the same American-Chinese Sub-quality food that is poorly cooked. We read mixed reviews about poor service but we don't typically expect 5 star service at dim sum but everyone was pleasant and kept coming around to check in on us and ensure everything was great. Service is usually pretty good. Ambiance is very good. Ornate areas as this is supposed to be a two areas for weddings. Food for buffet is acceptable but is varying quality. Hot pot is the best thing here. It went from $30 to $20 back to $30 last time we went. With K-Pot opening soon nearby going back up to $30 is in my opinion a big mistake. $25 would make more sense. Overall the weekend buffet is better but cost more, and I cautiously recommend it. read more

[ A couple years ago I wrote a review that focused on hotpot; updating the review now to focus on their dim sum. ] China Palace is the premier dim sum spot in Ann Arbor. One or two other restaurants offer it as a limited afterthought, but for variety and authenticity, this is the right place. (There's another respectable dim sum spot in Troy, but that's a bit of a drive.) If you haven't been here, it's a large restaurant with ample seating. Prior to COVID, getting dim sum here was a great experience, with multiple carts in motion all around, a pleasant buzz, and enticing food wheeling by every few minutes. Well, like many other things, COVID ruined the fun. Now you have to order and wait for your dim sum to be prepared in the kitchen. Some time later the cart will show up with your food. Same excellent taste and quality -- just a lot less fun. (Blame our new friend the virus for that. I suspect they changed protocol for safety reasons.) Overall, still a pretty good experience and absolutely worth a visit. Pricing is very reasonable. I subtracted a single star because service is consistently slow. Build that delay into your breakfast/brunch schedule and you'll be fine. read more

Chinese buffet isn't really my style. Maybe I'll go once every several years just as a reminder about why I stay away. Or perhaps I'll find myself in a position where I need to eat my feelings, although in those cases, I'll still tend to favor Indian buffet. But dim sum is my jam, especially when there is cart service. What I really need to do is return to China Palace with a posse, because my daughter an I were able to take down precious few dishes before we simply couldn't eat any more. And there was a lot that looked delicious. The highlights were the custard filled pineapple buns and the shumai. There isn't chili oil on the table, but it was quickly brought over once I asked. Actually, the service was much better than I'm accustomed to at dim sum parlors. The two of us were slow rolling our dim sum brunch, being careful to take just one plate at a time, and it felt as if the staff might be concerned we weren't happy with the offerings. Quite the opposite. There were so many tempting options on each cart, it made it hard to choose which one was going to be the plate that sparked joy. Baked pork buns and fried shrimp dumplings were okay, but each could have been warmer. However, I blame that on my rookie mistake. Every dim sum parlor does things a little differently. After observing the flow of carts around the room, I realized that instead the carts refreshing their wares in the kitchen, kitchen carts come out to the dining room and replenish the servers. Keep an eye out for those deliveries! As we were eating our less than warm pork buns, a fresh batch came out to the cart, and I was filled with regret. Sometimes that's the way dim sum goes. I'm looking forward to returning as many times--with as many people--as I can to try and work my way through more of those delicious delights. Bonus: Not only is parking super easy, but there is an Asian grocery store next door. So if you're inspired by your meal, or simply want to try and walk off a few of those dumplings, you don't even have to get back into your car. read more

My son and I had dinner here last night. I had high hopes they were quickly dashed. I thought the food was absolutely disgusting. It was old and greasy. I was shocked that my 13-year-old son Jill the same way. that guy eats most anything especially Chinese food. All the pans of anything that was popular were wiped out and not replaced. I could see that no one was in the kitchen actually cooking any replacements. When I asked the staff why this was I was told the kitchen staff had gone to dinner. 45 minutes before they closed ..... the kitchen staff had gone to dinner. Uh... right My son ate a few green beans and a cup of ice cream. I have a plate of rice that was not fully cooked. It was crunchy. For this we paid $35. Review for Buffet only- It was hard to order because our family was ignored for the most part. We went because it said Dim Sum and we were close by. I need some good Dim Sum in my life without going to Golden Harvest. The outside is sooooo cool. Inside is too, until you get to the dining area and it smells, the carpet is dirty, and the table was greasy. No one offered us a Dim Sum menu and they didnt come back to take our order either. So.... theres that. We were left with the buffet options. I made due with seafood salad, some fried things and a lot of the rice.
