Birria...everything! Like many in Fort Worth, I was drawn to Birrieria y Taqueria Cortez with the…read moreheadlines that they received Michelin recognition. A local place that serves amazing Birria, count me in! We made our jaunt for a Friday lunch and they were busy. There's plenty of space here - they have both outdoor and indoor seating but given that it was still hot AF, most everyone was crammed inside. The menu is quite expansive. As I said, its birria galore. Usually when hit with this much goodness I try to default with some of the tried and true recommendations, so I opted for the Quesataco Combo: 3 birria and cheese tacos, with all the fixings. Amazing. decadent. delicious. Plenty of words to describe the great birria they dish out here. Happy to say Birrieria y Taqueria Cortez lives up to the hype and if you're like me and you love some birria, definitely give it a shot. We will be back to try some birria pizza or even the birria ramen. Can't go wrong here.

When I was on my birria kick I would drive from Arlington all the way here because no other place came close. The meat is full of flavor and spice and the conzume they bring out with it is just as good. Its full of spice and flavor and I straight up drink that by itself, i dip my tortillas with it. I usually put salt and lemon on the tortillas and then roll them up and dip em in the conzume. In the past, I had the ramen, the platillo, the tacos, and I think the quesabirria, they are all delicious but my favorite is the quesabirria and the tacos, followed by the ramen. The menu is small but just stick with the tacos or buy the meat by the pound, and you are good to go. The rice and beans are average but still good; the salsas they have on the table are amazingly delicious. The light green one is my favorite because is not too spicy but spicy enough to give me that kick am looking for in my food. I drown my food in that salsa sometimes and then dip in conzume. In the past, I also had their margaritas, and they are delicious! The mango with chamoy and Tajín on the rim is my favorite! They have a patio in the back with another bar and more Tv's. The staff is nice, but the last 2 times i been there it took over 10 minutes to just get a waiter to recognize i had not been help and place my drink order with them. I notice the staff tends to pay more attention to bigger parties instead of groups of just 1 or 2 customers. I like the atmosphere of this place; the music, the shows they have on the tv and the murals honestly make it feel cozy like I am visiting a family member. I don't come here when they have soccer games on or late at night on the weekends because the customers can get rowdy sometimes, and that's not my vibe. All the time I've been, they have a security officer so people don't get too out of hand. The parking lot is kind of small so if you come on a busy day/time, you might need to park across the street. I never had to wait long to get a table, and the staff is pretty quick about cleaning and turning tables over to keep the wait down.

To start the meal, they brought out an amuse-bouche that I can't remember the name of. It was a silky smooth creamy squash soup. I could have eaten a bowl of that and been satisfied! Soooo good! DRINKS: Zacatecas - Banhez Mezcal Joven, Guava Puree, Lime Juice, Chipotle Tamarind Syrup Not something I would typically order but it was smokey & complex. Carajillo43 - Licor 43, fresh espresso Perfect drink to end a great meal! APPETIZERS: Cazuela de Chorizo Housemade chorizo, bruleé panela cheese, oregano pickled onion, served with handmade heirloom blue corn tortillas. To make tacos. Best chorizo I have ever tasted! Made me change my mind about not liking chorizo. Guacamole So fresh and good! Served with heirloom house made blue corn tortillas. Nancy recommended we make tacos with chorizo & guac on them. They were good! Didn't from you typical tex mex chips. (This is not a Tex Mex places). They serve a red and green salsa. Both good. Red was mild in spice level and green was hot. MAIN: Codorniz en Mole Poblano Texas quail stuffed with a creamy pecan almond rice, house made mole poblano, oven roasted potatoes, queso fresco, toasted pumpkin seeds. DESSERT: (got two to split between 6 people. Just wanted a taste). Tres Leches del Desierto - my fav of the two! Deconstructed tres leches with ammonite-shaped ice cream and berries. Encuentro de Chocolate - very rich Chocolate sphere cake filled with chocolate mousse, finished with a chocolate glaze, served with beet-ancho chile foam We are all stuffed, happy, & look forward to going back! Love all the plants on their patio. Looks like a relaxing place to enjoy a perfect meal when nice out!

First time here and it was such a positive experience. I was a little confused about dressed code…read morebut it really is a mix. We were over dressed but there were some really casually dressed people so I'd say just come hungry or sort of hungry. I had seen all the buzz about the fried cactus and as someone who has grown up eating all my life I was intrigued on how this would be any different. Boy was I wrong. In fact, I would be happy enough just coming and eating only this. I have some sort of food limerence where I cannot stop thinking about this. Like daily! I want it so bad. No it was a whole experience because waiter placed this bowl towering with a mountain of curly crunchy ribbons. He kindly gave us his advice on the best way to eat it. You take their fresh made blue corn tortilla, pile on the cactus, don't be shy, if it fits in your mouth just go for it, then that green sauce was heavenly. All the flavors combined made me levitate. That would've been embarrassing. You could easy fill up on this alone given enough time and privacy. I just wanted a moment alone to enjoy fully ha ha. I then ordered the Chile en Nogada and the picture alone was enough for me to go yes we're on our way immediately. However listen I am a self proclaimed gift wrapping queen. I know a good ribbon and a good bow. I know that the typical dish has a bow - yes a fabric bow but this bow was not up to the standard of this restaurant, unfinished edges, and the color satin gold was not really representative of the environment. Good thing the bow is not edible but visually it could use a little improvement. The dish itself was 4 out of 5 for me only because I have had this dish before at a more casual space and every component of the dish was full flavored, where this one feels a bit safe. For dessert I was a little unimpressed with the options. I am not a fan of tres leches so I did not order their most famous desert but instead opted for another one that was a pastry with ice cream on top. I also give it 4 out of 5 its needing more flavor and sweetness, I mean this is dessert. The five stars is more for the service. Our server was amazing. He described every dish we ordered as if we were watching a Netflix documentary of a chef competition and they just submitted their dish. The table next to us got an amuse bouche compliments of the chef and I didn't want to be too nosy and peek over so I have no idea what it was. I was really hoping we'd get one too because honestly I was still hungry after all that. Oh cocktails. We ordered a drink before our table was available and I was not playing. I remember ordering a glass of bubbly rose and when our server brought it he served me a sip and had me try it before I decided, but honestly I wanted to tell him that I couldn't feel my face just pour it.

At first glance it seemed very cool, ambience was very welcoming, like we were at a family members home. However, the issues began when it was time to order. There were so many exclusions available after lunch time that we didn't really know what we ordered. My friend and I ordered margaritas...barely a drop of alcohol in either and were melted when they arrived. The other thing is a server brought out a plate of nachos (large tortilla with melted cheese) but didn't tell us it was two separate orders. Another friend ate mine by accident. Our server spilled some of my margarita on the table then wiped her hands on our tablecloth. Absolutely unsanitary. I ordered the small enchilada plate and $22 later I was disappointed. Food was mid at best, nothing was spectacular or cause to return. The cash only rule was fine until they told us they wouldn't split the check. Keep in mind that we barely know what each of us ordered since the server suggested items not found on the menu. I just added $40 and said good day.
