I ordered through DoorDash here as they had a few BOGO deals, which I love to see. I first started with the crab Rangoons, which were good and BOGO, so I got double the Rangoons! I can't complain there. I also ordered the dumplings, which I didn't care much about. I wanted some wonton soup for the cold day, and I was disappointed. There was no flavor at all, and it just tasted like water. The wonton itself in the soup was not that good, either. For entrees, they had fried noodles (like lo mein) BOGO. I got them in beef, and they were delicious. It gave me a couple of days of lunch and dinner leftovers. I wanted to try their chef's chow fun since I love a good wide noodle, but I wasn't too impressed. There wasn't much flavor, and it seemed to lack something. I might enjoy this dish more dining in, but for now, I'm going off of delivery. Lastly, I can't order takeout without getting fried rice. I got the small shrimp fried rice and had to throw it away. It was so fishy tasting and tasted like salt water. I always get shrimp-fried rice no matter where I go, and I am surprised by how fishy this tasted--honestly disappointed with how it tasted. Sigh. I miss the wok hei that Chef Gene wrapped the extraordinary Chinese food that flash fried out of his iron wok. I worked for his family restaurant growing up, and it is rare to encounter wok hei in any Chinese establishments here in Beertown. Shrimp in Lobster Sauce at its best is an unctuous umami dish rich with pork, egg ribbons, black beans and plump shrimp. The sauce is rich enough that you continue to lap it up long after your belly is filled. Sigh. China Gourmet charged $17.95 for a sad, thin, white broth with shrimp that they called Shrmp in Lobster Sauce but should be called Diet shrimp broth entree and evokes Wongs Wok menu. Shame shame shame on you. No flavor. Overpriced. 2 cups max. No wok hei. I think they zapped it in the microwave..... My Uber ordered totaled $60 including an unanticipated $10 service charge. This rip off meal also included 2 egg foo yong hockey pucks, and a sandy dry dish of Singapore noodles. I succumbed to ordering delivery because I was too tired after a long day. It's the same condition that causes me to order extremely expensive junk from infomercials at night. I have been here twice... the first time was about ten years ago... and things have gone downhill since then... and they were not great ten years ago. We had 7 PM theater tickets.... so I figured we would give them another shot. The seating is all in the front now... a few tables in the front. Most of the very large restaurant is dark and not used. Even then... a decent amount of lights in the front half are turned off. I ordered two spring rolls and Pork Fried Rice. Husband got the dumplings and "Empress something" a chicken with some steamed veggies and rice. The spring rolls were obvious institutional ... and a bit dry. The Pork Fried rice was mostly flavorless but with an undertone of wet cardboard. I ended up eating some of husbands rice and some of the chicken. His Dumplings were OK, but not great... and the Empress Chicken moderate. He was "satisfied" I was not... and left pretty hungry. Soy sauce bottle says its made in China... but tastes likes its been watered down a lot. Same with the Sweet and Sour sauce... which was watery. Ten years apart... and both visits were pretty bad. They do seem to do a lot of take-out orders... so someone likes them. read more

I normally would never have even considered China Gourmet, given that Jing's is just as close to my office and is delicious. But Jing's failure to update their website created an opportunity for me to try another restaurant--especially since I had several people in the office expecting Chinese food for lunch... China Gourmet was available for delivery and had all of the items that folks had selected from Jing's on their menu, so I took a chance. While the food was serviceable, it was nothing to write home about. The sesame chicken was lacking in--wait for it--sesame Yet the real reason for the low rating is more to do with the time it took to receive the food. The email said that it would arrive at 12:26. It wasn't until after 1:00 when it showed up. The EatStreet driver said that the owner told him the food had been done for a while. WOW - WOW - WOW. China Gourmet is a very inconspicuous little restaurant (it's quite big inside) with really no frills or over the top atmosphere situated right across the street from the Pabst Theater. We were in a hurry to get something to eat before catching the comedy show across the street and we stumbled across China Gourmet. Our server (unfortunately I didn't catch his name) was so kind when taking our order and fast fast fast with the service. I genuinely dislike when people say "this is the best..." or "this is the worst..." BUT this was absolutely the most flavorful Chinese food I have ever had. The menu choices, which there were a ton of, were nondescript and not unlike what you would find at almost any Chinese restaurant, BUT the flavor profiles were ridiculous. Something as simple as pan fried noodles and fried rice which are normally compliments to the meal could have easily been the main meal. So fresh and so delicious. I had Kung Pao Beef and the sauce was so savory, I literally took the serving spoon and finished it off like a soup. If you're in town or going to a show at the Pabst Theater, don't bother with all the other options that are flashy and fancy; go to China Gourmet for the delicious food and the wonderful service. read more

Chinese buffets are usually pretty good at attracting me and this one is okay. Perhaps not the largest selection on the hot bars and nor is it the healthiest food in the world, but they promise that they don't use MSG and there is plenty of food. Okay, we're going in! Three or four steam tables and one cold table with classic Americanized Chinese food, like Chicken and Broccoli and Beer in Oyster Sauce. Steamed dumplings, fried rice and spring rolls, of course. I filled my plate three times, including one pass at the dessert table. Towards the end of the lunch hour, some of the trays were emptying out, but the kitchen staff was trying hard to keep up. Visiting from out of town, I enjoyed walking the River Walk and saw the dilapidated China Gourmet building of old and thought, "too bad; I'd like to try that place." Well I got my chance as I realized they moved to a storefront nearby just off the River Walk and on a whim ordered takeout. Ordered hot & sour soup and a small chef's special fried rice. They cooked it up fresh and I'm thoroughly enjoying it now. The soup has an interesting but delicious slight sweetness to it as well - wonderful, and consistency is just thick enough. The rice is scrumptious. A fair price for the quality. Too bad I won't be here long enough to try the buffet lunch. read more

Had dinner on a Friday night at 7:00 and had the buffet at the suggestion of the owner(?). $15.95, but the vast majority of the main entrees where out for the whole time we were there. We received only water and were never asked for a drink order. On top of the non existent service, what was on the buffet was sub par at best. As I type this review, a family that was there before us just walked out, as they waited 45mins and never received their order from the menu and no updates from the manager / owner. The egg drop soup was pretty straightforward. However, when I was almost done w it, I almost ate a piece of string?? It was so bizarre. Not sure where the rope/string came into play in my meal. The chow fun was piping hot and looked fresh, but had a subtle sourness to it. Could just be a different recipe. But really, string in my soup? I didn't even notice it bc I tipped back the entire container into my mouth and started chewing something that tasted like rope. Gross. Don't think I will use them again. Honestly one of the worst Chinese meals I've had in a very very long time. The The wonton soup was water with one and ahalf noodles. The eggrolls were spring rolls and I specifically asked for eggrolls and they were very greasy. The chicken and broccoli had a very strange tart taste to it and it had dark meat chicken in it which I've never seen ever. There are many Chinese restaurants in the area I strongly suggest not going to this one. read more

I feel that this restaurant deserves 4 stars. Their food is delicious, quick, and hot. The Crab Rangoon (one of my 'make or break Chinese foods) was amazing. Sure, the atmosphere is a bit cold and cluttered, but let's be honest - you don't go to a Chinese restaurant for fancy tables and gold plated silverware. If you want quick takeout, I recommend this place. I haven't had their lunch buffet, but once I do I'll update the review. I'm not entirely sure why this place has such low reviews; this is a downtown Chinese restaurant. Temper your expectations and you won't be disappointed :) read more

This place might as well have a sign out in front, "We're trying to have the Health Department shut us down, but so far they've been ignoring us." Yeesh. Stopped in last night before a show at the Pabst Theater was wholly disappointed. When this space opened up as a electric trolley car themed pub and restaurant of a different name many years ago (15?), it was a great place and an early indicator of the type of quality we would become accustomed to in Milwaukee today. Now a Chinese joint under the name China Gourmet, it has fallen far from a once pleasant pre-show destination. I should have trusted my instincts. Upon my first step through the door I could see the place was a hygienic shambles. Papers stacked up all over the place. Dirty windows. Unvacuumed floors. Seriously. If the dining area looks like this, I can't imagine what lurks in the kitchen. The menu I held in my hands looked like it served as the kitchen stove wok's backsplash. There were stains and splashes of sauce all over it. Even hungry, I started to lose my appetite just looking at it. Service was slow and food just blah. Nothing to rave about. I ordered the spicy beef with peanuts. The owner/waiter asked, "Four star hotness? Or Five?" I went with four -- while I wanted heat, at some restaurants, if you go to five, you better be prepared for pain! Not at the China Gourmet. This four was a one and a half in my book. There was nothing spicy about it. This is a place to be avoided. This great piece of Milwaukee River real estate needs to be reclaimed by someone who can restore the pride of of a good establishment only steps away from one of the greatest theaters in the world: The Pabst. Note: the only reason I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 is that the owners really are very nice people. They try, but just not hard enough. Another note: What the heck, Milwaukee? We originally targeted eating at Beta by Sabor (smaller plate dining at a Brazilian steakhouse). They weren't open on Sunday. We went to the new Spanish place on Wells--closed on Sunday. The wait at Rock Bottom was one hour and Port of Call told us they were full (even though there were many empty tables, they were out of waitstaff. We'd have to eat at the bar). My husband & I went here on a whim because we wanted to check out other Chinese restaurants instead of going to the handful that we usually frequent. We ordered: 1. Taiwanese Rice Noodle which had thin rice noodle stir fried with chicken and vegetables. 2. Home style beef which is shredded beef sauteed with shredded carrots, celery in a special spice hot brown sauce (you can ask for it not to be as spicy and they will adjust the spiciness to your liking) 3. Pot stickers The food was a really good and came out quickly. The owner was very nice and talkative but provided excellent service. We will be back! read more

The food is good, decor not so much. The owner is pretty friendly (useless trivia: he's a computer software engineer from 1970s!). He provided me and my roomie with extra bowls of rice a couple of times. What can I say about this place? Well when we walked in the door makes this annoying noise. There was only one other person there besides us, so we thought no big deal we would get in and out. We waited by the door to be seated for about two mins before the owner greeted us. He was very friendly and talkative. That was the only reason for the slow service. Now I've eaten a lot of Chinese food and this was good, I had the chicken and broccoli (which I've had better) and my boyfriend had the curry chicken. Now the thing with my boyfriend is that he love love loves spicy food so when he ordered it he wanted it as hot as he could get it. When he received his plate it wasn't as hot as he thought it was going to be, and the owner said " if it's not hot enough, use the hot sauce" and that's what he ended up doing. The decor of the place was a little to much. They still have there Xmas lights and decorations up. Tons of bamboo as well. The owner made it a nice environment for us, but the service was a little slow, he did give us extra fortune cookies, which I love!) and boxed my food up for me right in front of me! It was a nice experience overall but it is a little pricey. My boyfriend was a little disappointed and stated it's not as good as it used to be. But I would give this place another try. Goodness, me; I am ever so sorry about this, but if this restaurant is the best Chinese food in Milwaukee (as they claim to be so voted), then the residents of this city should swear off Chinese food forever - or at least until they travel. Let me start by saying that one of these stars is solely for the polite and friendly service. The food - well, that's another story. I had the lunch buffet, and thus was able to try several dishes. Essentially, everything was bland and flavorless. Shrimp with lobster sauce, fried rice, dumplings, you name it. Even the garlic chicken! It was to the point where there was little point in having different dishes since they all tasted the same. Let's discuss the beef and broccoli - a staple of Americanized Chinese cuisine. I would never have thought that I would see the day where someone goofed this dish up, yet here I sit, dumbfounded. Not only was it as bland as everything else, but the beef was mushy and of low quality. How does this even happen? Folks, you prepare better food than this each and every time you pour milk over your cereal in morning. read more
